Here is why I love having her do my hair: She is really in touch with trends, but is super creative and loves to work in a unique twist, that is inspired by my personal style. :) Color - Last time I was in, we worked with the ombre trend, but she added a few blonde and red pieces that went all the way to my root, with some fire-y red ombre style chunks all over and little peeks of black. Also, the color is a-symmetrical, one side has more blonde, and the other, more red. Turned out so cool! The cut - usually, I think my hair looks better worn up, but since Amy has been cutting it, I love wearing it down. Finally, she is so friendly and a joy to chat with. Amy has been doing my hair for awhile, but she just started at Kitty Hawk. What a cool space, easy to find, easy free parking and the shop is really cute and clean! I've been seeing April at Kitty Hawk for about eight years. I've been in twice for cuts during COVID and have been so impressed by the precautions Kitty Hawk is taking. The 3-4 work stations are all spaced very far apart and, in my experience, often only 1-2 stylists are working at a time. The stylists are sanitizing between clients and there's no waiting in the salon. When I came in, April had me sanitize my hands and took my temperature. We both kept masks on the whole time, of course. Additionally, the fact that I've been seeing April for so long speaks for itself - her cuts are perfect and her color work is exceptional. April has taken me through a billion shades of blonde, with the occasional pastel and one bright blue. April always listens so carefully to what I want, and I've loved every cut. I always tell Darcie that if I become rich and famous, I will fly her out to me when I want a haircut. She is that good, and I value the time that I spend with her that much. For someone with seemingly straight easy to deal with hair, it is not that easy to cut my hair. First of all, I always want to look like a high fashion male model or European soccer player, and I demand my stylist to keep up with the current trends in celebrity fashion and styling. Darcie is beyond hip. She is not a crusty old lady. Secondly, I think that I have a malformed head and Darcie is able to cut and style my hair perfectly despite that setback. To top it all off, Darcie and Lorraine are beautiful women with colorful stories. And when they're not telling a tale about their wild pasts, they are good listeners. Words can't express how much I love Kitty Hawk. When you're a guy, it's tough to find a decent hair salon, since an unfortunate majority of your gender tends to go to barber shops or those walk-in places in the middle of shopping malls. I read the awesome reviews on here (before Mikey posted), and decided I'd drop Lorraine a line. Does she do haircuts for men? (Always have to ask, since people raving about their hair salons tend to be women). Yes! Does she have an appointment this week? Yes! Will she cater to my anti-social nature by letting me book an appointment and ask all my questions over email? Yes! And does she know what she's doing? Abso-f'ing-lutely. It's unfortunate that, upon getting a bad haircut, I tend to look like I'm going bald. I'm not, in fact, going bald, but my hair is thin enough that a very short cut makes it look that way. Absolutely fantastic color. I brought my daughter to get her hair colored violet. She (my daughter) had some definite ideas that I knew weren't going to look great. Val talked with her about what would look for natural for her style and yet be easily maintained, which I SO appreciated. She did an amazing job and she absolutely loves it, as does everyone else who sees it. Although it is bright purple, she somehow weaved it into her hair in a way that looked very natural. Lovely little salon, hard to tell it's there from the outside but once you enter, it's a stylish little sanctuary with great products and great hairstylists. Just over a year later and I hope I never have to find another hair salon. I make the commute from the Eastside right past all those fancy over-priced Bellevue salons just get my haircut here. I did end up getting that pixie cut late last spring and it looks amazing. April knows just how to cut my hair to give it a great shape that's both cute and manageable and grow out nicely. She's also a great colorist - her color mixes have been spot on what I'm looking for and the color stays vibrant for weeks on end - something hard to do with red. There are now four rocking stylists here and they all seem to have fairly busy schedules. You can book your appointment online, which is awesome. Additionally, April has always been pretty responsive to emails and she's gone out of her way to juggle some appointments for me a few times. While April was on maternity leave I got a color and cut with Darcie (the owner), who is also very talented and did a terrific job. I've seen the work of all four ladies and I can't imagine anyone ever leaving here unhappy. The stylists are all great listeners, very communicative, and will even consult with each other or give suggestions when asked if a client has a question about a cut or color, etc. The atmosphere is always warm and cozy and Darcie's Boston Terrier, Ruby, is sure to give you a friendly greeting when you come in. read more

