My hair was straight, fine, one length and below my shoulders. I requested classic indie girl bangs, and heavily stressed that chunky face framing pieces were necessary, since I wear my hair up a lot. Everyone knows what I'm talking about, the high bun and bangs look. After she was finished the stylist told me she decided I would look better with a U shaped bang with no face framing. What she called a "health trim" ended up being 4-5 inches off of my hair and a top layer that makes me look like I have a bowl on my head. What kills me is I told her I had recently lost my job and really needed a boost to help me through interviews. I am now wearing thick headbands every day to cover the bangs, and the layering looks terrible. I can't afford a wig and the six months I spent growing my hair out is lost. Have you ever felt so comfortable with your hair stylist that it's like hanging with a friend who happens to be super talented? That's what it's like whenever I go see Rose. I've seen her 3 times in the last 8 weeks. Normally I see her on a whim and then don't see her again for 2 years because the cuts she give all grow out really nicely and often I'm just too lazy to go back. Over the summer I decided I wanted a blonde balayage. I thought I loved it when I left but after looking at it in natural light, fluorescent light and the lights at home I decided I didn't love it. Contacted Rose who was more than happy to help achieve whatever I wanted. Fast forward 8 weeks and I was tired of being blonde because I thought it brought out too much of the redness in my face. Ta da! I'm brunette again and couldn't be happier. The salon itself is edgy but comfortable and so far, I've loved all the products used. Rose did some twisty curl stuff with my hair yesterday, I slept on it, brushed it out and it is still curly-ish. I have Asian hair so you can imagine I'm pretty impressed. To preface this review, this has been my salon of choice since I moved to Seattle in 2008, and I've seen several stylists over the years who are amazing, and have spent several thousand dollars here. I'm not sure what has happened to it recently, but they have far fewer stylists now and they don't seem to be the same level of high-quality creatives. This review isn't meant to reflect all of the stylists there, but my most recent visit was by far the worst salon experience I've had in my life. After getting a haircut that was not what I asked for from a different stylist (a no-shape bulky bob with crooked, too-long bangs) Lauraina did just a horrible job on my bleach and tone, extremely uneven all over and super brassy-orange in spots. It looked like when I tried to do my own bleach in high school. She was downright hostile towards me the entire visit after she was also 20 minutes late, there was a disagreement about the cost of the service and what I had been quoted on the phone. During my call, I detailed very specifically what I wanted and the condition of my current hair. I developed a plan with the scheduler and even sent several pics of my hair as it was during the convo. For the haircut I discussed cutting all of the pre-lightened, ultra-faded pink hair I had on my ends off and just bleaching the top part that remained, as a short bob. The stylist who cut my hair left a tiny amount of the colored hair on the ends. Since I also briefed her on the entire plan of my service, I assumed she left it there with the knowledge I was expecting to just bleach it all after the cut. They instead tried to do my bleach appointment as an entire color correction, for both the bleach-and-tone cost PLUS $75/hr. I asked to just cancel the appointment and leave as I felt Lauraina's hostile energy after I disagreed with the service contract they made, and couldn't afford the cost they were proposing (nearly $500) - but they instead offered to do the appointment as the originally discussed bleach-and-tone service. I wanted to leave still but felt bad that there was a disagreement and agreed to pay $50 more than I had been quoted since a tiny amount of colored hair was left on my ends against my wishes. Lauraina aggressively pushed my neck around in the washing bowl and had me move my head in several ultra-strained positions that seemed intentionally sadistic - so that I experienced neck pain for at least a week afterwards, pulled my hair and nearly stabbed me with her utensils, and even accused me of lying about not having pre-existing color on my roots, which was extremely rude. I did not feel safe during this visit and really wish I would have left earlier. She frequently rolled her eyes, made snide remarks and had a terrible attitude altogether; I don't think she should be in any sort of customer service role based on this totally unhinged display. She noticed but shrugged-off the unevenness of her job, again accusing me of lying about having virgin hair grown out with no color. She did not even apply the toner I paid for, either, and stormed out of the building dramatically when finished. The front desk person said nothing to me at payment and did not apologize for Lauraina's rude behavior, even after I apologized for whatever role I had in the miscommunication of service type/costs and was almost in tears at getting treated like that for a couple hours. It was honestly traumatizing after I had been unable to afford hair color for several months and was so excited to feel like myself again. I thought it would be so great to get a fresh start with my natural hair as the canvas and she just totally made me feel like