Super kind and non-judgemental atmosphere, and Lauren asked some great questions to feel out which direction I wanted to go in, including checking in and adjusting as she cut. For context, my hair is kind of annoying to cut because it looks straight but always flips out in crazy unflattering ways with many haircuts in the past. I came in for a haircut and balayage with Meegan. It was my first time getting any color in my hair. I expressed to her that I'm looking for something very delicate and natural since it's my first time and that I don't want to be overwhelmed by it, just something for fun and to see if I liked it. I also showed her photos and we discussed it. The result is not at all what I asked for, my hair is colored almost completely from the middle of my head down. The color looks like it has faded, even though I just got it. And there's a distinctive line in the middle of my head where the color starts. I am very disappointed to the point that I'm embarrassed of my hair color. I will never color my hair again . Wow, had such a great experience here. I complemented someone's hair at the PNA show and she said Eunice at Nola cut it. Based on that alone, I made an appt. and was so happy I did. I have had HUNDREDS of bad haircuts, some of which cost HUNDREDS of dollars. I even started cutting my hair myself for years since I figured I could screw it up for free. I have difficult to cut and color naturally wavy but also very fine hair. Eunice was masterful, beautiful cut and perfect color on my first visit. And their prices are much more reasonable than a lot of other salons in this unreasonably priced city. When I got home my friend - who has never complemented my hair in over 10 years - could not stop talking about how good it looked and immediately wanted the stylist's contact info so she could get her hair cut there as well. I went to Nola today for a bang trim. I have (or I guess I HAD) long swoopy curtain bangs. I just wanted them cleaned up and brought up a touch. Nyssa asked what length I wanted the shortest piece, basically how high did I want the bangs to start, and she said she could blend from there. I pointed to BELOW MY EYES. She said great and got to cutting. When she was done the shortest piece sat ABOVE MY EYEBROWS, a full two inches higher than where we'd discussed. I said "Oh, its shorter than I expected. I thought it'd be below my eye." She insinuated that it was my fault because she cut the shortest piece to below my eye and I should have known they'd end up shorter once dry. I know hair is shorter dry. When she asked "where do you want the shortest piece" I assumed we were talking about when its dry... because duh? My hair was dry when she asked the question, and wouldn't most people explain their ideal based on when they're hair is dry and styled? Not wet and pulled down for the cut?? I don't understand why the expectation would be that I tell her the length I'd like to see when wet??? I'll have to clip my bangs up for the next few months while this terrible cut grows out. That's annoying for sure, but its the insinuation that this was my fault that really upset me. Who in their right mind would indicate the length based on when its wet? And why would she not clarify and say "if I cut them here it'll actually sit up here when I'm done." You're the professional, don't blame me for the cut being shorter than what we talked about. read more

Did a 2x appointment to get bleached and toned. I have no idea what the F happened. There is a whole list of curse words I want to spew at Nola to be honest. Was worried when I saw pieces of my hair fly all over the place getting blow dried, but was told it was just breakage and the top half of some of my hair. I met Brandon at a shop in Fremont almost 9 yrs ago and he has brought his A game to every appt. Want to go short? Of course you do, it's hot outside. Going long? He will trim you up so you don't look trashy. Brandon tells me about how awesome the facial treatments are but I don't know anything about that. Maybe one of these days I'll give it a shot. One of those experiences where you walk in feeling you have amazing hair and walk out feeling that you have super shitty hair, so I have to write this review. I went in to get a cut and hair color. I have the kind of hair that if cut wrong it starts to get entangled and those amazing people at Bang have managed to avoid any entanglement incidents for me till now. But alas I got a hair cut and I have been experiencing entanglement just few days after the hair cut. The color I went to get in did not end up how I was hoping it to be. I was pretty explicit about how I went very thin strands of my hair colored but my request was ignored and color was slathered on huge section of my hair. I am not sure what happened here and the end result freaked me out, I went back to get it fixed but I feel like I wasted a lot of money for nothing, This place has a really high rating and getting an appointment can take time. I believe some of the service providers are really good and you have to actually wait to get them, I did not do it and I dont want other people to make this mistake. As a mixed-race, curly haired person, I have always struggled to find hair stylists that can actually cut my hair without making it look like a mushroom top! I did a little searching and decided to call (yes, actually CALL) Nola to talk with someone about which of their stylists may have experience cutting curly hair. From the beginning it was a great experience. The person on the phone was patient with me as I asked a bunch of different questions about their stylists and explained what I was looking for in a stylist. They partnered me with Jesse and I really couldn't be happier!! Jesse did an amazing job for me! I came in with hair that felt too long and weighted down. My curls were definitely not working FOR me. He took the time to talk with me about what it was I didn't like about my hair now, what my favorite haircut had been in the past, and what I thought I wanted for a change. He cut it dry first (which I always find works better for my hair texture), then washed, then cleaned it up. I got exactly what I wanted! Totally and completely worth it! We're working our way up to a curly haired mohawk style next and I can't wait. I highly recommend Nola and Jesse if you have curly hair and don't be afraid to be honest with him about what it is you want and don't want! It was a nice cut, and the staff were friendly, but the styling was pretty lazy... I asked for nice, tight curls since I was going on a trip and wanted it to last a while. But she just ran it through a straightener a little and like you can see, my hair has no real definition to it, it's more or less straight. By the time I was home even those faint waves were gone and I ended up having to fix my hair myself with a curling iron. I didn't want to stick around and ask her to fix it since at that point I didn't really trust what was being done to my hair. This was my big splurge for the trip and I definitely feel like I wasted my money for the hefty price. My advice for what it's worth is that the stylists listen a little more carefully to what the client wants and double check with them before they go that they like the styling, not just the length of their cut. read more

