I have been using Mayer's over the years for birthday cakes. The cakes have been average for bakery quality but location is convenient for me. For my sons last birthday we ordered a photo cake which I would pick up on the way to the party. When I get there they say the photo printer broke yesterday and they are printing it now it will be 30 minutes. They were not apologetic in any way about it. Since I had some set up for the party I had to leave and send grandma to pick up the cake. We asked for a discount which they flat out said no. Since the top layer with the photo did not have time to set up the cake fell apart trying to cut it. I have tasted better grocery store cakes. Torrance bakery blows this place away. Notice how they don't even try to defend these bad reviews. Very poor customer service. read more

Mayer's Bakery is the only one I patronize and I eat rolls and other pastries for breakfast every day of my long life. I also love their cookies, cupcakes and other amazing items featured daily. They use real butter and every ingretident is fine quality. You will be very impressed with the variety and flavors created from a vast file of recipes. Ask for something you'd like made and order it if it's not available that day. Mayer's constantly adds new items which makes you want to taste a special new treat. I'll never return. This bakery did my small wedding cake 3 years ago. While "customer service" was a bit brisk, I got what I had ordered without incident and the cake was good. Fast forward to May 2009-- I picked up a small carrot cake and was surprised by the stale "cardboard" taste. For the money, I expected to taste real butter, fresh eggs, etc. but it was not rich it was almost sickly sweet, overloaded with gobs of strange frosting-- possibly a clash of stale buttercream and sour cream? (I didn't realize they were "famous" for their carrot cake until I read some of the reviews here but I was less than impressed. I wondered if it was a leftover cake baked a few days prior.) (The obviously days-old cheesecake samples on the counter weren't exactly a selling point) Today I attempted to place what I thought was a simple (but large) order . I was initially ignored by not one but both employees, though I was the only customer in the shop. When one finally decided to look up and address me, her unsmiling, unfriendly attitude was a huge turn off. I asked a question, which required the manager to answer. The manager never appeared but within seconds my inquiry was surprisingly dismissed without offering any options. (I can only assume that a large order is not something the bakery is interested in or capable of fulfilling) The employee couldn't care less, and neither could the "hidden" manager. I walked next door to Pavillions and placed my order. Yes, at 4pm cases were loaded with (unsold) cakes and cookies Yes, Mayer's still had quite a selection so late in the day. It's nothing to look at from the outside but let me tell you, hands down they bake some mean cakes. If you like light fluffy cake that dissolves into nothing in your mouth this is not the place for you. Now If you like cakes that sticks to your ribs come on in. Don't get me wrong, the cakes here are good. However, I had an extremely negative experience with customer service when ordering my wedding cake. Even though I had be gently informed by my venue that most weddings chose Torrance Bakery OVER Mayer's (ahem, hint, hint), I was still super excited to have our cake come from Mayer's because they have yummy flavors AND my parent's wedding cake also came from here in 1977. Unfortunately, that initial excitement was pretty much ruined by terrible customer service. Their lead cake-decorator-lady was down right rude and could care less about positive customer service. When I voiced my unpleasant experience to the manager, pretty much nothing had changed. At the end of the day, Mayer's wouldn't decorate my cake with the ribbon THEY advised me to purchase for my cake decor AND had in THEIR possession weeks in advanced. Had I not followed up before my wedding day with the bakery to make sure everything was set to go, they probably would have delivered our wedding cake with out the agreed upon decor. Thankfully, my florist decorated my cake and all went well. My point here is: cakes are good, but not amazing enough to put up with crappy service. MAYER'S BAKERY, MAYBE NOT... DO NOT GO HERE;PATHETIC CUSTOMER SERVICE... I Highly recommend that you avoid this bakery. Here is why: This am, I picked up my daughters princess "photo"birthday cake for her 3rd Birthday party today. and her name was spelled incorrectly. (Pick-up time was 8am, and our party was at 9am. I arrived there at 815am). The owner did offer to make a new cake for me, but it would not be ready in time for the party. He was unable to come up with any other solution, so with the clock ticking, I suggested that we could write my daughter's name correctly in raised frosting on top of the incorrect spelling in the photo image. The girl at the counter did this for me, and although it covered up the incorrect spelling, it did not look very good, and really did seem to ruin the whole concept of a "photo" image cake . Essentially this $42 cake did not look very good at all. I calmly told the owner that I was not satisfied and felt that he really needed to refund part of my money as this was ultimately not the cake my daughter had picked out. He told me that he would refund "only $6-the cost of the photo image", because in his words "the cake is fine". I told him that was really unacceptable to me and I didn't think it was fair or sensitive to a customer whose order was messed up. He insisted that was all he could do. I tried to provide him with some constructive customer criticism. I explained to him that it wasnt about the money, it was about paying $42 for a cake which was not delivered as promised. Its kind of like ordering a black car, and then when it turns out to be navy, although its functional, its just not what you ordered. He was completely defensive thru-out the whole interaction and was really kind of nasty. I told him that I thought the right thing to do in this situation (in which a DUM mistake like mispelling a name on a birthday cake was made, which is fairly objective which makes me wonder why no one seems to "check their work" anymore...) would be to refund at least 50% of my payment. He accused me of "just trying to get something for free" and said he would give me a $20 store credit. I said thanks, however based on his hostile treatment of me, I already knew I wouldnt be returning to this bakery(turns out this is not the only place around that sells cakes or donuts). I again told him that I thought the appropriate corrective action on his part would be a partial refund. Well, he became more inappropriate and angry and grabbed the cake across the counter and shouted "how bout I give you $100% refund and I keep the cake and you don't get it!" I then grabbed the cake back across the counter and said " you know that is really pathetic. You are really going to now take my 3 year old daughters birthday cake away from her? I don't think thats gonna happen to my daughter today, and you are really sad" and I took the cake and I walked out. Again, its not about the money, its about how you treat your paying customers. I mean Fred, how lame right- my daughter is 3(says so on the cake that was right in front of you)- had you not have been so rude and hostile, you could have had at least another 10 years of birthday cakes purchased by me for her. Oh, and I also have a 5 year old son, and we wont be going back to purchase his future birthday cakes from your bakery either. Oh yeah, ONE MORE THING- I told about 20 parents(from PV) at the party this am about my experience at your bakery this am, and they were more appalled at your behavior and my experience with you then I was. Crazy huh- you could have refunded me just $21 on my cake and apologized for the objective mistake, or you could have offered to remake the cake and drive it to our party yourself and again apologized for the mistake that your bakery made. You so easily could have built a good rapport with me and earned a loyal customer, as I would have truly appreciated a genuine effort to make the situation right. But no, you had to be rude and hostile and it seems like based on the other reviews I am reading here on YELP, it wasn't the first time you acted this way, and I imagine not the last either. DO NOT GET YOUR WEDDING CAKE HERE! I ordered a 3 tier wedding cake for my Bro's wedding, sent then a specific picture of the design I want, they did it completely wrong and so ugly! Also, they said They don't have boxes for wedding cakes, thats fine so I asked the cake base size so I can get my own box when I pick it up, they said it's gonna be on a 12inch base but at the end they put it on a 14 inch base so The box I got was useless. I was so upset and the lady was extremely rude and didn't care that they messed up at all. Not even a sorry! Drove about 10 mins w the cake in the car, drove super slow cuz I didnt want anything to happen w the cake but guess what, the cake COLLAPSED! the sponge cake was crumbly and the buttercream cracked and the cake was destroyed! So I had to go home and make my own buttercream and fixed the cake, took me 2 hours cuz the cake was in a pretty bad shape. their buttercream was extremely sweet too. Not good at all! pricey cake and the quality was bad. almost like nasty cakes they sell at Ralphs. Will never come back here. Extremely disappointed and I don't recommend it to anyone. Always follow your first instinct when purchasing anything! I ordered a cake here purely because of convenience. What a mistake! Do not purchase anything from here! Owners have changed, rent is possibly high and they are now using the cheapest ingredients. Avoid anything with almond flavor! Also their pastries taste as if they were baked in a lab! This is an addendum to my last review, in requesting a partial refund for the beautiful but stale cake I purchased at Mayer's. I asked for a partial credit to be fair - because it did serve the purpose of us singing around a birthday cake - but not as an edible snack. I was told to bring back the cake. But it had been divided up - and I left the uncut portion in the common dining area at work - and figured it was gone. At the end of the day I went out there - and there was the cake, which is highly unusual. Usually food left in the common area is gone in minutes. My husband brought the cake back the following morning, but the owner or manager refused any refund. I think we need a Portofinos or 85C Bakery on the hill. read more

