After high pressure sales to purchase a warranty, when it can time to exercise it, this store failed to honor their own policies. I was still in the return period, and the free warranty period and I have a purchased warranty. Staff is knowlegable and friendly up until the point of sale, but if you ever expect to have to return an item do not buy here and definitely don't buy any warranty's as they are worthless.... read more

WOW! I went during the Black Friday madhouse. They managed it very well. They had a LOT of staff on hand and I asked for various products and they'd take me over there and show me. The staff was quite knowledgeable and showed me the best deals/sales, so I didn't overspend. I walked out with 2 wireless mice, an $299 laptop, and a 50 pack of dvd-rs ($5). WOW! Who can beat that at a store anyway? You'd have to order it online and then pay shipping and risk the return issue. The checkout line was pretty long, but it moved quite fast. They really planned well and I was highly impressed. I just LOVE Microcenter. It's a shame that most of these types of stores are out of business these days. I think they are the only national chain that really carries everything you need. read more

This was the worse experience ever!!!! Please read to the end!!! True statement to make a error is human but to really fowl things up takes a computer...not in this case... Tax free weekend was approaching and I figured I would go into micro center for info, I was going to the professionals I was set. I ended up with a sales professional James R. I told James what I needed and he recommended Dell desktop Dell monitors and a stand that day I also brought another desk top and monitor for my father he printed everything out and gave me an awesome idea to avoid the rush on Saturday and suggested I do ever thing on line. I was grateful and I was ready, I had my info. I did my order online Thursday from all the paperwork James gave me Wednesday. I was at the store at 9AM Saturday excited about my purchase. We was in line getting ready to pay and asked the customer service person where I picked up my items do I need anything extra. He said no you're fine everything is in the box. Well later on that day I started to set up my office then discovered I have no cables to connect my dual monitors. Well I went back to Micro Center on Sunday I tried to find James but I think James knew he was only in for it for the sale and avoided me so I went to another gentleman I told him James helped me on Wednesday he said ok and he printed everything out and said you need these cables go over there I ask over where because he only pointed. He then called another professional in the dept he was pointing to and he met me. This professional pulled up my info on his computer and looked over it and gave me the exact same cables that I already had for a single monitor. I was frustrated needless to say but kept calm so I politely said I will go into your technical department for help. I went into the technology department only for the professional that is supposed to also be the go to person when your computer breaks only to hear him tell me I have no idea what you need. He went to the top the real professional the supervisor of the technical department to help me. The Supervisor walked me over and he found the cable and he said you're going to need this cable you see this here as he was showing me on his computer, this is your computer he pulled up the specs so I said OK he said that this "should" work. I was unsure when he said this "should" work so I said do you want to see the desktop I brought just to make sure, he said no it's all in the system you need these cables he even drew me a picture on how I should connect them. Then I said because my old computer came with everything built in I am going to need a camera and speakers that also was not something that James R suggested I should buy, so I walked out of there paying an extra hundred dollars and some change more, it's fine I am all set now. I got home around 6:30 I decided to put my computer together. Here we go again, nothing worked the cables did not work I still cannot set up my system I had to go back to Old Faithful my old computer. The next day I packed up this happy little computer went to Micro Center and told them make this work or give me my money back and I am not paying one more cent. I was still calm but furious. The same professional technical supervisor stood his ground to make it look like it was my fault I was the idiot that can't hook up a computer. This is the killer, remember I said do you want to see the computer I brought and the professional said no the specs are in the computer well only to find out that everything that they suggested that I buy was wrong because the specs that showed on their computer was wrong and not what my computer actually had in the back so there so no room for extra cables. They literally had to take my computer in the back make sure that I have all the "correct" cables so I can hook up all my monitors and everything else was working before I left. When I got home and set up the computer it finally worked. Micro Center use to be a group of professionals that use to care about their customers and have pride in their profession, not any more it's all about sales and in these times we need good customer service and we don't have to demand it by bringing in your computer because the professionals are no longer available. Do better Micro Center!!! read more

Great convenience, often offering Newegg or Amazon-level prices (and no waiting!) Keep an eye on the refurbished/OEM merch, scored some great stuff like cheap hard drives and RAM. Store is a little disorganized and crazy, hence -1 star. read more

