We were in the area craving Thai food and stumbled upon Mengrai Thai as it was the closest spot nearby. The restaurant is tucked inside an old brick building with creaky wooden floors--definitely giving off "hole-in-the-wall" vibes, in the best way. When we arrived, it seemed like they were preparing to close, but upon seeing us, they kindly flipped the sign back to "open" and welcomed us in. We ended up being the only guests in the restaurant, which gave it a quiet, personal feel. Our server--who also appeared to be the manager--was very enthusiastic and clearly passionate about the food and service. While friendly, he was a bit overly talkative and unfortunately stood quite close while speaking, which resulted in some unintentional spittle landing on my arm. A little uncomfortable, but it seemed unintentional. Now, the food: flavorful and satisfying. The curry and drunken noodles were the highlights of our meal--well-balanced and aromatic. I also ordered a cranberry drink based on the server's recommendation, but unfortunately, it wasn't for me--overly tart and oddly flavored. I wouldn't get it again. I was hoping for a bit more from this local restaurant. The staff was friendly but the service was a bit slow, even though the restaurant was quite empty. The interiors is very unique and felt homey. The food was quite disappointing and left a lot for the imagination. The chicken satay had lacked salt, the red curry (house special) was bland and had more pineapple and lychee than meat, and the drunken noodles was too saucy for a fried noodle dish. This spot just because a favourite of mine for Thai food. They have a wonderful prix fix menu if you can't decide what to try but I highly recommend the pumpkin soup. The crunch on the crispy beef is delicious and addictive. They do a great lychee martini (at a great price might I add). The service was top notch and had a very friendly and family feel. Wanted to try a new Thai place and found these guys. Great food, portions felt a little small compared to some of the other common Thai restaurants but tasted incredible. Got medium spice on the drunken noodles and it was as perfect. The curry was served in a pineapple which was really cool. It had lychee and mango in it - a little too sweet for my liking. When entering, the decor looks very outdated and old but has some Thai culture embedded. The owner is friendly and quite talkative in general and very proud of promoting charity cause. Here was what we ordered: Taro Yam Rolls-$8.5 - the standard kind crispy spring roll but with yam filing w/ sweet chili sauce Crispy Morning Glory-$15 - fried up green bean pieces but its morning glory with again sweet chili sauce. Mains got the red curry chicken lychee pineapple-$21.5 - There was sweetness to the curry, but unsure if its the lychee, but wish there was more curry sauce. Stripe Bass-$24 - 3 pieces of cut up with a brown sauce base. Good taste, but for the price I guess is standard in Toronto. Got complimentary Thai ice tea which we found wasn't overly sweet so that's good. Also got the pandan cococut cupcake which we can say is pretty moist and tasty. This Thai restaurant has been on my list to check out for a long time. Unfortunately I do not visit the East End, therefore was never in the area. Luckily I was able to check this place out this past weekend! We started with the taro rolls and the crispy morning glory with golden pumpkin soup. I was sad to see that there was only one crispy morning glory on the dish. Thankfully the golden pumpkin soup was absolutely delicious and made up for the lack of fritter quantity. Since it was the first time, we ordered the chefs pad Thai to try. On the waiters recommendation we also ordered the braised curry lamb with peach. We were blown away by the curry lamb, such depth of flavor, tender meat, sweetness from the peach and a gentle growing heat with each bite. Unfortunately, the pad Thai was bland in comparison. We fix the issue by adding the curry to the pad Thai and enjoying it together. Would go back for the curry lamb alone! read more

A nice cozy restaurant that is hidden behind a pretty interesting door. Leading up to the entrance there are some very unique decor that definitely livens up the place. However, here are the major cons... we are a group of 8 and had to wait for around 45 mins even after a reservation.. which of course was a downer! The owner was sweet and gave us free apps but as a diabetic delaying my meal (especially on my birthday celebration) was a bit of an issue as it causes health problems! I hope restaurants can understand folks make reservations for a reason and for diabetics its because they need to eat at a certain time! Also, the service was a bit sketchy at the start as I think they had over booked and their staff was really stretched! Hello. We went back to Mangrai last night for a treat, for in the past it had been quite enjoyable. Yes the neighbourhood is terribly run down, and the building is dilapidated- all definitely not the responsibility of the restaurant. However, it foreshadowed the dining experience. The greeting we received for not having a reservation was less than warm or welcoming. The place had 3 larger tables seated, a few occupied smaller tables, but had 8 empty pair tables. We were eventually seated, and menus were unceremoniously plopped down. One of the wait staff came by asking for my name, and phone number. When I asked why, the response was a mumbled "for the bill". I gave my name, and invented a phone number - next time I will give a pizza places number, and see if they catch on. The ambience was dim lighting, curtains at the entrance to help ward off the cold as the door was opened. Well worn chairs, typical sticky vinyl table covering, and a single fork and napkin awaited. I hope all food was bite sized, and easily went on the fork, otherwise I would have to get my fingers into my food - not good. No other seasonings were present, a glass of water was proffered, and the