Everything is always wonderful! Such huge portions that are easily shareable and we love this place!

Disclaimer: I reverse a 5 star for places I would fly my wife to just for dinner. Country, down home, family food with a modern twist! Solid 3.5. Excellent home town restaurant. Yes, I recommend but just don't recommend driving over 45 minutes to. Good food, EXCELLENT PRICES, huge portions (recommend sharing). Menu is diverse. Service was good for teen staffing. I ordered for a potential fail (Meatloaf Wellington) but enjoyed my dinner. If I'm doing business out here again I will stop in, hopefully for brunch. read more

The atmosphere is welcoming, music is great, service was wonderful and kind, and THE FOOD!!! Ordered avocado bruschetta, the grilled Caesar salad and the brunch burger. Every bite was scrumptious. This place is lovely in every way. We were traveling from Norfolk to Columbia , SC and stumbled upon it after balking at our intended destination across the street (due to their brashly displayed bigotry). We'll be traveling back and forth for the next few months and can't wait to return as often as possible. read more

Quantity rules over quality here. My Cobb salad had no avocado, and the sweet corn did not make up for it. The turkey chunks were tasteless other than vaguely salty. Everything was fresh; I asked for a 2nd bowl so I could mix the ingredients. Took the remainder home and could barely close the box. I'll use my own tasty salad dressing made with wine vinegar and olive oil and I'll add avocado. Oh, and I'll pick the turkey out since it was so meh. read more

Food is ok. better than some considering that it's Suffolk, most other cities it wouldn't be much of a place. Service isn't very good. Meal arrived incomplete with no mention of making it right, and with a "customers suck" vibe, it is definitely a place you don't ask for your order to be correct. This restaurant has two names the Plaid Turnip but it a great little restaurant love the 50s/60s vibe.

The food is delicious. The customer service is awesome. My only complaint is that I wish they had more beverage (alcohol) options.

Food was good although it was quite slow in getting to the table. Our server was GraceAnn and she is awesome!!!

We drove a long way to visit because once a year on my birthday I pick somewhere unusual and interesting and we make a big night of it. We arrived at opening because we had the grandkids and we try not to suffer a restaurant with pre schoolers during peak hours. Maybe 4pm is too early and the waitress wasnt awake yet but her slow service and piss poor demeanor really soured the whole evening. She took 2 stars off this rating. The food was tasty and there were so many nostalgic dishes on the menu. The decor is eye candy and really kitsch. We might go back someday but probably wont. read more

My partner and I came for brunch and put our name down for a 20 minute wait. We walked back to the car to grab his phone because it was his number we gave to get a call when our table would be ready. We sat in the car for about the 20 minutes -- no call, so we walked back to see other guests getting seated first. About 4 other names were written down in the book AFTER ours, and their names were crossed out. We got seated after a WALK-IN guest. Very incompetent of the host. They need to do better. Bad first impression. Y'all were saved by the server's hospitality. The food was mediocre at best. Eggs were undercooked and overpowered by cheese. Home fries -- were not home fries. They were barely smashed over onions. Honey pulled pork sandwich was gamey and unseasoned. The table we were sat at was slippery, I could barely keep my plate stable while trying to cut my waffles, my chicken practically flew off my plate. Never coming back again. read more

I can't say enough about this place....I found my new Suffolk restaurant! I've been running through the menu for the last two months, at least once or twice a week and decided it was time to share my experience. The décor is very impressive with a 1960's theme. There you can always catch Lost in Space, Jetsons, The Outer limits, Twilight Zone or some other 60's classic playing on their televisions or projected on the wall. Service is always 5 star, the staff makes recommendations, know their menu well and always willing to meet your needs. So far I have tried Greek wings with lemon and feta cheese, Relish tray, stuffed potato skins with chili, cheddar and candied jalapenos & the Rueben-style with corned beef sauerkraut, teriyaki pork skewers on grilled pineapple, house wedge salad, Caesar salad, classic wedge salad, grilled entrée salad with sundried tomatoes, shrimp scampi with asparagus pasta and tomatoes, Steak from what's on the grill, Haddock from the Fresh catch of the day, win-win chicken din, big fat Greek Sammie, sausage and peppers sub, ambrosia salad, red skin potato salad, waffle fries, strawberry short pancakes and the German chocolate coconut cupcake. Everything I have tried was 100% freshly made, plentiful and worth the value! I don't want to make this review any longer, just look at the photos I posted. The place is wonderful, they really make you feel welcome! I use to travel 50 + miles for this quality of meal, now I only have to drive 7 miles. I might go there tomorrow. read more

