I'm one of those women who waits until she can't stand her hair for one more second and then goes searching for a same-day appointment. Though it was my first visit, Haven answered my desperate plea and gave me an appointment with Sara. The space is lovely, with soft music and good lighting, and a tiny dog who happily greets you. I didn't have to wait; Sara was ready for me and we had a little consultation regarding my frizzy grays, which involved some whining on my part and a lot of Pinterest haircut examples on much younger women. I asked for a scissors-only cut as razors on my hair are like nails on a chalkboard. She happily complied and mentioned she almost never uses razors. Sara got to work, and 45 minutes later, she had somehow synthesized the 30 different cuts I had shown her into one that worked for me and that I love. Sara was also personable without being too chatty (I like a stylist who focuses on my hair) and had a calming demeanor. I was going to come & update my review for Lisa & give a covid-times update but I see I've never reviewed her in the first place. Maybe because the first time I came to see her I was traumatized by asking another stylist for a shoulder length cut and ending up with a cheekbone-short asymmetrical thing that didn't work for me and got worse as it grew out. You curlies know how extra long that takes! So, my first cut with Lisa, I held my breath and hoped she could re-shape my curls without losing TOO much of that hard-fought length and she did! Honestly, I get my hair-cut max twice a year. Sometimes like every other year. But, Lisa always knows just how to snip my curls so they look great no matter the length-- which keeps me coming back. Ok, covid times update: on the day I was there Lisa & one other stylist were working and each had one client. We all wore masks and were across the salon from each other. I booked online with Nancy who I had never seen before. The cut was only OK, she gave me more of a blunt cut than what we discussed and I didn't like it. But when it came time to wash my hair she did it without putting a towel around my neck. By the time I noticed the upper part of my clothes were pretty soaked. I shared photos of styles I liked and that I needed a cut that would last an extended period of time since I'd be leaving the country. I wish I had the same experience as everybody else but unfortunately, I did not. After reading all of the rave reviews I went to see Alisha to cut my curly hair. The first cut was good, I wanted a regular haircut but she convinced me to do the Deva cut, even though I told her I was wary because these specific cuts have never worked for me in the past. But I let her do it, partly because she told me that I would not have to get my haircut for another 3 months. I was willing to give it a shot and pay the extra money for it, especially since I would be able to wait so much longer between cuts. I needed my haircut again seven weeks later, which didn't make me super happy. But I went back since I was decently happy with the first cut. The second cut was bad. I don't know how else to describe it. The shape is bad. The proportions are bad. The layers are bad. It was unflattering right away. After maybe two weeks I decided to contact her and ask her if she could fix it since it was not working out. I never like doing that but I'm always encouraged to let them revise a cut if I'm not happy. She texted me back within a few hours and offered a few dates and times. None of those worked for me so I let her know what was better and asked her to please get back to me with one of the newly proposed dates or times. I never heard from her again. so I'm sad that I need to go find a new hairdresser and sad that I am stuck with a haircut for which I paid almost $100 and is very unflattering :( read more

I've never in my life had a haircut I was happy with, until now. I can't believe it took me this long to seek out a curly-hair expert. Ingrid is a hair goddess! I've had such horrible experiences at salons that it's worse than going to the dentist for me. I had resigned myself to getting a bad haircut and letting it grow out, or doing it myself, which was ok but it takes me three hours and I can't see the back of my head. I am so, so happy I came to Haven. Ingrid was appropriately horrified when I showed her what I had left with from the last time I saw a hairdresser (over a year ago and it was an abomination, a familiar experience for me which is why I have usually cut my own). She explained how a Deva cut is different, and got to know my hair before diving in with the scissors. She somehow made my hair curlier, more defined, and added more volume. She taught me how to care for it and style it myself, and while I can't get it as amazing looking as she did, of course, I'm doing it way better than I could before. I've had many hairdressers claim they were giving me a Deva haircut before, but theirs were nothing in comparison to the care, precision, and level of detail executed by Lisa. Ballard continues to impress me. I love Ballard and all the great finds one stumbles upon around here. The latest secret discovery? Haven Salon. Hearing about Haven from a friend, I stopped by to see what it was all about. Let's start off with the cute little park they have alongside the northern part of their building. SO CUTE! There is outdoor seating, a fountain, and greenery in this cute little area which just looks very Zen and relaxing. I was told this is where clients like to go and hang out during their color setting, etc. How cool is that? I walked inside and saw a very hip salon before me. The salon was refreshing and airy with great window light and had very chic décor. The setting was very inviting and I kind of wanted to just hang out there. And I kind of did. I learned about the new management and the changes they were undergoing with the product lines. I talked to one of the stylists, Lisa, and with no intentions of being disloyal to my current salon, I curiously asked her what ideas she had for my super fine hair type and she talked about a few changes I could make to get more volume. I couldn't help it, I made an appointment for a cut and color. Fast forward to appointment day. I arrived 15 minutes early for my appointment and Lisa took me right in and was ready to get started. We talked through a thorough plan for my cut and color so it was very clear what she was going to do. I noticed Lisa is very neat and tidy when applying color, unlike a lot of stylists who get sloppy where you're scrubbing color off your ears, forehead, and neck for days. With the cut, Lisa knew I really wanted to get the volume going and did a fantastic job with dramatic layering in all the right areas. She also enlightened me about the use of velcro rollers for more volume. I bought