I'd give one star because of their rude manager and antiquated return policy, but I'll add one star back because they are convienent when I'm in a pinch and need something last minute and don't feel like going downtown. My issue is their outdated "store policy" to not credit back your purchase through Apple Pay if you don't have a receipt when you made the original purchase through Apple Pay and can pull up the digital receipt through my bank. (Husband threw the receipt away). When I resisted them giving me store credit the manager rudely tried to tell me "Nordstrom has the same return policy." No ma'am, they absolutely do not have the same return policy. They return via Apple Pay without receipts. So, this negative review is because I bring their clothes back unworn and within two weeks of purchase, yet they are essentially steeling my money by making me come back and buy more items I don't want. Not a fan of the poor customer service or the outdated policy and unfortunately it will keep me from shopping there in the future when I have so many other choices. read more

I think their clothes are attractive for my age group and well priced. Unfortunately the customer service was very lacking. I don't think it was my clothes, even though I stopped by in sweats after an early doctor's appointment. They weren't interested in helping anyone...That's one of the main reason I go to little stores like this, for personalized service. Walked in to look around and see what they had. I was the only person in the store to shop. Everyone else I saw were employees. I was taking my time and just casually looking when an employee rudely told me to get away from the clothes due to the coffee in my hand. No one was in the store and I know how to hold a lidded cup of coffee. No wonder they have no business they chase away anyone that comes in. read more

I agree with someone's recent comment - some of the staff are rude and lack basic customer service skills. I bought a top for my mom and there were two women at the cashier and they weren't friendly at all. They gave an aura like I was bothering THEM. One of the staff members (middle aged to elderly woman) saw me approaching the cashier and said in a rather rude manner, something along the lines of, "do you want to buy that now?" There was another woman (also middle aged or elderly) at the cashier who didn't even acknowledge me. And I said something along the lines of, "it's a gift for my mom. I hope she likes it." And none of them made a comment or engaged in this sort of pleasantries. I didn't take down their names but I will be going back and if I see them again, I'll update this rating because they should be called out on their lack of customer service skills. read more

This store seems they have a class issue & will treat you according to who they think should purchase items from their store. They are so rude that it feels like some kind of social experiment. I'd never heard of this store and was curious what they were about. I felt like I was walking back in time - like back in the 70s/80s. Very nostalgic. IMHO, I don't think this store is for younger/modern shoppers. I saw more "elderly" shoppers so I'm assuming they are the faithful regulars who probably lives in the area and keeps the store afloat. Nonetheless, I love perusing unfamiliar stores with the hope of finding hidden gems! My first visit was a quick one - I walked around for just a few minutes but had to take off to catch the Contra Costa Shuttle. (I was on my lunch break heading back to work.) I came back a few more times and ended up finding a San Francisco t-shirt and sweatshirt. Mind you, the shirt and sweatshirt is a GILDAN brand which is sold at Michael's. That should tell you about the quality and give you an idea of pricing. Fortunately, both were on sale (I wouldn't have bought it at full price). On my recent visit, I found a beautiful butterfly dress for my 9-year-old niece. I knew I picked a winner when both she (and her mom) gasped, mouth wide open. =) I've read a few negative reviews at this location and other locations about McCaulou's staff - in my experience, all of my visits have been pleasant. The 2 stars is because they close at 6pm. People normally get off of work at 5 or 6pm but I guess they don't care to lose any $$. Would it be so difficult to stay open at least 8pm? Not often have a bought any good deals, not even from their clearance racks. Too many dept stores filing chapter 8, who knows maybe they will go down too someday. I've been in here a couple times, usually looking for something totally random in a totally random pinch. Today, Christmas Eve, I went in hoping to get them to wrap a present I bought somewhere else. I mean, they had this girl just chillin in this gift wrapping station. Totally bored. Whole store was completely empty. So I took a shot. I was instantly shot down, they said they'd sell me a box, but absolutely no wrapping items from another store. Okay, I said, what if I buy something and you can put it in the same box? Nope. I have never heard of a store with worse customer service than this one. I am so disappointed in the individuals working here, management, and ownership. My mother has been shopping at this store for years. She is elderly and on a fixed income. She did all of her Christmas shopping here. She went into the store to exchange two items, one for style and one for function. My mother was treated with such disgust by the employees because of her desire to return or exchange the items. She was accused of wearing the one item and they clearly don't stand behind their products. It is quite shocking that this store is still in business. The owner and management clearly don't care about the well being of the store and the employees clearly don't care about other human beings or treating the elderly with respect. This makes me sad because I think the community enjoys independent stores like this one. Please don't spend your money at this store as you will be greatly dissatisfied by the service and poor treatment. read more

