The good: We absolutely love Mazzetti's. We've ordered cakes from them for many years, and have never been disappointed. The bad (this particular time): we ordered 6 dozen cupcakes and 2 smash cakes for pickup. When we arrived we were told there were only 3 dozen and the two cakes. The person helping quickly showed a receipt - never handed to me EVEN AFTER I ASKED FOR A COPY, and proceeded to read and "verify" on a pink slip that was all I ordered. I panicked and rather than pushing or asking to speak to someone else, I agreed to their suggestion of buying 3 more dozen from the display case. I was disappointed because the missing cupcakes were a "special" order of funfetti - and unfortunately the replacements would be plain vanilla. Luckily , I managed to pull up my credit card charge and was able to compare the pricing, confirming that my order was for 6 dozen. When I presented this to the employee they responded with "yea, I guess we can just give these to you". I didn't have it in me to fight or argue, but they weren't "giving" me anything - I PAID FOR 6 dozen! Later on that evening, I received a phone call from the bakery asking if I was planning to pick up my cupcakes. WHAT?!? I explained the situation to the person on the phone and they told me the cupcakes were "in the back of the fridge" and likely "an honest mistake". I get it, and I would say I was more than understanding - and was even ready to pay for what I thought was my mistake. I wish I had pushed further or asked to speak with someone else, which might have encouraged a more detailed search and me receiving my actual order. The person on the phone was nice and even offered to send communication to get me a "possible compensation" - which I declined. I didn't want compensation, after all I paid for 6 dozen and that's what I left with. I was just super disappointed that it wasn't what I actually ordered and expected. Flavor was there as always, guests liked them. Only thing was the two smash cakes were visibly different, size and decorations - when the only difference should have been the flavor, leading me to believe that one was made to order while the other one wasn't. read more

Omg. Where have you been? I had to look for a Tiramisu cake for my upcoming brother in law's birthday. Plenty of parking outside. The line was out the door but yet we were in and out in no time. We bought a slice of tiramisu (sold by the slice only) Omg. It's one of the best tiramisu I have tasted. But wait they also sell other things. They have Focaccia, taste almost like the one from the North beach neighborhood in San Francisco ( the one known for their Focaccia ) omg. Also, their danishes are huge. Like huge. We love this bakery for one main reason: the derby cake. It's absolutely delicious and a huge hit at every party--we keep coming back for it. That said, the experience with preordering has been frustrating and inconsistent. Out of three times we've preordered, two had major issues: * Once, the toy topper we paid for was missing, and we only found out when we picked up the cake. If someone had told us ahead of time, it would've been disappointing but manageable. Instead, we were left scrambling just hours before a child's birthday party. I ended up driving to almost every Safeway on the Peninsula trying to find a similar toy to replace it--definitely not how you want to spend the day of a celebration. * Another time, we ordered a half-sheet cake and received a quarter-sheet instead. Not sure how that mistake happened, but again, no real explanation or apology was offered, and we were left to just deal with it. Customer service during these situations has felt pretty indifferent--no offer of real reimbursement or even much acknowledgment that something went wrong. I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon for a slice of carrot cake and a coffee. The cake itself was good -- the frosting is sweeter than I'd usually prefer, but the black coffee balanced it out. Growing up in the South Bay, Peters' was our legendary bakery with their Burnt Almond Cake, but as a proud SJ Native I am willing to put Mazzetti's Derby Cake in that pantheon of must-have items while visiting The Bay. The Good: *Excellent customer service *Ridiculously inexpensive @$33 for an 8" round cake, I've seen other bakeries charge nearly double for a good but inferior cake. *In case you haven't figured it out by now, the Derby Cake is the must-have item here. They make chocolate and white (i.e., vanilla) flavor--we favored the chocolate but either would receive no complaints from yours truly. The Meh: *They have a mixed Derby Cake, but it's only available on a pre-order basis. *Parking can be an issue, but there's plenty of 30-minute parking in the area. *Occasionally there's a line, but the ladies get you in and out lickety-split. I remember as a kid back in the 80s, we would stop to grab donuts and other baked goodies as a treat at Mazzetti's Feels like eons ago, but the same long-established practices of friendly customer service and excellent product still continue at this 50yr old bakery. Even back then the donut holes would be warm and fresh, before we went crabbing at the pier. Mazzetti's Bakery has been serving eager guests for over 50 years and their cases hold a large selection of delicious treats. I was there with 2 friends who had never been there, so I had to purchase the Derby Cake parfait cup so they could try this specialty. Unfortunately, it was hard for them to really get the whole experience because it was hard to get some of everything on their forks! Regardless, it was delicious. I also purchased a large cranberry muffin, a small blueberry muffin, and a flaky apricot pastry which I haven't tried yet but look just as delicious as the Derby Cake. Wow where to start?! This has been our go-to bakery when we are outside of Visalia and used to to be our main one when we lived in Daly City. This place is a hidden gem and true to its Italian heritage; truly delicious, truly top notch. We have on occasion driven 200+ miles to pick up a cake because we miss their cakes, we have always loved their Derby Cake, but recently we tried their Tres Leches Cake and it is every bit as decadent and delicious as the Derby. In preparation for a birthday party on Saturday, April 8, 2023, I was in the market for a cake. The birthday boy wanted strawberry shortcake. In search of this specific flavour, we narrowed down the list of possible cake shops to two, one of which was Mazzetti's Bakery. Ordering experience: C grade/3 stars. I called the bakery several times to no avail - no answer nor ability to leave a message after the outgoing voicemail (frustrating). Quite a bit later, after looking through their caller IDs of missed calls, they did call me back, though. Birthday boy decided on a Derby Cake - 8 inch round, Black & White (Alternating Chocolate & White layers), Fresh Strawberries & Banana with Red Writing, which I ordered via online on April 4, 2023. Ordering via their website was straightforward and easy. Venue & pick-up experience: B grade/4 stars. I went to Mazzetti's to pick up the cake order shortly after 4 PM on April 8, 2023. Although they do not have a parking lot, I easily found free street parking just a few steps away from the bakery's entrance. Not sure if it was due to Easter weekend or if they are always busy as the line easily grew to a short queue outside their front door. The venue is small, but not tiny. They have glass cases displaying baked goods for sale along two walls and there are a few tables and chairs for patrons who want to sit and enjoy their sweets on site. The place appeared to be clean and tidy. Despite the long line, waiting to be served didn't take very long. I had a lot of questions, inquiring about several items and the team member who assisted me was very friendly and helpful. He gave me a free extra Butter Cookie, but not sure what the $0.55 Surcharge on my receipt was for. Food: A-/5 stars. In addition to the Derby Cake, I purchased some Hot Cross Buns (6 for $11.70), a couple of Chocolate Biscotti ($3 for the two), and some Butter Cookies topped with chocolate sprinkles ($0.50 each). The hot cross buns, according to my husband, were ok, he has had better from elsewhere and the biscotti were pretty standard in taste and texture. The butter cookies were not bad, but the star of all of the items was most definitely the birthday cake....and when I say star, I mean that the cake shined with double thumbs up from the birthday boy and all of our guests. Everyone enjoyed the alternating moist layers of chocolate and white cakes with fresh strawberries, bananas and whipped cream frosting - it was better and much more interesting than the strawberry shortcake that the birthday celebrant initially wanted....and at only $32.95, this was a winner of cakes! I now understand why Mazzetti's is a local favourite and all the rave over their Derby Cakes. We will be back - I think Mazzetti's is our new go-to cake shop! read more
