Hate to downgrade this 5 star but place has gone downhill on my past couple of visits. Food and especially service are definitely not what they used to be. Tonight, the entire staff was solemn and completely disinterested in patrons. My family and I moved to Suffolk 2 1/2 years ago and I can't believe this is our first time discovering this hidden gem! My daughter and I enjoyed breakfast this morning. We were greeted with a smile and received great customer service! Our waitress, Charity, went over some of her favorites and she didn't steer us wrong. The food was delish! I haven't had a Monte Cristo sandwich since Bennigan's so I thought I would give it a try! Great choice...so darn good. My daughter ordered the southern fried chicken bowl! This bowl was made with some TLC! The bowl was so good; I ordered my mom one to go! You will definitely get your bang for your buck. A lot of food with reasonable prices! We just stopped in last night for dinner. We stood at the door waiting to be given a tablef with only FOUR people in the place. Even the cook watched us while playing with his make-shift curtain on the door. Finally, we were seating way in the back by the dessert area and we weren't even given an option of where we would like to sit in a place that had 4 booths and several tables. But, we weren't in a hurry. Our server was spot in and attentive. Don't remember her name but she was very nice. Loved the eclectic designs. Didn't see any bugs or cobwebs. We both ordered a specialty drink. Whoever made them overpoured them and they weren't balanced. So, if you want to get your money's worth on a $10 drink get the person who was at the bar because you get two drinks in your glass for the price of one. Not sure why the whipped cream on my Pumpkin White Russion didn't melt, but I didn't taste any pumpkin in it at all. Hubby Got the $9 Bourbon smash which was never strained and since he loves bourbon, he also was surprised he got a two for one. That said, hubby ordered the Bouguione (sp) and he said it was fine. I ordered the Hungarian Beef Stroganoff that I've had there twice before and was looking forward to a warm and comfy food experience again and getting lit. But, that wasn't the case. Our portions were huge which happily my hubby devoured. I on the other hand thought that perhaps they were getting rid of the leftovers that no one ate up to the point and it was all on my plate. The meat was chewy, but I figured I'd take it home for hubby the next day. Since I'm a Hungarian dumpling eater from way back I more enjoy the sauce which should be an onion gravy mixed with sour cream. Did I say should? Well, this looked like the same dark sauce like what my hubby ate. It was NOT good. It tasted old and if there was any sour cream in there, I'd be amazed. I also got a side of mashed potatoes and so did hubby. Now, my hubby hates, loathes and any other verbs you can find toward instant potatoes . Anyway, I grew up on TV dinners so I don't mind and THESE were INSTANT potatoes which a couple of real potatoes were mashed in to make it appear like real potatoes. So, I now know, as I've tested before, hubby doesn't know the differece unless he's watching them be made. I don't like chunks in my mashed potatoes so, these were as awful so I didn't eat them either. So, I decided to bring all my leftovers back for hubby (that's what they're good for, right?), until I got to the car and then it hit. Stomach not feeling well all the way back home. We stopped at a Food Lion and I ran to the bathroom. I was sicker than a dog. So, I knew the meal did me in. We went home and I visited the bathroom another time and then unpleasantly slept all night. Since someone else had the same experience, recently, I decided to write about the experience versus call. We should ALL take a look at the kitchen where our food is being made. I'm not sure we'd eat at many places, but we won't be going back to this place for food, BUT we'll go back for drinks. I guess I'll have to go back to making my own Beef Stroganoff. Hubby tried a bit of the dinner and said there was clearly a difference from the last time and he's not going to eat any of it - $20 down the tubes. So, for $73 for the night for two meals, two drinks, which was a bit pricey for getting sick, I give it two stars. Any of you can take the chance and I'm sure for lunches, it appears here, that those are the focus and not the dinner guests. It's a small joint. Booths are starting to age with rips and stains, but the service for this particular evening - other than the hostess who met us at the door, our server was outstanding. Gave us as much attention as any high-class restaurant. I don't know her name, darn it, but she was a black-woman who was pretty tall with curly hair. read more

The restaurant is a combination of Mod Olive and The Plaid Turnip while the Turnip is being remodeled. The place is well kept and the customer service is prompt and pleasant. The omelette is probably the best I've eaten in the 757. The meat is was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The home fries were seasoned as well, the pancake was a little light but with everything, I left filled. The only issue was the glass of Apple juice I ordered, it wasn't cold, other than that, my experience was great. So great I came back two days later for the same meal again. read more

