Came here for brunch and was seated pretty much immediately, so no complaints there! The space is cute, and I really liked the decor. They also had an old black-and-white movie playing, which I thought was a fun touch and definitely added to the vibe. Our table was a little... cozy. Lol. The tables and chairs behind us and in front of us were REALLY close together, so there wasn't much room to move around. We made it work, but definitely felt like we were dining with everyone around us. I ordered the Southern Fried Bowl with fried steak. It was okay. Nothing bad, but also nothing that really stuck with me. It was one of those meals where I finished it and thought, "Yep, that was food." My biggest disappointment was the coffee situation. They don't have any flavored or seasonal coffee lattes, which feels like a missed opportunity for a brunch spot. BUT they do have alcoholic coffee drinks... so apparently my options are either black coffee or coffee with a hangover. We visited MOD Olive while spending the day exploring Suffolk and thought it looked like a fun place to try. The restaurant has a cool retro 1970s vibe with vintage colors, an old cigarette machine, and Bewitched playing on the TV, which made for a unique atmosphere. Unfortunately, the experience was a little inconsistent. We arrived with a party of four but were seated at a table with only three chairs. When we pointed it out, the host didn't seem to realize the problem at first, which was an odd start to the meal. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. She let us know they were out of the home fries and another menu item before we ordered, which wasn't a big issue. However, it took close to 40 minutes for our food to arrive. My son ordered a burger that was advertised with fried mac and cheese on top, but when it came out, the mac and cheese was missing. Only after we asked were we told they had run out. It would have been helpful to know that before we ordered. The server apologized and offered to make something else, but it would have taken another 30 minutes, so we decided to keep the burger as it was. She ended up removing it from the bill entirely, which we appreciated. We also tipped her based on the original total because she handled the situation well. The food was good. I enjoyed my grilled chicken sandwich with pear, Brie, and honey, and my husband liked his French dip. That said, we felt the prices were on the high side for the overall experience, especially considering the long wait, unavailable menu items, and other service issues. Overall, MOD Olive has a fun concept and an interesting menu, but the restaurant could have been cleaner, communication could have been better, and the value didn't quite match the price. We'd be willing to give it another try in the future, but we're hoping for a more polished experience next time. read more

If you know Suffolk then you're familiar with the Plaid Turnip. Mod is the Turnips spinoff in the building they used to inhabit. Still some of the same Turnip faves you know with a little more quirk. I came specifically while back visiting Suffolk for the Fried Green Tomatoes and was not disappointed. Lightly breaded, tender, served w feta and balsamic. Exactly like momma made. We also had the pork belly biscuit platter and there was enough food for 3-4 people. I'm not mad about the leftovers. The pork was tender, flavorful, and exactly as it should be. Those big fluffy buttery biscuits reminded me to go for a run so I can eat the leftovers. We had ours with a side of waffle fries. Crispy, delicious, perfect diner fries. Traveling home from vacation in Sandbridge, VA, I thought that it would be nice to go off of my main path and stop in quaint downtown Suffolk for lunch. My wife and I arrived at The Mod Olive (formerly The Plaid Turnip) at post-peak lunch time on a Saturday. We were told by the host that the wait would be 10 min. Looking across the restaurant it wasn't crowded, a bunch of tables were empty. The decor was retro 70's and earlier. There are a lot of cool artifacts on display. A cool feature was the original Star Trek playing in a loop on the tv in the bar area. We waited for 20 min before we asked if we could be seated. Finally, after 30 min of waiting we were seated and given one menu. I now know what it is like to be invisible, we finally were acknowledged and served water after 5 minutes of servers passing by without even a look or wave. We already committed a good deal of time so we placed our orders with the friendly server. During the time that we waited, we couldn't help but notice that the restaurant was far from clean. Cobwebs on most of the decorations and the tables were rustic with chipped paint, and sticky. The host and bus-person used the same rag to wipe multiple tables off and replaced the same rag on the top of the host station(without rinsing). The fish tank in the bar area was in desperate need of a cleaning. The Philly Cheesesteak sub was on the greasy side, but had great flavor. Broccoli was fresh and cooked properly. The chicken avacado sandwich had great flavor, the beans were from a can, soft and super salty. The Mod Olive has a lot of potential, but it needs a good cleaning from top to bottom along with staff training and updated sanitation procedures. I will choose a different place next time I visit Suffolk. read more

