I found Mint through Yelp as this salon have amazing reviews. You will have to make an appointment in advance and make sure you read over the cancellation policy. Once you make an appointment, there are detailed emails to remind you of appointment and precautions taken at the facility. Once you enter the building, your hair stylist will ask you to wash your hands, have your temperature taken and fill out a questionnaire before seated inside. The hair stylist all have a mask and face shield on. Each seat was separated by a divider as covid precaution to minimize exposure/contact with another individual. Andrea was my hairstylist for the appointment. She was very friendly and asked a lot of questions to make sure I get the haircut I wanted. She asked if I style my hair, what's my daily routine, and the types of product I use. She was very patience with all my questions, in terms of hydrating my hair, use of hair mask/oil/dry shampoo, etc. She even curled my hair slightly to mimic what my hair will be expected to look that when it's shortened (natural wavy hair). I had an amazing experience with her and she told me the trimming is complimentary with her if my bangs get longer or needs some thinning from the thickness. This is a loosely connected group of independent contractors building personal relationships with mostly local women looking for high quality, complex salon services. If you're like me, and hair is not something you really give a shit about (but you also don't want a Pee Wee Herman haircut), then your best bet is to go down the street to Steele Barber. The cut might not be a 10/10, but at least Steele has a dedicated front desk function, doesn't book appointments six months out, and is -- for better or worse -- geared towards guys. Why the hair industry is so gendered, especially in Seattle, is beyond me. In a perfect world we'd have the skill of Mint Hair Studio and the customer service of Steele. Came in first week of Oct 2020 for a cut by Andrea. She was phenomenal! First, I was very impressed and happy with their COVID precautions. I texted her when I arrived and she had me wash my hands, sign a waiver and she opened the doors for me. She had a mask and plastic face cover too. Update 8/8 *Update: Lauren emailed me immediately after posting this review and and offered to provide a complimentary service, which I really appreciated but declined. It took me awhile to decide whether or not to post, I'll stick to the facts. I'd also like to say this is based on my last visit, which was the last week in June and under quarantine rules. *Lauren gave me a last minute appt so I could have my foilayage touch up before I started a new job. I really appreciated it! *I have been in for this service twice before, and loved the results previously. *Due to COVID restrictions, she was unable to blow dry my hair after the full foil + balayage service (aka foilayage) and haircut. *I paid $483 for these services, which included a 25% tip. The pictures attached are from the same day, I went home and blow dried and lightly straightened my hair. The pic with the mask was my hair just before the appointment. After the appointment, she followed up with me and asked me for pictures of my hair for social media. This is the first time she had asked (I am assuming because of quarantine), but I didn't see my pics posted at any point... I might have missed them, though. In my text, I mentioned that I thought there was a dark spot (I meant the darker blonde between the halo and the ends), but she didn't seem concerned. I felt bad and didn't want to seem ungrateful, so I said I liked it and figured I would just get used to it. Unfortunately I didn't, and ended up going back to brunette recently because I just felt sick about spending so much money on my hair only to not love it. I wanted to share my experience, just to be fair. I have posted a glowing review previously, my first trip to Mint. They have always had great customer service, but this time made me reconsider my hair and I am going back to basics. First review (2019, 5 stars) Easiest 5 stars I've ever given. Haircut and color consultation with Lauren. First, the communication prior to the appointment was thorough and clear. When I got to the salon, Lauren greeted me and we got started early. She asked good questions about my hair, current product and care habits and what I was looking for. I asked her for recommendations, which she provided. I never really thought other stylists I've seen were "rough" with my hair, but Lauren was very smooth throughout the wash, dry, cut and style. Hairdresser is Tava! I had been thinking of trading my shoulder length hair for a pixie cut for months and let me just say - I came to the right place!! To start, the salon is adorable and following very safe COVID guidelines. Tava is one of the best hair dressers I have ever had! I saw the great reviews for Mint and decided to give it a try, and set up an appointment with O'Neal after seeing other Yelpers' pictures of her work. I have naturally medium-blond hair that had gotten too long and blah, but O'Neal brightened it up with highlights and a cute easy-to-style lob. Had a really unprofessional email exchange with Lauren. I emailed her to discuss booking a balayage appointment. While scrolling through their instagram, I noticed a lot of their dark haired clients went to a specific stylist. So when I was answering her questions on what my hair was like and what I was looking for, I noted that and asked whether they had a precedent with referring black haired customers to specific stylists or if she was able to accommodate black hair well. All this to double check that she was