They deleted my review of them being sexist towards my war veteran Fiance: 25Apr2013 I contacted Mega Sports inquiring about an ammunition purchase. They had the ammo that my fiancé wanted to purchase for Her Pistol and AR-15. They did not say on the phone that it was their store policy to not allow anyone in without a FOID card even if they are a Non Resident. My Fiancé and I are both United States Marines with valid Military IDs, she is an Illinois resident with a valid FOID card. Non-residents are not required to have a FOID card. She was recently injured in a line of duty accident. She broke her Tibia, Fibula, and Heel requiring corrective surgery. She requested that I drive her to Mega Sports due to the fact that her right leg is broken. She could not drive to purchase ammo to legally shoot at a range we have frequented with no problems. Once we arrive at Mega Sports, we are stopped by a Man wearing a hat with a USMC pin on it who tells us he needs to see our FOID cards. My finance presents hers and I explain that I am not an Illinois Resident and per the Illinois State Police ( the issuing body of the FOID card) I am not required to have one. I offer him my valid DL and Military ID, he tells me he won't accept either form of identification and I have to sit at the front of the store while my injured fiancé has to wonder around alone looking for the ammo. She returns to the front of the store with the ammo and attempts to purchase it. The gentleman then told her that she would not be allowed to purchase ammo because it was obvious she was only buying it for me and she had never handled a weapon before. She explains this is not the case and even if it were I am a NON RESIDENT and not required to have a FOID card he tells her that she doesn't look like she's ever handled a fire arm in her life and that she needs to leave. My fiancé is not only a 12 year veteran of the Marine Corps but she is also a 3 time award expert shooter with the M16 and M9 Berretta. She is a Veteran of the Afghan war who served as the Squad Leader for a Female Engagement Team in Helmand Province Afghanistan with 2nd Bn 1st Marines in direct support of combat operations. Her picture is in the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia for actions while serving her country in combat during a time of war. Obviously it's frustrating having contacted the police when moving here to make sure we were obeying these laws to see a Licensed Gun Dealer not know them. Being treated with such unprofessionalism, sexism, and disrespect is intolerable. After we left the store my fiancé explained the conversation she had with the man behind the counter and I got very upset. I called the store, asked to speak to a manager. I began to explain the situation to him he said he had briefly been told about what had happened. I went into further detail where he accused me of changing my story several times stating that it is the law that everyone has to have a FOID card. This is not accurate. I took my 46-year old son, a very experienced shooter (over 25 years) who is a licensed Michigan concealed-carry holder, and a friend who is a retired executive and former Marine to shoot there. There was NO MENTION on their web-site that you COULD NOT USE THE RANGE unless you LIVED in Illinois and have a FOID card!! Also, I was informed that their policy changed on 1/1/2013. MY SON WAS ASKED TO LEAVE THE BUILDING. I would have also left if I did not promise to take my fellow-walker and friend who needed range practice. THERE ARE NO "PUBLISHED" RANGE DISCOUNTS FOR: RETIRED MILITARY, ACTIVE MILITARY, DISABLED AMERICANS, ACTIVE OR RETIRED LAW ENFORECEMENT OFFICERS OR SENIORS. NO "ACTIVE" CELL PHONES are allowed in the building per a series of notices ABOUT THIS AND OTHER ISSUES posted with tape on their inner entrance door. I am an international entrepreneur/businessman and quickly realized that Mega Sports is not the place for solid customer service. On the day that we went, there was a shortage of staff. There were no women sales staff present! Modern signage is definitely needed to inform the public of different issues. I was seeking information about a small, low caliber semi-automatic firearm for my wife. This would be my wife's first gun. The sales associate that talked to me was in-training. His trainer joined our small group and definitely lacked "people-skills." I and my friend who had purchased his first revolver from Mega Sports and used their range once before... proceeded to use the range. We knew their range prices were $ 27.00 for the day with a discount of $10.00 if you purchase their ammunition from them. One must use Mega Sport's targets. There ammo prices are elevated. The physical facilities are excellent. Their web-site is inadequate. I will never return to Mega Sports to shoot or purchase any of their products. My son, my friend and I had visited and shot at ARTICLE II in Lombard. Their range prices are "LOWER" with DISCOUNTS: TO RETIRED MILITARY, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND SENIORS. ALSO, ACTIVE MILITARY SHOOT "FREE".... IF MY MIND SERVCES ME RIGHT. LOCALLY, " RINK'S" IN UNINCORPORATED LOCKPORT IS THE PLACE TO GO FOR ROCK BOTTOM RANGE AND GUN RENTAL PRICES. THEIR PHYSICAL FACILITY NEEDS A "major" DO-OVER. I have not tried a range in Glenwood, Illinois but will do so in the near future. Their range price is $15.00 PER HOUR as of 4/27/13. It is obvious that major shooting complexes are needed in the southwest Chicago-land area and elsewhere in Illinois. However, Illinois' statutory anti-gun history makes such an endeavor extremely problematic. read more