Good selection, lousy customer service! I needed to buy a birthday gift. Since McCalou's has a pretty good children's section, I decided to shop here. I bought three items, totaling $43. I asked if they offer gift wrapping - they do. Great. But I only wanted one of the items gift wrapped (I had a gift bag for the other two). I was informed by the cashier that the item I wanted gift wrapped was only $10, and they had a $15 minimum for gift wrapping. I pointed out that I had spent $43 on my purchase - why did it matter that the one thing that I wanted gift wrapped was $10 when I spent $43 in total? She snarkily told me that if I had a problem with the policy, I should take it up with Mr. McCalou. Fine. Mr. McCalou, if you're reading this, your "policy" makes no sense and your employees should be nicer to customers. The next time I have a children's birthday present to buy, I'll go back to Five Little Monkeys, where they will happily gift wrap and are a lot more welcoming. read more

This is a great option for if you need something and don't want to go to downtown and would like a more authentic department store experience. This store is meant for a small town, the clothing may not be the latest or trendiest but there are many good quality pieces for anybody. The prices are a bit high. This place surprises me every time I come here to kill time. Outside, it looks it sells clothes for an older crowd. However, in the middle of the store they have a "Junior" section and they actually have a cute clothing selection from brands such as Billabong, Jolt, Roxy, etc. and they also have shoes as well (for men and women). I love looking through the clearance racks (as I do with every other store haha) because they're usually 45-75% off and I've gotten some cute maxi dresses here before. They surprisingly also have a makeup section with Clinique, Estēe Lauder, and some other high end brands, but I've never checked them out. The ladies working here are always available to help you out and are quite knowledgeable with the newest trends as well. The only problem is that there's no bathroom in here :( read more

Since you took my sister's honest review down, I'll post it once more: I go into this store every week with my 9-month-old daughter and my mom to buy her a Jellycat stuffed animal and a matching book. She absolutely loves them and has a huge collection of them at home. I went in today and we were looking at the Jellycats. My daughter of course wanted to hold them and we handed her a couple, which she ended up accidentally dropping on the floor, and we immediately picked them up and put them back on the shelf. We were there for no more than 5 minutes trying to decide which one to buy for her when we noticed an older woman at the back desk absolutely staring us down. I asked her if we were OK and she replied "sure" in a sarcastic tone. We ended up leaving the store right after. I felt super uncomfortable about the situation so I called the store and asked if there was a problem and if there was a reason for us to be stared down rudely the way that we were. The woman on the phone asked what happened and I explained the situation to her, to which she replied "those aren't really for babies as they're really expensive." First of all, since when is a stuffed animal not for babies? Jellycats literally say on the tag "suitable from birth" and my daughter has been playing with them since she was a newborn. Second of all, the Jellycats are not "really expensive", they're $25, and we were planning on buying one just as we have several times before. She also asked if we were "throwing them around". We are full grown adults, not teenagers, and I can assure you no one was throwing the toys--my daughter dropped a few, which as I said, we IMMEDIATELY picked up. If the worker had a problem she could have asked us not to hand the stuffed animals to the baby rather than staring us down and making us extremely uncomfortable. Needless to say I will continue buying my daughter Jellycats, which ARE MEANT FOR BABIES, at another business. read more