So I want to talk about MicroCenter's shredder selection. I carved out a bit of time to pay M.C. a little visit, in the hope of scoring a powerful yet inexpensive shredding machine. After wandering through an aisle that was incorrectly labeled "shredders" when in fact only print cartridges where strewn throughout, I alighted upon my options. They were sub-par at best. After a display of brief dismay, I saw a nice specimen on the clearance rack, marked down $20 for being returned. Beautiful lines, good gas mileage, the whole shebang. I asked their "helpful" "staff" why it was returned, and if it actually worked. They assured me that it did, so off to the checkout counter I went. All of the lines seemed to be moving slowly, and I was just not in the mood. Of course when I got up to the man, he had to call his supervisor over to override the clearance charge, thereby causing the two burly men behind me to develop aneurysms. Brought home. Plugged in. Didn't work. I thought, "maybe I have it plugged into the wrong socket? perhaps if I move it somewhere else? maybe there is something wrong with me that it is not working?" But finally I realized that there is nothing wrong with me. Whats wrong is MicroCenter. So wrong. read more

Gave them a second chance this week, had to buy a computer. I ordered on line the night before and got a call the next morning that they actually did not have the computer they advertised online. They were able to connect me to a sales person and he got me something similar for $10 more. When i picked up the computer the manager thanked me for buying there, so it seems like they are trying. Unfortunately, the reason that I needed a new computer was because the one I bought there last year died, i believe due to a bad MB. read more

While I can't attest to Micro Center as a whole, this review is solely for Tony at the repair section. I came in after having had spilled coffee all over my MacBook Pro (awful, I know). After having been quoted approximately $900 from Apple, I decided to try Micro Center and ended up paying a total of $250. Tony was extremely courteous and when he gave me the price of the part he would need, he apparently misquoted. Instead of charging me more for the price, he reduced the service fee so that it would match the initial price he gave me which--although expected--is rare these days. He seems to be one of the only technicians doing repairs and he was swamped the day I came in but he was always more than welcoming and the work was done about a week before expected! Definitely recommend Micro Center and Tony if your computer needs repairs! read more

I am going to loose my mind I noticed on the under side my two long screws that are supposed to sit under the vent were not in my machine Okay weird. So I popped it off... which took more effort than it should have and what do you know. The amount of damage on the internals of my computer was through the roof. So that being said... if you are a woman DO NOT GO TO MICRO CENTER. They took me for some bimbo and created more problems thinking I wouldn't notice. I shouldn't open my computer to find a dent in my WLan Card, Dents on the inside housing, dents and what almost looks like a pen marks that could have ripped the housing of my battery causing even more problems had it ripped while in their care. Inside support screws MISSING, and a broken tab they taped back on hoping I wouldn't notice. The only reason I went to them was because I didn't have time to fix the computer myself while I was moving. Goes to show I'll keep to fixing my own computer because I'm not going to charge myself to further break my computer then refuse to fix the extra problems caused unless I charge myself an absurd amount of money. Never come here for repairs they jerk you around on your prices and don't inform you of diagnostic fees so you get slammed with $40+ in fees on top of your quote. I went in for a physical error and they ran software diagnostics I knew I didn't need and didn't even ask me if I wanted that done or not. They just did it without asking. Unlike some I can pin point the issues wrong with my computer I don't need some guy telling me I'm wrong then looking into it and telling me the exact thing I said. I'm paying you to fix What I tell you to fix, not what you think or want to fix. Shove off. read more

Micro Center is a big beige building, with dark beige signage, filled with beige computer supplies, standard black electronics "wearables" and peripherals (in beige, black AND gray!) I always find what I need, assuming I've planned ahead using their website. You have to know exactly what you're looking for in order to avoid a second trip. Finding things in the store can be challenging due to the end-of-isle sale specials. Yes, as if finding the section containing a dual link DVI cable isn't hard enough, you have to ask an employee to locate sale items, which are not with the full-priced items. Way to push product! But that's okay because there is a plethora of staff there to help you. An insane amount of clocked-in staff, actually. Standing around waiting to help... Or not. This Office Space-esque environment is punctuated by the employees. Never have I seen so many employees standing around. If you ask where you can find something, they point. You have to run to the next sales person in that general "point" direction and wait for another point. I felt like I was hunting for my downed quail using only my trusted dog pack for guidance. Standing in line to make my exchange (second trip, after all) I had plenty of time to take photographs of staff standing around, kicking dust, or chatting in the very male "TakingToMyFriendButCheckingOutTheLadies" no eye contact required open line formation. (Oh come on. You know what I'm taking about. The Ladies socialize in circles while Young Men stand in lines.) Anyhow. I was dumbfounded, but entertained myself with a silent-mode photo shoot to back my review and a quick game of solitaire. Yet as I stood with my nose pressed to the very-delayed automatic glass door, I knew I'd be back. After all, where else can a girl go to replace a random wire, component or widget? read more