I have seen two stylists here. The first gave me solid cuts each time - nothing fancy or experimental but exactly what I was looking for and they each grew out really well. This week I came in after trying out another salon that was a little more convenient for me to get to - and even after going back to the stylist there to have them try to fix a pretty basic cut I had asked for, they still didn't get it right and thought it looked great. The Nola stylist I saw this week saw the problems with the other salon's cut right away and fixed things up while still maintaining the style I was looking for. All this is to say I'm going to keep coming here and recommend this place to others. The salon is comfy and stylish, both stylists I have seen have given me exactly what I asked for, and even made it better. And whereas another salon was going to recommend an expensive in-salon service for some color I was looking for - my stylist at nola showed me something I could buy online and do for myself on the cheap. I made an appointment to get my curly hair cut after reading reviews about Jesse, and hearing he was good with curly hair. He seems like a good stylist, but not for curly hair. He cut it exactly like straight hair would be cut, without any attention to the shape of the curls, or giving any styling advice. Even after washing and drying it myself, I feel like my hair now looks worse than before I got it cut. The layers are flat and straight, making my hair look triangular, exactly what I wanted to avoid. I am disappointed to have paid $70+ for a haircut I feel like I could have gotten at any big-box salon. I will be looking for a different curly hair stylist. (I am keeping two stars because he does seem experienced, and was pleasant to talk to, and would likely be a good fit for someone with straight hair). read more

I was agreed with the price but when I was about to pay she suddenly charge me $120 I asked why she said because it took me 20 minutes long. I was like that's not my problem if took you long probably is because you got frustrated drying my hair really the woman was sweating and I saw her face getting angry and frustrated. So basically I had to paid $20 extra because she took her time she doesn't know how to blowout hair I should charge her for my time she made me waste . She is slow and i had to pay for it . I was going in for a big change--after my whole life having long hair (like, mid back at the shortest), I decided I wanted to cut it to a bit above my collar bones. This was probably over a foot off from the length I had! After reading, I chose to see Jesse. He was pretty late finishing up the customer before me, but I forgave him once he turned his attention to me, because any lateness is clearly caused by the care and attention he gives each person and cut. I showed him a couple pictures, and he asked me what I liked about them, and then talked me through his plan for my hair. Since I was new to the salon and thus he didn't know my hair, he cut it dry to start to get it to around the right length, just to make sure that he wasn't surprised by it drying curlier than expected and too short. Then we did the wash and cleaning up the cut, adding texture, etc. He was very respectful of my desires, and my adamant assurances that I do NOT style my hair, I don't own a blow dryer or any product, and that I don't plan to change it. He actually had me air dry my hair instead of a blow out--I know to some people that might seem like a bad thing, but he asked if I thought it was a good idea, and I did. Since I'll never blow dry my hair, it's just a better idea of what it will actually look like for me, no surprises after the first wash. Really nice especially when this is such a big change for me! He did put a bit of product in my hair to make sure that I walked out looking great, but no pressure to buy it. I've gotten compliments from everybody I've seen since, even people who I thought didn't know me at work. Jesse did a great job, and was pleasant to chat with too (something I rarely enjoy with my haircuts). Didn't feel any nerves about chopping off so much, and still feel great about the decision and the cut! read more

