This was the special of the day a duck dish, it tastes just as good as it looks

I am forever traveling to Norfolk for something. This is my first time going to a very nice sit down meal. I wasn't sure what to expect when I was invited. But I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the service, the presentation of the food and drink. If you are in downtown Norfolk and need a place to warm your stomach with some great food stop at 218

Norfolk has a lot of gems. Tried this place for the first time and planning my next visit. The food was absolutely delicious, everything was full of flavor. The service was just as good, the bartender was friendly and made the whole experience feel welcoming and relaxed. The atmosphere tied it all together, cozy, laid back, and very enjoyable . Definitely a spot worth checking out!

I came here on a Sunday for Happy Hour after seeing a show at Chrysler Hall. It's a short walk from Chrysler Hall & Scope. We arrived right at 4:00 as they were opening. We were greeted and seated right away. We ordered everything on the happy hour menu and were very satisfied with the taste, portions, and presentation. Our server was friendly and attentive. She checked on us throughout evening. The vibe is nice and cozy. Christmas decorations added a nice touch. One of the better dining options in Downtown Norfolk. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area.

The brussel sprouts SHINED!!! The shrimp scampi also was the very good and a very big portion. The fried green tomatoes were like any other fried tomatoes you could get from somewhere, but the brussel sprouts were different than anywhere else I have tried. My fiance really enjoyed the meatloaf and she crab soup as well. We will definitely be coming back here for the food. The only thing that was kind of not so great was the wait time to get our drinks and food. We stayed there in total of almost 2 and half hours. The drinks were very strongly made, so if you need a pick me up with that, this is the place to go. I highly recommend making a reservation here, especially during the peak dinner times. Parking is either street parking or a parking garage a block away from here.

Had a reservation for 730pm and when I arrived five minutes before that time, we ended up having to wait twenty mins for a table. What's the point of booking a reservation? When the scallop dish I ordered came out (almost two hours after being seated) I could immediately tell the food was spoiled. I didn't eat my meal and the waitress did not take the food off my bill. She did offer to order something else but I was already waiting several hours for this horrible dish. 4 hours later I began vomiting and going number 2 which lasted for FOUR DAYS. I've never been that sick in my life. Other people who ordered this dish must have gotten as sick as me. I thought I was dying. Will never return to this establishment again.

Stopped here for a drink yesterday and it's a very nice spot. Open, airy vibe! They have large windows with pretty seats. They have a bar and an outside seats as well. From 4-6 they have a great happy hour with cheap drinks and food. We didn't have any food but it all looked really great and decently priced. I would come back!

I was there with a professional group attending a conference. The choice of 219 Bistro was somewhat spontaneous----- decided mainly by other Yelpers and their reviews. The menu looked good. We made a quick Open Table reservation and arrived close to the same time we booked. We started with some beers at the bar until our table was ready. It was only 5-10 minutes and they had us seated and ready to order. Our server was very attentive and informative about specials and house favorites. I ordered the She Crab Bisque to start. Lots of lump crabmeat in a delicous creamy bisque. Very flavorful and satisfying. For the main course, I ordered the Shrimp Gumbo. There were 5 large shrimp surrounding the rice, andouille sausage and toasted chilis. I recommend highly. Not too spicy, but more savory and flavorful. Unfortunately no room for dessert.

2021 menu. It is NOT the menu on Google, however.

My heart wanted to give this place 5 stars. I can't because I didn't ACTUALLY eat here. According to the menu HANDED TO ME WHEN I GOT TO THE TABLE (The owner/manager let me know there is a menu posted outside the restaurant, but who runs outside then back to the table to cross reference a menu? Want a customer to see the full menu? Then hand it to us at the table). GOOGLE, they were supposed to have an extensive VEGAN menu. They had two items--edamame and Thai Zucchini curry. "Two" does not constitute "extensive". We left. The 3 stars are for the kind waitress--DANAE. She was quite understanding and suggested their sister restaurant, Leones. She told us 219 Bistro updated their menu recently, and clearly the black bean and corn veggie burger and the honey sriracha Brussel Sprouts didn't make the new menu list (though they are on the menu when you Google this place). Oh well.

