Harper's Table is a do-not-miss experience for anyone visiting Downtown Suffolk (or Hampton Roads, for that matter). Since opening its doors in 2012 (in the stylishly revitalized historic space downtown), Harper's has been our family's go-to restaurant for celebrating special occasions. Recently, my husband and I hosted a private dinner celebrating my sister's upcoming wedding at Harper's Table, and it was a party we (and our guests) will never forget! Harper and his team went above and beyond to plan the most exquisite, unique, bountiful and down-right delicious meal any of us could ever have dreamed up! Most impressively, Harper was able to thoughtfully craft dishes to accommodate one guest's very complex food allergy with precision and creativity. I can't recommend Harper's Table highly enough! Pretty good for it to be my first time! My babe has dined here before and recommended we have dinner here during Suffolk's restaurant week. The restaurant is located in Suffolk's historic area of the city, downtown if you will. I remember driving around and saying, "I love this part of the city" - there are shops up down the street as well as some of the main office buildings in Suffolk (City Hall for example). Other than the shops and buildings, you will also find landmarks and restaurants as well. We arrived about 5 pm or perhaps a little later. Nevertheless, we were in the midst of happy hour as well as restaurant week (this past Summer). I was able to get glasses of wine at happy hour pricing. I cannot recall our waitress name, but she was most helpful in helping me choose a wine to try and helped me choose my meal. My babe highly suggested the pork belly biscuit... it was delicious! I didn't think I would like it, but truth be told I wanted another one. I think the jelly on the belly definitely gave the sandwich life! Our main course was yummy as well. Overall, our experience was a great one. I love the low lighting and booth seating. After dinner, you can decide to walk up and down the block to enjoy the sites and shops (not sure if they stay open late) and perhaps walk off some calories before heading home. Worth. Every. Penny. I am not sure there's much more to say. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious. The flounder was so fresh it wasn't fishy. The ambiance was very nice. The wait staff was fantastic, our waitress, Raechelle, was attentive, friendly, and explained any questions we had without looking at us like we were fools. We rarely get dessert or appetizers but we decided on the apple crisp this time, and we were not disappointed, served piping hot with vanilla bean ice cream, it was a perfect finish to a fantastic meal. The beer was super cold and the gin and tonic was perfectly made. We think it's really nice that Chef came out at one point and visited from table to table. The local sourcing of ingredients was a very nice touch. The Foodie and The Nugget will definitely be returning for another culinary delight. read more

The food was amazing, super fresh sea food, fried shrimp appetizer, lump crab cakes for the entree, and peach crumble with ice cream for dessert. Everything was so refreshing, I was genuinely impressed because is hard to find a restaurant with good food these days. The service was also great, the waiters were very tentative. During my first visit I had the pork belly biscuits (I will dream about those until my next visit) fried oysters, Caesar salad, Pork Chop and Scallops. All were beyond delicious and I was so happy I was dining with people who love to share food, the portions were plentiful. On Saturday I had pork belly biscuits..yes again. Fries with an addicting shallot mayo and the BBQ ribs that were perfectly cooked and tender. Ohh and the potato au gratin! I'm visiting from New Orleans and have spent the last 14 years working in a restaurant so I definitely know tasty food. It is always worth the drive from the Grassfield area of Chesapeake to Harper's Table on Main St. in Suffolk. There is always has an upscale feel/vibe upon entering and the entire staff is delightful. Serving comfort food with a twist is their specialty. Farm to table; this is the real deal. Their scrumptious desserts are house made. Can't eat another bite? I would suggest purchasing one to go to enjoy at home the next day. Their creative cocktails are so tasty it is hard to choose which one to try first. Additionally, their liquor, wine and beer selections are "top drawer". Enjoyed a perfect New Years Eve dinner at Harper's Table. Set menu with our favorites all shared plates, from start to finish. Iceberg Wedge with a creative touch of apples and Pecans along with the usual Bleu Cheese Dressing. Porterhouse Steak was cooked