obligatory shrine was present. It had a layer of dust on it, the walls had dents, nicks, food bits, and were in need of both a good scrub and fresh paint. The floor was well worn, but looked decent. Overall the atmosphere was once pleasant, but is now tired and in desperate need of a scrub and update. The music was nicely soft, one could easily talk over it without raising the volume in the place, and was tasteful. It would have been nicer if it was contemporary Thai music - I don't like Coldplay. The menus were about 10 years old. No, the prices were not scribbled out, and re-entered in pen, but they were well thumbed, and falling apart. We had to collect their pages a few times. If this is the initial presentation of the place - we should have clued in. The server that took our order was not a child, but not grey of hair either - they should have known better in communicating with patrons for their order. The order was not repeated, and up-sells of rice, and appetizers never stopped - mind you maybe they knew something we did not. We ordered the Mango salad, which promptly arrived. Almost snapped our fingers, and poof it was there. Nicely presented strips of fresh Mango in a cute wooden bowl, with a few modest slivers of coloured bell pepper, and purple onion. The bottom held a few leaves of spinach. Sadly, it was inedible. I did not have lunch, so I did eat a good bit of it, but 1/3rd went back. The Mango was under ripe, hard, woody, and many pieces were not tasting very healthy at all. Not a sourness, just a spoiled fruit flavour. The spinach was bruised, and had a similar off-taste as well. We did not finish it, and my partner spat their portions out on to their napkin, putting everything back in the bowl. When the server came to collect the bowl, they said nothing, scooped it up, and trundled off. And as typical Canadians, we said nothing. The meal came a short while later. Not overly long, decent amount of time. The Chef's noodles looked great - 3 shrimp in there, and a bit of chicken. The beef green curry looked lovely, and had aubergine in it - nice treat! Well that is where it ended. The food was largely flavourless. I know traditionally Canadians shy away from spice - definitely not in our case. The food was bland, flavourless, and unexciting. My guest wanted some coconut rice to accompany the curry (we were told!), and they had to get up from their seat to get someones attention to place an order for the fancy coconut rice. The rice came again almost instantly, a cute presentation of a silver bowl, and the obligatory crappy Chinese plastic soup spoon. The rice was long grain rice, which was ready in 5 minutes - if you get my drift. Again flavourless, and at $4 a bowl, not worth it! Towards the end of the meal fingers were used to get curry soppy ride, and noodle tendrils on to one's fork. Largely this was poor tasteless food court food (marginal at best), at a grossly exaggerated price. The server came with our bill saying that if we paid cash, there would not be any taxes, and that would include the tip - assuming we wanted to give one for the lovely service/ambience/flavourful food. 1 inedible salad, 2 main dishes, and plain white rice was just under $80 as printed on the receipt. Not even a thank you when we paid in cash, and the receipt was swiftly zipped away - we had to chase the server down for a copy. As the artists have been pushed out of the rest of the building, it is only a matter of time before Mangrai is forced to close. As with all life - there is a beginning, a middle, and an end. Mangrai is apparently in their death throes. Best avoided for it kept us up all night as well!!!! read more

Must visit ! I was not expecting such a serene ambience. It's like you've been transported out of the city. So cozy with dinner over candle light. One downside is the bathroom which needs upgrades ASAP. We over estimated the amount we should order for two and ended up with enough food to feed an army. Portions are VERY generous! Keep that in mind. My highlights were the lemongrass soup and sasi curry. 10/10. Such complex flavours that hit you in different ways each time you take another taste. The soup was perfect for the bitterly cold weather. The service was exceptional and the owner came by to greet us and share fun stories ( and photos!) of his very famous guests. 10/10. The menu is a bit overwhelming as it contains numerous dishes you are not used to seeing at a Thai restaurant. They are clearly focused on expanding our Thai palate and moving us beyond our comfort zones. For example there's a grilled fish dish cooked with tamarind that I want to try next time. Located in the east end of Toronto area which can be sketchy at night. The place dim outside didn't look like a restaurant. Once entering, the place appeared old and over stuffed with decor and randomness. It wasn't welcoming. At least we got to pick a table away from the main entrance. What seemed like the manager, started talking to us way before we can even open the menu or settle down on our seats. He told us about their $30 dining experience of small dishes to share. Maybe all of that should have been presented on a nice menu like pre-fix menu during winterlicious month. Too much talking that I just wanted to look at the menu myself. We both ended up ordering a dish each. My partner had the traditional pas Thai with chicken that was not sweet at all so it was a nice change. The portion was not large at all. The presentation or the plates could be modernized. My green curry with chicken had a nice coconut milk broth. I didn't bother with the rice. It had a spicy kick to it which was delightful. They used canned corn and bamboo. It would have been nice to use all fresh ingredients since the chef (apparently) is famous or popular. I felt it was overrated just because of the chef. Once we were almost done our dishes, the manager gave us a small bowl of spicy Thai beef salad to try. That was nice of him since we didn't end up ordering because