So they didn't have a Yelp page so I decided to add one so I can share my thoughts. I first heard of this place from my friend who recently discovered it as she was exploring Downtown Suffolk. I honestly had no idea there was so much in downtown to see so I'll have to take some more trips here. We went for "happy hour", which they technically don't have BUT their cocktails are always $5 so we treated it as such. We both had a Pink Lady. While the drink was too strong for me (the first few sips... it started going down better!) my friend enjoyed it! I believe she also had a Gin Ricky? Which she loved as well. I'll have to go again when I have a designated driver so I can try more drinks She ordered the Gorgonzola waffle fries, which was the perfect heavy appetizer to help us get through our strong drinks. The Gorgonzola was HEAVYYYY but super tasty! I think there was even some sun-dried tomatoes with the cheese and it was so amazing! I thought they were super great so I'd definitely get this again. I also was craving an apple pie of sorts so I got the apple cobbler ala mode. For someone who doesn't usually do apple cobblers, it was pretty good. I think I was mixing up the textures because I was thinking more of a pie crust with the ice cream but this one felt more like a cake texture? Or like a thick pound cake texture? OMG I love this place so much. I moved here about 6 weeks ago and have probably been here 3 times. I love the sides, especially the Waldorf salad, ambrosia, and Mediterranean pasta salad! The burgers are very thick and delicious. The beef stroganoff was enough to feed a whole family LOL! Shrimp was good. I was concerned the bread wouldn't be soft but it was. The tuna salad was pedestrian and disappointing. The portion was very adequate. The fruit salad was the kind of monochromatic stuff we used to get in grade school. Everything looked clean and tidy. The noise was minimal at around 1:30p Food was delivered in a short time. We were so pleasantly surprised!!! The menu variety took us back to our childhoods as well as the overall aesthetic!!! We started off with Poutine...It was a meal!!! Michael had Beef Bourguignon and I had Chicken Parmesan!!!! A small village could have eaten all the food we got. The Mod Olive is a treasure that the townies know about and if you know you know. The food and service is consistently enjoyable. That's what keeps people going back You can definitely catch the biggest crowds here on Sundays. Pushing the usual wait time back 20 mins or so. The food is always good! I get something different every time I go. But ya girl loves French toast! Their French toast is definitely top tier & doesn't esnt disappoint ever! The grits are made the southern way...THICK & with salt not sugar! (Love that for them) My veg heads - I was told their home fries are made with oil that contains meat. I'd recommend the tater tots as a substitute. But they do have the Impossible sausage & for that we are grateful! Oh and you can never go wrong with a Mimosa flight! read more

Went to this establishment with my family this past Saturday. It was highly recommended and had an interesting menu. All of us were looking forward to having lunch there. When we arrived it was full and we waited around 30 minutes to get seated. When we were finally seated it took over 10 minutes for our waitress to attend us. When she finally attended us, two other tables that were seated after us and had already received their drinks and ordered their meals. The waitress seemed harried and a bit upset. She apologized and blamed the hostess for not knowing her tables were seated. We wanted to order immediately since we had waited for a while, but she only took our drink orders since she didn't have her note pad on her. When she brought us our drinks about 5-7 minutes later we were finally able to order. We then waited over 20 minutes before the waiter appeared again to tell us that she was sorry for the delay, but that she couldn't guarantee when our food would cone out. She said a large party's order was ahead of us and that she couldn't guarantee that we would get are order even within 30min. Eventually the manager came over and apologized for the delay, but could also not tell us when we would receive our food. Even the appetizers would take over 30 minutes. We pointed to the two other tables that were seated after us that were happily eating the meals and she had no explanation for it. Since we had to go to a previously scheduled event, we all decided to leave without eating. This culinary adventure basically wasted 1.5 hours of our life and without any food. This review is only about the poor service and management of Mod Olive. I cannot comment on the quality of the food. The dishes we observed from the tables around us looked good and customers seemed to enjoy them. The ambiance was also pretty good. read more

