Wednesday night downtown Gainesville was pleasant. My husband and I are not students so we enjoy environments conducive to conversation, good food and a craft cocktail. Both Baby Jays and Cry Baby exceeded our expectations! We sat at the bar at both places. Both bartenders were talented and delivered craft cocktails that were creative, balanced, carefully prepared and presented with pride. These guys aren't just slinging rum and cokes or cold beer. Same goes for the kitchen. Food was a creative bar menu. I had an amazing fried chicken sandwich with a twist. My husband enjoyed the smash burger. One giant basket of tots was plenty for both of us. We will certainly return for live jazz Tuesday night but will likely skip the Friday night. Again... we are not students! read more

I came recently with some friends during their Christmas Miracle Pop Up celebration. The decor was so fun and I absolutely loved the ambiance it created, very festive! Along with decor, they serve special holiday cocktails in fun Christmas mugs. I didn't indulge in a cocktail this go around, but it looked like a lot of fun. This was not my first visit to Cry Baby's, as I've been here a couple times. I will say the service was a little slow tonight. Due to the holiday festivities, it was busier, so we had to put our names down for about a 30 minute wait. This wasn't a big deal. Once we were seated our server didn't come to our table for probably 10-15 minutes. During that time we had several servers come to our table confused if we had been served or not...which was weird. There appeared to be a lot of miscommunication. When she did arrive she asked if we were ready to order, we hadn't even gotten water yet. There weren't enough clean cups, so we had to wait even longer to receive an extra one. We put in an order for the nachos when we ordered our waters. The nachos took about 20 minutes to come out. They seemed kind of cold when they arrived too. This was disappointing as their nachos are usually very good. It appeared as if they were "forgotten" in the kitchen, thus the reason they were cold. The service was lackluster, but the girls serving us were super friendly. I could tell they were trying, it was just a very busy night and they weren't on their A-game. For the food, it was good. Starting with the nachos, we ordered those to split. They are a good size and usually are a hit. But sadly not tonight, as I said they arrived cold. I couldn't tell if it was the crema that was cold or the queso, but there was a weird mix of lukewarm sauces on them. The flavors were good, but it just didn't appear very fresh and the chips were even a bit soggy. This was disappointing because I have always loved their nachos. For my entree, I went with the Big Baby Smash Burger with a side of garlic parmesan fries. Luckily this came out in a reasonable amount of time after ordering. The burger consisted of 2 smashed patties, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and a burger sauce/aioli atop a brioche bun. I was very impressed with this and thought they did a great job with the smash burger. The patties were very much smashed with nice crisp edges. The cheese was gooey, complimenting the brioche bun and other topping nicely. Would highly recommend this for an entree, hit the spot! The fries on the side were a pretty large portion with ample amounts of Parmesan cheese. I liked these and the garlic aioli they were served with. Although the Parmesan didn't really stick to the fries and a lot of it fell to the bottom of the fry basket. These are good, but not necessarily worth the up charge. One of my friends ordered the tater tots on the side and these were FABULOUS! Super crispy on the outside with a softer center, they were delectable and fried to perfection. I would definitely consider ordering these next time. My friends all enjoyed their entrees as well! Overall, we had a decent experience at Cry Baby's. The food was good for the most part. The nachos were a let down sadly, but the burgers were awesome. I was thoroughly impressed with their smash burger and the tater tots. The service was less than desirable. They were super busy and the servers couldn't seem to keep up with it tonight. Which I understand, it happens. But they were super nice and they were trying to be as attentive as possible. The Holiday pop up is definitely worth checking out as the vibes are super fun and festive! Will be retuning at some point next semester. read more

Ugh. This used to be one of my favorite spots in college but when I recently came I waited over 45 minutes for my drink. It was packed inside so we found a spot outside where you could scan the QR codes to order. I was with a group of 6 people and 4 people got their drinks within 10 minutes of ordering and even got their 2nd round while me and one other person waited for our first one. We asked several workers and one of them was especially dismissing and rude. Other ones were apologetic but just said the bar was slammed. We ended up going straight to the bartender and they made it right away and apologized and gave 50%. That was nice. Seems to be lack of communication. Hope next time is better, like what I was used to in college! read more