I've had the pleasure of seeing Val Arras for cut and color for my past four visits. Yesterday, Val did a Keratin treatment (my first) on my hair and WOW. My hair has never been straight and I cried (twice) with how beautiful it looks. We also did color and a cut yesterday and to say I feel like a new woman is an understatement. Val listens, is incredibly talented, fun and kind. She also has a number appointment options, so despite my insane schedule I can get in to see her. Additionally, APRIL is super, duper amazing. She also is a great listener, creative and has always done lovely, creative and frankly challenging cuts on my hair (sometimes I ask for the impossible and she makes it work)! walked in for my first visit planning a pretty big change in both length and color - i probably should have been more cautious on a first visit with a new stylist, but i'm impatient and it 100% paid off here. Today was one of those, "wow I love my hair" days and it made me realize....oops, I've procrastinated on reviewing the person who made this possible. Thank you Amy Bates for being an AMAZING stylist and wonderful lady! I highly recommend Amy to anyone who is looking for a very talented stylist/colorist. Amy really takes the time (and it did take some time with me) to listen to what you want, analyze color options and make recommendations based on the look you want to achieve and maintenance you are willing to do. She's not afraid to be honest and give direction either and this is why I respect her as a stylist. I am remiss in writing a review for Lorraine. She's a great listener, fun to chat with, gives an awesome scalp massage, and absolutely knows her stuff. I've had my long hair cut super short into a very edgy/stylish cut, that even when growing out continued to get compliments on. I strayed away, wanting to budget and have been underwhelmed with other stylists. She's the triple threat. Intuitive, fun communicator and talented. Finding the right hair stylist has been like finding a needle in a haystack. She now takes care of my long hair. Keeping it easy for me to style under 5 mins. She gives me sexy hippie chic haircuts with gorgeous fringe. And always nails my color. I get more compliments on my hair whenever she does it. I have been getting my hair cut by Darcie for at least a year and I have gotten everything from long layers to a short bob with bangs and it always looks great. I have come in on a number of occasions without knowing exactly what I want. She always asks the right questions to figure out what I want and what will work best. I came in right before I was going backpacking in Europe for a month. I told her I needed a haircut that I could wash and go. I have frizzy/wavy hair so I was a little worried this wasn't possible but she gave me a wonderful layered haircut. It totally worked out! I could put it up and it looked great when I just washed it, after I got rained on, even when I hadn't washed it in a few days. I don't like hair salons. Not that I don't appreciate a sharper looking me or someone carefully shampooing my hair while I ponder some non-problems. What I don't like are salons that remind me of toothpaste ad labs and where the perfect hair and make-up seem the only things in life worth striving for. Kitty Hawk is different. It's completely and utterly unpretentious. The salon's interior resembles a relaxing, coolly furnished living room. There's no smell of chemicals. It's not loud, not crowded. And then there's is Lorraine. She is calm, lovely, and talks about the coolest places in town. Her cuts are meticulous. There is no rush, ever. She thoroughly examined my hair at my first appointment - and I pointed out that a stressful time last year showed up in my hair (I had no idea). My hair is wavy to curly, rather thin and a bit difficult to handle. When I leave, it's bouncy with a smidge edginess - just the way I like it. read more

April is amazing. Not only is she easy to talk to and smart and interesting - she gives incredible haircuts. I have boring straight hair and I have no time to deal with it - I brush it in the AM and that's it, no styling, no hair drying. April gave me a cut that makes it look like I blow it dry to curl in. It frames my face perfectly and requires no work. She listened carefully to what I wanted and my realistic time frame and worked with me. I've had several cuts in the past that looked great on the day I left the salon but I couldn't make it look that way again - no April's cuts. My hair looks great every day even with my low maintenance style. On my 2nd visit to April, she highlighted my hair and did a superb job. I had my first appointment with April yesterday afternoon, after finding the salon on