I normally would not take the time out of my day to write a negative review, but my recent experience with Mega Sports caused me to make an exception. I am a law enforcement officer in the state of Illinois; however I live out of state. Due to act H.R.218, I can legally carry a firearm from state to state and am not required to have a FOID card. I have shopped at many Illinois gun stores in my area and have never been given any grief for being an out of state resident. The only caveat to making a firearm purchase is that the firearm must be shipped to an FFL in my home state, who will handle my background check. I am not required to have a FOID card to purchase ammo from an Illinois gun store. Today my wife and I make the hour and a half drive to Mega Sport in hopes of buying a holster for my off duty carry. Upon my wife and I entering Mega Sport, we are both asked by the attendant to provide our FOID cards. I explained to the attendant that I do not have a FOID card because I am an out of state resident and that I am a law enforcement officer. The attendant then tells my wife and I that we are not permitted to enter without FOID cards, per their store policy, law enforcement or not. We took the high road and left without argument. The thought occurred to me to call my A.T.F. Agent buddy to explain the law to the attendant; however I doubt it would have helped. A disclaimer on their website would have easily saved me a trip. I am disappointed that I wasted my time driving to an establishment with such a ridiculous store policy. Their store policy will prevent someone from buying from their establishment who might want to buy something non firearm related, say like a pocket knife etc. Their store policy will also prevent family or friends from entering the establishment who may be new to shooting sports, or possibly there to shop for someone else. Even if I did have a F.O.I.D. card, I certainly would not patronize an establishment that would make my wife wait outside while I shopped. Not to worry Mega Sport, I am certain there are other establishments who would happily accept the business. None the less, I say do not waste your time or money at Mega Sport and drive up to Gat Guns instead. Gat Guns will treat you with far more courtesy and professionalism while providing an excellent selection, to include off duty holsters. read more

Yelp basically has a "program" to eliminate ("filter") negative reviews for business' that pay them.. Look at the ''Filtered" reviews for Mega Sports and you will see that if you give them a low rating that would substantially impact their rating standing on Yelp, you get your review basically thrown in the trash, hidden, and disqualified. Thus not only is Mega Sports a horrible business that wont sell to Cook County residents, when its perfectly legal for them to do so.. but Yelp is a worthless site for anyone to determine the quality of a business using its reviews, because they take payoffs to rig their reviews so that the rating cannot go "too" low, no matter how bad they are or how much they deserve a whole bunch of angry or mistreated customers pouring in and relating negative experiences about them.. I would not trust Yelp in any way beyond possibly using it to simply get a businesses street address or phone number. They trash negative reviews enmasse for businesses that pay them off, and thus are worthless as a ratings or review site. I will repost this same mesage here constantly now, as it repeatedly will be "filtered" (thrown out and hidden) like the other more diplomatic and thoughtful posts that I wasted my time posting on Yelp, only to have all of them hidden. Dont waste your time on this crooked site, or with this particularly odorous business.. I will seek any info I can to get their FFL revoked so they no longer need to deal with the Cook County customers they find so odorous and unpleasant to serve. Being a FFL is a privilege, not a right. A privilege that can be retracted at any time. If Mega Sports owners and staff do not want to serve all legal customers who walk into their shop, we can all help assist them with this 'hardship' they are so pained by, by reporting them constantly to the BATF for infractions we see, inspections, and violations, to get their FFL revoked and allow them to find a enterprise they are better suited for. Filter this all you want yelp. I can make a thousand throwaway email accounts and repost it endlessly. This is the place to go in the Chicago Metro area. They have an incredible range that is without question the cleanest and most modern I have shot at. The staff is incredibly helpful - example- I took my girlfriend shooting who has her own FOID and firearms but wanted to transition to shooting my .45 cal class and she was having a bit of trouble with her trigger control and I could not figure out what she was doing wrong. Out of a kind offer I asked the range-master to overview what I had told her and to see what