I'm not crazy about this place. It doesn't open until ten AM. Which is really frustrating if you try to get errands done early in the day. I have always found what I need here, the people are nice enough, the stuff is well organized. There is hardly any lines to check out. They keep your information for returns, which is nice. So you don't have to remember your receipt for returns. I have never returned anything so I'm not sure how this actually plays out, but I like it, in theory. read more

We must have accidentally signed up for the mailing list during one of our visits to Cambridge. Because every so often, we get home, check the mail, and there's a flier from Micro Center. To which my boyfriend remarks "Wow, look at all the good deals. I wish they had this near us." EVERY SINGLE TIME. Without exception. They have great deals, and it's telling that we come here every time we're in Mass. Granted, my boyfriend is a nerd/dork (I forget which one is cooler these days?) and he knows what he's looking for. We've brought back CDs, DVDs, SD Cards, etc. If we had a car, we probably would have brought home a trunk full of merchandise. The one purchase we probably could have done without was a stupid little desk fridge thing for his soda can. Damn the boy for his impulse buys. I told my friend I was looking for a good way to buy a cheap computer, and he swore that getting a refurbished one from Micro Center was the way to go. What a crazy store. Went there on a weekend and it was a total madhouse, though the staff seemed genuinely interested in helping people find what they were looking for. If you want to buy a refurbished computer, and you want to see it in person before you do it, check out Micro Center. That said, after checking out some of the models and talking to the staff, I just couldn't bring myself to buy a computer that I wasn't sure I could trust. In terms of atmosphere, the store looks like a warehouse, but I guess that's kind of the point. Also my friend's computer doesn't work very well, but neither does the new one that I bought from Dell. So look, Micro Center, we'll call it even. read more

Ok, I've been coming here since they opened - used to live down the block. (I know, I say that a lot - but I move around a lot, what can I do?) This place has always been a stalwart for me -- I started a tech company several years ago, and for the first year this place became my primary location for ordering hardware - I think I made Serge very happy - and I usually check them out before buying hardware anywhere else. Good supplies (laptop bags, printer paper, etc), good software collection, they carry both PCs and Macs, so you can compare, etc. They do, however, get demerits for the system of commission that they enacted a few years ago - it makes the younger sales associates a little nutsy. There are some folks there (not you Serge) who will come running up to you if they see you browsing, and then picking up a product. They will quickly ask "Is anyone helping you?" and when you say "No," they slap one of those damn little stickers with their name on it onto the product. Its annoying. ...oh, and the checkout people. It looks like someone has put a gun to their head to make them work there. Anyway, good products - everything is well maintained, and as long as you stay with the older (sorry, "seasoned") sales associates, you'll be fine. read more