We ended up at The Mod Olive-formerly known as the Plaid Turnip. I loved the ambience and our seat was a half booth with two chairs big enough for 4 or maybe 5 and it was nice. This place is a mid-century hoot on the main drag in Suffolk. There's quite an extensive menu of sandwiches and other casual fare that's nothing completely new, but they generally add a little twist or distinctive flourish. The portions are enormous and the prices are more than reasonable. The sweet potato fries are terrific. There's also an extensive list of (mostly retro and sweet) cocktails that's fun to narrow down to a selection. The bartender was pleasant and efficient. We've dined at Mod Olive about four times in the last five months so this is not a one-and-done review. Parking is convenient if you know how to access the lot (pull in to the driveway one building away to the north and drive around the old bank building .) The decor is like stepping back into the 50's. We're usually seated promptly but there is a comfortable waiting area if they are busy. They have two menus and change them out at 3 p.m. though many of the favorites are available all day. We've thoroughly enjoyed the generous serving of fish and chips, the humongous burgers (an 8 oz . mound of meat), the superb grilled chicken breast with gorgonzola cream sauce and sun dried tomatoes, and the Waldorf salad. They have a bespoke cocktail menu that changes monthly and a selection of craft beers on tap - you have to refer to their website to see the beer menu. We never have room for dessert and usually leave with enough food for another meal. While service is always friendly, it takes a little longer than most for the food to be delivered. (I'm told that the kitchen is on the small side.) read more

While I wait for my food, i get to enjoy the brick with framed wood and metal art, along with various figurines and arty shingles hanging from the ceilings. It's noon and I can tell patrons are here from work because they're all talking about work in khakis and polos. Still a bunch of tables for families and people like me who don't want to sit at the bar. I ordered : *The Greek Wings - taste like what they are. Served with a lemon glaze and what tastes like a scratch tzatziki sauce and pickled onions. They're different and Fun to try but I'm not stuck on them. *Poutine Fries- a first for me but not the last. Glad I was finally able to give it a try. I arrived in Suffolk to visit my daughter in law and she said that this was the spot for brunch and I would love it. She was correct, upon arriving the restaurant has a 70's, retro vibe with eclectic decor from that era. There's a full bar with seating, nostalgic movies from the 60's and 70's playing, and the cutest art work displayed. I opted for the veggie omelet with two eggs, with a side of blueberries, and a bagel with cream cheese. The omelette was tasteful, the bagel could have been more crisp and less butter, and the blueberries were not as fresh but, being that they aren't in season is why. Lastly, we had the champagne screw which consists of vodka, orange juice, and champagne. It was a bit strong but delicious, a different taste from my usual mimosa with oj and champagne. Was invited out here for a brief lunch with some friends. We've passed by this place a few times before but never stopped in. It looked smaller on the outside but is actually pretty big inside. I had a Caesar salad, and the lettuce was huge in a great way! It was delicious, nice and fresh! Some of the people in the group had soups and pot pies. They enjoyed that as well and said they come all the time. Then there's the cakes! Some got the chocolate cake and some of us the carrot cake. The pieces were HUGE and anddddd they were delicious! You ever get a huge slice, and you're all excited, then it tastes like cardboard or chalk? Well, that wasn't the case here. We're definitely going back to "make sure" they always taste that good! A restaurant runs out of food - during restaurant week. Featured items on a menu that is still circulating, but you don't have most of the items. This was very disheartening. My mother and I visited this restaurant last Friday with hopes of trying items from the restaurant week menu. We were presented with the full menu... we were ready to order within minutes, but was told our choices were no longer available. Bummer! Items from the starter section - out Items from the entrees - out Sheesh - not sure why there is not an alternative, but because we were sad, we decided to dine elsewhere. We walked in - and stood at the counter for over a minute - no greeting - no acknowledgement. A guest from the bar happened to finish, so two seats next to each other became available, so we opted to sit at the bar with hopes of getting greeting sooner than later. Another 30 seconds went by and the bartender, Davena, I believe - she waited on us. She was the bearer of bad news of the items the restaurant ran out of. The excuse was because of the rush. Nevertheless. We may return, but this was a big disappointment. Parking - good luck with that. We found parking on the street, but not sure if there is a special parking lot nearby. I was very disappointed. First of all, the service was extremely poor. We were seated in a