I did wrong. Turns out she is not a Weaver stance shooter. He had her on the black 5/7 ring paper in two mags and no macho BS was there. It was genuine help. All you have to do is ask and you will get help. They are pros at this. People bash them for being hard nosed but remember- this is a dead serious sport and no mistakes are permissible. If you act like an ass they kick you out as you deserved it. You will get warned then tossed. It's for the customers there who obey the rules and shoot safely I totally support the range rules and would not want an idiot in the lane next to me nor do they. They are very safety aware at all times. Now- inventory. If they don't have it or can't get it in a few days it simply does not exist. I have many arms from my safari rifles, handguns, high-end safes (With a certified locksmith on the books- Aka LockNuts from Plainfield who is incredible) Simply put this is a high end store for responsible, shooters looking for good prices and a fun time in a clean range. If you are Rif-Raf don't even go in. Straw sales are easily seen and will not be done. They have a very intensive re-check system when buying an arm to insure the paperwork is 100% correct. You get a lot for your dollar and a lot of support. Try it once, ask for help if you need it on a purchase or shooting issue and you will be satisfied. I suggest Mega Sports post it's range policies on the outside of their establishment. Prior to frequenting and patronizing this store, lawful FOID card holders should know that Mega Sports denies people under the age of 21 to shoot at the range. Its store policy period. It's not the law. The laws were written to deny sales to minors not the ability to shoot. These are the facts. I will keep my opinions to myself. Employees of the store should keep their opinions to themselves as well when stating the policies. Statements insinuating there is a higher risk of accidents happening when children are shooting is not factual. Fact is, unfortunately accidents happen irregardless of age. To shoot you don't even have to have knowledge of guns or safety. You just have to be with a lawful fire arm owner. Sadly, Mega Sports denied my husband who possesses a FOID card, CCW, is a Certified Range Safety Officer, NRA Member, Ducks Unlimited Member the opportunity to shoot with our son who has been to and passed Hunters Safety and NRA sponsored youth basic pistol and rifle courses. Our sons have had the privilege to participate in the Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt. We have four children who have been trained under the direct supervision of us, their parents who abide and respect the law. Our sons and daughters are knowable, respectful and understanding of how dangerous weapons are. We are disappointed to say the very least that a store that appears well stocked, clean and organized would be so restrictive and less supportive of our youth. What are they saying to our children? So, in oder to shoot at Mega Sports you have to be 21 irregardless of your knowledge on how to shoot. And, by the way you have to buy their targets. What I will say is that I chose not to shop or shoot at an establishment which places restrictions on peoples rights. Please think before you shop here. I have to agree with Joe O. of Frankfort. I have been to Mega several times, and I will tell you I feel like a have a friend in John Clark who works there, and sold me a Ruger LC-9, showed me how to break it down, reassemble, and set me up with ammo to fire on the range. But they can talk guns EXPERTLY to anyone, anytime, and they know their business. I have been to every range within 30 miles of Willowbrook IL, and they are the cleanest and most well stocked I have EVER seen. I had no problems with the staff....the seriousness of their attitude is endemic to the field of gun shops....I haven't been to a gun shop yet (other than a Big Box like Bass or Cabelas) where they have a "jocular and cavalier attitude". They (Megasports and other shops with a range) have to decide who they can trust and who they can't. I am sure they heard every sad story in the world about why someone (who shouldn't have a gun) "needs one". Brother, if they don' t trust you, you ain't gonna get in there, and they have a high liability being in that business, and I totally understand it. It does seem kind of redundant to have to fill out what looks like an FBI BACI application just to shoot in the range (since having a FOID card means you are not a serious violent criminal and you've already passed a BACI), but whatever, it's their shop, and they have a right. They don't want you there if you're a criminal either, and that's OK by me. Anyway, they have always treated me right, and I have been there several times, and I have purchased a nice piece there for concealed carry (not here, UT, FL and AZ permits, and hopefully soon, IL), I've bought plenty of ammo there, and I'm good with them, and apparently they are good with me too! read more

