A morning appointment at a doctor in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake created the need for lunch, which I normally skip. We had previously tried two different eateries after morning appointments. Both spots were crossed off my list for repeat visits. The choices remaining were recommendations from a good friend who lives in the Grassfield area or a Yelp search for nearby places with good ratings. I chose Yelp. Metro Diner was close and on the way home. The location is a small strip center facing Volvo Parkway. Because there's no curb cut from the south, enter by a side street that loops behind the 7-Eleven to Volvo Commons. The eatery serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu included an extensive breakfast/brunch menu. Dinner items also were plentiful. But the number of true lunch selections was limited. I ended up ordering the Fish & Chips from the dinner menu, substituting green beans for the fries. Coleslaw also came with the dish. I was served 2 large pieces of fish, enough for two meals. They were good as were the green beans. The coleslaw was excellent & exactly to my taste. It's really hard to find restaurants that serve coleslaw the way I prefer. My friend had pancakes & bacon, which she proclaimed to be good. I loved the ease of paying by credit card with a small terminal the server brought to the table, The spot appeared to be popular, especially at the time we visited. Metro Diner will go on my list of approved "after doctor" eateries.

Stopped in after Dr. appointment since it's right on the way home and revues looked fairly good so we thought we would give it a try. We were greeted upon entering and seated immediately. Our waitress was very friendly and took our drink orders and left us to look over the menu. Noise level was a bit high and made it difficult to carry on a conversation and even hear our waitress. I was in the mood for breakfast still and ordered a short stack of pancakes and a side of bacon. Of course I had to have coffee. Everything was good and our waitress brought out a container of warm maple syrup for my pancakes.she was also very good about checking with me for coffee refills. My friend ordered Fish and Chips. Her meal came with coleslaw and French fries but she substituted green beans for the fries. Her meal was very good and the two pieces of fish were very large. After eating one piece and the sides, a box was requested to bring the other piece of fish home. We will probably return when in the area again but we both agree it will more than likely be when we are both in the mood for breakfast.

I visited Metro Diner located in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake recently on a Saturday morning. The atmosphere is what you would expect from a typical diner with a mixture of booths and table seating. They were busy and had a few customers waiting to be seated but since I was solo dining I was seated right away. I found the waitstaff to be very friendly and attentive, however my meal did not meet my expectations and left me feeling disappointed based on reviews I read. I ordered the Bissell Breakfast, which included scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, home fries, croissant French toast, and a side of fruit. There was a bit of a wait for my order, so I was disappointed when the food was not hot when it arrived. When ordering I specifically asked if the eggs were fresh-cracked and was told they were; however, the texture and taste suggested liquid eggs. Additionally, the home fries lacked any seasoning or salt, making them quite flavorless. Finally, although the waitress highly recommended the croissant French toast, it was only dipped in batter on one side, which was disappointing. After sharing my experience with a friend she suggested that I return to try the chicken and waffles, I am hesitant to make the drive back to Chesapeake given this experience. If you are in the area, please stop by and try the chicken and waffles and let me know if it is worth a return visit.

Came for lunch after church with my husband and our friends. We got there early and were able to get on the waitlist while we waited for our friends. 20minute wait on Sunday afternoon isn't bad. It was my husband's first time here and I had only been once several years ago. There were so many options it was hard to choose. I decided on the chicken tenders with cheese fries and broccoli. My husband was going to get the fried chicken meal but copied me and got the chicken tenders too lol. Our friends got the avocado breakfast sandwich with fruit, which was one item I was considering lol. Our other friend got the fried chicken Benedict. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The chicken tenders were seasoned well and the broccoli was cooked perfectly. Definitely a great spot for breakfast or lunch!!

If you're in Chesapeake and craving a hearty breakfast or some comfort food, you should give Metro Diner a try. The staff is friendly and the service felt relaxed but attentive. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was and it came out pretty quick. Everything tasted freshly made and cooked with care. My favorite are the pancakes and coffee. Ambiance is a typical diner set up with booths and tables for larger groups.