corner, and I think we were mostly out of mind. We waited several minutes once ready to order, drinks were not refilled, food prep was super slow (probably 30 mins), and again we waited several minutes for the check. As for the food, portions were very generous, and flavors were pretty good. However, the bread on the Mac Attack sandwich was excessive and really soggy - I couldn't eat it. The waffle fries were very good. Lastly, the place was generally dirty. There are eclectic decorations throughout, and not a one without a cob web or two on it. We were seated in a corner along a brick wall. There was a large spider in the corner and cob webs on the brick. I must say the food here is absolutely delicious. Absolutely delicious. We had the chicken and waffles and ate every bite. My husband and daughter both loved it. The hash browns on the side are cheesy and delicious. The service was just okay. Our waiter forgot to put in a side my husband had ordered and by the time he came back to the table we had finished eating and we're ready for the check. Also, we sat near the window and at any given time there were no less than 5 flies. Seriously it was uncomfortable and I know there isn't much they can do about them however it's the second time we've gone and it's continuously flies. Just be prepared. The place as an eccentric old school diner/restaurant and old reruns are playing on the projector screen. Bugs bunny, Yosemite Sam and Fog horn Leg Horn cartoons were playing today. Last time was Gilighans Island. Food was fantastic from the salad to the Chicken AVO Clubo sandwich I had with a side salad. One person ordered the chicken pot pie, which was served in a nice succulent sauce with chicken and vegetables and pastries on top. The other person ordered homemade chicken salad sandwich was huge with old bay homemade chips. The third person ordered chicken fried steak with green beans portions are great food was again Very very tasty. If you're in the Suffolk area I would definitely try this place. I had a fabulous Sunday brunch on their patio with a friend this last week, and truly enjoyed the food, the location, the whole feel of the eatery, and our wonderful waitress Gracie! The menu had a ton of options, and SO many things sounded SO appetizing that it was truly hard to pick just one meal! However, we narrowed it down to the biscuits and gravy as well as fried chicken and waffles both meals coming with a side. They had great options for sides also, and we went with fresh fruit, and hash brown casserole. I don't think you could really go wrong here, and we definitely enjoyed all that we ate! We walked in for lunch, requested a table for two, & was told by the young man that it would be a 10 minute wait. Okay. When we mentioned that there were several open tables (7), he told us that they had a large party of 17 in the rear of the restaurant, who was already seated. Several couples entered the restaurant after us and were told the exact same thing until he offered bar seating to some of the others. As a result, at least one couple left the restaurant. After 20 minutes, we inquired and were finally seated after a 25 minute wait. (Those 7 tables were still open and unoccupied.) We were provided with one menu & waited another 10 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge us and take our orders. She was very pleasant and probably overworked. While we were seated, we had plenty of time to observe the goings on of the restaurant in general: the two young men tasked with hosting and busing tables seemed unsure of themselves and exactly what they should be doing. The one young man was dressed very shabbily & appeared quite dirty. Both young men used the same rag/cloth to clean off each and every table without rinsing or washing in between and when finished placed it on the host table to be used over and over again. There was no sanitizer or detergent used. This practice was absolutely disgusting! The decor was described as retro, but retro does not mean unkept. Clean is not a word I would use to describe this place. The food was tasty & plentiful. My husband's broccoli was fresh while my green beans appeared to have been canned & tasted quite salty. We may have ordered cocktails, if we had been seated promptly, but decided we did not want to spend any more time than necessary there as we were passing through on our way home. Unfortunately, we'll probably look elsewhere in the future. With some improvements in service and cleanliness, there were enough varied items on the menu to make it a potentially great place. read more

I feel like this place is hit or miss when you go there. I've gone and had the best experiences and I've gone and had the worst experiences lol. Same goes for the food, Their fried mac & cheese ball is out of this world if it's available. There pot pie when i got it was vinegar based if you like vinegar then that's the way to go personally not a fan. It's a very beautiful restaurant on the inside very artsy and creative looking. I ate them as-is because we had already waited over 20 minutes. The flavor was good and my wife enjoyed hers too. The decor is interesting. The website describes it as a vintage vibe with eclectic menu. It is apparent they tried to harken back to the 70's with the lighting, shelving and such.
