Some of these menu items may be unfamiliar but none are so odd you'll be weirded out. Plus, thus have food under plastic on the counter lien you'll see in a Chinatown. Just point and grunt - they'll help you out. After you've ordered, grab a tray and some kitchen tongs. Pretend to be a crab. Once that's over - delight in the myriad of Mexican baked goods. So good. Love this bakery. They always have warm bread when ever I go. So many options too! Their restaurant side serves tasty dishes. I love their Hawaiian torta and their tacos al pastor. Not a fan of their horchata. Don't know if it was just a one time thing but their horchata was way too sweet and you could taste the sweet milk they put on it and the vanilla. This place is great. They make all kinds of inexpensive and what I can only assume are authentic mexican sandwiches. At lunch with coworkers we may have been the only non-Hispanic people in the restaurant. Everybody was happy with what they got even though it ranged from tacos to sandwiches and within those from pork to beef to chicken. They were all hot and delicious. The deserts are also amazing and there's a whole wall of them. I can even remember all of the little puffy pastry deliciousness that I ate, but they were all delicious. The other amazing part is that a big sandwich and desert came out to be like $7. It's by far one of the best lunch deals for food around. read more

I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp. It was our first morning in Austin and my husband and I wanted Mexican food. Even around 9am, we were able to order tacos, huarache and horchata. I've already been here 3 times too which says a lot. Since its only been 3wks. Food: They have different options compares to a taqueria. Their meat selections are diff too such as only ground beef (picadillo (?)), pastor, Carne asada and mushrooms as options. Didn't see carnitas, lengua or pollo asado for example. They have gorditas, flautas too. -what I tried: quesadilla, torta, huarache and tacos. Pastor is decent..vibrant color to it and served with bits of pineapple . Asada is even better.. tender! No grisly pieces. -the torta w egg, chorizo and milanesa is really good. Comes served on toasted bread with a brush of mayo, refried beans, tomato, melted cheese and lettuce. I like how to chorizo is cooked more thoroughly compared to most places. It's not mushy. -the huarache is thinner than what I had elsewhere and tender. It had too much cream for my liking but you can just wipe it off. -breads: there are at least 15 varieties to satisfy your sweet tooth, ranging from cookies to croissants, donuts and traditional mexican breads. If you don't have a sweet tooth, try their hand held meat pies. The chicken potato was tasty and the spicy beef wasn't spicy at all.. the flaky, buttery crust is delicious though. At $2 a piece, I had 2 for lunch. The breads on the other hand didn't have labeled pricing. I ended up trying only a few and liked the one with cream cheese swirl on top and a thick 3 inch layer of buttery cake below. I tried the one covered in sugar and rolled almost like a croissant..it was firm and drier..not a fave but I liked the hint of orange flavor. I overall don't love mexican baked goods and prefer Chinese baked items. But I did however like the cheese one a lot. -horchata and coffee: very good and smooth. Not chalky like some places especially when you reach the bottom. Even their coffee is smooth. Wish they had cool pitcher of creamer rather than these tiny plastic cups where I use three..and it says keep cold..and its not. They leave it on the counter.. Overall, I'd return in a heartbeat. Not only is this place the best Mexican bakery north of San Antonio, but it serves up some pretty amazing tortas (sandwiches), tacos, quesadillas, and even kolaches. This place is about as authentic as it gets - like walking into Mexico. However, fair warning to all gringos - this place is not affiliated with the mediocre chain restaurant of the same name. No tex-mex can be found here. The place is split into two sides: savory and sweet. On the sweet side, there numerous glass cases filled with Mexican pastries that I cannot begin to name. Cookies, cakes, sweet breads, empanadas, croissants, bolillos, other