I recently purchased some Christmas gift for friends and family here. The lady helping me was super nice but she was clearly sick, sucking on a cough drop I could smell and hear through both our masks and she sounded congested. Hopefully sick employees are allowed to stay home- during covid especially! I also got my items gift wrapped (a service I'm very appreciative they offer) but the main reason I'm writing this review is because when the gifts were opened, they all still had the price tags on!!! Even after I made sure to ask the young woman if she removed them because she seemed to just place them in the box right away without checking. She assured me she did- with a bit of attitude. I'm hoping it was just an oversight and not intentional... I was mortified and from now on will make sure to remove the prices myself before having them gift wrapped. read more

I had a horrible experience here tonight (12/26/23) around 5:40 p.m. It was so disappointing as I have been coming here since I was a little girl. I am now a 24 year old teacher. I was in the middle section of the store (I believe the junior clothing section) to the left of the shoes. I had items in my hands ready to purchase for a late holiday gift and noticed what I assumed were perfume rollers at the checkout counter while I waited. I picked up the perfume roller and smelled it to see if I wanted to add it to the gift. Almost immediately, an older woman with lighter brown hair approached me and very rudely said to me: "Just take it. Or just give it to me. Put it down. Nobody is going to want it now that you put it up to your mouth". I was so thrown off that I just apologized. She told me she thought I was applying it to my lips. I clarified that I wasn't and assumed she would apologize. She did not and in fact, when I tried to talk to her more about it, she turned her back to me and walked away. I regret not asking for her name and will never set foot in a McCaulou's again. read more

We come here all the time and buy things for the kids. But the lady in the back where the little train set is ...Very rude and unhappy. Every single time I'm in there she looks miserable and is rude and short tempered... you work in the children's section you shouldn't be cranky. Like most posts on here we have been shopping here for years. The women working there think they are something they're not and treat customers terrible. I always make large purchases but the way I was treated this last time I will never go back and I have been a customer for decades. I bought a jacket and eight or nine blouses and the woman stuck them in two boxes and when I picked up the gift wrap she ran back and asked the girl if I was angry that everything was in two boxes. I certainly was disappointed that she did that. Also had a blouse to return and I was treated like a criminal. I'm not too worried about it. when you treat people like that in Walnut Creek your business will close then you will be looking for a job. read more

I had a unfortunate accident with a Cherry/Coke Slurpee while wearing a light color shirt and since I was in the area for a doctor's appointment I ran in here to buy a new one. This is an olde tyme department store. Like one of those stores you would find in a small town - like a rural town that has nothing for miles. It did not have much as "modern fashion". Their demographic is the elderly, Lillian Vernon neighborhood town folk. I did not find anything in the women's area or their "junior" area. Because I do not wear denim shirts, bedazzeled collard shirts, or shirts with Palm trees/sandals/flowers on it or Rayon. I just wanted a regular cotton t-shirt but no such luck! So I found a Hurley shirt in the Men's department (same price I would find in any other store) . No big name brands that I could remember except for Karen Neuburger in the Lingerie department and Carter's in the children's department. Men's did have Hurley and Fox, Kinda sad really. They don't make stores like this anymore because people what more variety and major labels. But the lady who rang up my purchase was very friendly. read more

The last time I ventured into a McCaulous I was 12 years old and had saved my little pennies from babysitting jobs to buy myself some cool threads. Now let's time travel to the present... the minute I walked through the door I was transported back to the nineties- this place is exactly the same! Tan carpeting, dim lights and clothing stuffed in every corner, and semi-disgruntled customer service. But do you know what? I love it! I have found a couple of great items in the Juniors section for a very reasonable price. I have even ventured over the the children's section and nabbed some half price jammies for my wild toddler. McCaulous is no Nordstrom but I think that they embrace who they are- a no-frills, small town store with something for everyone. read more

