The host Chris was very pleasant and accommodating and looked very respectable in a suit. The food is outstanding. Metro is the only place in town I order seafood. Whether it's sea bass or shrimp, it's always fresh! Of course you can never go wrong w a nice steak, cooked to the perfect temp! Sadly I think this restaurant is overrated. While it is designed to cater to the upper echelons within the area with stunning decor the quality of the food did not match the high prices. The starters were somewhat bland with the exception of their signature crisped spinach. The meal I chose was the half rack of lamb with the trimmings. The plate was visually stunning, BUT the lamb was way over-cooked and the mashed potato that came with it was at best room temperature to cold. I was part of a large party and the wait staff were top notch - no fault there - kudos to the young lady for her enthusiasm. All-in-all, if it's ambiance you want then you have found it. Start with flash fried spinach. The party of 6 had every thing from shrimp to chicken to steak. All perfectly prepared. I had the St.Louis Cardinal. Bacon wrapped shrimp, chicken skewer, steak in a reduction sauce. Very flavorful. The reduction on the steak and glaze on shrimp were a touch too sweet.. But I avoid all sugars.. The fries that came with it did not fit with the meal. (I wish I would of had the asparagus). Every one raved about the steaks and I have had the sea bass before which is great. The food is carefully crafted, delectable, ever changing menu is bound to keep anyone on their toes! The variety of food is made to accommodate all picky eaters. Everything from steak, seafood, pasta, PIZZA, sliders and of course the creative, unique items!!! Menu items include gluten free and vegetarian dishes, ALWAYS something for everyone. The wine list is extensive, bar has probably 99% of any drink you could possibly order! The service is very attentive, atmosphere is very warm. Restaurant has always been very clean and tidy any time I've come in. I disagree with the clique, place to be seen reviews. Anybody you come up to is incredibly friendly! Everyone is very inclusive. Had an exceptional experience here. The staff was wonderful, I am from out of town and I almost felt like a regular - they were very friendly and extremely attentive. I sat in at the bar and enjoyed the company of Kristen and Patrick - top notch customer service with them! The flash fried spinach was absolutely delicious and the salmon dish with the corn and salmon fritter with Gouda mashed potatoes and asparagus was unbelievable. The wine list was also amazing. The service was not good. I came in with a friend and we felt as if we were shunned because we did not fit the Springfield mold. When we arrived at the table, we asked to take a few minutes to review the menu, and she seemed upset that we asked. The food was ok, but the lamb was extremely gamy. My friend's salad was not ok, he sent it back. The best thing was the bread sauce. I really wanted to like this place, because I heard many good things, I did not have that same experience. My daughter & I decided to try a new restaurant each week during her senior year. We went to Metropolitan Grill our second week and never went anywhere else! The food is always exceptional, the menu changes on a regular basis, they have a great wine list and you will want to ask for "Kari". She will make you feel like family and enhance your dining experience. We have changed our night out to match her schedule on more than one occasion! Yes, it is a little pricey but only if you are comparing it to the chain restaurants. Update 12/30/13: Fraudulent charges without customer signing receipt. Was there for drinks and opened a tab for two glasses of wine. My friend asked for my drinks to be put on her card, but I later noticed a charge on my account...way in excess of even what I ordered. I never signed anything, because my friend signed "her" credit card receipt with my drinks on her tab. I called several times over the past couple weeks and the accountant just kept stating they would look into it, but nothing was done. I even took time out of my schedule to go into the restaurant and spoke with an owner, who said the charges would be refunded. In the end I finally got in touch, yet again, with the accountant, who I had to specifically ask to fax me a copy of the receipt and charges, and discovered the bartender put all drinks on my tab - which I never authorized - swiped my friend's card, but charged everything to my card, and gave the receipt to my friend to sign, leave a tip, etc., all on my card. First time at this place, and I won't be returning, for unprofessionalism, not handling customer concerns in a timely manner, and fraudulent business practices. ______________ Original post: Charged two credit cards for the same drinks - fraudulent charges without customer signing receipt. My friend picked up the tab for drinks after the bartender swiped my card for the first of the two glasses of wine I drank. Later I noticed two charges pending on my debit card, which eventually went through, for the amount my friend paid on her credit card, with a tip. They charged me for HER drinks AND MY drinks, which I never agreed to. I signed nothing. This was two weeks ago, and I've left numerous messages, spoken with my bank (who will only close my debit card and issue a new one, which I cannot do - it's the holidays, and for obvious reasons it's excessive). I even went in and spoke with one of the owners personally and offered to pay for exactly what I ordered - TWO glasses of wine. I was told the charge would be refunded. But nothing has been done, and I've received no return call stating it has been refunded. I NEVER signed a credit card receipt so the charges are fraudulent. To them it is chump change, but I value my hard-earned money, and $40 is a LOT for two glasses of wine. Careful who you give your credit card to swipe, they'll just do what they want with it, knowing the consumer has little to no recourse. read more

