1/31/26: Kay's is a hidden gem -- and I mean hidden. It's location is not very "restaurant-y" in that it is located in an industrial area. There's what looks to be an auto junk yard to the east, a truck service place to the north, and a couple other mechanical (?) businesses immediately off 43rds Ave. We pulled in to a driveway paved with ornamental bricks, a javelina in the fake grass area (yes, it was a fake javelina), and a fairly busy cafe. We popped in this particular Saturday around 10 am & it was pretty bustling yet we were able to be seated immediately. One of the servers quickly brought us waters, and shortly after that another came to take our order. We ordered a mango tea & peach lemonade, which came in large mason jars. My lemonade was the best of the two (it had a stronger flavor). The meals we got were the orange cream cheese stuffed French toast (they had to sub strawberries) and the big Kay's Texas burrito. When the gal returned w/ our drinks, she was extremely thoughtful & brought me mini tastings of the red & green sauce because I couldn't decide which to choose. All of it was delicious. Despite my previous experience, I came back a couple times as Mel's Diner is further away. I don't remember what I ordered last time I was here, but I remember that it was good enough to warrant another trip. Well, today was not good. I ordered the Chicken-Fried Steak breakfast. I should have known better when the waitress said they hadn't received their shipment of white gravy, and all they had was brown gravy. White gravy is butter, flour, and milk. It's just about the simplest thing for a kitchen to make, and they get it in a box. Worst yet, they can't make any from scratch while they're out of the boxed stuff..? I'm going to guess the brown gravy came out of a box, too, because it was unremarkable. The CFS was clearly frozen. Very chewy, and not much flavor or crunch. The menu used to be colorful and full of photos. Now it looks like the first Microsoft Word Template someone clicked on. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the hash browns were decent. My guest had the corned beef hash and she was too full to finish it. So, I tried it and it was pretty bland, and looked like it came out of a can. I'll give them a second star for knowing how to cook an egg, but next time I feel like a good breakfast on this side of town, I'll just go to Denny's. Denny's is much better than Kay's. read more

I forgot about Kay's over in the middle of nowhere, so my wife and I came for breakfast. We arrived at 11 on a Saturday and it was 1/3 full in the main room. We were greeted and seated right away. Once we perused the menu, I decided upon the Irish Eggs Benedict and an iced tea, while my wife got the Chorizo and Eggs plus a coffee. In all, it came to $39.64 plus tip. Our meals arrived in short order. Both plates were overflowing with food, as usual. I had asked for my hash browns to be crispy but they were cooked to an average crispness, while my wife's were just warmed. My Benedict was good, not great. The hash, eggs and muffin were all fine. However, the hollandaise sauce was so bland. I saw them pour it on from a plastic jug, sadly. Better visit than the last one. Oh, and Kay was very pleasant this time. read more

Owner of restaurant is very rude. She's always yelling for the servers across the room. And she raised her voice at us before sitting us. The waitresses on the other hand are total sweethearts. I was fooled by the location due to it being hidden inside metal fabrication parking lot. (I could be wrong be a different business) and the area being mostly other kinds of fabrications and a landfill but the place was very clean and a nice dinner feel to it! I first had their breakfast burrito and I give it a solid 8/10. The only reason I give it 3 stars is because I ordered a steak sandwich and I was let down due to it being very bland, it was just a slice of steak with bread and lettuce on the side. I met one of my friends here for work. It is located a little bit out there West of Phoenix. Looks like an industrial area but the people who work out there need to eat too. Many people have posted pictures of the menu but I zoomed in on a couple interesting sandwiches ASU Sundevil pastrami and USC Trojan pastrami (see photo), both are likely good but I was there for breakfast so I got the chorizo omelet which was very tasty with good flavor. Not too spicy but very good. Good option if you happen to be in the area. The staff was very friendly as well. read more

I had family in town and took us all out to Kay's for breakfast on a weekend morning. It was my first time there and I'd been wanting to try it as I'd heard about this place from other locals who frequent. I personally ordered the scrambled eggs, hash browns and tomato instead of meat item. Also pancakes (my fave) it was huge and I finished those the next day (still very delicious). The parking lot makes you feel like you couldn't imagine a restaurant in this location but it's also large. I would imagine this place can get busy for breakfast and lunch if you go during peak times. Employees were helpful and attentive, food was plentiful. Would I go back? Yes, gotta get some more pancakes. lol read more