Worst service I've had in years, we waited two hours to eat. Paid $120 for two entrées., an appetizer, and a cocktail. Will never return.

It's not fast-casual, but you're not waiting 30 minutes for your food. Expect at least 10 minutes for appetizers to arrive. Our entrees were ready in about 20, and the place was near capacity. The great thing about the wait? It was well worth it. Piping hot food, served with that homemade flavor arrives on dishes that almost match. I chuckled at the mismatched bowls that hit our table. I felt like family before my first bite. Meatloaf! I can't make one, but I'll eat one that is well made. Dense, flavorful and portioned to take some with you. My bonus was that I got my wife's leftovers, too. It was delicious! It was even better when I warmed it for lunch the next day. Traditional sides, worthy of their own review, but I'll keep it brief. We had a reservation, so we were seated immediately upon arrival. It was fairly empty in there as it was lunch time. Once seated, the waiter took our drink orders and bought out complimentary bread and butter which was so good! I wasn't super hungry so i got the soup and salad combo. I was told they are known for their she crab soup, and now, i see why! It was so good. There was plenty of crab meat in the soup as well. I wasn't a fan of the bread/cracker in the soup, but the soup itself was a 10/10.

There a lot of historical artifacts and decorations that show me what it was like before this place was a restaurant. My service was alright but not bad. My server was all over the place despite the restaurant not being really busy. It took awhile for me to get my food and place in my orders. But my server was very nice and friendly. I do wish when it came to deserts that they had a menu for the items. The food was very decent for me to say. The calamari was pretty good when I put in the marinara sauce. The French dip was pretty bland however despite using the sauce. I found the moose chocolate cake very intresting and it goes well with the whipped cream. Postivies ( plus other thoughts) 1. Some of the food was good 2. Intresting atmosphere. 3. Parking was not a issue. 4. Server was very nice. 5. Decent price for a full meal Negatives 1. Service was slow despite there being less people. 2. French dip was bland. 3. Lack of anything desert menu.

Because of the lack of street parking, my son chose to take a Lyft on our recent visit. It was a good choice. We were greeted and taken to a comfortable table. Service was prompt and helpful. Our last visit to Codex had been late January during Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week. But when I ordered my cocktail, telling my server my need for a cocktail straw, I was surprised at the answer. She told me that the bartender Addie remembered me, my cocktail preference and my need for a straw. I looked up and she waved at me. It felt wonderful that I has been remembered. The Vodka Martini was presented in the vintage glass so familiar to me. It was the pattern I inherited from my Mother & Aunt, so popular with the WWII generation. Addie remembered how excited I was when I first saw the glass. The menu was awesome as usual. We started with Oysters, Raw with a Citrus Mignonette. Also from the starter section we chose the yummy House Made Pimento Cheese and Everything Crackers. My entree was the Gnudi with Ramps, Chestnut, Black Pearl Mushrooms, & Asparagus in White Wine Lemon Sauce. My son chose the Tuna. Both were amazing with perfect presentation. We shared the Roasted Cauliflower, which was a culinary masterpiece. When time for the dessert menu came, my son first declined. But I remembered there was a choice that I can never pass up, When the menu arrived I was excited to see that one of my favorite desserts was still on the menu. Olive Oil Cake with Lemon Curd on the side, you are wonderful. My son first declined to share but decided to take a bite. And....that was all it took. He shared the entire cake with me. It looked so good that I took a bite before taking a picture. It was a delightful evening when I needed one the most. Both my server Laurel-Manette and Addie were welcoming and friendly. I promised to return with one of each of the many types of glasses in the vintage stemware pattern. The small one used for my cocktail was the only size they had seen. Laurel-Manette made my night when she told us that dessert was on the house. If you've never been to Codex it's a must go! There's nothing about it that I would change.