It took 7 minutes from the time we sat down to when we saw our server. The manager did come over during that time to explain that the servers were tied up with other tables. At that point I counted 4 servers and 5 other tables. After we ordered the food took another 20 minutes to arrive. If I was the server, I would not have served the meatloaf. My meatloaf was burnt (see photo). The mashed potatoes were lukewarm. The green beans were the best part of the meal. The green beans were cooked perfectly. Halfway through our meal the server appeared and asked if we wanted dessert. It doesn't look like a typical diner and there is minimal ambiance.

This was good,wasn't special. Service was good I got my refills without asking and that's usually my biggest problem with service when I go eat. I have no complaints. Just wasn't really anything great but it was definitely good. Ehh actually the sever was definitely a great server.

Came here once to pick up food and another time, I ordered delivery through their Olo service. The first time, I got the steak tips with green beans and mashed potatoes. First thing I noticed was the dish size was tiny and the weight was light. The steak tips were overcooked and the meal barely satisfied my hunger. The next time, I ordered delivery due to heavy rain and not feeling like picking up the food myself. I ordered the chicken tender plate with onion rings, side salad, and a biscuit. The meal took a long time to arrive 1hr 20 minutes after ordering but that may have been due to weather and traffic. The food was highly disappointing. The chicken tenders were small, didn't come with any type of sauce (lucky I had Chick-Fil-A sauce on hand), the onion rings were ok, and the biscuit was also okay but a little dry. I wasn't that satisfied with either of my meals and I honestly only ordered the second time because they gave me a 50% off entree and I was hoping the next meal would be better as Metro diner does get many good reviews but that may just be for their dine in service. I will probably not be back to this location or any other ones as there are too many much better dining experiences in the area. Overall, I was just pretty disappointed with striking out at Metro Diner.

We wanted some late breakfast so we stopped in for a bite at the metro diner. The service was great. We were seated immediately and the waitress was super sweet and quick. I ordered the huevos rancheros because it's my favorite thing. Their take on it is a bit different with what I'm used to. They fry the tortilla and then top it with the toppings. I wish there was more black beans because that's really my favorite part of huevos rancheros. There were like 5 beans on there LOL. The crispy jalapeños were REALLY good with it though. I'll still rate it high because it was pretty tasty.

Can't even tell you how much we loved it here. We decided to do a Christmas Eve breakfast here anna we LOVED it! The waitstaff was exceptional, very welcoming. The food...oh my God! The waffles were so fluffy. And HALF A CHICKEN with those waffles!? I could spend an hour taking about the strawberry butter. We also had the chicken eggs benedict, which was awesome! The cinnamon bun pancakes with candied pecans was to die for. Thankfully we have leftovers! This place is exceptional! My new go-to!

We had a party of Seven, virtually everyone at the table ordered the Chicken & Waffles. The 1" thick Waffle is served with a strawberry butter, I personally would prefer a cinnamon or apple butter , accompanied by 1/2 Chicken Fried to perfection served with a side of Nashville Sauce . Nashville sauce, Im told is Heat hotsauce and syrup mixed together for lip smacking toe tapping enjoyment!!! Everyone at the table attacked this Chicken and left a carcass trail that should serve as a compliment to the chefs in the kitchen. I ordered the Spicy Honey Chicken on a biscuit with a fruit cup on the side. The chicken biscuit was fire, the fruit was fired, I sent that back in exchange for grits. Unfortunately the grits didn't fare well for me either, as they were luke warm and a little loose. Our serve Jaxson, was very attentive and helpful, I'm sure we caused him to walk a mile, but he did it with a smile. The food was Reasonably priced, I'm going to try the Chicken and Waffles next time as that seemed to be the favorite throughout the restaurant!!!

