Last night we celebrated our 23rd anniversary at Vintage Tavern and it could not have been more perfect. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, elegant, and welcoming. The stone walls, lighting, and overall ambiance created the perfect setting for a special evening together. What truly stood out was the attention to detail. Seeing "Happy 23rd Anniversary" printed on our menus was such a thoughtful and personal touch that immediately made us feel celebrated. Our waiter was absolutely amazing all evening long. His recommendations were spot on, from the wine to the entrees and dessert, and he made the entire experience feel relaxed and special without ever making us feel rushed. You can tell he genuinely cared about making our anniversary memorable. The food was outstanding from start to finish. The steaks were cooked perfectly, full of flavor, and paired beautifully with the sides. The crème brûlée was incredible and the perfect ending to the meal. Then came one final thoughtful surprise -- complimentary champagne served with dessert to help us celebrate. That small gesture meant so much to us and really summed up the level of hospitality we experienced all night. Love it here! Yesterday my husband and I dined at this restaurant for the prime rib special. Today Monday the day after is National prime rib day so the restaurant decided to feature a special on prime rib for Sunday dinner. My husband made reservations online for 5:00 p.m. we arrived on time with no wait and because the restaurant was fairly empty we decided to dine at the bar instead of a table in the actual dining room. Our bartender/waitress, Lizzie, she was on point held the whole bar area down punctual assertive and had everything under control. I ordered a margarita I did ask her is it a fresh Margarita and she said yes and my husband ordered his normal crown with a splash of Sprite. My margarita in my opinion it didn't taste as fresh as I would like it to be and then I don't care to have a margarita in a tall glass that just screams mix not fresh to me. Nevertheless I just know not to order that again going forward but my husband's cocktail... Crown Royal with Sprite he enjoyed it! I wasn't super hungry so I decided to order a salad and add a piece of blackened salmon to it it was very good finished it all up... ordered it my way. My husband ordered the prime rib I believe medium his was a little bit more than medium but nevertheless he said it was good and he ate every last Fork full. We decided to make room for dessert so we share the creme bruelle which was pretty good ...not the best ever tho. Our dining experience took about 90 minutes we were able again to sit at the bar and catch some of the NBA Playoffs that were featured on TV. Overall the dining experience was a 10 out of a 10 five stars as usual of course a few bumps, but nothing to take away from this experience. The Ambiance is always lovely very inviting love the low lighting that it gives as well as the natural light that comes through the windows. The service always on point! We had such a great experience here for a birthday dinner! As soon as we opened our menu they put a little birthday message printed in the menu! It was such a nice and personal touch. Our visit was during restaurant week. I'm so picky when ordering a ribeye. This was just amazing and perfect. Presentation is fine. Smashed are well made. Smooth and just enough chunk. Our server was quick appetizers came just after drinks and house warm bread with real butter. The decor is elegant in the Vintage Tavern old school where tables are a comfortable distance from the other. Nice enough to have a romantic dinner. My experience started with frustration before I even arrived. It took three or four calls before anyone answered the phone. I left a message, but no one called me back. When I finally reached someone and asked for a reservation between 7:15 and 7:30, the hostess kept insisting it was at 5:00 until she realized the mistake. Upon arrival, the bar was extremely crowded. The bartender was very kind and did their best, but they were clearly overwhelmed. The entire environment was very loud, to the point that I can't imagine enjoying a meal in the dining room. For dinner, I originally ordered flounder, but they were out and offered seabass instead. While the seabass had good flavor, it was a bit dry, and both my appetizer and entrée took quite a long time to arrive. I asked if the appetizer could be prepared for one, but it came out for two anyway. The biggest disappointment was the wine list. The selections by the glass were very poor--no Virginia wines, which Vintage Tavern used to feature. I asked to taste a few options, and while the staff was generous with pours, every wine I tried tasted oxidized or simply not good. For the prices charged, I expected far better quality and selection. In the end, one person dining out shouldn't spend nearly $80 and leave unsatisfied. Unfortunately, between the phone issues, long waits, loud atmosphere, and poor wine options, I don't see myself returning to Vintage Tavern. read more