comfortable with black hair. She responded with a snappy and rude email telling me to message the other stylist if I want and that I have until the end of the day to let her know if I want to move forward with her - completely ignoring my question, all my pictures and descriptions, and the fact that I made no indication that I didn't want to move forward with her. I ended up apologizing in case I had said anything offensive but the defensiveness and disrespect she showed to a good faith question really turned me off and I ended up canceling my appointment. Lisa is GREAT! On my first trip to Lisa I was coming off of a balayage from a different salon and was unhappy that it looked a little 2000s streaky with hard root lines and turned a little orange. She listened to my concerns and reassured me and absolutely knocked it out of the park. Very happy with my goldeny blonde balayage on darker brown hair. Not streaky at all and grows out really nicely. Also very clean and conscious of covid safety measures. Easy to talk to which I always appreciate for long hair sessions. Also need to mention I got my best hair cut from her ever. I have wavy/loose curly hair that tended to do what it wants. She cut my hair in a way I'd never seen before where she would do small pieces and cut it into a v so that my curls fall perfectly now. Ashlea did a great job with my naturally blonde hair to lighten it up with highlights and blend in the dreaded white hairs that are popping up. I wanted something that I can grow out into a rooty look and not have to do a lot of maintenance with highlights every 6 weeks. It's been about a month and the color keeps getting better as I regularly use a purple toning shampoo on it. She also did a nice job fixing a horrific haircut I got at another salon- it still needs to grow out more before it can be completely fixed, but I think it's as good as it can be for now. However, my last stylist decided to give me a "square" bob instead of a "rounded" bob--which she only told me after she had finished the cut. What really happened is she made the front of my hair shorter than the rest and everything in general just way too short (either by mistake of feeling rushed or bad technique I'm not sure). On top of that the last studio didn't understand me when I asked to get my hair colored (I don't know how) and only booked me for a cut AND color for 45 minutes. Total. So I got a chopped haircut and very minimal color to what should have been a pretty big touch up. Lucky (if that's what you call it) this was right before major lock downs from COVID so no one else had to see my disastrous cut and color except myself and my roommates. For five months. :( Fast forward to August: I was tired of feeling like my last hair studio and stylist just weren't listening to me. I needed a change and to find somewhere and someone who was invested in actually giving me what I wanted. Luckily I found Mint and Andrea :) I scrolled through the reviews here and pictures on Instagram for what I was personally looking for. Reviews for Andrea and her work looked like what I wanted so I made an appointment online which I appreciated *very* much because they let you describe everything about your hair and what you want. (I did this at my last studio and I don't think anyone ever read it.) For my appointment, Andrea started by asking about my history with my hair, what I was looking for and giving advice and ideas for how we could achieve that. I wanted a balayage with a solid cool toned light blonde at the bottom and most of my hair. No more highlights for me, just solid color faded in :) I had pictures of the last time my hair had been cut correctly and examples for what color/style I wanted now as the color was something different from what I'd had done previously. We spent a good time figuring out what I wanted and I could tell Andrea was seeing what I was hoping for and knew what to do. Andrea was very clear with what she was going to do and very careful with my haircut, ensuring that the unevenness of the previous cut was rectified and I could maintain a good enough length (that I had waited 5 months to regain, my hair grows very slowly lol). All in all, she was really helpful, friendly, and determined to get what I wanted done right--and she did! She is super friendly and I like her a lot other than just the styling. I absolutely love the cut and color and finally feel like I'm myself again after 5 months of torture with the bad cut. I found Mint through Yelp as I was in dire need of a haircut through quarantine and new to the neighborhood. I decided to book with Andrea for a cut and color, she reached out to understand what I was looking for and we were set. Arrived to the studio and I appreciate the thorough screening and COVID guidelines, as well as the distancing within the salon which made me feel pretty safe. I shared pics with Andrea on the ashy brown balayage highlights I was interested in getting and talked through my haircut. About 2.5-3 hours later she spins me around and I absolutely love my hair! Andrea did my hair yesterday and she did a wonderful job. She started by asking a ton of questions which I really appreciated as I'm a new client! We did a dry cut and chopped 3 inches off. I really needed and wanted it. Then a full foil which turned out wonderful. Followed by a wash, fantastic scalp massage and hair mask to tone. Things to expect - a Covid screening, questionnaire, temp check and no blow dry due to Covid. I selected Mint and Andrea based on reviews and how pleased reviewers were with their adherence to health department regs and the experience overall. It didn't disappoint and I'll be back! read more