Had a great first experience eating in the outside area. We are seniors so our options are limited so was pleasantly surprised by the heat lamps and the safety precautions. As for food, I had the fish and chips. Two large pieces with a nice crust to the breading. The fries were also tasty and I took half the meal home with me. My husband ordered the club sandwich and onion rings. The sandwich had ample meat and cheese and reminded us of the club sandwiches we used to get years ago. The onion rings were huge and tasty. First time here. This place is very hospitable. Staffs were very friendly and courteous. Very busy inside but it was still very clean. Food came out quickly as well. First time visiting Chesapeake for work and I found this place online. As soon as I walked in I knew I had made the right decision. The place has a vintage feel to it and the staff was friendly. My waitress Donna was so engaging and it felt like she loved working there. As far as I could tell it looked like the rest of the staff enjoyed working there. This place must have a lot of regular customers because I could hear the staff interacting with them. I ordered the Bissell breakfast with extra bacon. Wow, the cook deserves a raise. Everything was cooked to perfection. Probably one of the best breakfast plates I've had in a long time. I wish I had come a day sooner for lunch or dinner. The fried chicken looked great. I'll definitely come back when I'm in town again. read more

So I recently visited the Metro Diner located in Chesapeake, Va. I was impressed!!! The food was great!!!! I ordered my usual the same thing I get in Jacksonville, Fl (the Charleston Shrimp and Grits). They passed the comparison test, lol. I also had the mimosas. They were quite tasty!!! Mimosa certainly will be going back to this location, lol. The food is served in large portions. I had food to take home with me. My husband had the chicken and waffles. He REALLY enjoyed his meal....Let's just say he had very little to take home. My daughter had waffles and bacon. Yes she ate all of her food. The waffles were just right, light and tasty. The added bonus to the delicious food experience was our waitress. She was pleasantly nice. Although they were busy she didn't seem rushed at all. This will be my home away from home restaurant!!! we are semi regulars at Metro. love their chicken and waffles. ordered our usual drinks, Wife likes lemon with her water, Sorry out of lemons, and limes. (not a goo sign) tonight wife had chicken and waffles good as usual, however, the strawberry butter was served in a plastic ramekin, instead of scooped on top of the waffles. i could also see that the waffles weren't as CRISP on the outside as usual, i had spicy honey chicken sandwich... Was expecting a sandwich with HOT HONEY, what i got was an OK sandwich of 3 chicken tenders, with Louisiana hot sauce and their thin syrup on top. No honey taste, and not very hot nor spicy- disappointed. coleslaw was good. tea cold. As semi regulars, i noticed that the place is suffering from neglect, floors dirty, normally between customers, the wait staff or buss staff clean the tables and floors, not tonight. Also noticed that the glass doors were covered in finger prints. Either they were extremely busy today, or the manager is on vacation. The men's bathroom door handle is broken, there is dust on the towel dispenser. not a good sign. i certainly hope this is a 1 off situation, my wife will be back later this week for lunch with a girlfriend, so will find out then. i stretched to 4 stars, should be 3 for this visit. but based on past experiences with this Metro Diner, i felt 4 was hopeful. read more

Had gone previously and loved it. Came back and ordered the steak and eggs bowl. I love metro diner and was excited to try something new. I took my first bite and something didn't taste good. I realized the steak was bad and tasted very sour. I waited half an hour for the waitress to back. I explained the meat was bad. She quickly said uh okay. And took my plate and said not another word. I though surely she was going to come back quickly to ask if I would like something else instead. Another 20 minutes pass by and she FINALLY comes back, and says, "so do you want something else or what". By that point my boyfriend had already eaten, and I just wanted to leave. The food and service was great! We came early at 7:30am and it was already busy and lively inside. The host held the door open and greeted us, and we immediately felt welcomed. The food didn't take long to come out and we ordered the country fried steak, yo hala, and the honey biscuit. Everything was really fresh. I like this diner because of the management and some of the staff. The food is good, some of its pricey. But I must say they do make the best flavored coffees - haven't had one yet that I didn't fall in love with and get a cup to go. I'm mostly here for breakfast and the portions are large, so plan on taking some home or save some dough and share. read more

If you order through delivery, good luck. I've ordered from Metro Diner and the last 2 times they didn't pay attention to the order at all. I'm allergic to tomatoes, so when I ordered there Metro Club I specifically requested NO TOMATOES. When my order arrived it had tomatoes on it. Their lack of attention could have put me in the hospital. They have good food, but how good can it be if it makes you sick. Way to go Metro Diner. read more