Having been told about this place from a friend. I went online just to check what deals they have. I placed an order on 2 things one of them was unavailable, which I ended up getting a phone call from a gentlemen to tell me that. But the other item was ok and available at the store for pick up. They have an 18 min pick up time which is to give them time to prepare your order. So you can reserve anything online and pick up in store, but only downside is that there is only one store and that's located in Boston. The place is a computer geniuses haven, they have everything that you need to customize any computer. I didn't get a chance to look around but definitely worth taking a look. TLDR; As many of the 'Tips' people suggest, go knowing what you generally want to buy and do at least a modicum of superficial research on the products your eyeing. And be mindful of salespeople-customer interactions Long Version: 60% of the time I've gone, sales person was knowledgeable about what I was looking for and offered recommendations for products. For example, I needed a PSU after I fried one, associate asked me what I needed, what I was running, and my budget. Another time I was looking for storage solutions, similar pleasant experience. The other 40% (20% neutral and 20% this-could've-been-better-but was-not-terrible-overall) The most recent time I went looking for an exact item. I asked the group of sales persons about it and they pointed me to the aisle and I explained that I was already there but the products were not clearly marked on their packaging (Manufacturing Issue NOT MicroCenter) one guy literally rolled his eyes and offered to "help"... he was neither busy with other customers nor doing anything; however what they were doing was talking shop about the new Ryzen gpu rumors. When helping I explained that I needed a 1.5mm piece and that I tried to make it work with a 2mm part but it failed and his assistance was "well we don't have that but buy two of these 1.75mm and work with that or three of these 0.5mm parts and stack them". I thanked him, he went back to the gaggle of guys talking about ryzen and as much as I wanted to support a brick and mortar location I ordered the exact item I needed online and left. Now, what I would've liked would have been a little understanding of my situation and perhaps him offering some solutions to me like "you can look on our website" or "maybe we can see if I can order that part" or "let me check if I can find out more". Also might note that someone else was looking for a component while I was there and a different member of the group did the same thing, sigh and be terse, so apparently me and this other guy were inconveniencing them asking for assistance. I'll just chalk that up to a one-off and that it must've been because it was a hot and humid Friday. Overall, apart from that most recent experience this location has a relatively good stock of items and overall quality knowledgeable staff. read more

I have never brought my apple products to a store outside of Apple itself. I was hesitant to book an appointment at Micro-Center because I had never been; but reluctantly did so because my laptop was oh so broken. Yonas in the repair shop immediately calmed my nerves about my laptop. He was knowledgeable, kind, and a joy to interact with. Apple told me the repair would most likely wipe my computer clean, and take 14+ business days. Yonas and Derek got my laptop back to me in seven days, with all my data preserved. I cannot say enough good things about this shop; I will be taking all of my repairs there in the future! read more

Micro Center is a kingdom of geekdom ... at a price. They stock just about everything that is needed for the computer geek, but they are limited in selection, as expected at a retail location. They are great to pick up a part or two. The only contact I had with their staff was pleasant. The two men were funny and were helpful. The prices do not match those other stores on-line. They are quite expensive for certain items, while cheap for others. read more

This place is in walking distance of my home so it's convenient. I bought some Apple computers here and lots of little things. It's a good computer store generally, but I have three gripes: (1) Their book department is in a really sad, neglected state. It looks like they're just throwing random books up on the shelves. There seems to be a saleperson attached to the book department, but whenever I've asked them a question, this person betrays him or herself as someone who has never ever read a computer book. This section feels like Siberia, and is especially pointless when you compare it to the vastly superior ambience and organization of the computer book section of the Harvard Sq Barnes and Noble and to the vastly cheaper prices you can get on just about every book here from Amazon. (2) Sometimes they are so understaffed and it takes forever to get a salesperson. (3) Whenever you buy something, they always ask you to confirm your address. Probably so they can send you junk mail and kill lots of trees. But the mere fact that you have to answer this question when you buy something seems to violate my natural rights as a human being. I don't know any other store that is this intrusive. Maybe someday, I'll have the cojones to say none of your business what my address is to the cashier. read more

This place looks like a 1980s electronics store, which is kind of amazing. They have a commissioned based sales force on the floor, which Best Buy does not, and while another reviewer criticized their customer service, I think it's better than what you'd get at Best Buy. That said, my sales associate was really not all that helpful with the product I was looking for and still asked to put a sticker on my item to get the commission for it. They have pretty competitive prices, as far as I can see. On the whole, it is certainly a more pleasant shopping experience than Best Buy. read more

Eh, I'm not overly impressed with Micro Center. I'm a self-proclaimed (Mac) geek and although you can find a wide selection of electronics here, the prices aren't any better than you'd find elsewhere on most things. The sales people are too hit or miss for my taste. I absolutely love when someone trying to sell me expensive equipment knows less about a product than I do. /sarcasm. My recommendation: Do your research first. Shop the sales online first and only come to the store when you know exactly what you're buying. Don't listen to the majority of the sales people who have no idea what they're talking about. read more