garbage, and ruined my hair for months to come. I wore wigs for a year before this visit, so the accusation of the color on my clearly-natural hair made me really upset, too. I was so embarrassed about the wigs and wanted my real hair and the confidence it gave me back, but Lauraina ruined that for me. I would give her 0 stars if possible. Instead of taking my usual post-salon selfies, I wondered what I could do to fix this egregiously uneven bleach, and decided it was best to not create more damage or pay even more at a different salon, and just applied the pink color over it at home as intended - hoping it would be saturated enough to not take unevenly on the base. And I still ended up paying $270 just for the bleach only. Looking at their site now, it says + Single process color: $120 and up and + Double process color: $150 and up. Since she was a junior stylist and clearly just out of school, I don't even know how I was asked to pay over $200 for this service, and there was no toner even applied so that doesn't even sound like a double-process service... I feel betrayed by this experience at my former favorite salon and sadly won't be returning ever again. read more

I've been a customer for nearly 4 years and I will NOT be going back. I get a foil every 8 weeks and 22 inch extensions 2-3 times per year While I've been generally happy with my hair, the last 2 times I went in, I was treated so poorly and left with subpar hair--after paying $1200 plus tip My stylist requires up front payment for the hair and while that is understandable, I should not need to make multiple calls, in person visits (once I waited 30+ minutes before I gave up and had to come in a second time), emails, and texts to accomplish this. That is ridiculous This last time Kelly requested I come in 2 hours before my scheduled time. I was coming from overseas and had to rent a hotel room to accommodate her schedule--she was over 90 minutes late, I was there all day with no food, the salon was FREEZING, my clothes got soaked, I was billed for a full foil I didn't get (see picture), she completely disregarded the photos I gave for color reference, and left me with orange roots and lowlights (I'm a cool ash blonde) No discount, just a pile of samples. I left cold, hungry, unsatisfied and had to have her work corrected elsewhere She has consistently been late to appointments and I tolerated it because I liked the results. However, while her work with extensions is generally excellent, her failure to trim my natural hair (I had to forcefully demand it this last time) contributed to serious damage to my hair and her color results are inconsistent For what I pay and I tip 20%, I deserve better read more

She is incredible with hair, and I've never ever had a bad haircut from her. She's always able to translate what I want exactly into a great haircut, making me feel incredibly confident. She's always also very attentive, friendly, professional, punctual, ALL the things you want in a great hairdresser. Came in yesterday for a bayalge, shadow root, and trim. I was quoted $405 (ended up paying $485 including tip and parking) for what I wanted done, and I said, sure, let's splurge and get something really nice. It is not at all what I asked for. The cut is crooked and choppy. The color, while it looks fine, isn't what I asked for. I will only be returning to get the cut fixed. For $460, I expected it to be perfect and exactly what I wanted. Edit: I got my hair cut fixed a few days ago. It's even now, but after all was said and done, I lost about 4 inches, when I only asked for an inch trim. I pretty sad about all the hair I lost since I've been trying to grow my hair out from a pixie for 2 years. A manager Melissa called me on Saturday to follow up with me. She was very kind and understanding of the situation and has offered to refund me the haircut and give me a credit for a color fix as well as an additional credit for another service. I'm really happy she did that, but I'm going to leave my review as it is. I really can't believe there are no reviews on here for Shaina yet! I went into Vain for the first time yesterday and she did an incredible job giving me the color fade i wanted. I was super nervous because i haven't dyed my hair in years but she gave me exactly what i asked for and made me feel comfortable in the process. I was very adamant about not wanting to have my roots bleached and needing to come in for touchups every few weeks and she skillfully made that happen while still giving me maximum drama. She clearly really understands hair and is always paying attention. Not only that, but she's a rad lady and super easy to talk to- and i hate forced conversation and definitely don't click with all stylists. My 4 hour appointment flew by and i never felt the least bit uncomfortable. All-in-all i had a stellar first experience at Vain and it was mostly because of Shaina. read more

