This was one of those experiences that far exceeded every expectation, in every way. Absolutely worth the 20 minute drive from Portsmouth for our anniversary dinner. And downtown Suffolk is just beautiful and quaint, it feels friendly and idyllic. *Ambience: Extremely comfortable, super approachable, but also refined with lots of wood and brick, but open and airy, and lots of light. You walk in to a cocktail and bar area, with an incredible painted sign on the brick wall behind the bar, that is a total throwback. The bar is incredibly comfortable and open and warm feeling. There are hardwood tables and beautiful booths along with a private dining area in the back. Really couldn't ask for or want for a more comfortable environment. *Service: absolutely stellar, super friendly staff, our server could not have been nicer or more genuine, or had more of an "ownership attitude" as if the restaurant meant everything to her, and so did us being there. She knew everything on the menu, had great recommendations, and insured we were consistently taken care of. She truly missed nothing. Harper, the owner, came over to check on us and ensure we were enjoying ourselves. He couldn't have been nicer or kinder or more humble. Service was outstanding. *Food & Drinks: The food! The drinks! Oh man! I've been a "Yelp Elite Member" for almost 10 years and the food here at hT is near the top of all my reviews, hundreds of them. The highest quality ingredients, impeccably curated, ingeniously but simply paired, created with a true love for the art of cooking and the true joy of the consumer. This was obvious. We started with a Mainstream Manhattan and Old Fashioned from the bar. No ordinary bartender, she's a true mixologist/professional. Both drinks were excellent, no "simple syrup" used here, raw sugar cubes melted into the finest spirits, yummm! We order brussels sprouts from the appetizer menu everywhere we go and compare them. None have ever come close to our favorite, for a dozen years, until now. These were crispy on the outside, but juicy inside, flash fried to an al dente bite and finished (almost injected) with a cherry vinegar glaze that permeated every bite with sweet, tart perfection. We also started with the vibrant Camden County May Pea & Truffle Toast which was like a celebration of spring with a fresh, grilled baguette topped with fancy Italian truffle cheese (insane!), sweet tender may peas, and fresh pea shoots, all drizzled with olive oil for a fresh, earthy, and simple bite that captured the essence of this farm-to-table cuisine. For entrees we ordered the Ben Johnson's Soft Shell Crabs with remoulade and the Brown Sugar Brined Porkchop with pimp cheese, grits, and chard tomatoes with a side of hand cut fries with roast shallot mayo. Everything was stellar, no exceptions. I can honestly say this was **the best pork chop I've ever eaten, ever.** Tender, sweet, meaty and paired perfectly with the creamy cheese grits and the tang and smoke of the charred tomatoes. Ridiculously good! See my photos, too bad they don't come with "taste-o-vision", because, wow! The hand cut, skin on, double fried potatoes and roast shallot mayo were fantastic. As if that wasn't enough food, they also brought us stone ground cornbread, with a massive slab of rough salted butter, steamy, warm, soft, buttery perfection. I'm ready to go back now! *Value & Overall: I posted pictures of all menus and all prices. Their spirits and mixed drink selections from the bar are incredible. The food, service and ambience simply couldn't have been better. Prices, as you'll see, are exactly in line for what you get and an excellent value. Service was on point, quickly answering questions and providing great recommendations to the menu the varies slightly throughout the seasons. Couldn't pass up the flights today, between mimosas and ice cream had to sample a little of everything! The picnic plate was perfect for a small group to enjoy and the flounder fish and chips was great! The shrimp and grits were perfectly cooked and very flavorful as well! Bit of crispy brussels were a great table share for our party of three. This is a casual and comfortable location with plenty of seating. Didn't need a reservation for an early Saturday lunch, but available via Resy to secure your spot if desired. Absolutely exceptional! Took my wife here for a date night and instantly fell in love with the vibe; upscale casual. Could have easily dressed up or down and still felt like we fit in. Our server was great as well; very personable, had great recommendations, and visited the table at just the right intervals. Now the food. Wow, just wow. Everything we ate was amazing. I went here for dinner and had an excellent dining experience! Our server was also the bartender and she was awesome! She was super attentive and answered all of our questions! We started with the brussel sprouts - delicious and shared a Caesar salad with bacon added. I had the flounder which came with ham (my husband ate the ham LOL), and sweet potato puree, pecans, and this sweet glaze. It was delicious! My husband had the ribs, and said they were super tender and dressed properly! He's particular about his pork so this was huge! He had a side of the fries with the roasted shallot mayo...can you say yummy?!? I had their cornbread, which was delicious with the salted butter! I had the crème brûlée for dessert...just excellent! Let me start with I wish I could give our meal/evening a 5 1/2 star. It was great from start to finish. Now the details. First I recommend reservations. We had some so zero wait. But by 5:45 pm on a Friday, the place was filling up. But even with that I didn't see folks waiting. But still glad I made reservations. Service: Outstanding! Our young lady Hannah served us very well. I think she visited our table 5 times for one thing or another. Also note we seen her running around, so we weren't her only table. As for other staff, they came and filled our water and made sure we were good. Now to the meals: The wifey had the smash burger which she tells me was very good. She loved the sweet flavor the burger had. Perhaps this was from the onion jam but she doesn't know. The order of fries was a perfect size and was wonderfully cooked. The shallot mayo was also really good. The wifey was so kind to let me try that while dipping a fry or two. It was