Since the days of your local corner computer store are over, this is just about as good service and selection you can get. They have everyhting from accessories and arcane components (last time I was there I bought a bag of 15 jumpers) to complete computer systems. I could just never go to any of the other computer chains again. Best Buy, CompUSA etc have nothing on this. read more

They have a good selection and good prices, but the service stinks. It's definitely fine if you know what you want, know you won't need ANY help (and that includes actually finding a specific product you know you want), and are 100% certain there's no possible reason anything will need to be returned (and this includes having blind faith that everything will work properly). I was just there today, with the intention of buying a computer I'd already researched and decided upon. Their price is the best, tied with CompUSA. But I get there, and what do I do? Wait around for or chase around salespeople for almost an hour to see if the thing was in stock, because the box wasn't underneath the display. Eventually, I got downright angry, and decided that I didn't want to give them my money anymore. Furthermore, I've had issues with returns... I once bought a refurbished CD-RW drive that turned out to be faulty, and even though I returned it only a day after I originally purchased it, they gave me a hard time and refused to offer anything but store credit printed onto a cheap receipt, which the ink faded off of within a month. When I tried bringing the receipt (which was marginally readable, but no longer scannable) to claim my credit about a month later, they refused to honor it. Parking lot's always full too, but it's Cambridge so what can you expect. There's lots of good things about Micro Center, but the service needs some major improvement. I don't think I'll be back for awhile. read more

I've never had a poor experience here. In fact, this is always the first place (and usually the only place) I go to for my tech needs. There are countless reasons why you should go, but I'll only name the most pertinent: #1 CHEAP. CHEAP. CHEAP. If you haven't noticed, lots of wallet rapists in the tech world. I'm quite the sale troll, so I rarely pay full price for anything. Here, I don't really need to look that hard or wait long for a good deal. When looking for a decent external hard drive, I was able to get a 320GB Western Digital portable hard drive for about 60 bucks. The boyfriend was able to get an XBOX 360 for less than $150, my brother was able to get an HP with Intel i7, 6GB RAM and 500GB hard drive for about $500 WITH insurance... the list goes on. Except for Apple products, you can pretty much price match for any product and Micro Center will come out on top. #2 NO VULTURES. At least, not yet. If I'm browsing, someone will occasionally walk by and ask if I need assistance, and if I say no they move on. No loquacious launch about why this camera I looked at for ten seconds is worth the $400 asking price. And when I do want something, I can barter with an associate who has no issue showing me the cheaper item so long as it meets my needs. #3 MASSIVE, MASSIVE INVENTORY. It's rare that something is out of stock here, and I love it. In the off chance that it isn't available, just have them look online or order it through other locations. #4 SERVICE REPAIRS Americans have this thing where everything needs to be available NOW NOW NOW RIGHT THIS SECOND. Patience is a lost virtue. There are long lines NOT because there isn't anyone working but because there's LOTS of people shopping and in need of repairs. My brother's laptop got thrown out the window accidentally by our cousin with cerebral palsy. He brought it in, they checked what was damaged. Three days later he got a call back telling him the damage was irreparable, and sent him a Visa gift card with the ORIGINAL purchase price. read more

It's great that MIcro Center exists. They offer prices that are close to identical to what you'd find online - Amazon, Newegg etc. They offer an excellent variety of computer goods - I usually don't even need to check their website first because they always have what I need, and a lot that I don't - from Rasberry Pis to hackable routers to regular cheap thumbdrives. I co-own a tech company and we do a lot of purchasing here as resellers. The only complaint I have is that it took like 3 months for the reseller process to complete - an aspect of their corporate status, I think. Treat their employees well! They are for the most part very knowledgeable and seem to work very hard. read more