Such a hidden gem restaurant that my husband found! He's driven by this restaurant many times and one day took us here to grab breakfast. One thing I loved was that you can order most items anytime of the day. My husband and daughter got breakfast while I got lunch at 9am. All of our food was delicious and my husband said they have the best eggs Benedict he's ever had! So if you like those, definitely try them out! The staff is super friendly and we even met the owner, he was the sweetest and had a pleasant conversation with my husband and daughter. We felt like family here as I'm sure many others do! I found this cute little spot on Yelp. I was meeting a friend for breakfast and this was the closest place with the best reviews. I was really surprised to find this place nestled among and industrial spot. Definitely a hidden gem. It is truly a mom and pop operation, those are my favorite ones. The owner is sitting in an executive chair; when you walk in, to the left. He has a friendly smile and greets everybody who enters and wishes them their safety on their way out. He reminds me of my granddad. I just wanted to hug him. Their daughter and granddaughter are the waitresses. I ordered a red tamale(pork) it came with beans, hashbrowns and eggs. I ordered mine soft scrambled. The beans were some of the best beans I've had in a long time. Definitely homemade. I could eat just a bowl of those alone. This spot is tucked away where you would probably miss it if it wasn't for a couple of road signs pointing you to them. They serve traditional breakfast and lunch food and everything I have had to date has been very good. My family has started going to Kay's every Saturday morning for their menudo. I have eaten a lot of menudo in my day and it is, without a doubt, the best menudo I have ever had. They use top quality ingredients, lots of hominy and their tripe is not the cheap kind that many restaurants use, it is high quality. Their large bowl is enough to satisfy any hearty eater like me. Their breakfast burritos are delicious and omelets are really good too. At the time of this review I just finished my fifth visit to Kay's Kafe. The owner's name is John and he is a one of the most kind and sincere people I have ever met. If you visit here and he is there, you may find him walking to your table and chatting just to make sure everything is to your satisfaction. On my third visit here with my family he started pulling up a chair and telling us some of his stories. This man is all about family and making sure his customers are cared for. He is the kind of man that you would picture when you think of a caring grandpa sharing his life lessons and wisdom with his family. I believe that his family originally immigrated from Mexico before living in California and then settling in Arizona. If you are someone who appreciates good, honest, hardworking people then this place is worth trying. John let us know today that Covid has made a noticeable impact on their business. He is really looking for ways to improve things. The best way I know is to get more people to come to his café. In these trying times, we need to support our local small businesses and help them weather the storm. Please check them out. Disappointing is the best word I could use. I really wanted to love Kay's, it's a cute spot in an industrial area, but it was thoroughly disappointing. I called in a pick up order this morning (a breakfast burrito and a waffle special) When I arrived I could see my food sitting out on a table, but no greeting. After a couple minutes I was told here's a check but no payment taken, after a few more minutes of staring at my food sit on an open table with everyone just walking around it (no masks in sight) I was finally able to pay and pay I did. Twenty one dollars for a breakfast burrito and waffle plate. The burrito was tiny and boring (I asked for Chile and got salsa and it needed it) and I just don't get how they can justify this as a $8.75 burrito. It doesn't make sense. While not bad, there was nothing memorable about it. The waffles had a weird spongy texture, same for the scrambled eggs, which just didn't feel right. The bacon was ok but a bit underdone for my tastes. But again the portions were tiny and it wasn't cheap ($10.75). If this was a Denny's breakfast (at Denny's prices) I don't think I would be as disappointed as I would have known what to expect. This was Denny's food at exorbitant prices with service that didn't make up for any of it. read more

A hidden jewel. I have been wanting to try this place for a while. Getting there is a little...interesting. I almost missed it because I was expecting the building to be right along the street. Rather, there is a sign that directs drivers to drive through an open gate. Once you drive through the gate, you enter an open lot and whala...Kay's Kafe! Look for the sign! Once we got there, we were greeted by a friendly staff. The host was friendly and our server was super attentive. The cherry on top was being greeted by the owner. He moved from table to table and made jokes the whole time. He made us feel right at home! Now to the food. AMAZING!! Hidden gem alert! I didn't think this was a real place. It's literally hidden in a heavy industrial area with no other restaurants in the area. I quite enjoyed the tamale breakfast. Green tamale, eggs and hashbrowns. Can life get any better? Oh yeah, they have the good ice (small round crunchies). Service was fantastic and my drink was always full.