perfectly with a sauce that according to Harper took an entire day and by the taste, it was incredible. A Double stuffed Baked Potato served with Creamed Spinach for the sides. Dessert was a perfect end to one of the best meals ever. Great place to enjoy in Downtown Suffolk, VA. This is our second time here and the cocktails have been amazing. The food is good overall. They change it up quit a bit so unsure what to recommends. We got the rockfish last visit and it was perfectly cooked. The rice that came with it was a perfect addition and complement the rock fish very well. We got the Fried chicken, and that was ok. I had dinner at Harper's Table last week and really loved it. I dug the whole experience. The location in downtown is really charming - downtown Suffolk is cute and quaint - it reminds me of what Eagle Rock (where I'm from) must've been like when people still lived there... we found easy street parking during a week night nearby and a short walk. Anyway, Harper's is a nice hometown place with good southern food to choose from. This is the sort of place where the menu changes as available local food changes like local produce and fresh fish. Yes, that's exactly where I want to eat. The inside is elegantly southern with a nice bar and tables and booths. The menu has enough variety for everyone to find something they want to eat. And we certainly found plenty... To start - we chose the PORK BELLY BISCUIT which is exactly what you think it is - a single pork belly biscuit with pickle for $4. I also wanted to try the GRILLED SC PEACHES which is a single sliced fresh grilled peach with homemade ricotta, country ham, pecan, honey for $8.50. My entree was the PUPPY DRUM with a pea, corn, tomato and pepper succotash salad which was very delicious and refreshing. I can't remember the exact price bc it's a seasonal item but I believe it was around $27 for my entree. My date chose the SHRIMP 'N GRITS with andouille sausage, roast peppers, chardonnay, tabasco (yum) for $25. We also did an order for the table of the HAND CUT FRIES & ROAST SHALLOT MAYONNAISE which were amazeballs for $7.50. Dinner is also served with fresh corn bread. Noms. For dessert - we love anything pot de creme so when we saw this: POTS DE CREME chocolate custard, churros, caramel it was happening. It was $8 and worth every freaking penny. OMG. I'm gonna dream about it. The custard was rich and thick - the churros were fresh and warm and crispy and the caramel was soooo good. It had a hard candy caramel, a drizzle for dipping and a whipped cream caramel. So noms. So much nom. Our waitress was very good - she paid just enough attention to us that we never really wanted for anything and she was helpful with the menu when I asked a few questions as well - but she wasn't annoying and she also didn't abandon us after the meal came or when it was time for the check. Also - their sweet tea was on point. So - all in all - great success and I'd love to come back here - a friend said their burgers are amazing so next time I'm in town - the burger it is! read more

My SO and I decided to try this place for our most recent date night. I've lived in Suffolk for about 4 years and been wanting to try this place. I somehow just got around to it--but better late than never lol. We made a reservation through their Yelp page, easy. We got here and was seated in a booth right away. Looking around, we both loved the vibe of the place! It was upscale, but not too much. Like we were comfortable in a dressier casual. It had a really cool vibe. And we enjoyed the design of the booths. The height of them made each one feel very private. Food was yummy! For appetizers we had the deviled eggs, pork belly biscuit (my fave!), and the hush puppies. We split the ribeye for our entree along with a couple of cocktails. My cocktail had pear-infused vodka and it was yummy! We got the churros with chocolate pot de creme to go. Not enough churros but lots of chocolate so we started dipping all sorts of things in the chocolate at home lol. Service was the only area that was lacking. Our waitress was super nice and very helpful when we saw her, but she was so busy that she couldn't be as attentive as she needed. She was also the bartender, making drinks for restaurant in addition to serving tables. There were a few times where we were waiting for her or looking for her. Not her fault--she just had too much. Date night!!! We put on our cleanest sweaters and went downtown for wine and to dine while celebrating not having our children with us for dinner. The food was good the drinks spectacular and the service absolutely lovely. They are farm to table and mostly local so the menu is pretty slim but includes familiar favorites. I'd come back but not with my kids the entrees are way to pricey to be smeared on the table then tossed on the floor. read more