My husband and I stopped in for an impromptu dinner date. We were able to get a reservation using open table less than 30 mins before we arrived. This is a quaint spot. It reminds me a lot of a scene out of Harry Potter. The decor makes me think there was an attempt to make the place feel old and "vintage" but to me it felt more like a movie set. We were greeted shortly upon arrive and sat within 10 mins or so. Our table was in front of a fireplace so that added to my Harry Potter vibe. The place was very busy but our server came over right away and shared the items of the day as well as answered some questions before going to place our drink order. Shortly following him a server brought "bread" to the table which was southern cornbread. My husband was given A massive piece while mine was a partial corner that looked like it had been banged around in the bread basket. No biggie I wasn't expecting bread so it was a bonus not a detractor except for the taste. This was at best average corn bread. It was dense and salty. Nothing like sweet or even slightly sweet southern cornbread I'm accustomed to. That really set the tone for my expectations for the rest of the meal. We started with the sampler which included biscuits, strawberry jam, ham, pickled carrots and onions, deviled eggs and two toasted bagged te slices with a goat cheese dip. The sampler was meh. The jam was the best item and i ate that solo. I decided not to get an entree after that and order the strawberry salad from the featured menu and an order of fries because why not, my husband got the elk chops with roasted veggies. My strawberry salad was fine nothing really noteworthy. My husband's elk chops were amazing and definitely a great recommendation from our server. They were tender and tasty. We had to add a little salt and pepper but that's our taste preference so no points off for that. The roasted veggies were golden potatoes and squash. Both very tasty and cooked to perfection. Fries were good and hot. Can you really mess up a fry? Which brings me back to the cornbread. The biscuits on our sampler were so dry and bad it actually made the cornbread tastier. We used the strawberry jam to sweeten the cornbread and enjoyed it so much more. But does that count if one fits mid so bad it makes a different bad item better? I don't know, you be the judge. We also had a white peach cosmopolitan. It was strong but tasty. I would order it again. Overall the best part of our visit was our server. He was attentive and helpful. The best part of our meal was the elk chops and roasted veggies. Definitely try those if you are in. I would also say the southernness of this establishment is lost. After our theater matinee we wanted to enjoy dining out and chose the Tavern which we have eaten at for many years. Under new ownership the restaurant has gotten better even tho it was good before. We had a 7:30 time and though it was busy earlier, there were many nice tables available and it was quiet. Our waiter was excellent and pampered us without asking every two minutes how we were doing with mouths full of food. We ordered the Oysters Rockefeller, the pear and kale salad, the flounder and the crab cakes. Everything was well prepared and local. Our meals were served in order and without rushing us. We didn't have room for dessert but we will next time we go there. We met our assistant chef and it was so nice to talk to the kitchen staff. (Whaaaat!?! - don't act like you don't know how hard that can be on a busy night in any restaurant!) At the end of the meal Kara surprised me with a happy birthday song that made everyone stop talking and listen. Second time here and right off the bat the hostess could not be more inconsiderate. The first words were, "are we expecting you?" My answer was simply "no but we'd like like a table". We were met with "we have barstools available." I swear, are they outside? In the parking lot? In the bathroom? Ok? Are they at the bar? Well, I ended up going to the website and making a reservation while sitting at the bar, therefore we will be sitting at a table in the dining room. Enough to wake up the taste buds, but doesn't infringe on the entree. I had the salmon with rice and roasted vegetable spears. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Fifty years ago, on December 22, my wife and I shared our first date, dining at an upscale restaurant in Ohio. Hoping to recreate a bit of that memorable evening, we chose the Vintage Tavern in Suffolk and made reservations for 4:00 p.m. When we arrived, the hostess escorted us to the bar area, which was furnished with high tables and tall chairs. At age 82, my wife and I looked at one another and gently explained that there was simply no way we could climb onto those chairs. The hostess informed us that our reservation clearly stated we would be seated in the bar area and that the dining room did not open until 5:00 p.m. There were no such notes on our OpenTable reservation, but she insisted otherwise. Eventually, the women behind the bar intervened, saying they believed they could seat us in the dining room early. We were returned to the waiting area, where there was a single chair available for my wife. The rest of the furniture was covered with pillows that were being carried out to the patio. After about a ten-minute wait, we were finally escorted into the dining room and seated at a table beside a fireplace with a roaring fire--a welcome and comforting touch. Our waitress was very pleasant and asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. I told her