This small, quirky salon is in a historic building on first avenue. Upon arrival, they offer you tea or coffee and also have a small gift / product shop. They also offer shirtsleeve and long sleeve coverups/sweatshirts so you can protect your clothing during dye jobs. VAIN is not the best salon I've been to, nor the worst. It's neither the most expensive, nor the least. What is is known for, is its ability to create edgy cuts and colors (and yes, dreadlocks on white folks... hmm (insert emoji here)). Been coming here for maybe 5 months (going from black to blonde) due to the convenience of the location. I suspected that asking my usual stylist to take me to blonde would have made her cry since she usually chooses more tasteful cuts and colors and I was looking for something drastic. My experience with this place was generally okay, although 1. it is possible to get cold (despite the sweatshirt) during extra long appointments with a wet head and there not being a heater in the space. 2. There's a patch of hair on the back of my head that's currently burnt up due to the first stylist I had here going hard on the bleach... it will grow out, so NBD, but worth mentioning 3. I did have a stylist here create some banding in my hair when dyeing my roots due to her having period cramps (and telling me so... perhaps tmi?) and clearly wanting to get me and herself out of there... Despite this, I gave another VAIN stylist a chance and had her somewhat fix the weird reverse-ombre effect it created. I mean, I don't really care because it's just hair and you can always cut it off/it will grow back, but still, my luscious locks!! D: lol During the course of the past 5 months, 2 of the 3 stylists I had appointments with have left. Vain does a good job of informing you immediately that your stylist is leaving/has left, being transparent about where the stylists went (often to a competing salon), and letting you either cancel any existing appointments or reschedule with another stylist... however the turnover is a slight inconvenience due to the fact you were likely building a maintenance or escalation plan for your hair and also rapport with that stylist. In conclusion, I may go back to paying more at Antonio or Bocz... they are better at retaining their stylists and are more meticulous even though the appointments can take longer. To preface this review, I came in for a re-do after an original trim that wasn't quite right (but it was fixable), and I saw a different stylist than the original one. This was also my first time at VAIN, and neither stylist had worked with my hair before (long bob, very thick, wavy) as this was my first time at this salon. I should also add that I was refunded for the haircut, although after two cuts and tips for each, parking in Belltown, and the time for two cuts, it was a drop in the bucket. The second cut, by a very experienced stylist nonetheless (Kelly), was a COMPLETE disaster. Instead of a re-do, I left the salon with my nightmare hair: up to my ears, a complete poofball, and nearly in tears. This was four months ago. It's going to take at LEAST 4-6 months more to get my hair back to its original state. Definitely the worst haircut I have ever, ever had. I asked for a gradual, soft ombré, but what I ended up with was blotchy bleached ends, with most of my hair still left black! Ever since my hairstylist left Se7en back in April, I haven't had a haircut, let alone a trim. I guess you can say I was feeling pretty sad that my lady of 4 years wasn't around to fix my hair. Six months later, I was waaaaay overdue for a trim. After asking around and doing research on my own, I decided to see Giulia thanks to Kate S. From what I gathered from Vain's website and Kate's review, she had what I was looking for: a stylist that focuses on flattering not only facial features but is willing to experiment with different styles. When I finally had my appointment with Giulia, I immediately like how relaxed she was so I definitely felt comfortable around her. Since I'm in the process of growing out my hair, I asked her to cut off all my split ends and add blunt bangs. After I told her what I was looking for, she gave me a few suggestions: rounding out the edges of my bangs, adding a few layers here and there, etc. So I decided to go along with it and see what the end result will look like. How did it turn out? I LOVED IT!!! Not only did she meet my expectations, she was able to make it look better than what I pictured it in my head. I also like how they offer complimentary bang trims, which I'll be back for in a few weeks. For now, I'm leaving this as a 4 start review since this was my first haircut with Giulia. Vain exceeded all my expectations and remarkably earned its seat, interrupting my 5-yr. monogamy with my salon, Charles Ifergan in Chicago, which I maintained even while living in NYC last summer. Disclaimer: I am fairly demanding when it comes to both concept and execution - rating creativity (have not had a single haircut repeated once over the past 5 yrs.) and technique equally. As prior reviewers mention, William is an artist, as passionate as he is gifted at his craft. He specializes in blow-outs and short/textured cuts, takes sufficient artistic license while maintaining a keen ability to listen (vital given your head is in his hands). Strong sense of personality, which guides his POV - you walk out as one of his creations, not someone else's replica. The cut I received was a moderate pixie, asymmetrical, slightly graduated towards the front. Face-framing, baby bangs completing the asymmetrical arch, neither mod/heavy nor simply a slanted bang. Lightly texturized, avoiding an overly texturized/blended look. Vain has a fantastic vibe - staff is unpretentious and clearly passionate about their work. The salon frequently hosts art gallery launch parties, and houses art studios on the 2nd floor. Cute accessories boutique in the front of the salon, fun to browse great finds. For a salon there is a lack of "hair-style" magazines; a huge case of magazines but only 1 specifically for hairstyles, an all girls magazine (but that works for me in this case). Tell