I was nervous because it was so full, and appeared crazy busy...but due to all the staff members working all the tables, it went fabulously well! I'm definitely a regular here but it's been some months; but we're reunited and it feels so good!! Got my go to of chicken and waffles, waffle done well, my son got the Spicy Honey Chicken biscuit with hash browns. Im partaking in an Almer Palmer with sweet tea and he has a Sprite and no ice...teenagers and pop but whatever. Breakfast Review: We arrived at Metro Diner around 10:45 am and waited about 10 minutes to be seated. It was surprisingly crowded for a Friday morning, but the wait was reasonable. Once seated, Kavon was our server and he was great. He took our order and the food came out incredibly fast. This place really keeps things moving. I was very disappointed. We are from Jacksonville, and we're excited to see a familiar restaurant made it here. Sadly, the quality of the food is nothing like it was. Where did the stuffed French toast go? This is not the metro diner of drive ins diners and dives. This is a more expensive Dennys. My spouse ordered over easy eggs and instead they came out broken and incinerated. The biscuits and gravy clearly used less than fresh biscuits that were still rock hard under that definitely not made from scratch gravy. We won't go back. The quality is not where it once was. Service--the tables were very slow to be cleaned and turned over. It was a busy time and there were 5-6 large tables full of debris from previous diners. My drink was never refilled, and no one asked how our food was, just dropped the check. Ratings 2 because we still ate most of our meal, and it was what you'd expect for breakfast. Very fast service. Our food came out in around 5 minutes. They are known for their fried chicken it seems and we weren't disappointed. We had the chicken & waffles, the fried chicken benedict, teriyaki wings, rib plate, and croissant french toast. The chicken and waffles were obviously good. Probably the best that I have tried in the area so far. The chicken is very well seasoned and juicy except for the breast, which was a bit dry but is common for that part of chicken. The crust was very crunchy and tasted delicious with the syrup. The strawberry butter was fragrant and light. The waffles were crispy and toasted nicely with standard waffle flavors. I really liked the dish overall. The rib plate was alright. I'm not sure if they bread or do something with the ribs but it wasn't like a baby back rib dish. It was okay and the sauce was pretty average for that type of dish. The croissant french toast was great too. Very very buttery and delicious. The egginess of both the french toast and croissant made the dish taste so good to me. This was definitely my second favorite dish. Our waiter was fast and very helpful. Pretty standard dining atmosphere, typical for a diner but a little more updated than others. If you dont want to wait on weekends, book a reservation because it can get busy. Unfortunately, the food fell short. Grits were undercooked and bland. Not even salt and pepper could fix these grits. Pancakes were thick and just okay nothing else. Bacon was overcooked, dry, and tasted like it had been microwaved. The only way to mess toast up is to burn it and that's exactly what happened. If you're after good service, this place will give you that. But if food quality matters more, you might leave disappointed. The sitting is standard seating with tables, chairs and booths. Soooo....you ALL know that I am a fan of Metro Diner (MD), Suffolk, VA! This review will NOT stop me from going. But I'm a little disappointed. Typically, MD is consistent and I have no issues. Today was my first day ordering takeout and I'm so disappointed. I ordered online at about 2:40p and called at 2:51pm with a request to hold the powdered sugar for the waffles & place it on the side (with carry out orders it will melt). But no one answered until the third call and it was too late. I was told that it had already been added. Also, one of my sides was missing. Since we are not dining in, it's important to get orders correct. No I didn't call about my missing item because I was just done and disappointed. But like I said, this is my fourth or fifth time here so I will give them a pass. I'm writing this to show them that we still care and I want them to rise above the rest and be the best. It's hard work but it pays off. A few tips: 1. Put powdered sugar in a side container and place in the condiment bag. NOT with the waffle as it will melt. 2. Treat external guests the same as dining in guests. That's all I'm going to say. If I say more everyone will know who the person is and I really like the person. I'm presuming that they had a bad day (which we all have). But it's ok to take a break and start over. 3. Please change the chicken oil. I LOVE MD's chicken but the take out was horrible! I was so disappointed. You can immediately smell that the oil was old and my checking was fried terribly hard. I hope our upcoming visit will be better. read more