that we were. When I inquired about specials, she explained they had not yet been announced, though she later returned to inform us of the soup du jour. I ordered the soup, which was acceptable, while my wife chose the wedge salad and found it delicious. For our main courses, I ordered the 1818 Hereford ribeye cooked medium, and my wife selected the salmon served over bowtie pasta. She enjoyed the salmon but felt the pasta was drowning in an excessive amount of olive oil. Unfortunately, my steak was a disappointment. A medium cook, to me, should include a hint of pink, but that was likely impossible given the thin cut. Worse still, the steak was gristly and difficult to cut and chew--far from what I had expected. The true highlight of the evening, however, was sitting across from the woman of my dreams, the same woman who entered my life fifty years ago. Although we were disappointed with the meal (though not with our waitress's service), we chose not to complain. For my birthday dinner we went early on a Tuesday which made it nice because we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The mixed drinks and wines were very good, so were the apps and desserts that we tried. The issue we had was none of our steaks were cooked to the proper temperature. My husband ordered his filet "Pittsburg" and my daughter and I ordered ours "medium" What we got was 1 medium rare and 2 medium well. My husband is used to not getting the steak how he likes it but the server said that a lot of people have been ordering "Pittsburg" or very rare steak and she said the chef knew how to prepare it that way. I guess we were just disappointed as in the past the entrees have been on par with the rest of the food. Addionally, my dinner was not good and I got an upset stomach by the time we got home. This restaurant has been going downhill and my meal was terrible. The mashed potatoes were watered down and had no flavor, the beans were unevenly cooked and not appealing. None of the steaks were prepared as ordered and my sons pork chop was not as described one the menu. We have eaten here a few times and it has always been a good experience. Yesterday was the first time we went on a week day. Maybe there is a different chef then on the weekends but we expect more for $700 dinner! read more

We made reservations for tonight. When we sat down I told our server I was allergic to seeds and nuts. For appetizer we ordered pimento cheese. Out came crackers covered in seeds. I sent them back and soup came out with more seeded crackers. It was loud in there. People who worked there wore clothes I would clean the house in....the atmosphere did not marry with the menu. I didn't expect much just from the looks of this place. It looks like a house and the inside definitely lived up to it's name, a vintage tavern for sure. We ate inside because it was a little chillier that day, however both the inside and outside were beautiful. There is a little garden with plenty of outdoor seating in the back and we would have loved to eat outside had it not been chilly. The menu seemed pretty simple, but I will say, every single item we ordered was nothing short of exquisite and delicious! I ordered the poke as an appetizer and was fickle about ordering it because this wasn't a place known for poke, but I took my chances and I was so glad I did! The tuna was so fresh and the sauce underneath was so good I was practically licking the plate! Our second appetizer was the Roasted Bone Marrow and I was iffy about trying that as well, but yet again it was probably one of the best things I've ever tasted! The marrow was so savory and made a really tasty spread. It was the consistency of butter but flavored with beefy-goodness! For our entrees we got the Pan Seared scallops and the Lamb. The scallops were the perfect consistency and not too salty, but well-seasoned. It was a little on the sweeter side however the herbs and tomato sauce in the center balanced this out! The lamb was very tender and flavorful. The sauce and the roasted veggies alongside of it were cooked to perfection. Because each item that we ordered was so good, we HAD to order dessert to see how it tasted, despite how full we were. The blueberry cobbler did not disappoint! It was served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel on top. It was the perfect dessert to end the night. Aside from the food being so good, I want to note that the staff did an AMAZING job. They were very detailed with describing the menu/specials and when answering any questions we had. We were checked on quite often throughout the night too for refills, questions, etc. They were the nicest and treated us like royalty. My husband and I came here for a date night. We were seated upstairs, which was very nice because it felt as if we had private seating. The tables are not super close together like at other restaurants so it was nice to have that bit of privacy for our date. I'm not a huge wine drinker but I did have a moscato and liked it a lot. For dinner I had the tuna, it was delicious. I can't remember exactly what my husband ordered but I know it was a steak and he enjoyed it very much. This was a random pick by the girl freind. Had no idea what we were in for. We were warmly greeted and invited in (despite being in our full motorcycle gear). We had no reservations and it only took them a few minutes to get us a table. The Server Ray was incredible, he was young but knew his job to a T. I had decided on a pasta dish, until Ray revealed the specials. I had Elk before, so I knew I had to try it. This version was easily one of the best plates ever put in front of me. The super rich and buttery elk contrasted against a hardly spiced hash/broccoli was perfection. The Elk was perfectly cooked. If I get a last meal, this is it. Add this to world class service from the entire staff and you have a dining experience on par with the best of the best! Some will say this is expensive. 