For years, I have heard about the popular Mazzetti's Bakery, but never got around to checking them out until recently. In preparation for a birthday party on Saturday, April 8, 2023, I was in the market for a cake. The birthday boy wanted strawberry shortcake. In search of this specific flavour, we narrowed down the list of possible cake shops to two, one of which was Mazzetti's Bakery. Ordering experience: C grade/3 stars. I called the bakery several times to no avail - no answer nor ability to leave a message after the outgoing voicemail (frustrating). Quite a bit later, after looking through their caller IDs of missed calls, they did call me back, though. Birthday boy decided on a Derby Cake - 8 inch round, Black & White (Alternating Chocolate & White layers), Fresh Strawberries & Banana with Red Writing, which I ordered via online on April 4, 2023. Ordering via their website was straightforward and easy. Venue & pick-up experience: B grade/4 stars. I went to Mazzetti's to pick up the cake order shortly after 4 PM on April 8, 2023. Although they do not have a parking lot, I easily found free street parking just a few steps away from the bakery's entrance. Not sure if it was due to Easter weekend or if they are always busy as the line easily grew to a short queue outside their front door. The venue is small, but not tiny. They have glass cases displaying baked goods for sale along two walls and there are a few tables and chairs for patrons who want to sit and enjoy their sweets on site. The place appeared to be clean and tidy. Despite the long line, waiting to be served didn't take very long. I had a lot of questions, inquiring about several items and the team member who assisted me was very friendly and helpful. He gave me a free extra Butter Cookie, but not sure what the $0.55 Surcharge on my receipt was for. Food: A-/5 stars. In addition to the Derby Cake, I purchased some Hot Cross Buns (6 for $11.70), a couple of Chocolate Biscotti ($3 for the two), and some Butter Cookies topped with chocolate sprinkles ($0.50 each). The hot cross buns, according to my husband, were ok, he has had better from elsewhere and the biscotti were pretty standard in taste and texture. The butter cookies were not bad, but the star of all of the items was most definitely the birthday cake....and when I say star, I mean that the cake shined with double thumbs up from the birthday boy and all of our guests. Everyone enjoyed the alternating moist layers of chocolate and white cakes with fresh strawberries, bananas and whipped cream frosting - it was better and much more interesting than the strawberry shortcake that the birthday celebrant initially wanted....and at only $32.95, this was a winner of cakes! I now understand why Mazzetti's is a local favourite and all the rave over their Derby Cakes. We will be back - I think Mazzetti's is our new go-to cake shop! read more

They're generally good, but this is the 2nd time they've messed up a cake I've ordered. Now I'm dealing with a grumpy wife. I ordered a Chinese New Year's derby cake with chocolate inside and asked for only strawberries. Instead, it was vanilla cake with bananas and strawberry. Hopefully one of the kids will finish it. I'm not totally sure how to prevent it, but I guess ask them to double check they pulled the right cake? The chocolate cake is good but we're not a fan of this vanilla. read more