I took my iMac in to get a new hard drive. This is not the sort of thing I trust myself to install. Walked in carrying a 24" iMac and the guy at the door just stared at me. Trying not to drop it, I asked where repairs were and he just said "to the left." Okay. I go to the left and find 3 different counters, none actually labeled repair and have to ask another person. While trying not to drop my computer. Tell the guys at repair desk that I need a new hard drive and they ask "what makes you think that." So I explain that 2 months ago it had crashed, that I had reformatted and repaired it but when I tried to upgrade the OS yesterday it crashed. Could not be repaired or unmounted. The guy at the counter nods and then tells me I should pay $79 for diagnostics and then $50 to install a new hard drive plus another $50 to install the OS. It's pretty evident that he knows the hard drive is the problem and I KNOW the hard drive is the problem. I'm sure they're trained to get people to pay for this stuff but COME ON. I clearly know what's going on with my computer. After telling them I only want to replace the hard drive, I say I also want to upgrade the RAM to full capacity. Again am met with looks of confusion. After this they "confirm" that I want them to install the OS and I have to say no. I ended up just getting exactly what I asked for and only paying for that but I can't help but feel that they kept trying to tack stuff on because GASP I WAS A WOMAN IN A SKIRT. Seriously guys, I just explained that I repaired my hard drive previously. I think I can handle installing the OS. read more

Ben B hit the nail on the head with his review. These kinds of stores just don't exist anymore. You can go to Best Buy or Staples and if you're lucky they will carry one brand or two brands of the component you are looking for. Micro Center has everything you could ever want. The pricing is competetive, they always have good specials, and the staff at least tries to help you if you have questions. With all the product information and tutorials on the web today, you can't hold it against a store if they don't always have the best price or the best service in the biz. Sometimes it's just nice to actually go and see the products up close and actually touch them. Nowhere else in the area can you go and play around with a dozen different gaming laptops, or see 30 different mice or monitors. I recently was in the market for an entry level gaming laptop for school and light gaming. I was between a few MSI and ASUS models. It is very difficult to tell the quality of a build from pictures on the company website. Even though I ended up going with a model they didn't carry, I want to thank Micro Center for allowing me to go and experience similar models and get a feel for what I was really getting for $1100. read more

Let's face it - 99% of the time, it's easier to buy just about anything online. But in the highly technical realm of computer electronics, it can make a huge difference to get some guidance from someone who actually knows what the hell they're talking about. Enter Micro Center. This place has genuinely restored my faith in the retail experience. It's a whole store filled with sales associates like that one dude you know who used to dissect and then rebuild vacuum cleaners as a kid, just because he could. And I'm not talking about those cleverly-branded, quasi-vapid "geniuses" you get at the Apple store. No, these dudes are just actual geniuses. Barry - the friendly wunderkind who helped me out - quickly identified that the computer I had my eye on was overkill, in terms of what my primary use for it would be. So instead of up-selling me, he basically designed a machine for me from scratch, with 6x the storage space and the same processing speed as the one I was eyeballing. All for much, much less. The custom mods were finished even sooner than he'd promised, and I came home with a powerful new centerpiece for my home recording studio. Now THAT'S what's up. In about 2 hours time, the guys at Micro Center earned themselves a customer for life. read more

I did, and the woman promised that the manager would call me as soon as possible to help me resolve my problem. No manager has ever called or emailed me to resolve the problem. So apparently they never had any intention of helping me resolve the issue, or decided it didn't matter if they lost a customer. What is important to note is that I bought my Dell computer from them a year or so ago, and I spent a good deal of extra money for a warranty on the computer -- so despite all the extra money I paid, they refuse to talk to me or fix the problem with my computer. *And please note that the two men I spoke to in the repair department were extremely rude to me, and when I asked if they had the new part I needed in stock, they refused to even check or put me on the phone with a salesperson to check if they had the part available for me. It made absolutely no sense. I will say that in the past, the person I was dealing with was very nice. I assume he left the company. In the future I hope there is training for the employees at Micro Center so that they don't yell at their customers and mansplain. Which is very much what it felt like to me. I highly recommend if you buy a computer to buy it directly from the source, and not from Micro Center. I feel like I wasted my money and time, and I was simply trying to support a local business. read more

I have been here many times because it is convenient but it has the worst customer service of maybe anywhere in the Boston area. It is shocking how bad it is. This last time I almost had to tackle someone to notice me- let alone be able to answer my questions. If you don't know exactly what you need they will probably lead you in the wrong direction. I doubt many of the people who work there are proficient with computers. It's no geek squad and the basic social skills are pathetic. Also the checkout people have MAJOR attitude. It is frustrating to go here and if you need paper or ink or something easy like that - maybe a new mouse or keyboard then I reccomend it on pricing and convenience only. read more
