I am so sorry to be giving a one star review to this salon. I called today to request a refund for the worst haircut I've ever had. The very kind person on the phone explained that the salon absolutely offers refunds when clients are unhappy, but that they cannot do so in this case. The stylist I had, Michelle Clifton, only leases a chair at the salon - she is not an employee of Salon Joseph. But I feel I was treated terribly, and each time I see myself in the mirror I want to cry, and I do not know how else to seek recourse or record my experience. I had an appointment with Michelle last Wednesday, where I expected something similar to what she had done a couple times in the past (longer layers, some shorter ones around my face). By the end of the appointment, I raised concerns about the shortest layer seeming too short and too big at the back, and blunt and uneven at the front. Michelle seemed to strike a defensive tone, told me that I should take a couple days to get used to it, and that I would love it. I got home and asked my husband to confirm that he saw what I was seeing. I emailed Michelle the next morning (Thursday) with pictures, saying I was very concerned and hoping the back and front could be fixed. She replied Friday morning and said I could come in midday for an adjustment, which I appreciated. When I got there and reiterated my concerns, she indicated that 1) short layers was what I asked for, and 2) I just did not understand what short layers were supposed to look like, since I wasn't used to them. Even if I had asked for short layers all around (and I did not), the photos show that the shortest layer was blunt and uneven, and sat like a shelf above the rest of my hair. When I showed Michelle the picture with the blunt diagonal line in the back, she said it only looked like that because I had used a flat iron. (??) In any case, she did some adjusting. I thanked her and left. When I got home, I realized that the front still looked uneven and unblended, and I emailed expressing that I was upset and was unsure what to do. Michelle said she was "genuinely sorry that we weren't able to land on something that felt right for you" and suggested I find a new stylist moving forward. I replied that I would find a new stylist, but that I was now going to have to pay someone else to fix my hair, and the situation had cost me a great deal of time and money. I said I would appreciate it if she would consider a partial refund (I paid $180 -- 150 for the cut and 30 for tip). She replied that she was not able to offer a refund due to "all the time she had spent," but offered to return my tip as a "gesture of goodwill." When I went to another salon on Monday, I asked if the stylist could even out the fringe/layers at the front. She said - unprompted - "Do you also want me to address the back?" I said I could not see the back and thought it had been fixed. She said, and I quote, "It looks like a haircut on top of a haircut." She also noted that the layering was blunt and uneven overall. She spent an hour trying to blend things out but couldn't fully fix it, and encouraged me to come back in a couple months for more blending. (Indeed, the short layer still pops up like a helmet unless I blow-dry and use a flat iron, which I don't have time to do every day.) I paid full price for another haircut, though the new stylist charged me less than Michelle's rate of $150 because she felt so bad for me! I wrote to Michelle that I was disappointed about the offer to return only the tip, and puzzled by her reference to "all the time" she had spent. I was under the impression that it was industry standard to offer a complimentary adjustment and then a refund if the hair is too short to correct, as mine is. I mentioned what the other stylist said about the structural issues with the cut, and that I believed my concerns had been valid. Michelle sent me my $30 tip. Each step of the way, from the concerns I raised at my first appointment, Michelle made me feel gaslit, like there was nothing wrong with the haircut, that this was the outcome I asked for and I was simply too picky and difficult to please. I hope it is evident from the photos below that I was not being unreasonable. I appreciate that none of us is perfect, and we all make mistakes, even professional hairstylists who ordinarily do amazing work. But when mistakes happen, I do not think it is right that the client should have to pay for it, especially when they have no choice but to wear the result. read more

Alright, I gave the treatment time, and now I am reviewing after about a month of it being in my hair. I got the Cezanne treatment done. I am going to write as honest a review as possible. I have gotten this treatment done in the past, and will compare. Usually, the treatment is about 100-150$ cheaper than it cost here. I understand that covid have hurt businesses, so it was fine that it was more pricey. Usually, the stylist washes my hair with the special shampoo in the salon, blowdries it, applies the treatment, leaves in on for at least 30 minutes, washes it out, blow dries my hair straight and then flat irons it. It usually takes about three hours. The treatment usually lasts in my hair about three months. Before getting to the salon, I was told to wash my hair at home and come with it dry. The treatment was left in my hair for 20 minutes, not blow-dried straight, just blow dried dry, then flat iron-ed straight. It took about 2 hours. Joseph let me keep the shampoo and conditioner the treatment came with, but in the middle of the treatment, asked if he could charge $50 more since my hair used so much of it. It's been a month, and my hair is almost back to as frizzy as usual. I'll attach a picture. I pretty happy with it for the month it lasted, but I could also tell right away that perhaps the treatment had not been left in as long as usual. read more