them yesterday and used them for my night out last night - best tip ever! So how did it turn out? I'm proud to say... TOTALLY FABULOUS! I love my new haircut and I'm so excited about it! From the cozy setting to the Zen park to the natural products, to the reasonable prices, to most importantly, my awesome new cut and color, I have given up my loyalty to my routine salon of 5+ years. My next appointment has been booked at Haven and I'm so sold it's ridiculous. I recommend Haven and Lisa to everyone! I saw my mom later who has no filter and she blurted out, "wow, whoever did your hair did a much better job than the place you normally go to." I have been seeing Ingrid for almost 7 years and as long as she is doing hair, I will follow her to any salon. Now she's at Haven so I am too! Service overall is friendly, salon is clean, nice space not too crowded. Water and tea available, some hair care products for purchase. And a perfect little back patio for hanging out in when your hair is setting. Easy street parking, pay to park right out front or find free neighborhood parking a block or two away. No complaints. Plug for Ingrid: Never found a stylist who knows just what to do with my wavy half-Asian hair. And I've gone everywhere -- not even my experiences at salons Downtown can compare. Even though she's very booked, she will fit you in where she can and loves new customers! 2) The salon was clean and cute. Haven sells hair accessories and jewelry from a local boutique, current curly hair product, and has an eclectic atmosphere, all while being very clean! 3) Lisa is very knowledgeable. Wow! Alisha did a phenomenal job on my hair! (My girlfriend LOVES it, and isn't that the most important part anyway???) Best haircut and overall experience I've had at a hair salon to date. My girlfriend has actually been coming here for a while because Alisha does long curly hair so well, but turns out she's great at super thick hair on guys too! I also added on a deep condition, which felt amazing during the process (I basically got a heavenly 15 minute head massage), and it feels amazing a day later (super smooth and strong). Kayla is magic!! I had my hair cut and highlighted (balayage blonde with additional foil highlights) this past Friday just before a girls' weekend. Best idea ever!! I walked out feeling beautiful, confident and ready to show off my new look. I've been seeing Kayla for a couple of years now. She is great at listening to what I want and offering solutions that are both healthy for my hair and will get the results that I want. I've done the balayage in the past and mentioned to her this visit, that I love the natural look of it, but wanted something with a little more pop! She suggested a full balayage with additional foil highlights to give it that extra pizzazz. After spending almost 3 hours on my hair (including a deep conditioning treatment with a scalp massage....she has magic hands), Kayla was patient, friendly and professional. (Balayage is a bit time-consuming but she also took her time to cut and style my hair afterwards.) It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I cannot stop looking at my hair when I pass a mirror or window. I truly love it. The Haven Salon is an eclectic salon nestled upstairs from an art gallery. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff are super friendly. You are offered water, tea, or coffee when you walk in and have a choice of a few seating places to sit if you are early. They also have a wide selection of hair products (which I love to browse while I wait) as well as makeup to test. I also take my 14 year old son and 12 year old daughter. Okay- I am very picky about stylists because I love my long locks and some people don't know how to cut them. I was so happy coming here. I saw Alisha, me and a girlfriend came to her and she booked us back to back so we could have a girls day. She not only cut my friends curly locks perfectly, and styled it perfectly. She took my scraggly hair which I can't get to hold a curl and made me a bombshell. My hair feels amazing- it's pretty inexpensive for amazing result. It's a small little salon but very clean and they even have a small garden you can hang out it while waiting (super cute). Amazing scalp massage, products are wonderful and leave your hair feeling fresh. This place is amazing If you have curly hair. I had pored over what salon to go to for my second-ever haircut (honestly, hair cuts scare me) in my 30 years, and I was looking for someone who knew how to cut my ridiculous red, crazy, thick, frizzy, wavy/loose curl hair. I called and it was Alisha who answered the phone, so I scheduled with her (they also have the most DevaCut certified stylists according to my searches). I drove to Ballard from Seatac because of these stellar reviews. Upon walking into this charming & pristine salon, I was greeted with friendly hellos and genuine smiles. EVERY single stylist in there was conversational and sweet and the customers all seemed very happy. My hair was down to my rear end, and looked like I had been electrocuted, it was so frizzy. Alisha knew I was nervous. She was patient with me and explained how she was going to cut my hair, and she made sure I was comfortable. She started with the dry haircut and cut off 10 inches plus some trimming. After the dry hair cut, we moved to the shampoo and conditioning treatments. My hair is always ridiculously frizzy and dry, and the hard water at my home is ridiculous, so she gave me a deep condition and a massage. It. Felt. Amazing. I had also scheduled a wax for my eyebrows, jawline, lip, and chin, which she took care of during my deep conditioning. It was next to painless for me and my face felt wonderful afterwards. All-in-all, I am so happy I called Haven and I would like to reassure anyone searching who may have the extreme case of nerves I had. They will treat you so kindly and listen to what you want and give honest opinions. I will be going back, as they really helped me kind of chill out on this fear of haircuts. Alisha is an angel. Alright first off, thank you to everyone on Yelp who guided me to Alisha. You have no idea how thankful I am to you all. And a huge thanks goes to Alisha especially. I walked in with my crazy, thick, used to be curly but now only wavy, hair at 7:30 pm on a Monday. While I know that is a valid appointment time, I also don't want to be that last pain in the butt customer someone has to deal with. Alisha never made me feel like that once. Sitting in her chair was like catching up with a girlfriend you had not seen in a while. I almost forgot we were there for my hair! I have asked other folks in the past for the same cut I got...I usually end up walking out not getting what I wanted. Not only did Alisha do that, she was able to do it in 45 min.