We showed up not really knowing what to expect. Once we walked in, I noticed the typical millinial/hipster. I didn't expect much until I saw the menu. The selection was very different and I was eager to try. My lovely lady had the chicken and waffles (odd combo), the kids had a meaty lover omelette, steak tips on mashed potatoes, and broccoli and lastly chedder/broccoli soup, while I had the chicken parmesan. First-timers, this morning. :) Excellent service by our waitress Anna, and Eric, managing partner, went above and beyond to make sure our experience was top notch. Varied menu items. Our food was yummy!! Breakfast pie, Crab cakes, muffins, hollandaise, pancakes, even the coffee was delish. Our daughter waited on her pancakes longer than anticipated on a VERY busy Saturday morning. We didn't complain acknowledging the busyness, but the waitress must have conveyed that our wait was long to her manager. He then came by to tell us he was sorry and was going to comp them for us. Again, we didn't even raise a stink, yet he showed us extreme excellence! Kinda rare nowadays! We love the PATRIOTISM in the restaurant, as well. We will be back to support local! Tried to go again to last time it was packed and on a 45 minute wait. , we have only eaten here with family meals to go since the pandemic. Went back today around 2pm was not too busy and they did look staffed. Was not greeted by the host with a typical greeting when you arrive was talking to the other host. Several employees walked past waited on other tables, sweeping the floor , refilling sugar caddies. No one ever stopped to say someone will be with you. Host walked past twice and saw no drinks, I am sure he heard me ask my daughter do you want to go, and he watched me leave as he went into the kitchen. I worked several years at Applebee's as a corporate trainer, this is very disappointing. It would be one thing to be understaffed and busy , but it was not. The food has been great with takeout, but this was a turnoff. read more

Tina was our server today and she was outstanding. She was mentoring a new staff member who was nice and learning from the best. Her presence was warm, attentive and awesome. She took the time to explain the menu and asked for our preferences. The food was delicious and the serving size was filling. I recommend this outstanding, warm, friendly family establishment. I've never dined in at this spot before, but it was a nice spot to have a quick brunch with my family. It was very busy but most. I ordered the shrimp and grits but I lowkey should of gotten the chicken waffles for that is their most popular dish. My food was okay but the service was excellent. The shrimp and grits were a little watery for me, I know everyone is different and I've never had it before. So I can give the benefit of the doubt. Next time I'll get the chicken and waffle. They also serve really good Mamosa's. read more

Wow! Super impressed. I ate at the Chesapeake location for the first time last night. Waitress was friendly, nice and quick to respond. The Shrimp and grit cake dinner was delish. Nothing but fantastic all the Waac around. It's small,quaint,but it works. Fills up quickly, but wait has never been too long. Food is prepared hot and fresh to order. Servers are great. Food is seasoned well and everything on the menu is wonderful.. feels like home without the dishes to wash. You'll want make this spot a regular. read more

I've had many things on the menu however I always go back to the waffle and chicken. I can't tell you enough how great the strawberry butter is I can't believe it taste that real like you're actually eating fruit. It's absolutely amazing. Went her today with my family for the first time and LOVED IT. We were seated quickly, even though it was packed. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffles came with strawberry butter and I added $2 worth of fruit topping. It was delicious! The chicken was fried perfectly and well seasoned. Is a busy place on weekends. I was here with a co worker a month ago and it was pretty empty.. we got real quick service and they had crabcake benedict on the menu.. in fact if you look at the pictures here,, it is on the menu.. came in today and they took crabcakes off the menu....and she tried to talk me into fried chicken. Well, needless to say my taste buds were set for crab. She said they don't have crab and I couldn't have ordered it a month ago. So now your calling me a liar to top it off. First time eating here, my wife and 19 year old son joined me. Great friendly environment, everyone working was all smiles. We arrived shortly before 10 AM and while my wife and son ordered breakfast, I ordered a burger, but not any burger; I ordered a burger comprised of two grilled cheese sandwiches as the top and bottom bun. The grilled cheese sandwiches had fresh juicy tomatoes and crispy bacon between the bread. The burger was juicy, hot and delicious. I started the four inch tall sandwich with a knife and fork, but finished with my hands. The corned beef hash my son ordered with poached eggs was delicious as well. The corned beef was shredded, not cubed, and the potatoes were fresh cut into small pieces. All were combined on the griddle to give a hash brown crunch to the whole thing. My wifes omelet was delicious as well. Wendy was our server and she was friendly and patient while we decided what to order, and was available to offer refills and pre bus the table as required. Overall four stars. Reminds me of a NJ diner/breakfast shop. Stools and a counter are available to watch the cooks and get that real dinner feel. Two thumbs up. read more

Established in 1992.