This was my first haircut here and I have a short bob haircut. I thought it looked fine when I first left but very different from the haircuts I have had for the past 2 years with this style (describing it in the same way, similar reference photos) it is just super uneven. This is the first time someone hasn't cut my hair short enough (it's short enough on the sides but it looks like she missed some pieces and there is a long patch in the back). For the price I expected a much better experience. She didn't even ask me where I part my hair before cutting. I am probably not the usual demographic that comes here so that might have been where the miscommunication stemmed from. read more

tl;dr: I feel awesome and get the nicest compliments after going to Salon Joseph. Highly recommend Emily. Emily has been cutting/coloring my hair for a little over a year and I can't recommend her highly enough. I've had a lot of weird haircuts in my time, and before Emily and Salon Joseph, going to the salon often felt like an expensive disappointment. I'd go because I had to, just to avoid a three-foot scraggly braid becoming my personal brand, but I'd leave wishing my hair would grow out of the new cut quickly. Emily is a highly-experienced perfectionist. She listens to what I'm envisioning and tells me when it's unrealistic. I usually come in spitballing ideas ("I want the color to be a little edgy, but mostly pretty!" "I want the cut to stay really long, but have lots of volume and movement!") and Emily suggests solutions that will actually look good on my head (a warm, dark brunette with cinnamon gloss that looks red in the sun; a long-layered cut that makes me feel light and fresh, but like I have more hair than before). This spitballing is probably a bad practice on my part, btw--bring pics and more concrete ideas if you have them. :) Random note: I have a weirdly sensitive scalp, so I'm glad Emily has a gentle touch. Also, she's a great person and chatting with her makes a 3-hour appointment go by quickly. As for the salon at large, it's a lovely environment. Parking is free and easy, the space is clean and bright, and everyone who works there is a skilled professional. You can tell they have a good team dynamic going on. read more

Maravilloso! Thanks to mel r's review, I was drawn to try this wonderful place. It's just one review besides mine, but the way her results were described by my fellow Yelper gave me great confidence in trying Salon Joseph. This is the first time I have my hair professionally colored in the U.S. Before, I used the little boxes for emergency cases, and usually waited to one of my quarterly visits to hometown Caracas to get highlights done (always got compliments). When highlights and I got a divorce after more than 10 years of being together, I thought I wasn't going to be in the need of coloring ever again. Wrong! I was as wrong as the woman who thinks the ex-husband-to-be won't take half the china set because "it's a girly thing to do!" Once you make your hair go through all the color pallets possible plus you compliment it with an extra layers of yellow stripes, well, the roots will haunt you. They will. Salon Joseph is a great looking place, simple and not pretentious. Everyone there is nice, even other customers. The morning I went (Wednesday) it was packed, but they definitely know how to manage that. It's a good idea to call ahead and make an appointment. Kesha was, by far, one of the best stylist I've ever had. Not only because she is a professional and extremely good at what she does, also because she's a nice and thoughtful lady that makes her customers feel at ease. We discussed colors and styles and she asked me if I was satisfied throughout the process. Needless to say, the color is absolutely gorgeous and my hair looks shiny and healthy. Since it was my first time there, the consultation portion took about 15-20 minutes. She also asked the right questions and consulted in her mentor for ideas on how to get my hair exactly how i explained it. I appreciated the time and care that was put into my session. David Hewitt is the man of your dreams. Okay, a bit dramatic, but when it comes to your hair, it's true. I'm from Chicago and am a client and huge fan of David's. You may be wondering why someone from Chicago is reviewing a salon and stylist in Seattle, but bear with me. David moved to Seattle from Chicago. In a previous review, I said I'd follow David to the ends of the earth. Well, I've gotten as far as Seattle. I visited him in December and had the works - color, highlights. and cut. I went to salon Joseph about two weeks ago which means it's been 14 days that I've had to wake up to this horrible horrible hair. I went in for a haircut and an ombré. I showed Lisa a picture of exactly what I wanted. She said it wouldn't be hard and started. She cut off at least 8inches which was ok until she ruined my hair with layers and gave me a hideous bob (that I specifically said I didn't not want). She did the ombré before she started the layers so most if it was cut off and it's like she didn't even do the ombré (but I sure did pay for it). The highlights that are left are not properly blended and have defined lines and starting points. My hair is now too short to be up in a ponytail so I'll be wearing the top layer of my hair in a woman bun for the next two months. Ugh. Not cool. Two stars for the salon because they gave me coffee and it's a nice place. read more