Megyn that I really didn't have anything specific to show her but would like to follow a few different ideas/styles I had and combine it into 1. Shampoo, blow dry, razor, thin, razor, razor, razor, snip, thin, razor, snip and done. I like the cut. I like Megyn. I am confident in her ability to take suggestions and have her way with it. I almost hate to make a review since I don't want my stylist to be booked up but credit needs to be given where credit is deserved. I had a previous stylist here that was so-so where they would kind of talk to me in a condescending way or make up excuses when I pointed out some of their mistakes. The result of my hair was never consistent. I didn't want to just give up on this place since it has really good pricing so I gave it another shot with another stylist. The receptionist recommended me Megyn and oh my goodness, she was a godsend. Megyn not only did what I asked for but she went above and beyond to make sure that I was satisfied and was happy with my end result. I told her (and she saw herself) the mistakes the other stylist made and helped fixed it. Sometimes when I'm happy with the result and she's not - she will make it even better because she has such high standards for her end result which is awesome for the client. When I first came to Megyn almost a year ago, I had a really bad balayage that was very orangey (I have really dark Asian hair). I told her I wanted to go all blonde and she made it happen! Of course it didn't happen in one session but I was very happy with how it looked anyways. After 2 more sessions my hair was very icy. She's amazing at what she does and she keeps my hair as healthy as it can be. There has been little breakage from me being blonde. Also, she has done some fun colors where my hair is temporarily blue or lavender which I love love love. It lasts for probably 2 weeks and it fades to a beautiful gray and then a very ashy blonde. So I walked into my appointment at VAIN with Jamie with possibly the most vague hair request ever: "I like bright colors. My hair is kinda long. I was kind of afraid of color, so it's been hidden, so I think I want to go a little bigger?" She asked just the right questions, and 3.5 hours later, I had THE COOLEST HAIR I HAVE EVER HAD. It looks like my hair is made out of fire, and somehow my bulky, heavy, thick hair looks light and natural and layered and amazing. Cinna would be jealous of Jamie's skills. I have to start by saying it takes a LOT for me to actually spend the time to write a review on Yelp, so you must know I am hella happy with Vain. I moved to Seattle two years ago and was (of course) nervous about who would be the new lover of my locks. After extensive research, I decided to go to Vain. Since day one, I have not been disappointed. Alexis is my go-to stylist, but when she is booked or has the day off, I have also had the luxury of seeing Valentine and Sarah B. I cannot say enough about the staff of Vain. From the receptionists to the assistants, they provide the utmost professional, yet fun service. I would say they provide the best in customer service, but after going there for the past two years, I no longer feel like a client. They completely make you feel like family. The stylists NEVER rush or make you feel rushed. Often times, they have stayed late to make my coif perfect, and they all take the time to really listen to what you want, and to make sure they achieve perfect results and that you leave there super happy. However, the best part, is that I feel completely comfortable telling them generically what I am looking for and trusting them to go ahead and do what they think will look good on me. I have never been disappointed. Belinda, their in-house waxing maven and make-up goddess is a treasure. If she ever decided to pack up and move away, I may just have to stage a mass protest. She delivers painless waxes, is a pro at shaping brows, and genuinely cares about her clients' well-being. Why did it take me so long to review this Beauty-House-of-the-Holy? Well like I said, I am a busy lady and I don't Yelp often. But this past weekend, the stylists managed to squeeze my friend and I in for hair and make-up for Lady Gaga. Again, I went in with a general idea and some feathers, but was still a little unsure which way I wanted to go. Sarah B. gave me a delicious do. My long wavy hair was pinned up into a luscious faux-bob, big and wavy as Gaga would approve of. She applied the feathers in such a way that they added texture, but actually flowed seamlessly in to my hair. I requested excessive spray and bobby pins, as I knew it would need to last at least 12 hours. Needless to say, it certainly did. Belinda actually researched Gaga's make-up history the night before and knew exactly how she was going to do up my face. Words cannot describe the look. I was completely transformed in to a Gaga goddess. The night would not have been the same without starting out at Vain. Love, love, love this place and highly recommend it. read more

