While walking around the Vineyard Shopping Center in Concord, we came across a nice department store called McCaulou's. It is a really nice department store that sells Men's, Women's, Junior's, and Children's clothing, cosmetics, shoes, toys, books and gifts. They also had a sale going on for clothing. The staff greeted us when we walked in. The inside was one huge space that was decide into different departments. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful displays of stationary and gifts right when we walked into the store. This store reminded of me of a store called Gottschalks department store that used to exist in Fresno California. They closed in the early 2000's. I loved that store and this place brought back many good memories of shopping there. Everything was so orderly and displayed so beautifully. The staff were exceptionally personable and friendly. I loved it here! They had a really nice men's department and shoe department. I didn't have a chance to thoroughly look at the women's section. I'll have to do that, the next time I come. I loved the kitchen items they had on display for entertaining. I ended up finding some really cute kitchen towels with kitty's all over them. I also found a nice baseball style hat with a lovely floral design on it, in the stationary section. They had lots of great gift ideas and unique items. I would definitely come here again in the future. I saw online that they have more locations in the North and East Bay, as well as Stockton. I hope to check out some of the other locations when I'm visiting those cities. read more

How much does a tissue paper cost? Today I took my 83 year old mother out shopping to buy a baby shower stuffed animal. Her total purchase was $31. (2 stuffed animals purchased separately) I also purchased 3 baby books totaling $31. My mother asked for one of the stuffed animals to be wrapped in tissue paper to stay clean, and the woman who assisted her was very friendly and very accommodating to her disabled condition. However, the manager, D.Green, who checked us out at the register was reluctant to give us one more piece of tissue paper for the second stuffed animal when my mother asked for it - because it did not make the $20 minimum purchase gift wrap requirement. My mother did not ask for it to be gift wrapped. She asked for a piece of tissue paper, just so the fuzzy animal stayed clean. When the manager told my mother the purchase did not qualify for a piece of tissue paper, I spoke up and said I just bought $31 of books, does that qualify? She replied, 'no, that's on a different receipt' We left without the piece of tissue paper. I called the Store, and coincidently the Manager is who checked us out. I spoke to her because my mother was very upset and is a local resident. I do not live in the area. The manager stated she was following the policy. McCaulou's on Clayton Road just lost a local customer over a 5 cent piece of tissue paper! As a Manager myself I would never argue with a customer over a piece of tissue paper. The woman who wrapped the first gift was great, the Manager, however, needs customer service training as we were not rude or inconsiderate at any time towards her or any staff members. read more

My hubby introduced me to this store when I moved here from Los Angeles because it's very unique and carries a great deal of the surf brands & clothing style I prefer that cannot be found anywhere in this area. As for products I absolutely love this store and have always found something fun I want for me or a gift for my family. As for the staff, most employees are usually either super helpful and attentive or super odd and just stare at you and follow you around like you're going to shoplift. Ive been working in law enforcement 20 years and prior I was a manager at Nordstrom and worked closely with loss prevention & some of these employees here treat customers as though they are 'on to them' but when in reality the customer is just super turned off by their odd behavior. This is typically a training issue or an overbearing management but can be easily remedied with proper training. If their issue is a high degree of product loss due to shoplifting, the amount of rounders and product overwhelms the floor which inhibits the ability to actually see customers between clothing etc. I recently visited, found and bought some cute pajama bottoms , walked the floor to search for a cute matching tee to compliment the colors in the PJs and a girl in juniors RAN at full speed from men's holding her arms out saying 'here I'll take those' 'I'll put them on the counter', I was literally looking at the sale rack, not at register not ready to check out. I said ' no thanks, I'm trying to match my items with a top', she said 'oh I'll put on counter while you look'. I had to say louder ' no I'm trying to match colors' and she walked away. She should have asked to help or apologized for being pushy. I then decided to just cash out and not buy anything else besides the pjs as I was now turned off. I remembered I needed a game and asked the lady at men's for Uno, she was super sweet and sent me to kids. I went to the kids section to find an Uno game and the area was so packed I could barely squeeze through ( I'm 5'4, 125 lbs) . I find the game I'd been looking for & While I struggled to squeeze through I glance at the register to see about purchasing in this department and I see a girl leaning in the doorway behind counter that leads to what appears a back office. She just started at me like 'I'm watching you'. I have to say I was genuinely offended at her stance & me being law enforcement & working with the public and previous extensive retail experience found this to be an ineffective approach to customer care and service and could cause customers to be stand-offish. I asked if she worked here, she said 'yes' sternly and I asked if I could purchase my item here, she said 'yep'. Zero customer service skills. She should have walked over to greet me and ask if I needed help finding something. I really hope this store works on proper training for their staff, I do customer service training for companies so if necessary I'm happy to help. The current techniques are not up to par besides 3 older women here who are stellar and offer top notch customer service. Only reason for this long review is that this behavior has occurred on multiple shopping experiences in the last several years so I decided to write about it in hopes for some positive change as I absolutely love this store. read more