Friends who live near took us to The Mod Olive tonight! It was amazing! We had the Clam and Italian Angel hair pasta, Mahi Mahi, Beef Bourguignon & Pulled Pork Shepherds Pie plus drinks! I really wanted to love this place. The vintage decor had a really funky vibe. The waitress was spectacular, attentive and polite. Critique is that the menu is way too long. Do a small amount of things and do them well. The food left a lot to be desired. My daughter had dumpling soup and it arrived with thick soup running over the sides. It was lukewarm and cold in the middle. I got french onion soup, or at least some version of it. The broth was rather like a thick gravy type consistency rather than a consommé, flavor was also not great. I like the ideas behind this place, but the menu and flavors need some work. read more

"THE MOD OLIVE" SAY THAT three times because you will NOT want to forget it. We walked in and just looked around at the marvelous '70s ('60s?) Decor. We could have left then and left rave reviews. Two old movies playing up front the cutest sofas and star trek playing in the back. The menu is eclectic and the descriptions so tantalizing you want one of each. So the FOOD is Uber amazing. Everything we ordered fabulous (OK OK the bow tie Mac n cheese not so much) Reuben melt on marble rye. Beautiful make you cry portions, tasty corned beef, juicy and flavorful. Oh oh the Poutine absolutely life changing. Went to a place in Williamsburg called Amber Ox House and that was gross concoction compared to this beauty. See picture. In town for a wedding. Tried for breakfast. What a pleasant surprise. Had the Benedict with salmon, my partner had the Chorizo bowl. Both were equally awesome!!! Plan on going back today before heading out. Would highly recommend. Hope we get the same waitress! read more

The waitress was awesome and the food was pretty good, the owner on the other hand was heard/seen having a temper tantrum and being rude to the staff. Gave props for them keeping calm but if your going to have your kitchen be open for others to see/hear, I would maybe take a walk to calm down. Food portions are humongous. They also offer a variety on the menu. Excellent tuna and chicken salad. Deserts are the best.

We went last night and was disappointed. I originally ordered the clams/Italian sausage over linguine. Then was told they were out of clams, did I want shrimp? I was afraid the shrimp would be the little rubbery cocktail shrimp, so I declined and ordered the beef stroganoff. Which is usually good. Not last night. It tasted old and very little beef. The wife ordered string beans (usually good) and the steak special. Steak was grizzly and the beans were straight from a can. Not doctored up or seasoned. We both ordered desserts, which we normally don't, and they were so-so. The waiter had a tendency to disappear and didn't bring a steak knife for the steak. Which made us wait for him to show up. They weren't busy. The restaurant was hot, so I suspect AC problems, but no explanation on why. Today, both me and my wife have upset stomach's. Since we didn't eat the same, we suspect something artificial in the desserts!! This place has been good in the past, but it may be awhile before I go back. read more

My husband, daughter, daughter-in-law, grandbaby and I ate here for dinner Saturday, April 29th. 3:30am Sunday morning my husband started with severe food poisoning along with a fever of almost 102!! He's a heart/kidney transplant with no immune system and no way for his body to fight this off and any temp over 100.4 has me taking him to the hospital. We stayed there for 4 days. We know it was food poisoning because my daughter and I felt nauseous and my daughter-in-law was sick for 2 days, missing a day of work. We narrowed it down to the mashed potatoes. The only thing we all had on our plates that was the same. Thank god the baby didn't get sick too. Thursday, May 4th after we got out of the hospital I stopped by the restaurant to tell them. I spoke to the manager after being told the owner wasn't in. I asked to leave my name and number for the owner, "just in case" since the manager didn't offer to take it. I wasn't going to post this because I was hoping the owner would've called to offer an apology but almost 5 days later nothing! Needless to say we will NOT be eating here ever again. I would've put zero stars but don't believe that's an option. read more

Wonderful restaurant is Surprising Suffolk. Fairly new, but good food and very large portions. Varied menu, friendly staff and patrons. Moderate prices, but really cheap considering the portions. Worth the drive (and tolls) from the tidewater. read more