7 years later, we are back in the area and Vintage Tavern was high on our list to re-visit. It was our favorite place when we lived here back in 2014 and we were hoping that nothing had changed. Made reservations via Open Table (be aware that you do need a card and will be charged $20pp if you cancel within 48 hours). As soon as I pulled into the parking lot, I could tell that it was going to be as fantastic as we remembered. Atmosphere is fantastic. We were seated in the main dining room at a very comfy, spacious table for our party of 6. Our server, Kat, was genuinely one of the best servers we've ever had. Sweet, hilarious and provided us with the best culinary experience with recommendations. She definitely heightened our experience. Drinks: we tried tons of the drinks off the cocktail menu and all were fantastic. My personal favorite was the Tavern Martini. Those blue cheese and bacon stuffed olives are something special. Ask for 700. Bartenders will hate you... worth it. Their aperol spritz was damn good too. Appetizers: we got the Taste of Southern Goodness... don't miss it. They are able to make it for the number of people at the table, which is awesome. We also got the Tuna Poke and the Roasted Bone Marrow. The only one I would skip on next time is the Tuna Poke, but I'm biased since I just moved here from Hawaii. Did I mention to get the Taste of Southern Goodness? Entrees: I got the King Salmon Special which was fantastic. Their Route 17 Pig Plate is also BOMB. Every bite on that plate is packed with flavor. The mac and cheese was epic. Both of their steaks, the tenderloin and the ribeye were perfectly prepared and flavorful. Literally no complaints. I'm struggling with the rating here, it's probably a 3.5 .... bc service was good and ambiance was great and attention to detail is there... but the food was underwhelming and incredibly expensive. I've wanted to try Vintage Tavern for quite some time, like 6-7 years now and it just hasn't worked out for me to come yet for a meal. Last night, my friend chose this spot for her birthday dinner, so we easily made a reservation and came. Bc it was the day after the holiday I think, it was absolutely dead, no one inside. We had a few patrons at the bar but no one on the lovely patio (it was HOT) and no one else in the dining room aside from a small two-person table. So we had our server's full attention. I ordered a sweet tea and it was so sweet I did not, and could not drink it. I asked for half unsweet half sweet, he brought it back and it tasted exactly the same. So I asked for unsweet with Splenda. Note: if I think it's too sweet, it's probably ridiculously sweet for most people... The menu changes around as items are available - I love that. For my friend's B-day they updated the menus with a "Happy Birthday" on top which was a cute, personalized touch. We went with the Taste of Southern Goodness appetizer for $15 to share and added a small side of pimento cheese with crackers for $5. It had a wide variety of goodies: Buttermilk Biscuits, Seasonal Jam, Edwards Ham, Deviled Eggs, Pickled Vegetables, and Sausage. All good and great portion for three. We enjoyed this. I think it was listed at $15 +$5 for pimento but we were charged $26 for some reason.... My fiancee ordered the market fish of the day special - which was two soft shell crabs, lightly breaded and fried, on a bed of grits with peas, mushrooms, tomato and a light green goddess dressing drizzle. A fair sized and fresh portion for about $40. He got a side of French fries and asked for extra crispy for $8. They weren't crispy and he ate about 1/4th of them. I ordered the Cider Brined Pork Chop for $36. With, ratatouille, mushrooms, a delicious Anson Mills grit cake, and a huge pork chop with the fat left on it. I realize why, but I don't like all that fat so I had to cut it off and it took a long time. It was too large of a portion for me, but yummy with a berry jam on top. The grit cake and fresh veggies were delicious. My friend ordered the Pan Seared Flounder for $33. It was a decent size of fish filet with veggie succotash, red pepper brown butter sauce, and fresh herbs. She also added a side of potatoes for $8 and ordered a bar drink for $11-12. Bc it was my friend's birthday - she got a free scoop of ice cream of her choice or sorbet. She went with the lemon sorbet which def. tasted house-made. We didn't order dessert though the bread pudding and banana creme pie did sound appealing. We were just so full that we couldn't do it. During our meal the manager came over and asked how things were and made sure to say "happy birthday" to my friend. In fact, everyone say that to her from our server to the sweet hostess. All in all - the meal was about $220 for the three of us with three entrees, two sides and the appetizer and one alcoholic drink and unsweet tea. I wasn't especially blown away by the smaller menu and the price for the meal was super high. It's a beautiful establishment and the quality and service was good. I think the menu was too heavy for us and we felt very full afterwards. We commented that if we come back - we'd like to sit on the patio, order a starter or two, a salad, and perhaps one entree to split and be done. read more