Since the building's humble beginnings in 1938 and its revival as Metro Diner in 1992, Jacksonville's favorite place for breakfast has been serving satisfied guests for nearly 25 years. In 2000, master chef Mark Davoli and family took over and elevated the menu to include innovative new dishes created from local ingredients. Along with culinary creativity, the Davoli family brought more than 80 years of combined restaurant experience to Metro Diner. Both menus may be just two sides, but there is quite a bit to choose from. I think anyone would find something they would like here. There is one thing I want to note when it comes to paying. There is a 3% surcharge added to the total including taxes if you use a credit card instead of cash. In the end, if you are looking for a diner type of place, this one is worth checking out.

UNORGANIZED MESS! Placed a large take out order for dinner (family of 5) and was quoted a 15 minute pick-up time. Once arrived to pick up it became obvious there are issues with the efficiency of how this restaurant is running. 35 minutes after placing the order we were walking out with it. Before doing so, we had to ask if items that were up on the warmer were ours also and of course they were. Staff didn't seem to care about the wait time and just looked at us when we complained (this is where training employees in being apologetic and sincere would serve a business well). Once we arrived home, the entrees that were in the bottom of the bag were cold and soggy- indicating that they had been made at the beginning (a half hour earlier) and the ones on top were hot and fresh. Taste was delicious on the fresh entrees and unfortunately the cold/soggy ones were discarded as they were a wet mess. Definitely would NOT recommend this restaurant for take-out. And based on what was observed during our lengthy wait, not sure I'd recommend a dine-in experience either. read more

Recently visited Metro Diner in Chesapeake and was very impressed by the cozy, inviting atmosphere as well as the prompt and friendly service. The Poutine was a great starter. The Roasted Turkey Plate was a heartwarming tribute to a classic Thanksgiving meal. El Chorizo Burger was a delightful fusion of flavors. The Angus beef patty, blended with crumbled chorizo sausage, was juicy and packed with a flavorful punch. Topped with onions, peppers, and a zesty chipotle ranch, every bite was a burst of deliciousness. The fresh lettuce and tomato added a refreshing crunch, and I had them add some jalapenos for a little extra kick. Had the Caesar Salad as the side with the burger, fresh and crisp, with crunchy croutons and a creamy, tangy Caesar dressing that tied everything together perfectly. Every dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, making for an outstanding dining experience. We can't wait to return and try more of their amazing offerings. Highly recommended! read more

I've came here every Saturday for the past 3 months. I sit at the 7 seat "bar" which is first come first serve right in front of the kitchen line. The communication between all of them on the line is amazing. The man that runs the window is always so calm and collected during the busiest of times. Leah is great too. Always so sweet and gets you everything you need right away. It's great to watch this place work. Guy who looks like a young nick cannon always joking everybody getting them to smile in the mix of things. This is the absolute best breakfast place you can out in chesapeake. read more

Went looking around for a breakfast place this morning, so went to Ihop and Egg Bistro. Both places were slammed packed, so ventured a little further and found this place. OH MY WORD!!!! This place is amazing!!!! Food was great customer service was great and sitting at the counter watching the cooks and hearing their communication was extremely impressive. Definitely one of my new favorite spots. The waffle was awesome!!! All the fruit was so fresh and amazing. The Hot chocolate... I cant rave enough about it!!!! They have a repeat customer with me. read more

I am on my fourth visit and each time is better than the last. Since I tend to be a creature of habit, I always ask for Tina because her customer service and overall attentiveness is second to none. I recommend the shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. read more

It's okay. Not that good on customer service and it did take longer than expected for our food to arrive. But, on the plus side, the food was delicious! I would say this would be at least a four star review if it had better customer service. read more

Metro Dinner by far is the best place to eat. Their soup of the day is absolutely good and the a mouth of food they serve is enough for 2. The Waffle is the best waffle we ever had. There service is very fast. read more