I have always liked this store and had pretty good service until this week when I needed to return two items. I use a receipt saver called Neat that keeps all of my receipts so I don't have a pile of paper receipts. I can pull the receipt up on my phone. I went in with my sister who has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and is in a wheel chair with oxygen and pretty weak. I took her with me because she likes to get out of the house, not thinking it was going to be the problem it ended up being. I took my items to a women at the shoe department who said she was a manager. I use this Neat system all the time at many, many stores and could not believe problem I had with her. She stated she never saw such a thing before and proceeded to call various people to get "permission" to return the items. The receipt was very clear and had everything needed to verify the sale and it also matched with my credit card. It took at least 15 minutes for her to decided she would give me my refund, while my sister is sitting there not needed to go through this. Had I realized what was going to happen I would have never brought her with me for the return. This woman was rude and clearly not customer service orientated and evidently not tech savvy. She said she was the manager but clearly didn't have a lot of authority or just didn't want to process the refund. This is a nice little store but she really left me with a bad impression. read more

Great to have a local store that Carrie's a nice selection of mens clothes that catch your eye and are good quality. It's my "go to" store.

First off the prices are way too high. And to make it worse they have a even higher price on the tag and draw a red line through it and write a lower price, and the lower price is still too high. This is policy there. The employees are specifically told not to talk to customers, and that means they wont go up to you and ask you if you need any help. This is all thanks to the poor choice of the manager Susan, who clearly has no idea how to run a department store much less manage her employees. read more

Never never shop here unless you don't want customer satisfaction. I bought a pair of shoes that were defective. All I could get was a store credit. This is absolutely crazy. If the shoes are bad you should get your money back. Here they never give money back they re living in the dark ages. Times have changed McCaulou's. I will never ever shop here again. read more

The store is great if you don't want to go to the mall. It's convenient to grab a pair of jeans or a T-shirt. I did some Christmas shopping today, and when I went to have my gifts wrapped, as they advertise in the store, I was met with great reluctance , Since they didn't have the decorative boxes I opted to have this quick wrap. The woman that wrapped my gifts, there were four, I opted to just get boxes for the last two because she made it very apparent she was not appreciating having to wrap these boxes. To the woman that wrapped my gifts, I'm sorry that this made you so miserable you certainly made me aware of how unhappy you were given that I " Took the prize for the most gifts wrapped in a row" as you told me repeatedly , i'm sorry , maybe it's time to take a vacation, or retire. I cannot say if I received good service or bad service because I received NO service at the Concord store on Clayton. I walked in shortly after they opened on this Sunday morning. I did not receive so much as a nod from any of the three clerks that I saw as I shopped for about twenty minutes. Very disappointing as I've enjoyed wonderful service as well as purchases at the Walnut Creek store for several years. This experience today took the sails out of my desire to purchase anything. I tried to email the store directly about this through their website, but their server "rejected" my letter. I recommend an in service for these employees on customer service. read more

The people who work at this location are RUDE! The customer service is terrible. I've experienced several times where nobody is around to help, you ring the bell at the counter nobody comes, find the manager and they make you feel stupid. Today though I had a terrible experience. I thought the store opened at 9. I arrived at 9:57 and one of the girls that works in the teen department was standing in the doorway. She said "we don't open until 10." I said okay. Then an older woman came and locked the door (weird). I stood there until 10:01. Two employees were just standing by the door chatting. At 1003 I left as they were still standing there chatting and still hadn't opened the doors. Shame on you for being so rude. read more

