Before leaving Gainesville, I stopped by one of the most popular restaurants in town for lunch. Located in a shopping center, it was busy but I was able to find a spot. With it being a weekend for brunch, there was a sizable line. Luckily, since I was dining solo, they have some first come, first serve seating at the bar which is where I was seated. After looking over the menu, I was torn between the croissant French toast and the fried chicken eggs benedict. The waitress offered to do a half order at each at a slight upcharge. I couldn't say no to the variety and I appreciated the variety. I had high hopes for Metro Diner and ended up being a little disappointed. The croissant French toast didn't have enough sweetness to it. And the eggs Benedict was just okay. While the food wasn't up to expectations, the service was stellar. Friendly, efficient, and accommodating. read more

I haven't been to any diners since relocating to Gainesville. I came across this place through a Google search while trying to find new restaurants to try, and I decided to give it a shot. First of all, this place is busy--I visited on a Wednesday around 11 AM, only to find it was over 80% occupied even at that time. However, the servers were still very attentive and friendly. The portions were generous, and the food was prepared perfectly. Traditional American cuisine. I'll definitely be back to try more dishes! read more

Always a good stop when visiting our grandchildren and family in Gainesville. Ordered breakfast for the grands and daughters for a celebration after a dance recital. Akira was our friendly server and she did a great job! Even though it was a Sunday 'morning rush' we didn't have to wait long. The kitchen staff are remarkable with their culinary skills. The feeling of relaxation while waiting to be seated and eating our meal was very refreshing. Great job to all and especially to Akira for a job well done!! read more

4 out of 5 stars I stopped by Metro Diner recently and tried a little bit of everything--and for the most part, it did not disappoint! I ordered the Country Fried Steak with scrambled eggs and home fries (with peppers and onions), but unfortunately, the steak was a miss for me. The breading was extremely salty--so much so that I couldn't enjoy the rest of it. That's the only item I wouldn't order again. On the bright side, everything else was delicious! The Fried Chicken & Waffles were a standout--crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. Just a heads-up: the sweet and spicy sauce doesn't come automatically--you have to ask for it, which I wish I had known beforehand. Once I got the sauce, it really pulled the dish together. I also tried the Banana Pudding Waffles (yum!) with turkey sausage, eggs, and home fries--super tasty and fun twist on a classic. The Steak and Egg White Bowl was a solid, lighter option and still packed with flavor. Service was great, but if you go, try to sit in Nikki's section. She was AWESOME--friendly, on point, and made the whole experience even better. Overall, it was a satisfying visit. I'll definitely be back--but I'll be skipping the country fried steak next time. read more

I ordered the strawberry bread pudding. It's awful! Lump of soggy bread no flavor. No strawberry infusion, no strawberry cream cheese icing, no strawberry crunches or whatever and the strawberries that were there were not ripe. Looked nothing like the photo. Complete waste of money. And no dip with my chicken tender meal. read more

Happen to stop in to the gem as we waited for our hotel room. The service was outstanding , as we started with a smile and great attitude. I ordered grits and shrimp at the suggestion of our waitress and was treated to an amazing creation. Not your normal shrimp and grits, and too much for me to finish ( which can be hard to believe). A deep fried grit block was the center of the dish covered with spicy grits, gravy, chopped up sausage and shrimp. Because of traveling with our dogs we were in a covered outside area that was hopping with dinners. The inside looked very inviting but we were not able to use it this time. read more

I go to this place a lot, because although it gets very crowded, the food and the service are very good; but unfortunately today was not the case. I ordered a waffle, which inside was raw and sticky dough. They kindly made me another one, but it was the same. My husband ordered pancakes, and it was the same. We were very disappointed with the food, in the end they deducted it from our bill. If I go back, I know I can't eat some waffles there, it's very sad. read more