From the moment she introduced herself all the way up to walking me to the front and sending me home with an appropriate product.. Nothing but accuracy. Ashley is amazing!!! I have been though many a stylist in my day. When I moved up here from Denver I went through hell, literal hell, attempting to find a new stylist, I'm talking butchered hair at the hands of stylists who don't know how to effectively cut curly hair. I "auditioned" Ashley a little over a year ago to check out her skills. Not only did she pass but throughout our year together she has transformed my hair, it's longer, healthier, thicker, blonder (Ash doesn't do brassy, just gorgeous color) Oh and her blowouts?!?! Don't even get me started on her blowouts, they're AMAZING!!, they last forever and it's not like I'm easy on my hair (I'm a fitness instructor, so this hair gets abused, big time!) I get compliments on my hair all the time, I've sent dozens of women her way. So if you've read this review you kinda have to go see her now. Bonus, Ashley is really funny, kind and down to earth. So if she becomes your stylist be prepared to be part of the cool kids who walk around with amazing hair. Also, Jonathan is great!! As a Seattle transplant, this was my first hair experience in the city. I received a $20 off coupon in the mail, and since Salon Joseph had good reviews, I figured I would try it out. The coupon is only good for apprentices, not "sr. level" stylists, which was interesting. I figured they wouldn't put their reputation on a newbie stylist, so they must be decent. I booked my appointment for the next day with Cassandra. She was very nice, and she consulted with Joseph a couple of times to confirm the hair color and cut I wanted. The good: - Was able to get next day appointment - Very nice staff - Fantastic color process. My hair color is hard to get (IMO, anyway), and was a primary reason I kept going to the salon in AZ that I frequented. It matched about 95% of the color I go for. Just a bit brighter and it would have been 100%. I have red hair (extremely far from natural!), so this was a good rating for me. Also, my roots were at least an inch, and you cannot tell whatsoever that I went that long without a touchup- the transition from where my hideous roots were, to the ends, is seamless! - Cassandra was precise and took her time, and did a great job. The not so good: - I tried to walk in twice to book an appt or get a pricing consult, as the hours are until 7. Once at 6PM, once at 5PM the next day. Both times they were closed. I live down the street so I finally learned to just call. - Called during business hours once, no answer. Called again the day before my appointment, was asked in the quickest possible way to please hold, then was forgot about. I hung up after five minutes. This almost made me not go at all, but they are literally so close to my house, I wanted to give them a shot. - Rinsing chairs and the sink are not the most comfortable. Maybe it's because I'm tall (5' 10"), but usually this is the most relaxing part of the visit, and it was not. Overall, I'll be going back due to the hair customer experience. read more

Perfection. This sums up every experience I have had at this Salon. I have been coming here for two years and have always seen Monica (Potter). I am extremely picky about my hair and when moving to the area I was worried about finding someone who would match my blonde hair, help me continue to grow my hair, and strength my hair after years of flat irons, blow dryers, and color changes. Monica not only executes flawless technique but gives me exactly what I want. Which is hard to find in a hair expert. I always found myself telling a hairstylist what I wanted but in the end they always just did what they wanted (from cut to color.) THANK THE LORD, Monica was the breath of fresh air (for my hair). She is always learning about growing trends, new styling techniques, what's "in" but can also deliver the basics. (She is also the Keratin goddess-- she has managed to keep my hair smooth, straight and looking fabulous in the constant drizzle Seattle has to offer) Monica also works long hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays. This is perfect with my 9am-5pm working schedule. She comes in early and stays late to accommodate clients with full time jobs. I have never found a hairstylist who would meet me at 7am for a last minute trim or highlight. She is my hair god. read more

I'm new to Seattle, and was very stressed at the thought of finding someone new to entrust with my blonde hair. Luckily yelp didn't let me down when I was lead to Salon Joseph. I called the salon and the receptionist recommended David for a full highlight. He did a full consultation and asked lots of questions about what my previous stylist had used on my hair. He did an amazing job and was really fun to talk to (not necessary for a stylist, but always an added bonus!). It looks like my hair is naturally blonde, and the trim was great as well. Prices are what reasonable for a nice, centrally located salon with experienced professionals. A younger stylist appeared to be shadowing master stylist, possibly the owner, so it is apparent that the salon encourages continuing education. If you need a new salon, I'd recommend Salon Joseph. read more