things stuffed with cream cheese or cajeta. Grab a metal tray and tongs from the center island and start loading yourself up. DELICIOUS. I personally gravitate toward the cream cheese items. There is also a case of homemade gelatos and fancier cakes which I have not yet tried. Especially not to be missed are the meat pastry items in the heated case at the center island. Empanadas are filled with various meats like picadillo, ham and cheese, chicken tinga, etc. (Tinga is my favorite!) The puff pastry on these empanadas is fabulous - like perfection. They also have the best kolaches I have ever personally had. The "hot dog" component is stuffed with cheese and chiles and has the perfect balance of sweetness and spice. On the savory side, numerous authentic food items are available that generally fit into the breakfast and lunch category. My personal favorite is the economical $4 "egg sandwich", which is stuffed with tomato, scrambled egg, pickled jalepenos, avocado, beans, onions and topped with hot sauce and is so much food that I have to split it. The torta chilanga is also highly recommended, adding tasty milanesa to the mix. The tacos aren't quite as good - they are street-food style and are piled high with onions, cilantro and lime but tend to be fairly dripping in grease. Numerous bowls of tasty aguas frescas are available nearby and should be indulged in. All in all - pretty much the best weekend breakfast place, ever. P.S. - This is probably not the place to bring your parents, however. I brought parents here for the "experience" and they just kind of squinted at the menu, made a bunch of complaints in front of the cashier, and then tried to order enchiladas (which are not on the menu). I came here off a recommendation from a bandmate of mine whose mom had TOLD him to check it out. "Yo! You need to go to Chuy's, dawg. Those tortas r da shit!" he said. We had gone on another occassion to check out the bakery side of it. It was ok. I don't eat pastries too much, but every once in a while I'll get a craving for a concha or a campechana. Their bolillos must be like crack, because every time we go they're sold out or people are hanging around waiting for the next batch to come out. The restaurant side has all sorts of tacos, tortas, tostadas, huaraches, tlacoyos, and specialty plates (most of them with bistec) under $6. I want to note that they have rice-filled tacos like the "Tortilla de maíz azul organic" which is stuffed with rice and blue organic corn. You can order the tacos in singles or in an order of 3. I had the taco de bistec, al pastor, and carne enchilada. My favorite was the carne enchilada. Their tortas come with the works: lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, jalapeños, beans, and chipotle mayo. I had the Torta Chilanga. That sucker was gigantic. Glad I ate the tacos first! The Chilanga comes with milanesa (fried breaded steak), ham, chorizo, and cheese. Oh my gatooooo! So good! The bread is made in house and was nice and toasty. While we were there stuffing our faces, I noticed a group of Cubans and guess what they ordered?!?! Oh yes, the Torta Cubana comes with milanesa, ham, sausage, and cheese and apparently that's the one I should have ordered according to my bandmate. By the way, a big shout out to my Cubanos!!!! ¿¡¿Qué bola asere!?! As far as tortas are concerned, I think El Paisa's are better, but when I'm in Little Mexico South Austin during the daytime, this would be where I'd go for tortas. They also have a location off Research Blvd. One more thing. They call out your order number in Spanish so learn to count at least to 80. WTF moment: When I say Little Mexico, I'm also referring to the way people drive through that shopping center parking lot. We almost got into a wreck there. Excellent variety of inexpensive and tasty Mexican pastries. I give 4 stars for the bakery section. However, take your breakfast taco order elsewhere. We ordered the egg and bacon tacos, and paid 50 cents extra each for cheese. The tacos are exceptionally small, and we each found perhaps two morsels of "bacon". Their green salsa was quite tasty, however. Definitely over-priced for the value compared to other options available so many places. read more