We enjoyed an early supper here on Saturday, July 12, sitting in the bar area. Their pubfare was just what we wanted with our bevies. Servers Misty and Jackson were attentive, helpful and fun to chat with intermittently. The manager treated us to their pimento cheese platter which we originally declined, assuming it would be made with plastic orange cheese-food. It was not, was delicious and savory on the 'everything' flatbreads. We enjoyed our food and the experience so much we returned for dinner the following day and was served by Drew who also was delightful. Thanks for good food. Wonderful, custardy cornbread! On November 20, 2025, we had a small wedding at St. Luke's church in Smithfield, VA. Afterwards, the 8 of us had reservations at Vintage Tavern. What a wonderful dinner - everything from the food, wine, ambiance and especially the service.We had a couple of different appetizers and 8 different dishes, including a vegetarian dish for one of our vegetarian attendees. Everything was delicious. We started with a champagne toast and then had two terrific bottles of red wine with dinner. The best part was our server, Elizabeth, who was incredibly sweet and very attentive to our various questions and requests. She went out of her way to make the evening special including after dinner. My parents had brought a cake and cake topper, and Elizabeth put the topper on and put it on a platter and delivered it to our table at the perfect time. I cannot overstate how much this meant to my folks and how everyone at the table remarked about how she was fantastic. Just an excellent place for celebrating a special event. read more

Looking to celebrate a special occasion or feel like a splurge, this is the place. First, I love the attention to detail. I made an open table reservation and indicated it was a birthday. Menus are prepared for groups to reflect celebrations (I know you can also call and convey this info). Good cocktail menu that rotates seasonally-- the fall caramel ginger mule was a fan favorite at the table. A full bar and a good selection of wine. For dinner, we started with the taste of southern for the number of people in our party. Gives a bite or two of each accoutrement per person - such a good biscuit! For dinner, I had the pork chop while others had specials. All very good! For dessert, we had the Guinness ice cream (it's got a good flavor - that's enjoyable even to non-beer drinkers), the bourbon pecan pie and the apple crumb cake. You're not rushed, I felt service was a good flow and was attentive but not hovering. I read they have a course meal that can be paired with wine that I'd like to try on Friday! This place is great. Better than the rating. Food is very good, service was excellent & the atmosphere is exceptional without being stuffy.

First time visiting and OMGGGGGGG everything was soooo good. The restaurant is super pretty and inviting. We were placed in the upstairs dining room and it was very spacious and yet it felt very private. Our server was wonderful and had great suggestions. We ordered a charcuterie board, sangria, wine, and a draft beer to start with. Hubby ordered the Route 17 pig platter (ribs, pork belly, and a bbq coleslaw) and Mach and cheese. I ordered the fried chicken, mashed with white gravy, and green beans. The chicken was drenched on a buttermilk batter and THIS WAS DELICIOUS. Perfectly cooked. We finished with a blueberry bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is made in house. We had a great dining experience, can't wait to go back :). read more

This is hands-down our family's go-to restaurant when we are in the area. Their "Taste of Southern Goodness" charcuterie platter is a must-have. Their Taverntini with blue cheese & bacon stuffed olives is an indication of their attention to detail. The service is always efficient and extremely personable. As for ambiance, the building was rebuilt on the site of an old barn using a lot of the original lumber. Far from feeling rustic, it feels more like an old English Pub. read more

This place is a major disappointment compared to its former glory. Vintage Tavern and its sister establishments were recently sold and has been spiraling out to control. Everytime I come I am unpleasantly surprised with new ways to make my experience worst. Last time I went my family and I waited over 1.5 hours waiting on our food and spent a total of 3 hours at the restaurant. This time the wait wasn't the issue but the quality of the food. I ordered the bison ribeye which is the bigger of the two steaks. It came and it was the size of my palm, not to mention it wasn't cooked correctly. My potatoes were burnt and I'm leaving hungry. It's a nice place with nice seating but that's all they have going for them anymore. This is my last time coming sadly. read more