Having been a chef/cook for restaurants, hotels, fishing boats and tugboats I have to say if you're in the area eat here. The smell of the food was captivating the moment I opened the door, inside I found the young bubbly, hostess, very friendly, and willing to answer my questions and yes, I decided this was where I would eat. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was fabulous. I'm 71. There were people older than I and people much younger than I enjoying the food and enjoying the music. It wasn't too loud it was just right and when the food came, it was delicious and although it's a long way from my house, I will make an excuse to go back to this place with my wife. The waffles are still delish, but the chicken tastes double fried, not fresh. Moreover, during my last visit the waitress was friendly but had poor hygiene etiquette. The biscuit was tough kind of hockey puckish and had no flavor. The green beans were cooked too long and again had no flavor. The mashed potatoes and gravy had again no flavor just bland gelatinous thing on a plate. The fried chicken had break crispy skin and juicy meat inside but lacked seasoning. It was like we were almost in the south but not quite. Someone forgot to season the coating on the chicken and then forgot the chicken needed seasoning too. There was no wait to be seated. The restaurant appeared clean and was very inviting. Our waitress, Taylor, came to our table promptly to take her drink orders. She was pleasant and personable and very friendly. My husband loves chicken and waffles and that is what he ordered. The chicken was so crispy I could hear it. I ordered the croissant French toast. So glad we chose to go here! Everything was great! We sat on the patio and it was really nice. There were ducks that came right near our table which was neat. Our waitress was great. She took good care of us and gave great recommendations. My hamburger was one of the best I've had. Super juicy and lots of flavor. The fries were ok-could've been better. This is an updated review. This is (I believe) a chain restaurant originating in Florida, but don't let that deter you; the food here is always good. I'm down for breakfast any time of the day - the breakfast bowls & belgian waffles with fried chicken are DA BOMB! The fact that you can get a mixed drink with your brunch without going someplace that has a "bar" vibe is a definite plus in my book. I would recommend any of the breakfast items and sandwiches (I haven't had any of their dinner entrees like the shepherd's pie or chicken pot pie so I can't speak to them). read more

Dear Metro, I am always pleased with my dine in experience however yesterday I made a take out purchase. and was a bit disappointed. I ordered a green bean side .... There were maybe 15 string beans in there but they were inedible, chewy and over cooked. For the price I was not pleased. Also, I ordered the special bread pudding which I loved when I ordered it the day before when I dined in. But my take out portion appeared to be a little corner piece and it was dry. It was not worth the price nor did it impress me like the dessert I was served in my dine in experience the day before. I love Metro Diner but. I was a little let down with those two items . They were $10 of my $50 order. I wish that I had ordered something else. All this is to say, please do better with take out order selections. Not fun to be hungry, anticipating yummy food and then be disappointed. NOW... The Bbq-Bacon burgers and fries along with the house salad and chocolate cake I ordered were all EXCELLENT! I go to Metro diner, I say let me look at them menu, then I end up getting it. Why? Visit was on a Tuesday afternoon. The restaurant was 40% capacity with plenty of staff. We were promptly greeted by the hostess, who was warm and friendly and promptly seated. We ordered two sweet teas mine with a mango flavor which I enjoyed. For lunch the wife ordered a metro club with fries and I the country fried steak breakfast. For the first time ever, I had to send my entrée back as it was over fried and the sausage gravy looking very anemic. Our waitress was very apologetic and understanding offering a soup or salad while I waited. 10 minutes later, the manager brought out my entrée properly prepared and offered to comp my entree. I enjoyed the new dish and ate it in its entirety. I recommend the meat be tenderized so it's not so tough and cook till browned not orange. See a previous picture, The wife and I had a great lunch even with the small hiccup. You don't know what's going on in the back of the house, everyone can have an off day. What I learned from other reviews is, if something isn't right you need to let the restaurant know. They can't fix what they don't know. We met some friends here this weekend for brunch. There was an estimated 30 min wait on a Sunday and holiday weekend. There are some benches inside and outside while you wait for them to text you and let you know your table is ready. We were sat within 20 min to booth. It looked like there were mostly booth seating but you could also sit at a sandwich counter, very "diner like". Our server was pleasant and got our drinks started. They have $3 mimosas and I had a the special with cranberry and pineapple juice. We ordered Eggs Benedict, sausage gravy biscuits with scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, fried chicken plate and a sampler with pancakes, sunny side over eggs and hashbrowns with toast and sausage links. Our pregnant friend loved her pancakes and scrambled eggs and the sausage gravy was delicious. Way too much to eat. Downside: The extra wing on the chicken platter came out a bit behind and they forgot some sausage links but they were busy and there was more than enough food. The English muffin with the Benedict was hard to tear into with a knife. My office is close to here so I'd been once for lunch. I'm looking forward to coming again for breakfast even though it's about an hr for us. It's worth the drive from the peninsula. read more

Oh my Gosh!!! I was so excited to eat here after I walked in and saw the decor. It is an updated comfortable throwback (retro) diner. My husabnd and I had scrumptious Chicken and Waffles with homemade strawberry butter and old fashioned maple syrup. My Oh My! The portion of chicken is huge, tasty and fried up just right. Great seasoning. The waffles are thick and fluffly. I enjoyed it all with hot tea and great tasting water. They have a fancy tea box that they let you chose from. I drank the Chai Tea, Lavender Tea and the Green Tea while I enjoyed great service. Really cool to see all age groups enjoying meals together. It is very clean and welcoming. We stopped here on our way back from Williamsburg to NC on Memorial Day weekend. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, particularly checking items for my son's food allergies (they have gluten-free buns). Their fish & chips were tasty and fried well.