For now I think I'll leave this at a 4 or 4.5. I'm definitely coming back in a few weeks or a month to get my hair lighter. I made an appointment a week in advance and they made a spot for me right away with Lydia. I came in on time, but waited about half an hour to be called back. I wasn't too bothered by that, but I saw another woman who was there before I arrived, and she was still sitting there even after I got called back! The poor girl! Lydia was easy going and talked me through color options. Usually at other salons, they ask about you the whole time but I think I learned more about her than she did about me LOL. I'm not complaining though, because it was hard to hold a conversation there. The place was loud!! I have a soft voice so half the time I'd say something, she'd ask me to repeat hahaha. Oh well. During consultations, she let me know that what I wanted to do was not feasible in one session, but we can work towards that in the long run. She still made sure my hair was nice and cool (not warm) and lifted it as much as she could without damaging it! She toned it to give me an ashy/beigey cool color. The back of my head isn't as lifted as the front but I'm not too bothered by it; I have a lot of hair so I understand the issue with timing chemicals accurately, but it would have been better if it was all even. I still really like the outcome even though it wasn't the exact color I initially wanted. I'm definitely coming back to Lydia to go lighter and actually make my hair goals and I'm glad we got a great lift for my first session; it makes the process more enjoyable. In the meantime I definitely love my hair now. She's a great person to go to if you want a change in color. Definitely pricey (well... I also have a lot of hair..), but it's worth her hard work and beautiful outcome. Also... This place is right across the street from pike place!! read more

I booked an appointment with Danielle after seeing other reviews about her and after looking at her profile on the website, I thought she would be a great person to do my hair! I came in not sure what I wanted, I wanted something dramatic, yet natural (I started off as a dark copper brown), blonde but not too blonde... Something that would be suitable and low maintenance so that I could grow out my hair without making my roots look weird as it grow out. I am totally in love with my hair!! I was so scared to dye my Asian hair ombré, but it turned out wonderful and I love the dimensions and natural gradient she gave me! perfect for the summer months and a great change (: I totally recommend her - she REALLY knows what she's doing!! read more

This is definitely my favorite salon in town. I recently relocated to Belltown and was looking for a cosmetologist in the area. I knew I wanted a layered bob haircut. On a whim, I was booked with Dylan, who happens to specialize in bob cuts and curls. They provided me excellent customer service. Dylan was really nice and gave me a thorough consult about what type of bob cut, etc. that I wanted to have. She took her time and gave me a phenomenal layered bob cut look that I LOVE! I would DEFINITELY recommend Vain and specifically Dylan for your hair needs. Great place, cool people, excellent cuts! read more

I came to Vain because I needed to get my very faded purple fixed. The salon felt very trendy but I never felt out of place or uncomfortable. When I called they asked questions about my hair and what I wanted and they matched me with JC. JC did an absolutely incredible job!! He really listened to what I didn't like about my current hair and what I wanted to achieve. He did an excellent job and was a pleasure to talk to. We were able to darken my hair and really blend it into my roots. I am really pleased at how my hair turned out and would return to him again. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was the receptionist. My sister was with me for the appointment and when the appointment was starting to run long I told my sis to take my wallet and go pay for me so as soon as we were finished everyone could go home. JC never made me feel rushed but the receptionist definetly did. When my sister went to pay, the receptionist was rude, asked how much longer we were going to be and was texting while talking to her. When my sister told her the percentage of tip to give the receptionist responded very rudely that she had no idea 'what the fuck amount that was.' She was very obviously upset at having to stay longer and it kinda put a damper on the last 20 minutes of the appointment. However, I would still return to Vain to see JC. read more

I really wish I could give this salon five stars. I had a really great experience for going there my first time. My girlfriend, on the other hand, had an awful one. She was booked for a simple cut and style and Rebekah and arrived an hour early for her appointment so she could keep me company during mine. She checked in twice with the receptionist, who even went up to Rebekah and pointed my girlfriend out so she would know who her client was. Yet at my girlfriends appointment time, Rebekah blatantly ignored my girlfriend, and happened to take another stylists client who had the same name. My girlfriend was then left to wait for another 30 minutes before another stylist came to take her. I hate to be upset since the stylist was the sweetest girl, but she completely ignored what my girlfriend wanted to do with her hair, barely trimmed anything off her ends and then washed and styled it. She paid for basically a blowout. Not only did the wrong stylist do her hair, but when we found out the mix up, the salon didn't do anything to rectify the situation, didn't apologize for the mishap, and Rebekah didn't even seem to care that she completely ignored her client and took someone else. As someone who used to work at a salon, I would have expected better customer service, especially for first time clients. Now my girlfriend gets to find a new salon and pay for a whole new cut because the stylist at vain literally didn't even cut her hair. read more
