We love diners and had passed by here a few times on the way downtown. It was before my time but the show "Alice" was filmed here. It's a greasy spoon no frills diner. We ordered an Arizona skillet which is potatoes, with peppers, sausage, bacon, cheese topped with your style eggs. We also got 2 eggs over easy with bacon which came with their home fries and toast. The food was decent, nothing to write home about but not horrible. The toast had a orange cream looking butter. I'm not sure if it was margarine or butter but it wasn't pretty looking and we didn't eat it. Don't need the extra carbs anyway. The prices were on par and service was quick and friendly. Overall, nice to try out a new spot but plenty other diners that have amazing food closer to home. read more

I stopped by this retro 1960s diner 2 days ago and enjoyed the experience. Since the Barbie phenomenon is happening, I brought along my Curvy Barbie "Andra". I opted for breakfast before going to the nearby county fair. I ordered a combo of scrambled eggs, a stack of 2 pancakes, hash browns, and orange juice to dine in and take home a doggie bag (of course- can't eat all that generous portion in one sitting ;)) I'm always letting establishments take the time to prepare and cook food, which is appreciated for both professionals and consumers. Eggs and hash browns were cooked solid, pancakes were thick and tasted like sea salt was added to help reduce the common blandness of flour. Juice was orange-y. Overall a delicious meal. Exterior and lot gave off nostalgia of the bygone days. Being situated at Grand Ave added to that appeal. Interior appeared intentionally unchanged that I felt like I entered a 1970s Alice TV set. There were actually a cook and 3 waitresses. Cook was accompanying. Waitresses were nice but a bit behind on attention since they were busy cleaning here and there. Floor was a bit sticky. Table and rest room were clean. Price was reasonable for quality and portion. I had been curious about this iconic Phoenix staple and had to sample the experience. I'm glad I did and may return in the future with an out- of-town friend who's also a fan of this fantastic TV series. BTW, just so you know, Alice was never filmed at the diner- only at a Hollywood studio lot. The cast never visited- just sent autographs. Saw this place on TV for years. Drove by it for many years as I worked in the area. Just never went in to eat. A couple of months ago a friend and I stopped in for lunch.It was good enough for us to make a second trip. The place is larger inside than it looks from outside. This place has been here for many years and its shows on the outside and inside. Not dirty, worn. Red checkered curtains in the windows. The waiters all wear tee shirts that says Mel's Dinner. Both times we have been there the place has a lot of people eating. I suspect many are regulars. Only thing I can comment on is the burgers. Both times mine have been very good. Thick and juicy. For the price they are a good deal. Hamburger and fries was more that I should eat at a sitting. Many other options on the menu. Probably why many people in the area eat there. LOVE Mel's! We make a stop here every time we visit Phoenix. Their hours are a bit off and they don't have them posted on their doors so we have come a few times when it said they would be opening online and they weren't opened but if you aren't looking to show up right when they open you should be good. It's just the most classic greasy spoon dinner. Good service great food for the price. Only thing I don't get there anymore is the biscuits and gravy the gravy just has no flavor. read more

I finally made a long overdue visit. I was a big fan of the tv show. It felt smaller than the tv show I remembered as a kid but again that's television. The place has tons of photo memorabilia. The staff is friendly, the portions are large and tasty. Best of all the prices are quite reasonable and inflated like other places. Can't wait to come back again. read more

My French Toast was salty, I have no idea what the product was that appeared to be butter and the fake maple syrup had no maple syrup flavor. Mel's Diner has been on my bucket list for years and it was even better than I had imagined. The food is so good and freshly crafted. I had their special Banana Belgian waffle. It was so light and fluffy and covered with freshly cut bananas. It came with sausage and eggs that were perfectly made. My husband had their eggs, sausage links and home fries with their fresh salsa. He loved his meal as well. We just can't say enough about how great the food tasted. All of the employees were very kind and friendly. They took their time to walk us through their menu choices. We could tell that everyone LOVED being a part of Mel's Diner. We even had the chance to meet the owner. Guests were asking if they could call him Mel, and he got the biggest kick out of that. He loves sharing with guests this famous landmark. It was so fun to see the original sign outside from the show Alice in person. The inside is very open with lots of booths and counter seats. There are great photos of the cast from Alice framed all over the walls. It was truly a fun and yummy experience that we highly recommend making a trip to Mel's Diner. Well, fulfilled our promise to come back for lunch!! We arrived at about 11am, just as lunch was beginning. I got their BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, which is listed as "absolutely DELICIOUS"...and, it definitely was!!! I got a side of cole slaw (it was so creamy and not too sweet) and a bowl of their soup of the day, which was chicken noodle (very, very good). Hubby was trying to decide what to get, but chose the exact same breakfast he had last week...LOL! He said everything was just as good this time and announced that we'll just have to come back again soon so he could finally try their lunch. I will be very happy to go back again, because there are some other lunch items I wanna try. But, it'll be hard not to get the pulled pork again...yummy!! read more

Wasn't let down. Looks and feels like a piece of history and my childhood. Had Biscuit and Gravy breakfast...lite, tasty, exactly what i expected to have. Got a bowl of Mel's chili to go. I love old buildings and am a history buff. I had been wanting to come here for years now, more for the theater history than the food per say. I enjoyed my talk with the amazing server Rebecca ( upped star for service) and got a standard breakfast. 2 eggs, sausage and of course I had to get the Grits. I blew them a kiss for old time's sake. lol It was a cool way to spend a few hours reveling in PHX local history. The building is so retro 60's cool and I love all the cups on the wall. The food was your pretty average diner fare. I liked the sausage links. I will go back for lunch some day. A friend just told me their chicken noodle soup is really good. Food and service was fantastic! Only busting a single star because the place could use some TLC. Not just a cleanup, but more of a renovation. I'm not busting them on this, but I did hope to see it more like how it was in the show Alice. Love their breakfast! And even when they are busy the staff there work hard to get you taken care of. My eggs are never undercooked which is hard to find these days and their collection of mugs is definitely a story. When I walked in, the girl said "sit where ever you want". The odor is old and stale....no food. I ordered the famous chicken noodle soup. It was sadly not edible at all. Watery, canned chicken, fatty oil on top with broken tiny pieces of 'noodles'. The silverware was dirty....like it still had food on it and was only wiped, along with sticky tables. Ok I'm 50 and for those of you that don't remember the tv show "Alice" (On for 9 seasons from'75 - '86) that shouldn't stop you from driving by this place without stopping in. It's not just the sign out front or it's history itself that's nostalgic it's the atmosphere and the service. I'm not over exaggerating when I say this "They treated me like a regular" and it was my first time there. We sat at the bar. Because for me really, that's the only place to sit when your at a diner. Well we totally love this place!! The husband and I went on Sunday and it was just like the TV show Alice that we so fondly remember. A classic American diner. It was not busy, everyone was so friendly! We got our food promptly and it was hot and plentiful. I got the chicken fried steak with home fries, 3 eggs and 2 pancakes. Husband got the 3 egg breakfast with extra bacon. The bacon was crisp and hickory smoked. The chicken fried steak was perfectly fried and smothered in country gravy, no sausage. All was well flavored and seasoned. The home fries were crisp, peppery perfection and the pancakes light and fluffy and just a hint of buttermilk. Cost for both of us with tip was $30.