Another RV rally, so another chance to try a new place. We've been to other Metro locations, but this is the first time at the Gainesville location, so it qualifies as new in my book anyways. Had 15 people in our party, and the service from Megan was top-notch. Glasses stayed full, orders were correct and everyone was happy with her efforts, despite having our large group plus at least one more table. I had the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli while mama went for the fried fish with fries, onion rings and a cup of what may be the most wonderful loaded potato soup I've ever had. My steak was perfectly cooked and the gravy was delicious. But the real shining star here was the broccoli. Just crispy enough and with a garlic butter that was awesome. Definitely will be back when in the area, which I know I will be. read more

We haven't been to Gainesville in several years and decided to go back to the Metro Diner for lunch when we visited recently. We came after the lunch rush hour, so we had excellent service. Very nice, laid back ambience...amazingly enough, we ended up getting here unexpectedly 23 mins before closing time! I apologized to the fella at the front and said to nevermind since it was so close to 8pm and I'd thought they closed at 9pm. To our mutual surprise, he looked up at the clock and said, "Not too bad, you've got plenty of time!" and seated us immediately. Wow. They don't even do that at the CureSpot when there's an hour before closing time!! (Don't get me started on THAT place... Our rears had barely touched the seats when Deana took our order for our drinks and then returned immediately for our dinner order! Wow, prompt service and then some!! Our fish and chips we both ordered were hot and fresh, delicious and I actually can say I like their coleslaw. Usually, I'm pretty picky about my coleslaw and no one's slaw meets that criteria...but theirs is actually very good! Our fries were crispy and not soggy, not greasy at all. Nice sprinkle of seasoning at the end was nice too. My only thing I didn't care for and neither did my husband was the tartar sauce. It had an unusual and not a wonderful flavor...almost like someone had dumped cinnamon or nutmeg in it....hard to place the exact flavor, but it made enjoying our fish difficult. Our cinnamon apple bread pudding was spot on, but I'd recommend serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream right on top. That would knock it out of the ballpark for every bread pudding order from then on! For great comfort food....wonderful breakfast and brunch food, this is gotta be your spot!! (P.S., if you sign up online to their email club, they're offering 50% off one entree and you can't beat THAT!!) read more

Loved sitting at the bar and watching the hustle of the kitchen. Food is amazing but be prepared for a wait.

My mom has always patronized this location by ordering food to go. Today she wanted to dine in. It was somewhat busy but not packed to capacity. The hostess was very friendly and seated us immediately. However, it took the waitress 15 minutes to even acknowledge us. We observed 4 additional parties arrive, be seated, order drinks, and receive drinks before I had to ask the hostess for help. It was only then we were greeted by a waitress. We ordered coffee and when adding the creamer, we realize that all of our silverware was dirty. We had to ask for a new set of silverware. The food was pretty good. They added way too much cheese to the grits for me. If you like extremely cheesy grits, it's perfect for you. Overall, our waitress was not attentive at all. We had several other waitresses help us. We had another waitress give us more coffee and another waiter to give us creamer. This was unfortunate to be honest. Maybe I'll go back when I'm in town again to try another day. Jury is still out though. read more

Great food as usual. Best chicken tenders in town! Today for lunch we had a wonderful waitress, Emily, so friendly and attentive. Always love this place and staff is always fantastic. The place runs like a well oiled machine. They now put the sides in serpate bowls on your plate. Someone was thinking! So great to not have the gravy from the mashed potatoes get all over the fresh fruit when I customized sides. Also keeps sides warmer. Very clean restaurant. One of our favorite places, especially for breakfast. read more

We stopped at Metro Diner today while on a road trip. Saw that they had a yummy variety of pancake and waffle fun flavors and HAD to try it. We ordered 1 cinnamon roll pancake as an appetizer and the classic eggs Benedict, corned beef hash, and the meat lover scramble bowl. Everything was delicious. BUT more than our good order the service we got was exceptional!!! Our waiter was so extremely nice. As soon as he first approached our table, we were greeted with such genuine hospitality he went above and beyond. Honestly, he set a really high standard to what all waiters should be like. Amazing. Would highly recommend. Whoever is doing the hiring at this diner. Should be giving this man a raise. Love him! I wish I knew his name. read more

We stopped at Metro Diner on our trip from Milwaukee, WI to Bradenton, FL. 20ish hours into the trip with 7 of us in a car and we could not have picked a better place.