They might have great stylists for reasonable prices, but I'll pay $30 more for a salon that goes above and beyond...by answering the phone. The service I wanted was one of the only ones that was listed on their services, but didn't actually have a price range. So naturally, I scheduled an appointment and thought I'd call about pricing. No exaggeration, I must have called them at least 5 times over the course of two weeks and never spoke to someone. It would ring until the voicemail option came every single time. That's frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating as having left a message and NEVER received a call back or answer to my question. If you're not going to answer the phone and you are a service establishment, at least return your messages. Furthermore, their website doesn't list any contact information except for the address and phone number. A phone number, that no one picks up! I was really excited to try this place because I've heard great things, but like I said, for a difference of $20-$30 I'll spend extra to know that my business is appreciated. I called Bocz salon in downtown Seattle instead and they were able to fit me in for a comparable price. read more

Steph Popovici is awesome in style, technique, and personality! Being new to Seattle, I was dreading finding a new stylist-- so I haven't-- for 5 months now! I finally started yelping places and stylists and ran across the great reviews of Nola and Steph. Yelpers did not disappoint! The place is small, clean, quirky, and cute. It's not overcrowded or overly loud. And my haircut began on time and ended on time. (Note* I hate when you get shampooed and then sit in the waiting area another 15 mins for your cut...not at this place!). Overall, Steph as a stylist, listens to your wants and delivers! She was also very helpful in referring out for other services (make-up, up-do, etc...). I am rarely happy with new stylists and also pick apart things I would change with either my hair or the experience in general but not this time. I highly recommend this place, and more specifically Steph. My only complaint is the $7 parking in the lot next to the salon so I'd come early and see if street parking is available. With that being said, the cut itself was very reasonably priced so it won't hurt your pocket book to pay for parking if street parking isn't available :) read more

Go there! I have thin - curly hair and needed someone to really give me a good haircut. I've been to several other salons in the Seattle area and was feeling dismayed. Jesse cut my hair amazingly well and he really took the time hear me out on what I needed. He also took his time cutting my hair and really focused on it too. I definitely feel I will go back. I've been coming to Donna Jean here at Nola for years, and she's as good as it gets! She's a great stylist that does great work, and is super easy to get along with. Finding someone who can cut your hair well is one challenge, but I've also often found that regardless of the quality of the haircut, if the conversations you end up having with your stylist are super painful, it makes the whole experience awkward. I decided to check Nola out for a Brazilian wax based on the reviews I found here on Yelp and I'm so glad I did! For the last few years, I've been searching all over Seattle for a fantastic waxing place and I FINALLY found it! My appointment was with Anya and she was superb! She was genuine and got right down to business. I think I was in and out in under 15 minutes and she got EVERYTHING. She was super quick and extremely thorough. She triple checked everything and ran through with a tweezer to ensure nothing was missed. She was very helpful during the more painful parts as well by letting me know when I should take a deep breath and how far along we were. She also kept the conversation going and I LOVE her laugh. I came here for my first time. "Take everything off from the waist down. Your head goes on this side of the bed and your bottom goes here. I will leave the room and will give you plenty of time to get settled then I'll come back." Then I lay on the bed as if I'm in an alien thriller movie where I'm about to be poked and prodded. Aaaand proceed to wax everything down thurr. It hurt. Oh goodness did it hurt. Except despite all these, my waxes have gone over as well as they could. Between friendly questions, I often forget the awkwardness of my positioning and am only reminded of what's even going on by the unmistakable pain of being waxed. Now don't let me scare you too much. It hurts but it's not unbearable. The pain lasts for literally the second the hair is pulled off you then it goes away quickly. Also, the ladies here care so much about your comfort so they're happy to let you take breaks. I have moved on to other forms of hair removal since and live and work too inconveniently from here to become a regular. That said, I would suggest this for those looking for good waxers. Both ladies worked on me and they were equally good. You will be comfortable throughout the process and will leave feeling clean. read more

I'm not a huge fan of a lot awkward small talk, and when you're sitting in a chair at most salons, this is exactly what you get. Luckily, for me I've found the perfect place to avoid exactly that. All of the stylists are cool and down to earth. They provide hair advice where needed. Discussion comes naturally, but there is also perfect mutual un-awkward silence which is sometimes what I think we both need after a long hectic day. I've been hooked every since, not only is she professional but she's funny, fast, efficient, cool as cucumber, understands my skin (it's very sensitive), and is a great listener. Eunice has cut my hair twice, I have short fine hair and was looking for someone who understood how to work with my fine texture and cut a shag.