Oh my goodness - not enough great things to say about this bakery! Having an Italian bakery nestled right in the heart of Pacifica makes it that much sweeter! It is so great to have a variety of delicious pastries (cookies, palmiers, cupcakes, donuts) available, and really, all ready to consume! I am especially glad that they make variety packs, so when it is super difficult to just choose one type of cookie, there are already made platters that have all sorts of pastries available so you can try different flavors. It is definitely a crowd pleaser! Oh, AND they have cakes! A word to the wise though - just be sure to check the store hours prior to going. You don't want to make the trek over to Pacifica (if you don't live there), only to find that it is closed. Customer service is top notch, parking is not an issue, and if you want to make a whole experience of it, grab a pastry and walk on down to the beach to catch the sunset. Winning! Their service alone makes me a fan. I ordered a cake online the morning of the event I needed it for and received a voicemail saying they don't do same day pick up and that they can fulfill the other the next day. Well, that wasn't going to work since I needed it the day of so I was worried and my anxiety started rising and I kept thinking, "no, I don't need a cake tomorrow, I needed it today." So, I tried calling and they didn't pick up and decided to swing by. Worse case is I pick up different pastries to fill the amount I paid or I get a refund. Their pastries looked delicious and they have a ton of options available. I didn't get the name of the worker who helped me, but long story short I was able to get a different cake in place of the one I ordered. While it wasn't a derby cake, it still had the same Lunar New Year design and was a black and white cake inside. Service was great and I was helped without any hitch. I've never liked Pumpkin Pie until I had the pumpkin pie at this place. It's fresh, not overly sweet and honestly it tastes good. You made a believer out of me. So much so that this year I bought 5 pies to give away to family and friends to try this local bakery. I've had their other pies, including their pecan which was just okay. In my case, the next morning, while I was driving to the bakery to pick up a preordered 8" Derby Cake $32.95. I had forgotten to include the writing on the cake to say, "Happy Birthday." Oops! But it got sorted out when they called me back. I ordered the mixed layer cake (chocolate/vanilla) and it had just the right amount of frosting and filling of strawberries and bananas. My party all loved the cake. It's moist and not too sweet which was perfect. The 8" was more than enough for our party of 10. There was still half a cake left. At pick up time there was a small line and we had to wait a bit. This was on a Saturday around 10:30am. I have heard of this bakery from friends and colleagues, people who have gotten custom cakes here, but I was not sure where exactly in Pacifica, it was located. I breezed by it on my way to my new job this week at Ocean Shores Elementary school. Visited on Thursday early morning and this bakery lived up to the hype. Friendly service, a plethora of pastries and baked goods which look great and ( based on the chocolate cheesecake muffin and cannoli that I sampled before giving to my kids, taste even better. This local bakery has some of the best tasting cakes and pastry items. On weekends, there's usually a line out the door, so be prepared. They also offer fresh baked focaccia, so delicious. The lines move fast, and they have plenty of goodies to pick from. There's a few tables for dine in, but most customers get it to go. You can't go wrong with fresh baked goods from here. Cake 5/5 = Derby cake has always been a family favorite since my aunt who lives in Pacifica always orders it for her daughters bday every year - never failed. Love the cake! Service 1/5 = I had my sister-in-law pick up the cake for me, first encounter was already off - she said hi and politely asked if the order was ready since she got there at 2:40pm and pick up was 2:30pm. We got 6 items and it was only $11. Their pastry is freshly made with great exterior flavor while soft and fluffy inners. Portion is big and price is good. They also do kids and custom cakes. PlEnty of breakfast and dessert options. The shop is located at the corner of a busy intersection. I ordered a personalized Derby cake to celebrate my 40th birthday after they made a beautiful forest-themed cake for my friend's baby shower. I showed them a Coca Cola themed cake design I found on Pinterest. They took a photo of it, said they couldn't do some stripes I wanted but everything else could be done with an extra charge for the special design and font for a total of $91.70. I was happy to pay for a beautiful cake! When I went to pick up the cake, however, it looked like it was done at the very last minute by someone with no design skills. Maybe a teenager did it. The handwriting was not Coke font, was off-center, and the Coke bottle looks like a blobby baby bottle of some sort? When I asked the manager, he said I didn't pay for special font, I just paid for the red color. When I disagreed and showed him the design we discussed, he said there was no way they would've agreed to do that (even though they did) and offered to give me a discount. There was no accountability or admission of a cake design done badly. I told him I was not ok with their offer but was willing to pick it up the following morning if they would fix it. So they put me in touch with the owner. After speaking to the owner, we went over the issues and he told me what he would suggest to make it more feasible. The 2nd photo is the end product and a gorgeous cake!!! If my design was too challenging, they should've called me as soon as they realized the designer doing it was too unartistic/inexperienced. They also could've called me if they saw any issues with my order. I was shocked they handed me the first cake with the price I paid, and thought it was acceptable for what I paid. How can the first cake possibly be worth $91?? Thank GOD I gave myself an extra day ahead of the party so they were able to fix it in time. I recommend Mazetti's improve their communication skills. If you think a design not worth your time or you don't think you can do the design that the customer pays you for, then don't take their money or call them and tell them. read more

We usually preorder the cake so I can have 1/2 vanilla 1/2 chocolate... but since we did not plan ahead - we picked up a chocolate Derby cake and it is just so good! The cake is moist, not overly sweet, and has generous strawberries and bananas in it. They can customize the cake with your photo but make sure you pre order a day or so in advance. I had someone recommend the derby cake for my son's first birthday. Being unfamiliar with the bakery, I called to ask if there was a way to see if they could do a design I had found online. I don't live super close and doing any longer trips with my 11 month old son is difficult. We were planning to have my dad pick up the cake. I asked if we could have the Amazon ordered toppers shipped to her directly and have them put it on since I wasn't contingent in my ability to decorate it myself. She provided the P.O. Box. We confirmed the other details of the order by email and she sent over an invoice. The cake was perfect! Everyone thought it was super cute and multiple people at the party were delighted that I had ordered a derby cake. My family is from all over the Bay Area and I had no idea the derby cake from Mazzetti's bakery was so well known. I ordered two times the amount of servings we needed for the expected guests. While we did have some left over during the party, all the guests took home the left overs and we had none to take home ourselves. Safe to say, the cake was a hit.