Food was not good. No vegetarian options, ordered a torta with no meat add beans, all other toppings desired. Half of my torta had no beans whatsoever. Beans are so cheap, that this business should be embarrassed to send an order like that out to a patron. One slice of avocado, a handful of lettuce, one tomato, bread was totally dry. This thing was just sad for 6.99. Meanwhile, my husband's torta was stuffed with meat, had cilantro and onion. Made no sense. Will not be returning. The taco de arroz con milanesa is my favorite but the quesadillas and huaraches are very tasteful. The blue corn tortillas make it very unique. Although the blue corn tastes exactly like the traditional white/yellow con; your mind is tricked into thinking it has better flavor! The sweet bread look delicious, I haven't tried much of it. This is a review of their restaurant side only. I come here 3-4 days a week for their awesome ham and egg torta. At only $4, it's perfect for brunch. I've brought friends here who were so blown away they came back to eat again in the same day! The pierna torta is really good too. My only complaint is that their al pastor leaves alot to be desired and is flavorless. I'll dock a star for that as al pastor is my favorite mexican food. I love this place so much! The sweetbreads are some of the best I've ever tasted and the tortas are insanely good. One thing for first time visitors. There are trays and tongs. Grab those and load up with sweetbreads, then take them to counter for purchase. We love this place. The variety is outstanding, the pastries are fresh, cheap, and the service is pleasant. Or usual order is 4 baked goods, and 1-2 drinks, and it is under $6 every time. The kids love the muffins and donuts, I love the slices of bread with lemon frosting. My husband loves it all. We have only had one item there that we did not enjoy, and that was the cookies. They are super dry and crumbly, just not our style. We have only tried the baked goods, nothing from the cafe, but this is hands down our favorite treat stop in Austin. read more

My sister brought me here when I was visiting and I'm so sad I can't go all the time. The panaderia is just like I remember as a child in Mexico and the food (I had horchata and a torta) is amazing and so inexpensive. The ingredients are fresh and you can see the kitchen through a window, which my little nephew loved. It was pretty busy on a Saturday morning but the staff were friendly. It's pretty non-descript from the outside and in a strip mall but don't let that fool you. I hope the hipsters don't all find out about it! read more

Wow.....I live near this place, so I can't believe I haven't tried it before today. My first trip will not be my last. I had a torta at lunch. It really resembles a Cuban sandwich. The price is right and the portion is insanely huge. I could really do better with a half torta, but that's no an option. As it stands, I ate about 3/4 of the sandwich before I felt like I was gonna need a bucket, if ya know what I mean. I then ventured over to the bakery to check things out. Mostly breakfast items and I was looking for cookies. They had some selections, but nothing that caught my eye. I was going to pass on baked goods until one of my friends pointed out the cream cheese danishes were only 75 cents. I got 3 of those and 1 of the bolios for $2.38. That's a really good price for homemade bakery items. Atmosphere is nice and clean. They must have done a remodel on this space because the shopping center they're in has been there for decades. Can't wait to go back and try some other items. I've heard their pastor tacos are good and you can bet I'll be trying them. read more

This place is fantastic! What a gem. You have to search for it, but it's definitely worth the trip. I was told about this place by someone who makes great sandwiches. He said this was his supplier. As soon as I entered I was overtaken by the smell of fresh-baked bread. The bakers were pulling bread out of the oven, dozens of bouillons at a time, and dropping them into large baskets for the taking. In addition to this, there were some prepackaged breads sitting on shelves. They were not well labeled, but you could easily roam around and find what you wanted. In addition, there were dozens of types of pastries on shelves, from cookies to donuts, cream-filled confections as far as the eye can see. They also serve gelato, with a wide selection to satisfy your sweet tooth. Lastly, some cooks in the kitchen were using the fresh bread to whip up deli sandwiches and other items for folks sitting at tables. The best part is the price. The bouillons are $0.35 each, and I walked out with a half loaf of great bread (about 10 slices) for a dollar! No question, this is the only place I'll be getting from in the future. read more

The bakery has an amazing selection of breads and sweet pasties self service with a tray and thongs , you get what you want and if you are hungry try the breadfast tacos ,cheap $1.75. Where has this place been all my life. Just happened upon it en route to Academy and stopped in. Finally..a good place for affordable, excellent bread. The bollios are still warm and there is a incredible array of Mexican pastries. Menu with tacos and tortas etc... I tried the taco al pasto and bistecas for $1.75 each, both were served street style on 2 small corn tortillas. Delicious. Also sat at the bar overlooking the grills and kitchen and watched one of their tortas being put together, wow. This place is the real deal. Torta for me next time please. read more