good. As for me, I had the shrimp and grits. I will say this and I told my server. It was the best I've ever had. Such a great flavor. I told them - never change that recipe. We also had an appetizer of SWEET ONION HUSHPUPPIES. They were also nicely done. Oh and don't let me forget two sweet teas. As for the location: A really nice looking place. Appears well kept and a bit classy. Let me touch on a couple extras that you don't really see at other places. Maybe because it's Valentine's Day weekend or maybe it's a normal thing but a couple of fresh roses were on each table. Also we were giving new silverware between or appetizers and main meal. Again never seen that kind of attention before. Total meal $90 for everything. Love Harper's table! Probably my favorite spot downtown. The staff is always friendly and I love swinging in and sitting at the bar for a delicious craft cocktail. The ribs are probably the best ribs I've ever had, and always my recommendation when anyone asks where to eat downtown. I ordered the mole poblano beef shank with creamy polenta was incredible--tender, rich, perfect heat. My boyfriend's shrimp and grits with that buttery creole sauce disappeared in minutes (best he's ever had). Finished with warm apple cake (which the apples were locally picked) and homemade vanilla ice cream--heaven. Cozy, unique decor and a private back table made it extra intimate. Highly recommend! Parking was surprisingly easy considering it is in the middle of downtown; there is a huge lot directly behind the restaurant. As soon as we were seated, the service was fast and efficient. Harper's is a great upscale spot in Suffolk, especially if you're not looking to battle the crowds for dinner in VB or Norfolk. Reservations are definitely recommended and as long as you book about a week in advance, you should have luck. A friend and I came here on a rainy September Saturday with a reservation at 6pm and were seated right away. Parking leaves much to be desired, but we scored a spot right in front of the restaurant. We started with the hush puppies and sorghum butter, a Coastal Reverie and a Rhubarb Rumor. The drinks were absolutely amazing and the hush puppies were delicious. The butter with the honey on top was chef's kiss. For entrees I had the pork chop and friend got the shrimp & grits. Such lovely portions and done to perfection. They actually overcooked my first pork chop and hadn't brought it out yet. Our server came out and kindly told me the news and said they were making a fresh one. I appreciated the proactive notice and thought that showed a lot of care and detail. Service was excellent! The only qualms of this place are that the metal chairs scrape against the floor and it was a bit stuffy. The bartender was also slamming beer bottles into the trash, which creates a not-so-nice ambiance, especially with a $$$ kind of place. I get things are busy but little touches go a long way. They also "ran out" of the rhubarb rumor when I went to order one, because my friend's was so good. I thought that was a little strange, so skipped a second cocktail. We ran out for a quick dinner, Hubby the strict carnivore wanted a Rib eye, I planned on grilled fish. We found HT on a search. I was so ecstatic this place is NOT a dive. Reminds me of a local bar and Tavern McQuades in Long Island, NY. My dad was buddies with the owner so we frequently dined there. Nice dark wood bar, high tops, booths and tables. Very nostalgic decor. Servers quickly taking orders and serving foods. HT had fresh lima beans which was surprisingly serves to my table, instead of the Flash Fried Brussel sprouts. Hummm okayy. Each of our steaks were cooked JUST AS ORDERED. Where do they do that at?? I appreciate a pink inside steak, salt and pepper, finished with finishing butter and rested. They have a back room, which is great for large parties. The servers were all very nice and attentive. The pork slider appetizer is amazing. The strawberry jam pairs perfectly with the pork. The fried shrimp were a bit too fishy for my taste, so I would go the fried oyster route if you want fried seafood and don't like things too fishy. The pickled okra in the appetizer board had a pretty cool flavor, as did the actual pickles. You also can't go wrong with pimento cheese and Ritz crackers. The crab cake entre was pretty good, and if you like peas, the dish comes with plenty. I would definitely pass on the potato gratin. It looks really cool but unfortunately lacked flavor. I was meeting a friend for dinner and found this place with good reviews here on Yelp. Oh my, what a treat! I started with the delicious Caesar salad, great croutons! The craft cocktails were lovely, the waitress was very knowledgeable on choices. I had the shrimp and grits. A bit on the salty side, but so very good. We shared the soft shell appetizer. Wow. What a treat and their own hot sauce is excellent. Other half had the pork chop. It looked amazing and it vanished. Shared a perfect peach cobbler for dessert. Harper's Table is an incredible find. We both had the Windhaven Farm's burgers with fry's, along with a side of his spicy spinach. Four flavors exploded from the plate. The spinach was prepared perfectly. Still bright green with garlic, butter, and his secret spicy sauce. One of the best preparations I've ever sampled. The burgers were broiled to a perfect medium rare. The tastes exploded from the bun. The fries were perfectly crisp. Not mushy as so many are served. The burger and fries came with a shallot and mayonnaise mix. I loved this sauce on my fries and burger. I don't even like mayonnaise, yet this was perfect. Harper's wine selection may be small, but it's thoughtfully selected. The hostess asked if we had reservations. We asked to sit at the bar. Within 20minutes the restaurant was packed. So very very disappointed. They lost my Valentine's Day reservation and did not make any attempt to fit me in, even though I had a confirmation and zero apology. So we had to go the day before. Sat right by the door on a cold night tho many tables were open away from the door Drink was overpriced and tasted like a yankee candle . The bartender made old fashioned incorrectly. Caesar salad had no taste and the croutons were stale, Pork chop arrived terribly undercooked and the recooked one arrived much later after my husband was already done with his meal.