Yelp. I'm really pleased with the way my cut and color turned out. I am not great at doing a lot of styling and upkeep, and also wanted to keep enough length to be able to tie my hair up for the gym and on days when I don't feel like dealing with it. April gave me a cut and beautiful highlights that make me feel stylish, but simple enough I can manage on my own. IN LOVE! I moved to Seattle a couple of months ago and was in serious need of a hair change! Val is INCREDIBlE. This review is really just going to me gushing about how amazing Val is, not only a stylist, but also as a person! She spoiled me beyond belief, and has the passion and skill set to give you want you want but better! She is so so so kind and honestly transformed my hair! I went from long, dead bleach blonde/green stained hair to a beautiful brown bob! (I will post pics!) She truly listened to me, while also knowing exactly what I needed. I don't think I realized how big of project this would be and I felt bad taking up so much of her time. With that said, Val was so graceful and spent nearly 5 hours making sure it was perfect. I expressed my guilt on how long the process was taking (and only because again, this really was a transformation and she spoiled me!), but she expressed how she didn't mind how long it took, as long as it was done right! This is a woman who loves what she does and I truly felt honored to be a client to someone with such passion. The cut is so precise and more amazing than I could have hoped for. I LOVE KITTY HAWK! GO SEE AMY! I waited months to do anything with my hair after getting the worst haircut of my life at another salon, so by the time I got to Amy, my hair was in pretty rough shape. Amy is amazing. First of all, she's the loveliest person. She listened as I explained all of the things I hated about my last haircut, mixed up perfect blond highlights, and simply transformed my hair. Gone were the grown-out disaster bangs and layers, and in their place was a sophisticated, yet fun style that flattered my face. The color was spot-on, and Amy is the first stylist I've ever had who actually took the time to apply partial highlights so well that it doesn't matter whether I wear my hair up or down - my natural color and my highlights blend wonderfully, so there's no awkward difference between the underside of my ponytail and the top. I cannot compliment Amy enough. Everything about Kitty Hawk is fantastic. It's in a great little residential area with plenty of free street parking, and the salon itself is small and welcoming. It's the kind of place you walk into and immediately know you're going to get personalized service from people who actually want to make you look your best. This place is awesome. I was getting increasingly fed up with the service I was getting at my former salon, and was looking for a change. I read some reviews for Kitty Hawk on Yelp and I couldn't have come to a better place! It's a charming little salon with a very warm and relaxing environment. Bonus: As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the cutest little Boston terrier! So I had scheduled my first appointment online, which was easy as pie. And like a total jerk, I ended up missing my appointment. April was super understanding about it all, and actually got me penciled in for an appointment the very next day. It was so nice of her, considering I wasn't one of her established clients. About the service: April is a hair GENIUS. I came in for a cut and color and came out with something way better than I had expected! She did a great job of meshing what I wanted and some of her own suggestions. My color turned out amazing. And she accomplished a near impossible feat of taking the heaviness out of my long and thick hair. Also a huge plus: They don't use any of those harsh chemical products that smell and feel awful. I'm a week out from the best haircut I have ever had. Thank you April! April did an amazing job of listening to what I had in mind and providing input on what could work with my hair. I have slightly wavy hair, with a lot of volume. I don't know how many times I have explained that to a hair stylist, had them nod, and then cut and style my hair. It usually looked good coming out of the salon that day with the product and expertise of the hairstylist. But one wash, and the next day I was Hermione from Harry Potter. April gave me a great haircut that kept the length I wanted, with long layers, and a side bang. I can wash it, air dry it, and wear it out. The layers somehow de-frizz the hair so well, and it naturally dries with these great waves and flips. It looks even better flat-ironed. Kitty Hawk itself is a great space, very clean and artistically decorated. It is unique and personalized, so that you don't feel like you are walking into a hair cutting machine. Lorraine you are the best! I came in after being over two years to get my hair done, busy mom with two kids. I decided I wanted get a long bob haircut longer in the front shorter in