First time here and definitely going to be a staple when we are in town. My mom got the crab and mac and cheese and she loved it . The mac and cheese is made in house including the pasta!! Y'all...when i say my dinner sent me on a journey of self-enlightenment that i wasn't ready for...it sent me. And then they had the nerve to give me the tastiest Old Fashioned to pair with it too!? I didn't wanna leave! But be warned: with great taste, comes great price, so be sure to come there around payday. We've heard nothing but positive things about Harper's Table so we figured we had to try it out for ourselves! The experience was lovely and I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for an upscale dinner in downtown Suffolk. For an appetizer, my wife and I tried the sweet cream hush puppies. They came out on a hot skillet and were delicious. They had a butter and maple syrup spread that we put on the hush puppies that really rounded out the flavor. My wife also ordered the the Arugula Caesar salad and it was was delicious. Not too creamy, not too leafy. Main course- I tried to the crispy chicken breast and my wife had a Bolognese Pasta dish. My chicken came out hot, crispy, and perfectly cooked. The side potatoes had a mustard glaze that was a bit much for me, but overall they weren't bad. The pasta that my wife had was good- the hand-cut noodles were delicious as was the meat ragu. Side dish- we ordered the fries and they were amazing! They may be some of the best French fries I have ever tried- truly a masterpiece. Light, fluffy, crispy... I don't know how they do it. Dessert- we had an ice cream sandwich with two double chocolate chip cookies and java ice cream- it was excellent! Wine- small menu but they have some great options. We chose a 2013 vintage Spanish blend and it was a perfect pairing for our meal. Service- Vivian was phenomenal!! Incredibly friendly, great recommendations and very personable. Atmosphere- modern industrial interior, pretty bar, warm lighting. A few drawbacks from making our visit 5 stars: 1. We were told that we could not sit in a booth because they were all reserved. However, at least two booths were open the entire 2 hour time frame that we were there. 2. We did not get our cornbread with the meal. It was packaged up for us when we left- luckily our server noticed that it was not brought to our table! 3. There was a roach in the bathroom. read more

We really stumbled upon this place but were happy about it cause it was incredible. To start, we had the fried oysters and the pork belly biscuit. My husband said "this is the best biscuit I've ever had" and I didn't disagree! We only ordered 1 to share but wished we ordered way more. He had the rigatoni and finished the entire meal, as an Italian man he was very happy with it! I ordered the Chesapeake bay rockfish with sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. So, last night, I had a one-night stand. Harper's Table (hT) had teased me for the past four years since it opened in downtown Suffolk. Tempted me with the rumor of their locally sourced Southern cuisine, and an upscale atmosphere to tingle one's senses, I finally succumbed to temptation. Two years ago, I had a slight taste of their Pork Belly Biscuit after picking one up to-go. hT and I became acquaintances at that point, but the chemistry was real. Last night, I had the true experience at hT. I started to get worried when the complimentary cornbread turned out to be dry and not all that great. Kind of like when that first kiss turns out bad, and you're thinking you should turn back now. But, things got better. Much, much better... I was wined and dined, and served their amazing Table Burger with bacon and hand-cut fries. It might seem like simple food from a fancy place, but it was the best burger and fries I've ever eaten. I couldn't stop eating the fries--perfectly crispy, perfectly perfect. The flavor from the burger made me cry out in ecstasy (okay--it was really only in my mind--didn't want the other people to think I'm crazy). It had no tomato or lettuce--you get me, hT--you really get me! I was contently full and satisfied by then, but I wanted something sweet to end my meal. The Berry Cobbler with Ice Cream completely put me over the edge. It came out piping hot, with a crispy topping, drizzled with caramel; the cold ice cream helped to cool off the hot cobbler on my tongue. Not too sweet--a perfect balance with the tart berries and the sweetness from the caramel and ice cream. Delicious! hT, it was a wonderful evening, and definitely worth the wait.