Cry Baby's is a great for beginning your night or just a happy hour vibe. I came solo on Tuesday to get some happy hour treats while it was calm since it's Spring Break this week. Highly recommend getting their burger if you're craving a good cheeseburger. The little baby burger is a single cheeseburger with pickles, mustard, and grilled onions. It definitely hits the spot when it comes to something hearty but filling before indulging in multiple drinks for the night. Also, I got an order of tots as I always get their rosemary parm fries. The tots are huge, and seasoned perfectly. The order is large enough for a party of 2-3, I did get my tots to go since I couldn't finish mine. I got the pretty ricky for my happy hour drink, which is a vodka based drink with floral notes. I do wish that their happy hour menu had more drink options. However, if you love Mai Tais or tiki based drinks - do try one! The group next to me order a few and the drinks and cups were so aesthetically pleasing and pretty. I have been loving happy hours in Gainesville, and one of my favorites is Crybaby's! One of my friends who graduated last year was in town so we came here for a little reunion dinner + happy hour :) The food is always really good, and my favorites are the happy hour snacks. I got the chicken deluxe sandwich and tots on the side. The portion of tots was really good especially since it's only $4 for happy hour, and they were so crispy and good. The chicken sandwich was a normal sandwich - still good! but nothing too special. It came will grilled chicken, mayo, cheese, pickles, lettuce. The chicken itself was cooked well. My friend did get the Korean chicken sandwich and it looked so so good, it was crispy and seasoned well. I have also gotten the Yuca fries here and definitely recommend those as well. My friends also got the nachos, to add protein it is an upcharge, but it looked good! I've also had the rosemary parm fries before and they are so so good, definitely recommend getting them for the table For drinks, my favorites are the Kimmy Kimmy and Pretty Ricky on the happy hour menu. The Kimmy Kimmy is a sweet vodka cocktail and has a cherry in it as well, and it is so good. Overall, I love the vibes of Crybaby's, and the servers are always so nice. The inside ambiance is just a typical bar and small restaurant, and it's connected to a jazz bar so it's nice to be able to hear the music coming from there. The food and vibe here are really on point. A MUST HAVE is the yuca fries with the curry sauce. We went on a Miracle on University Ave pop-up night and they had these super cute Christmas drinks. Very sweet, but fun. The chicken sandwiches are also delicious. I will say, the first time we went, the chicken was so thick and juicy I couldn't finish. This more recent time, the chicken portion was tiny... so much so that when my husband and I split the sandwich right down the middle, one side had chicken and one side just had some of the breading but no meat. Great experience! Went for a quick happy hour on a Saturday and it was a fantastic experience! Service was great and the food was delicious! We got a couple of smash burgers which were excellent and the yuca fries are not to be missed! The drinks were also really yummy! We will definitely be back! Our food and drinks were great. We always get the nachos and impossible smash burgers. The ambiance is fun and they've been experimenting with some creative drink glasses (order the Mai tai) which adds to the experience. Some of the employees are really nice and helpful, like our waitress and the hostesses. However, others seem like they actually hate being there and interacting with customers. Our group waited about a half hour (totally worth it) for our table, ordered two rounds of drinks, and dinner, which took a long time to come out, just to be rushed out by an employee who told us that we immediately needed to leave because there were other customers waiting. Not a great end to a really good time. There were plenty of tables available around us, so her comments felt targeted and uncalled for. It'll definitely make us think twice about returning, at least for table service. read more

Crybaby's holds a special place in my heart - ESPECIALLY their Curry Aioli sauce (you should definitely ask for a side of that.) The staff are always so sweet and friendly, and not to mention the vibes are always chill and fun. Their drinks menu is so creative and the bartenders always add some extra flair! Decorations and vibes were great but service leaves a lot to be desired. Walked in as a party of 6 and were seated immediately, host was amazing and kind. Was not greeted by our server for at least 15 minutes, when we did see her she did not greet us or introduce herself simply came up and said "are you ready to order" and informed us of the auto-gratuity and that it all had to be on one check- not a big deal we know things can be busy and we plan to tip anyway. One person ordered food and the rest of us ordered drinks, food came out cold and drink came out in a broken glass. We waited for over 20 minutes for our server to come by so we could tell her but she never did and eventually we had to get up to find her and found her chatting in the corner and let her know about the glass and let her know we had been waiting for her for a whole. At this point the restaurant was no longer busy. We wanted to do a second round of drinks but never saw our server again and instead saw her drinking at the bar. When we asked for the check we expected 18 or 20% auto-gratuity which would not have been a problem, but when she dropped off the check the gratuity was 25% which was nowhere near deserved. To be seated at a restaurant for over an hour and only be spoken to once by your server and expect 25% is ridiculous. While some things such as the cold food and broken glass are beyond her control, we actively spoke up to her about it and how we waited a long time to see her while she was chatting and drinking, and were actively ignored. read more

I was so hungry I couldn't wait patiently for some punk behind the bar to finally stop by to talk about what was delivered to me - they were scrambling, only 2 of them, with Christmas cocktails, far too busy for me since my plate was delivered. IN FACT - they never asked me how my food was. I can't ever recall a time I've been so angry at a restaurant. I ate about half, and pushed it away, including my beer. Was so FN PISSED. The punk behind the bar asked if I was done and I told him to get it out of my face. Never would recommend. Too busy for their own good, that the quality isn't maintained. read more

Cry Baby's, you have my heart If I could write a 500 page love letter to this restaurant I would. And definitely should. This has to be the food offered in Gainesville. It's there when you need to just eat by yourself and have a good meal, and perfect for big gatherings with friends. My go to orders are the big baby burger, yuca fries ( best food combo imo), gochujang chicken sandwich, and the peri peri wings. I don't know how it's possible to get it right and perfect every single time, but the chefs in the back always do. The flavors are big and loud. Nothing is ever under seasoned, and they always come up with new creative dishes that gets everyone excited. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful too, with a refreshed diner feel.
