Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast with brown gravy, because they haven't received their shipment of white gravy..? WTF? Not good.
    Mike M.

Despite my previous experience, I came back a couple times as Mel's Diner is further away. I don't remember what I ordered last time I was here, but I remember that it was good enough to warrant another trip. Well, today was not good. I ordered the Chicken-Fried Steak breakfast. I should have known better when the waitress said they hadn't received their shipment of white gravy, and all they had was brown gravy. White gravy is butter, flour, and milk. It's just about the simplest thing for a kitchen to make, and they get it in a box. Worst yet, they can't make any from scratch while they're out of the boxed stuff..? I'm going to guess the brown gravy came out of a box, too, because it was unremarkable. The CFS was clearly frozen. Very chewy, and not much flavor or crunch. The menu used to be colorful and full of photos. Now it looks like the first Microsoft Word Template someone clicked on. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the hash browns were decent. My guest had the corned beef hash and she was too full to finish it. So, I tried it and it was pretty bland, and looked like it came out of a can. I'll give them a second star for knowing how to cook an egg, but next time I feel like a good breakfast on this side of town, I'll just go to Denny's. Denny's is much better than Kay's.

I met one of my friends here for work. It is located a little bit out there West of Phoenix. Looks like an industrial area but the people who work out there need to eat too. Many people have posted pictures of the menu but I zoomed in on a couple interesting sandwiches ASU Sundevil pastrami and USC Trojan pastrami (see photo), both are likely good but I was there for breakfast so I got the chorizo omelet which was very tasty with good flavor. Not too spicy but very good. Good option if you happen to be in the area. The staff was very friendly as well.

I had family in town and took us all out to Kay's for breakfast on a weekend morning. It was my first time there and I'd been wanting to try it as I'd heard about this place from other locals who frequent. I personally ordered the scrambled eggs, hash browns and tomato instead of meat item. Also pancakes (my fave) it was huge and I finished those the next day (still very delicious). The parking lot makes you feel like you couldn't imagine a restaurant in this location but it's also large. I would imagine this place can get busy for breakfast and lunch if you go during peak times. Employees were helpful and attentive, food was plentiful. Would I go back? Yes, gotta get some more pancakes. lol

    Very good food and service

This has been by far thee best place for breakfast. Which for me is a gem hidden in Laveen. Definetly surprise by the menu and quality service. Thank you

I ordered the tamale breakfast special. The red tamale was a little dry. But the beans were amazing. The hash browns were also delicious.

Such a hidden gem restaurant that my husband found! He's driven by this restaurant many times and one day took us here to grab breakfast. One thing I loved was that you can order most items anytime of the day. My husband and daughter got breakfast while I got lunch at 9am. All of our food was delicious and my husband said they have the best eggs Benedict he's ever had! So if you like those, definitely try them out! The staff is super friendly and we even met the owner, he was the sweetest and had a pleasant conversation with my husband and daughter. We felt like family here as I'm sure many others do! They might be busy but orders get out to you in a timely manner. Their restaurant and bathrooms are clean and theirs plenty of parking and trucker parking available.

    Sorry for the glare

Kay's Kafe doesn't look like much when you pull in, kinda like someone had the bright idea to put a restaurant in the middle of an industrial area. Thank You to whoever had that idea and saw it through. Hearty, stick to your bones, diner fare staples that are full of flavor is what you get. Pair a meal with a hot cup of coffee and you'll leave with a fully belly, energized to take on the day.

We arrived at 7:50am, hoping for a quick breakfast before a doctors appointment at 9:10am around the corner. It took the waitress forever to come to our table because she was the only one up front. Totally reasonable. By 8:20am there was over 18 guests and still just her trying to seat people, give them beverages, make espresso, input orders, and basically manage everything. Again. Totally reasonable why things were taking longer. She was hauling a** and working hard. So imagine my utter dismay when I saw a man, probably the manager or owner just standing there like a jacka** not helping her but making polite greetings and conversation to the people at the bar. Utterly unacceptable to watch your employee or someone struggle with that many tasks and not do a darn thing about it. Looking so proud and like everything is just dandy as you lean against the doorframe doing absolutely nothing. Our waitress gets a five star rating but this one star reflects the behavior of whoever that owner/manager is letting staff drown around him. Shame on you.

I did really like it, but noticed it was stronger than what I am used to. So I ended up working a couple hours at the shop and completely let my drink get cold. When i was about to leave, I asked a staff for a cup of ice since my "hot latte" wasn't hot anymore. She had the most sweetest kindest attitude about it and asked me if the drink was too strong for me and offered to add oatmilk to make it iced and into my liking. She really made my day and I got to enjoy my drink just how I like it!

"Were they prepared prior or at a commissary?" He replied "No. All the food is made fresh on site in the full kitchen just down the hall." While sitting and taking in the pretty skylights, I noticed other patrons working on their laptops in the elevated seating area. Some conversing with others including Mark Tarbell, himself! Am I ever happy that we picked the grilled steak burrito for $19 and the in house made potato chips and dill dip for $8. I loved the generous portion of juicy steak with charred tomatoes, arugula and potatoes. The wild mushrooms and caramelized onion perfected the taste for what was the best beef burrito for me! The potatoes were cubed to a perfect ratio. Not too large where other places have big chunks of the starch that dominates sections of the wrap. Not too shabby was the fresh cooked kennebec potato chips and tasty dip. The chips were a bit greasy but still crisp and the dill dip was tasty. This was my first stop, and I'm so glad it was. The café itself is absolutely charming--spacious, clean, and with plenty of seating. But what stood out immediately was the customer service. From the moment I walked in, everyone was smiling. You can tell this is a team that genuinely enjoys what they do. Despite the line, they were patient, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. Their coffee selection is wide but not overwhelming. . I went with the matcha latte with pistachio, which was well-balanced. When it came to food, I couldn't decide between my usual go-to (broccoli and cheese quiche) or the bacon, spinach, and cheddar--or even the tomato basil, which sounded amazing. I asked the barista/ server to choose for me, and she recommended the bacon, spinach, and cheddar. It did not disappoint. The crust was thick and perfectly done, and the filling was layered and flavorful--just incredible. I also ordered an ube muffin and was given a complimentary lemon tart (no complaints here!). The ube muffin was exactly what you'd hope for--lightly sweet with a delicate blend of vanilla, nutty notes, and a hint of coconut. The lemon tart was perfectly balanced--bright, slightly tart, and complemented beautifully by the whipped topping. Before leaving, I grabbed a loaf of sourdough to go. They even offered to slice it for me--small detail, big win. And I have to say, coming from San Francisco, I do not say this lightly: this is hands-down some of the best sourdough I've had outside of San Francisco. Honestly worth the 45-minute drive just for that alone. I come from a background in the restaurant industry, and great service doesn't go unnoticed. Everyone here was attentive, kind, and truly invested in the experience they provide. The customer service alone is worth the visit. They so offer Panini's and daily soups.. Their menu changes daily. They also offer Louisiana hot sauce so someone knows what they're doing. I can't wait to bring my kids here next time. We will absolutely be back.