I have been to Metro several times and the food is usually pretty good. I recently went back after several months and noticed they had done some interior changes. It resembles a cheap strip-club in the bar area, which used to look a lot classier than it does now. All they are missing is the big pole in the middle of the room. I think they are trying to cater to the "older bar fly" crowd and trying to make them feel like they are in a club, rather than a nice restaurant. The feel I get when I walk into the bar is more of a meat market for cougars and old guys than a restaurant bar. The bar staff seems very aloof and selective on who they like to serve at times, not the friendliest staff around town, but at least the food is worth the visit. read more

I have ate at the Metro 3 times now and there is always something that is not good. In the past it has been cold food and inattentive service. Last night It was a cockroach in the mushroom appetizers. Yes a COCKROACH! It was in the mushroom sauce and at one point it was in a co-workers mouth! He felt it and pulled it out of his mouth and onto his plate. Upon showing the waiter, he got little more than an apology. For the price you can do way better in Springfield. Completely over rated restaurant... Our waiter was faux-friendly and chilly. Why?!?My husband's steak was overdone and slathered in a sauce that wasn't warm. Although my filet was great, the mac&cheese and crab cake was over seasoned (SALTY!!) and mushy. Mediocre at best. We ordered oysters, crab cakes, and ceviche on watermelon to start. Oysters were good and were served in a metal skillet on ice. Crab cakes were mush served in prosciutto cups which overpowered the crab paste. The ceviche was disappointing; sparsely sprinkled and unidentifiable, it was served on large pieces of watermelon which overpowered the tiny bits of seafood. For entrees, we ordered the sea bass, rack of lamb, and two ribeyes. Sea bass was okay and the lamb was okay as well. The steaks were one step away from needing steak sauce! The service was mediocre as well. Long waits in between each visit and partial table clearing of plates. We also sat at our table for about 10 minutes before being greeted by the waiter. Primo food -worth the $$$ price. We have yet to have a meal here that we didn't rave about after. From appetizers to dessert, the entire food experience is extraordinary. We are not "foodies" and I am not an adventurous eater....the menu was a bit daunting at first, but my taste buds were very happy throughout. The service is exceptional and the vibe is casual but elegant. No need to put on a dress or tie, but you can if you prefer. We waited WAY to long to try this place, fearing it was "too fancy" for us. Don't make the same mistake we did. You deserve to have meal like this as often as you can afford it. (Totally worth saving money you might spend on lesser meals to have dinner here.) I took my parents there last Fri night for my dads 65th bday and it was not a good night. We have enjoyed a few meals at this restaurant but I don't think we will go back. Out of the 4 meals only one was good. They brought my father the wrong steak and by the time he received his meal we were all done eating. My mothers salmon was so overcooked it was white and not pink. A restaurant like this should have never even served that fish. They didn't bring the side dish to the other two meals either. After waiting over an hour to even get our food we were very disappointed. The worst part was upon telling the waitress that the food was not good she offered a quick sorry and was on her way. I would have expected a little higher standard from a restaurant like this. Seems like there are a lot of drunks walking around from the bar area as well. If you are looking for high quality food and service I would say to look else where. The Flame and Touch will be better options. read more

Dateline 9/9/12 - Will Putsch, Chef: Visiting my daughter in Springfield for the weekend, we searched for a good restaurant that has oysters. My daughter remembered the Metropolitan Grill -- pulled up their website and checked out the menu. Indeed, they had two oyster appetizers plus an oyster and shrimp bar. YEA!!!!! Went first seating Sunday night. Seated promptly. The waiter introduced himself, gave us menus and gave us a few minutes to look them over. We perused the menu and found several things we were interested in. When our waiter returned and asked if we had questions, I asked how the oyster bar worked - because there was no price listed beside the menu item. The waiter said, "Oh, we don't have oysters on Sunday or Monday." I looked at him quizzically and said, "Really?" He said, "Well, that's been a recent change here. We get deliveries of oysters two to three times a week, but we run out quickly." And I said, "You have oyster appetizers and the oyster and shrimp bar on the menu." He stated that the appetizers were also not available on Sunday and Monday. Nowhere on the menu did it say "Oysters only Tuesday through Saturday." There is no indication on the website of oyster day limitations. I suggested to the waiter that I came there specifically for oysters. I was very disappointed. He made no attempt to apologize for the lack of disclosure nor for the unavailablity of oysters. With no oysters available, I had to determine a plan B. I settled on a pizza with Capicola, Prosciutto, Genoa salami and other delights -- sounded pretty good. My daughter selected pan-seared duck breast. We ordered a very nice pinot noir. Entrees were delivered. My pizza was very disappointing - thin crust, thin toppings, too heavy on the grated parmesan cheese, as applied by the waiter. However, the duck breast with roasted figs and brussel sprouts was visually delightful, savory and expertly cooked, leaving the palate crying for more! Delicious, individual rounds of bread were served with a delightful house-made dipping sauce. Finally, something went right! read more