Travis Hopkins is by far THE BEST!!! My fiance gets his hair cut by Travis, and each and every time, it turns out just AMAZING! Sharp, modern, sleek and trendy! I just love his cut and style so much, and on the recommendation of my fiance and a few friends, I had to go see Travis myself. I've visited Travis at Salon Joseph twice so far, and both times he's done just an AMAZING job with my hair!!! Note that I live way on the east side, and life there is super busy, so coming into the city is a bit of a trek for me. But to see Travis, it's soooooooo worth it!!! For my first visit, he gave me a very sophisticated and fresh cut and style, and I truly felt gorgeous walking out of the salon! For my second visit (just a week ago), my fiance and I thought something "a bit edgy" would be fun. Upon mentioning this, Travis responded with "what does edgy mean to you?" I thought this was a brilliant question, because "edgy" can mean so many different things to different people. Also, it meant that he really cared about me as a client, and completely respected my view point and individuality. I sincerely appreciated the time he took to really listen to and understand me! Travis ran with my rather vague idea of "edgy" and did his magic. I must say that he is a CREATIVE GENIUS! The resultant style and cut is seriously THE BEST I've ever had! Super modern and trendy - the perfect style, exactly what we were looking for and sooo much more! I was completely ecstatic, and my fiance was in "WOW!" mode! ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! I was in desperate need of a hair cut since i was super fed up with how horrible my hair was laying. I made an appointment at Salon Joseph after reading rave reviews and also the great location. Kesha was my stylist and was AWESOME! great relaxing shampoo too!!!she really took the time to listen to what I wanted and also made some helpful suggestions. She offered me tea and was easy to chat to. My hair has never layed this well after a quick wash/blow dry at home!!! Also i plan on coming back to get the complimentary bang trim :) the salon's atmosphere is nice and had a good variety of magazines to choose from. The decor is a bit dated but still nice and for the most part very clean. I never saw the rest room but the little coat closet is nice so you dont have to throw your stuff on the floor during your service. I wish there was a deal where you could get a free cut with any color service because that would pull me in as a much more regular costumer. BUT i totally plan on coming back to Kesha for my haircut again!!! read more

I'm really comfortable updating my previous review. Joseph suggested I come in and try a different stylist after my awful experience with Jennifer. I was really hesitant but am glad I gave the salon another go. I've seen Lisa a couple of times now and have been very happy with the results. I was scared at first when describing what I wanted because I definitely didn't get what I asked for the first couple of times at the salon. I usually come with pictures so there is no mistake but Lisa just got me. She understood what I wanted from my descriptions and didn't really even need to see my pictures. She made my experience very comfortable; fun conversation, great cut and color. There's not that much else to say other than Lisa is awesome, she understood really well what I wanted and made it happen. The color was where I wanted it and what I wanted. I had minimal brassiness which can be tricky with dark hair. My cut makes my hair sit well and easy to style. The lighting in the salon is not great (orange walls that throw warm) so we always take a walk after my service to take a look in the front entrance and outside. Previous Review: I had my hair cut and balayaged by Jennifer. I picked her because I read on the salon website that balayage was her specialty. I wanted a natural ombré look. What I got was a chunky and lumpy looking all over foil and the worst haircut I've ever had. Jennifer even noticed the blobs of random bleached color in my hair and said she would fix it, but she never did. The haircut I received made my hair unmanageable and unruly. All I wanted was a trim on my existing long layers, which should have been very simple. I went back to get the cut fixed because my hair just didn't sit well anymore. Jennifer thanked me for the feedback (which was sweet) and blended the ends to help it sit better. This made it worse. The blending made my hair look messy and in need of a haircut. It still did not sit well. I also asked for my hair to be curled after one of the times I went. She said she would if there was time. She said this while blow waving my hair straight. Then said we were out of time. Jennifer seems like a lovely person but her work was sub par and not what I asked for. I gave her two chances. I will not be going back. read more

Monica is so great. She saved my hair. I came in with a bad cut and bad color. My previous hair dresser said he couldn't change the color. She fixed it and the cut. I have curly hair, which some hair dressers have trouble with. She is super nice too! She also comes in early so I don't have to miss work. Monica also did my hair for my wedding. It was beautiful! I felt like a princess. She even came in on her day off for this. She did my mom and my sister's hair too. It looked beautiful, but not too crazy and big like some brides. I don't think you will be disappointed if you go to her. She has great ideas and keeps up on trends. She is very passionate about hair. Her prices are very reasonable too. Just as promised, when I got back to the states I rented a car and drove 3 hours just so David Hewitt could cut and color my hair again. He is the best! I always leave feeling amazing and have been getting many compliments on my color. He knows what he's doing and I won't go to anyone else. So this is an update to my previous review about Salon Joseph and specifically KaraLee. For this review my sister was in town and had a bad coloring at another salon (think auburn/dark red) when she was looking for a medium brown. KaraLee was amazing and we showed up late on a Wednesday and she said she was more than happy to help my sister to try and correct the color. She took over 2.5 hours to try and correct the color and was so amazing! She did everything she could and even explained to my sister the process and what steps she would take to make the correction. The color turned out great! A HUGE difference from before and something my sister was actually good with having in public, unlike before. I cannot give enough thanks to KaraLee for how great she is as a person and as a hair stylist. read more