I shop at McCaulou's on a regular basis. I like to support local businesses, and it reminds me of a store I went to in my youth. Last Saturday, I bought three Mother's Day gifts there. I went back today (less than a week later) to see if they would honor the $10 coupon. I explained that I had it at the time of purchase, but I forgot to use it. I was in a hurry and running out of town. The manager looked at my receipt and said she could only have honored it if it was the day after the purchase. I explained that I was traveling for Mother's Day so I couldn't come in until today. By not honoring the coupon (like other stores do for similar coupons), they just lost thousands of dollars of my business due to the principle of the matter. We will take our business to the new department store that is opening soon at The Orchards in Walnut Creek. read more

THIS McCaulous location (properly spelled name), is one of two stores in Walnut Creek I go to for better or the best QUALITY clothing AND customer service. Unlike a lot of women who post on this site, I am mature and intelligent. McCaulous is not, and will never try to be, anything like a Walmart or Target. That should be blatantly obvious, before walking through their doors. They do not provide shopping carts to keep kids corralled, nor do they provide public restrooms. I appreciate that they don't! If you must shop with several kids, and judge a business by them having public rest rooms, I'd appreciate it if you don't shop here. EVERY time I've shopped here, I get top notch customer service, and ALWAYS find several QUALITY items to purchase. The store is well organized, well stocked, and CLEAN. I'm always greeted at the door, and always asked if I need help. Many times, their help has literally saved my day. Yesterday, I was extremely pressed for time. The super nice sales ladies, managed to quickly find me exactly what I wanted, and I was out the door in less than 15 minutes. Good luck achieving that anywhere other than Nordstroms. Again, if Walmart prices are your main concern, you need to go to Walmart. I shouldn't need to say that, but apparently people don't get it. I've never had a problem returning anything, however, when I have had to, I've done so within a day or two after purchase. read more

i've been shopping at the Walnut Creek store for years. I love it and i find the customer service to be wonderful. While there's quite selection of clothing for the mature & petite woman ( i shop for both my mother and grandmother there), i have also found some lovely tops (lucky brand), dresses (indian cotton $20), and shoes for myself as well. In fact my favorite boots (black, flat heeled, over the knee made by chinese laundry) were purchased in their shoe department. While this store is not outwardly glamorous, and merchandise is often jumbled together, it always comes through for me. Y'all can keep your Ross', Marshall's, and such; i'll shop here... read more

I have not been in McCaulou's for quite a while but have always enjoyed shopping at the Walnut Creek, Concord, and Lafayette store locations. Just a few days before Christmas, my high school-aged daughter and I went shopping for Christmas gifts at the Walnut Creek, Countrywood location. We were able to find everything we wanted and even items for ourselves. Even though there was a line to checkout at the women's clothing department, all the ladies working were in a pleasant mood and were apologetic to the customers in line for the wait. Everyone, including myself that stood in line understood and we all the had the same response of "no problem". I got home and unfortunately found out I had grabbed the wrong size top and needed to exchange it and also return another item. I went back about 15-minutes before the store closed and I was quickly helped and my transaction was taken care of very easily. I have read all the reviews for McCaulou's and I personally have never been treated rudely at any one of the store locations nor David M. Brian located in downtown Broadway Plaza, and I have lived here for 28 years. All the stores are very clean, well run and the stores all clearly have signage at their store register counters about their policies regarding free gift wrap amount minimums, and about their "seasonal" item return policy. Also, if you live in the Bay Area, you are well aware of the 10-cent bag charge. It does not matter if you spend $1 or $100 or more, the charge is known and you have a choice to add a dime or not to your bottom line. If you can afford to live in the Bay Area and spend $100, you can afford a dime in my opinion! Supporting local businesses is important. It would be very sad if all we had to choose from are corporate shopping stores where everyone has seen the same thing and items are not unique. What I find at McCaulou's are unique items that are modern as well as traditional and classic in style. Pricing sometimes maybe a bit higher on certain items but the product quality is so much better than many of the items found at Macy's or even Nordstrom. Thank you McCaulou's for being a local business and for providing such a pleasant shopping experience all these years. I will definitely continue to be a loyal shopper at your different locations. read more