the price changed on us. Randomly stumbled upon this place after seeing it had good reviews, I went in on a Wednesday night and were seated immediately. We started with the Royal Thai Lobster Soup, served in a coconut. I attended a corporate cooking class event here. It involved breaking into groups of 3-5 and learning 1-2 dishes, then congregating for a family style dinner (with food made by the chef). We all had a great time and the food (made by the chef) was delicious! I felt like the night could have been a bit more organized - there was some waiting around, and shuffling from one place to another around the restaurant. However, I appreciated how much attention we got from who I believe was the owner and his family, and I left with a full stomach and full heart. We got takeout from here the other day. I ordered the Sasi pad thai, because I figured it would be closest to Thai street style pad Thai, I but requested no prawns in mine. It came with shrimps anyway. Oh well. The pad thai was tasty, but not my favourite in the world. We also ordered a starter combo (2 taro rolls, 2 spring rolls, 2 Bangkok dumplings), coconut rice, red curry with chicken, and the chef's massaman lamb curry with peach. The red curry was quite tasty, and similar to what I've tasted in Bangkok. The lamb massaman curry was delicious, especially with the peach, which added a beautiful elegance and a flavour that complimented the rich massaman curry taste with the heavy lamb. The flavours of it all danced harmoniously. The veggie appetizers were nice, and it was cool that we got to taste several things; the coconut rice was subtle. Overall, I'd return for the peach curry. That was delicious. To me, the pad thai wasn't great, although it is cool that the restaurant has two other pad thais as well (a tomato one and a classic, pale one). read more

The initial atmosphere wasn't impressive. The owner was going around to customers showing photos on his cell phone of celebrities who have dined there. Jokingly I introduced myself and asked him if he wanted my picture. After dinner he had his wife, the chef, come and sit beside me to take pictures of her and I and the rest of our table. We brought friends here to celebrate a birthday and made a reservation. We were seated right away and I loved that there were so many veg, vegan and gf options. We ordered mango salad, veg appetizer platter and regular appetizer platter to start. These were good but the peanut sauce was bland. For mains we ordered a fish curry, beef with pomegranate, veg curry with pineapple and lychee and pad thai as we asked our waiter for the most popular items. The veg curry was spicy and had lots of tofu. The fish and beef were enjoyed by the carnivores in our party....they said each curry had a very nice flavour. The pad thai was ok. Later we overheard Allan (owner) telling the next table that the drunken noodles was very good.....oh well, next time! Allan came and chatted with us and told us about all the celebs that eat there, their charity foundation in Bangkok, his wife (chef) Sasi and her win on a cooking competition, etc. He took pictures for us and added us to his fb. We felt like this was something he probably does with most customers but we loved him and his friendliness.....great self marketing! They gave my friend the mango cheesecake for her birthday and a glass of champagne...plus a drink for her hubby:)) Very generous! OUR ORDER: "2 course" Prix Fixe Lunch ($5 extra if you want to share) 1st course - 2 tiny deep fried Spring rolls that were crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside, 1 segment (see pics) of a fresh Spring roll that was bland, and a bland mango salad. Mango wasn't fully ripe so it was neither sweet nor sour. 2nd course - Green Curry Chicken with rice. The taste of the bamboo shoots overshadowed everything. Chicken Pad Thai (Tamarind base) - chicken was tender but dish was very bland and missing the crushed peanuts. Had to ask for extra lime and chili pepper flakes to try and jazz it up a bit. Thai iced tea - very creamy but weak tea flavor. The restaurant is very cozy with beautiful artwork but the view from the front windows are of someone's house and a parking lot, better to sit further inside the restaurant. Also even though the lights are dimmed, it's noisy even when it's not even packed. Our server was polite, very knowledgeable of the menu and attentive. Pumpkin soup and fried morning glory: the pumpkin soup was super thick and delicious, and the fried morning glory has a super special texture. The mains we choose the lychee curry for the set (it comes with rice if we order it from the set and doesn't come with rice if it was ordered alone), and the chef Sasi's pad Thai. Both were super delicious and special. The lychee in curry was such a nice touch. And the shrimp paste in pad Thai was super creative and delicious as well. The cheesecake at the end was a surprise. By far one of my favorite Thai restaurant!! When you're there it feels like home. They really try to get to know you like family. They'll ask for your name and will talk to you like you've known them you're whole life! The food is absolutely spectacular, anything you order you'll love! Waiters/waitresses really help you with the best possible choice, they'll give you honest answers about every dish. If it's cold outside and you need to warm up, their Tom yum soup is amazing! It's just the right amount of spice and has the perfect lemon balance. I like mine with shrimp but their chicken is also very good! The royal Thai pineapple fried rice and amazing! They serve it in an actual pineapple If you're in a curry-type of mood I'd recommend the elegant Panang curry with beef. The red curry is also a great choice, but I really prefer the panang curry. As far as noodles, you can go wrong with the Pad Thai. It's more sweet than spicy. Now for me I'm a drunken noodles kind of girl, but if you're like me and like your noodles spicy and juicy I'd skip it from here.