Boycott megasports, they deny ammunition to military and regular citizens just because you don't have a FOID card....I invited my brother and his new bootcamp buddy to go shooting, .not at the megasports facility, which i have just heard horror stories about. We just merely needed ammunition for an ar-15 and a 1911 handgun, i was going to grab some .22 lr's as well for the rifle we were going to shoot at a private facility I figured a nice day of shooting with my brother and friend? Guess not, apparently this isn't the first time, although i had a valid FOID card and my brother(from indiana) as well as his friend (from Wisconsin) both had military I.D. on them. Had i known it would have been such an ordeal i would have left them in the car and purchased the ammo myself, but being the gentlemen we are, each decided to purchase a box or two himself to split the costs....not only did they not allow either of them to purchase the ammunition, when i involved myself in the conversation they told me, although i had already purchased a box of 500 5.56 nato and 1000 .22 lr, that the ammunition would be confiscated, i.e. i wasn't allowed to leave with it... as well as i would have to wait for a refund to my card....REALLY?!?!?!? i will NEVER be patronizing any mega sports stores and hope that someone from thier P.R. department will help them fix the atrocities that are hurting their business model. This is not the first i've heard of this and simply googling mega sports in plainfield you will see various negative reviews towards their handling of military customers. Don't go here! Big beautiful building with lots of space, and lots of inventory. However these guys are the worst. They manipulate pricing on guns day to day based on the political winds. Some call it 'capitalism' ; I call it gouging. They have some new rule where they "FOID card you" upon entry. (this is a building with 10k square foot of retail space. Seriously? carded upon entry? Imagine needing a foid card to enter Cabala's or Gander. Yeah, that's stupid) I was there to buy targets and a gun bag, and was turned away at the door as i didn't have my FOID card on me. As a former long time customer I cannot tolerate the attitudes in this business and probably will no longer shop here. Going forward, my first stop for firearms will be Buds gunshop (online) Mega can't touch his pricing. :( pro's: 1.) large selection of 'in stock' pistol inventory 2.) nice, clean gun range, with many rental guns to choose from 3.) GREAT place to "showroom" as i will never buy another piece here,- please see cons below. CONS: 1.) absolutely the rudest customer treatment possible 2.) customer 'service' evidently doesn't exist here 3.) stupid high price an everything in that store, from range fee's to weapon purchases, you can find anything there, cheaper, anywhere else. 4.) Documented price gouging 5.) they've digitized the Federal Firearms Transfer doc's, (!!?) which scares the heck out of me. Every other gun dealer keeps a paper copy in a locked file. These guys PDF the damm thing and store it on their servers?!?! ....This makes it easy for the hackers or gun grabbers to access. I loved this place a few years ago. Always friendly priced a bit high but for convenience and customer service I'll pay 20-30 more... Then Sandy Hook happened . Prices went through the roof . Foid cards at the door and you had to stand in a line in order to have someone show you a weapon . Which in my opinion is why stand in line to see something you may not buy.. Then I stopped in (within the last 3 months ) I was actually just going to look at some guns and buy somewhere else .. Rather than stand in line but the line format was gone . Showing your foid card to get in was gone and I was greeted by friendly staff. I do agree that every time there is a news worthy event or guns are mentioned in the news there prices go up . I hope they learn that a Glock 17 or a sig is the same as any shop you go to .. It the reason why discount stores don't put other stores out of business . People will pay more for convenience and customer service One small issue was I bought some ammo and because my friend was standing next to me he had to show his foid so I could buy ammo. How ridiculous I understand the need to be safe and careful in an unfriendly gun hating state like Illinois . I hope they get back to where they were and it looks like there on the right track. Mega sports has really got out of control with pricing and rules to use the range ! Not only do they tell you what targets you can or can't use they also tell you what ammo you can or can't use ! When I was there the guy by the range ask's everyone what kind of ammo he had but then tells him him to open up his bag so he could see what he had inside there I'm thinking that's a little much ! They were rude expensive and acted like I should be grateful and blessed to be there ! Well when your prices are way way to high and your rude I think you should be grateful people are even coming there ! I'll stick with rinks I know it's not as up to date but they treat you a lil better it's way cheaper to shoot and it's your average guys that shoot there and they don't tell you what kind of ammo you can shoot or what targets you can use and it doesn't end up costing you $75 to shoot there ! Mega has great range don't get me wrong but it's not worth the hassle or that kiss the ground they walk on to shoot there attitude ! Also it wasn't just the one time it happened to me there it's anytime you go there my neighbor likes it because it's close if rather drive 15 mins more and go to rinks !
