I'm in town for business and one of my colleagues was raving about the cannolis here. I tried the Dubai chocolate cannoli and the tiramisu. The cannoli was devine! So flaky and flavorful. I came at night so thankfully there was no line. It was also after tourist season it was in September so thankfully not too many crowds very friendly service. They move fast so make sure while you're standing in line even if it's a short line you figure out what you want to get the lines moving and get everybody in. I remember coming here as a kid some 20ish years ago and thinking wow this place is great. In fact at the time I definitely thought it was in my top five in the us. I would tell all my friends and classmates oh you're going to Boston you have to try Mike's it's iconic. While it may be wedded in history and folklore the cannoli with pistachio was good, creamy and nutty but nothing to pay $7 for. The Dubai chocolate donut was pretty average and really didn't have much of a nutty undertone. This place no longer lives up to my childhood fantasy. The last time I was here was over a decade ago. People were packed into the store like sardines and when I got to the front of the line, I was met by a cranky lady that asked me what I wanted. I asked if she had any recommendations and she gave me a displeased look and said "everything is good." Wow have things changed. There are still quite a few people jammed into the store, but it does seem a bit more organized. The cranky ladies have been replaced with pleasant and friendly staff. We got a pistachio cannoli and a peanut butter cannoli. Both were great, but I have to give it up to the peanut butter one. The bottom was coated in chocolate, so it tasted like a ricotta relative to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Bring your cash as they're cash only. Cannolis are $7 a piece. However, I do despise people who rudely cut ahead of me when the line subdivides into separate queues. A South Asian family of five did just that, and my only pleasure was derived when a couple of North End bros snapped at them. Regardless, waiting a half-hour gave me time to peruse Google. I thought it would save time to identify what were deemed the best of Mike's cannolis. However, the veteran server at the counter didn't appear to be in a hurry as she chatted freely with the neighborhood regulars in front of us. Of course, she sped up the moment I approached the counter, and her warmth suddenly left the building. She bundled our order and off we went. Now the best part of the experience. We found a playground hidden in an alleyway called Cutillo Park. There was a vacant picnic table where we enjoyed our purchases. I tried the Boston Cream Pie and multiple cannolis, and both lived up to the hype. The Boston Cream Pie was delicious, though I would have preferred a rich chocolate ganache instead of frosting. Had to try Mike's pastry after trying the other popular pastry shop in Hanover. Cannolis at Mike's is slightly more expensive and there are no custom choices (as fast as I know) but there are a lot more choices to choose from so that makes up for it. Ordered the Cannolis with pistachio filling and mint chips. It was so good, finished it before taking a picture. Cannoli at Mike is heavier, literally, than the other one. Crunchy shell. No wonder they are so popular. Perfect way to end a meal. There is no official line. There are multiple lines going at the same time. No tables to sit and eat. All takeout unless you want to stand on the corners and eat . Will definitely try their other flavors when I come back. My wife told me that I had to try Mike's Pastry on our recent trip through the Boston area. As a proud partisan of Philly's Italian scene, I went in fully prepared to declare that Mike's just couldn't measure up. I almost hoped it wouldn't. But it did. Their zeppoles are as good as you'll find anywhere, and while yellow cream zeppoles are at least decent wherever you get them, they really hit it out of the park with their ricotta zeppoles, which are great when made right but are often made wrong. Their ricotta filling is the perfect sweetness and delightfully light. I enjoyed the service. It's brisk, to the point, and not laden with showy niceties (probably because it was busy even on a Monday afternoon), but nice and very thoughtful in execution on the practical details. Nut allergy warning: Seriously consider not eating here or bringing severe allergy medicine to this or any of the other cannolis locations. There was already a pretty hefty 40+ person / ~20 minute wait around 8PM on a Saturday. We got a chocolate chip cannoli, to compare with other bakeries. It was the most expensive of the big three ($7 cash). Overall, we agreed that Mike's had the richest ricotta filling (very sweet, dense, and flavorful, spilling out the sides) but the worst shell (kind of soggy and not as flaky). Mike's ricotta pie used to be amazing. Not anymore. The recipe has completely changed, for the worse! It tastes mostly of egg and vanilla, almost like crème anglais. Ricotta is barely detectable. The crust is also different, much thinner and baked way too dark! A whole pie cost $17 ten years ago. And now it costs $41?! We would go to Modern Pastry across the street for our desserts but as a kid, I couldn't help but wonder, hmm Mike's Pastry is always so packed, line outside the door, all the time!