I'm writing to sing the praises of Alice in the Cosmetics Department at the Danville store. I called the Concord store to see if they carry cosmetics, as I had seen an ad for Clinique, offering a gift with purchase (which no other store was offering). The salesperson told me that while Concord doesn't carry cosmetics, I could call the Danville or Lafayette store to order the items and have them sent to Concord. I called Danville and spoke with Alice. She was so helpful! She completely worked with me, giving me suggestions on the line, as I was purchasing items to bring to my in-laws overseas. When she said she would call me back, she did. She even gave me suggestions on the foundation color that would be in the gift! I received the items as promised, and within the time frame she said. Alice was friendly, down-to-earth and very knowledgeable about the line. I have only shopped in McCaulou's once, years ago; because of Alice's stellar customer service, I'll be frequenting McCaulou's much more. I have made a point of telling all my friends in the area that when they're looking for Clinique or Estee Lauder products, to call McCaulou's to order them, instead of having to drive all the way to downtown Walnut Creek to get them at Macy's or Nordstrom. On a side note, McCaulou's in the Countrywood Shopping Center in Walnut Creek will soon have a cosmetics department. Contrary to reviews I have read about the customer service at McCaulou's stores, when I arrived at the Concord store, I wasn't formally greeted, but I was met with smiles all around. I spoke with Susan Dillon, the Store Manager. She was very friendly and helpful as well. One suggestion I would make is that it would be beneficial for McCaulou's associates to actually greet customers. They don't have to get in their face, but a "Good Morning/Good Afternoon!" would definitely raise the bar for a pleasant shopping experience. I can't speak about the clothes, but I will say that they have a nice gift section, with soaps, body creams, candles, lovely serving pieces, and a lot of wine-themed items. Think David M. This is a great place for semi-trendy teenage girl clothes and younger girl clothes down to toddlers/babies. When I was a young girl and saw something in Seventeen magazine, McCalulou's was sure to have it. You can get really good stuff on their sale racks, too. Especially for men and kids. If you are an adult woman, this is not the place to shop unless you want to look like a woman of a certain age, but I have gotten the occasional nice pair of pants or jacket. And they carry all kinds of knick knacks and tchochkes if you need a gift but again, try to wait until stuff gets marked down. read more

Since reading so many negative reviews of the Concord store, I wanted to give some kudos to two employees of that store, Cinda, who works in the womens' section and Diana, the store manager. I was looking for a necklace for a specific outfit and Cinda was my first contact in finding one. She even put the necklace on hold until I could bring in my outfit. When I brought it in, both she and Diana helped me finalize the sale and even made a small adjustment to the chain to get the right length. Both of the ladies went out of their way to help me. I have always been able to find what I was looking for at McCaulou's and love that the store in Countrywood carries Clinique. read more

In trying to return an item I had received as a gift, I was told it couldn't be returned unless the original card was presented, even though the card number was on the sales receipt. All I wanted was for the charge to be charged back to the original card, as shown on the receipt, not cash back. Nope, the original card has to be presented. What if the original buyer was not here in the state? Sure, they would have given me store credit, but I wanted a refund, charged back to the credit card used for the purchase. I don't return many things, but I've never before encountered a store using this idiotic policy. Time for McCaulou's to come into the 21st century. read more

McCullough's isn't excellent store it has things for everybody from children to adults and even have some toys prices are very reasonable and styles are great I would give it a four stars in Clayton and five stars in the one in Lafayette read more

I spent all day (for two days) looking for Tennis shoes for my 9yr old boy and 6 yr old girl... found what I was looking for at Mc Caulou's! I even went to the mall, with no luck. Should have come here first!! Love this store, it has pretty much everything. Even my husband was like " I'd shop here anytime!!" And I'm telling you that says a whole lot. The young woman in men's department yesterday was terrible. She just stared at us while we tried finding sizes. Stared at us while my son waited for a dressing room. Was on floor with backpack and we had to ask to purchase our items. And made no effort when asked if other sizes were available. Unprofessional doesn't begin to describe her.