Visited here for brunch. I ordered the Upstream, which is a smoked salmon eggs benedict with a side of grits. The salmon was delicious and fresh, it was sandwiched in between a nice layer of cream cheese and poached eggs on top. All sitting on a toasted muffin, then sprinkled with cappers and some pickled red pinions. The hollandaise sauce was perfect. The grits were marvelously seasoned and cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend. The rest of the menu contains lunch items that, when read made my mouth water. Will be coming back again to try the rest of the menu. Had a delicious but strong lavender drink forgot the name. Then the giant mac and cheese sandwich and wow I could barely finish this thing it was very good but very large. My husband and I just left this establishment after having a Sunday lunch. Our second time in, and did not disappoint. I'm gluten free and was able to find something to enjoy. Portions are generous, and menu is creative. I ordered shrimp and grits, and he got grilled Caesar with French onion soup. It was very busy, and appeared to be well staffed. I'm hanging out in Suffolk at my sisters house while she is on vacation. She has two dogs and two cats and I brought along my dog. I am four days in and decided to check out this cute town for lunch. I found The Mod Olive on Yelp and decided to check it out. I found parking nearly behind the building but not behind the bank (towing enforced). There was a large party of ladies (12 or so) not trying to respect other customers by their noise but Charles, maybe the busboy, took my order, Greek Wings with Lemon and Feta, don't have them. Sichuan Wings don't have them....Ruben stuffed potato skins....don't have them. I am gluten free, Charles said his mother is too and he knows all about it. I settled on the mushroom, spinach, cheese sandwich without any bread and the peas and potato side dish. During the ordering stage another single diner sat at the table across from me. My meal was delivered at an acceptable wait time. The mushroom dish was salty, so was the peas/potatoes. Hey, I'm 65 and limit my sugar and salt intake. It was probably more salty to me than it would be to you. Perhaps Covid is preventing the salt and pepper container from being on the table but hey,,,,this is too salty and is wreaking havoc on my tongue. Oh, that person at the table still has not been approached to put in her order. The peas and potatoes were delicious but salty. I asked Charles to asked if flour was used in the sauce. Yes, indeed, it was. Glad I didn't eat much. It was taken off my bill and back to the kitchen. I asked Charles to get someone to take care of the person across from me and he did. I tipped him well but he should have known about the flour in that side dish. I have four more days here. Will go exploring again. read more

Horrible very disappointed my mother and I both had to send our food back, my steak was undercooked and my mothers wings tasted old or freezer burn and the second batch was not any better and the 2nd dish i ordered with chorizo and egg the chorizo tasted old and I chewed into an egg shell. Went to the Mod Olive Plaid Turnip today to give it another try. We use to go to the original Plaid Turnip when it first opened and it was fantastic. Then it moved and they opened Mod Olive. New owners combined the two restaurants back in the original building. The dropped some of my favorite dishes from the menu. Went back today and decided on their chicken salad plate with potato salad and pasta salad. In the past you would get some nice fruit, deviled eggs and cucumber slices included. Chicken salad was still good but the sides were not. Potato salad had unpeeled potato hunks not diced potatoes and the sauce was bad. Pasta salad had a terrible after taste. Instead of a couple cucumber slices had one slice quartered. Two unripe strawberries for its fruit. Service was slow and waitress very cold. My last time to eat at what was one of my favorite restaurants. The 50+ mile roundtrip for bad food and service is too much. read more

I said Hello back & asked where they had come from and they spoke highly of the Mod Olive, at that point my search stopped and I knew exactly where my next meal would be. Upon entrance I was greeted for a table but opted to sit at the bar so I could have a view of the Beautiful Fish tank. The Springtime sippers (cocktail menu) was full of variety. Gin is not my usual drink of choice but I can never pass up a drink with lavender so I opted for the "Lavender Bees Knees" it was the best Gin drink I have ever had! When it came to the food I wanted something quick so I chose to have a burger. It was a hard choice between Gargonzola the Gargonzola Bacon Burger and the California. But opted for the Gargonzola Bacon Burger well done with sweet potato tater tots. The tater tots were not my cup of tea so I switched them for the white cheddar mac & cheese but it also was nothing to write home about it was some bow tie pasta with watered down cheese. But the Burger & Drink was good so I gave them 4 because the service & drinks were really good & hopefully I can try some of their sides on a return visit & I can also try some desert. read more

What a great little spot in downtown Suffolk! We were literally just throwing the dice and seeing what we could find and here we are. This place is super cool. The decor is so nostalgic. It's very 80's with a meet George Jetson vibe. It kinda feels like Rosie might come out to serve you some pie. Like another reviewer mentioned there isn't an established happy hour but all of the drinks are basically $5, so SCORE. The menu is very diverse. They have a page full of sandwiches, a page full of appetizers and salads.....appetizers include poutine.....c'mon guys WHO HAS POUTINE SOUTH OF THE CANADIAN BORDER? Yeah that's right, Suffolk does (imagine me dropping a mic and walking away). Ok back to the review *clears throat* The dinner selection includes meatloaf, short ribs, seafood, pastas, stroganoff, chop suey.....I mean very diverse. From experience when you come across a restaurant with a diverse menu, you tend to think that things may not be that good, however I can say that our choices were great. I had the fresh catch which varies. For this visit it was salmon, scallops and asparagus. Salmon and scallops were cooked fantastic. Not overcooked it's rubbery at all. The hubs had the short ribs, very luscious fall of the bone looking and the kid had the chicken avo clubo. Oh wait - we did have the poutine for an appetizer - how could I forget that! Overall, 12/10 definitely recommend and pro tip GO HUNGRY because you get so much food for what you pay. read more

I was refused service today. The hostess refused to put us on the waiting list, or seat us at the bar. My wife and I were literally told to leave by the hostess. My wife and I are an interracial couple, and I expect that kind of treatment if I'm in the Deep South, but to be told to leave and refused service in Suffolk, is just deplorable. read more