the back, and ombre hair color blonde with my natural black hair. My haircut turned out absolutely amazing loved it, my hair color I wasn't to happy because it wasn't a lighter blonde, but Lorraine let me know I can come back to get it redone, try it out for a week and if I didn't like come back, she is super nice! I came to Kitty Hawk last week to get my first true salon haircut since June 2012. Having thought this out, I had picked out some pictures of what I was looking for. I had long medium brown hair extending at least 12 inches from the nape of my neck. My appointment was at 9am, and I was the only person in the salon with my stylist, April. This could be an uncomfortable situation, but April was incredibly friendly and relatable. She made sure the coffee she made me was perfect. The ambiance of the salon is very friendly and welcoming with fantastic local art hanging on the walls. What I appreciated more than anything was her concern for making sure I was on board with everything needed to happen to give me a cut similar to the pics I showed her. It meant taking off a decent bit of hair, which was great because upon her inspection the hair needed to be taken off (it was dead). It also included cutting some bangs, which I had not had in about 8 years. The haircut was beautiful when I walked out the door, but I've taken a week to write the review to see how it settled in. It still looks amazing and is very easy to style! I have received numerous compliments from coworkers and friends. I have no doubt that I will continue going to see April as long as I am living in Seattle. read more

Lorraine cut my hair in early August, and I cannot recommend her enough. Three things happened 1) my husband commented on it right away--he didn't just like it, he loved it. I love April! I've been going to her for several months- I initially went to her because I'm a natural blonde that had always wanted to try a dark red look. I had never gone dark and she gave me such a wonderful and dynamic color and cut(I have shoulder-length thin hair that is awkwardly between straight and wavy- it can look super weird with a bad cut) I gave her an idea of what I wanted and the results were better than I had hoped for. Somehow even as the color naturally faded between visits it still looked good. And each visit since has been just as great! Also, she's an incredibly lovely person. The space on 19th is a great location in a quiet part of Capitol Hill. It's easy to get to on foot and there's plenty of street parking. Lorraine takes her time to give a proper cut and her prices are reasonable. I LOVE that I can make appointments by emailing her and she gets back to me right away with several options time options based on my requirements. If you don't have a lot of time for phone tag, this is a great scheduling alternative. Darcie has also cut and colored my hair and she is great as well. I haven't gotten 2 haircuts from the same person since high school, but I know I'll be going back to April. I chose her based on a review that described the way she handled a client with hair that sounded very much like mine (LOTS of fine hairs). I went in with hair that was 7 months past a haircut at a different place on Capitol Hill which left me with hair fried from highlights and a ton of split ends even after the cut (I think the stylist was overwhelmed by the amount of hair I had and after both highlighting and dyeing it, got impatient with the hair cut portion and cut corners.) My husband had started to call it my lioness mane because of how big and out of control it tended to be. I told April that I wanted to get rid of the damage, to keep most of the length, and to emulate the best hair cut I'd ever gotten, which gave me long layers and thinned out my hair quite a bit. She did just that! She was able to get rid of most of the top layers of highlight-damaged hair, but knew that I wanted to keep long layers so we agreed that I'll come back in a couple of months and that she'll cut off a bit more then, so that I can slowly get rid of the damage while keeping a look that I like the whole time. She lightened up the volume of my hair a LOT which I absolutely love. My hair doesn't tend towards a triangle shape now; instead it's got lots of volume at the crown of my head and then continues down to just look nice and even. She blended this weird ass bang thing that I got at my last appointment into something lovely and face-framey - so much so that I might ask her to keep cutting it that way, rather than just growing it out like I'd been planning. And the way she layered my hair means that when I wash and air dry it, the curls really come out! But I can also flat iron it and it takes WAY less time since I have so many fewer hairs to straighten. Finding someone who understands what I want, gives a great haircut and who doesn't make me feel awkward?! I'll be back in a couple of months for another cut and to develop a long-term plan to manage my newly acquired gray hair situation.