Never again. I used to love coming here, but the quality of Mayer's has gone down the crapper quickly. I bought a birthday cake for my mom's birthday, and the decorations were awful. I spent a lot of money, and guess what they put on it... One orange balloon. That's it. Are you kidding me, Mayer's? Although I was very annoyed, I took it to Albertson's & they fixed it for me free of charge. Of course, I gave them a generous tip ($10). I decided to try Mayer's even after my disappointment. I bought a lemon chiffon cake from Mayer's Bakery this morning to take to a friend's tea party. I asked the girl behind the counter if the cake was made today. She told me yes. $35 for a 7in lemon chiffon cake. OK, I thought to myself "It'd better be good." When we served the cake, it was MOLDY! Gross! You can't see it with the sugar frosting outside. Used to be a good neighborhood bakery. Went back this morning to order 2 breakfast sandwiches. The new breakfast menu had no items without meat. The lady behind the counter said they could leave the meat off. OK, I am paying for something I am not getting but I like to support local businesses. A few moments later, the woman came back and told me they wanted to charge an extra dollar ( $8.99) for the egg & cheese sandwich with no meat. This was once a favorite of mine! Even had my wedding cake from Mayer's Bakery...since then, the owners have changed 3 more times. The latest owner has produced the worst tasting cakes. They taste as if they are 5 days old-even when I am told they were freshly made. I thought it was a fluke the first time-but when the same thing happened a month later-I decided to give up on the place. Not until the next owner comes will I give the place another go around. I have been to Mayer's Bakery many times in the past. But there are new owners. Not only was the kid behind the counter not friendly, the product I bought and served was moldy. I bought napoleons and various pastries for a party of 10. I put the pastries on a pretty serving platter, when one of the guests pulled the bottom wrapping off the Napoleon someone stopped him from putting it in his mouth because they saw mold all along the bottom of the pastry. I was mortified. No one wanted to eat any of the other pastries as they could not get passed the mold on the Napoleon. I called the next day to tell the owner about his moldy Napoleon's he did not dispute it. He said he would credit me for only the Napoleons, I told him that we didn't eat any of them, and he started yelling at me. I still have not seen the credit! You just don't expect to buy pastries with mold, I can't tell you how disgusting it was. I will never ever go back. I had to give it one star as it would not allow to give none. read more

Today I'm talking about their sandwiches. I got a tuna sandwich here for lunch 2 days ago and ate half. The bread is such high quality that this sandwich is still fresh today after spending this time in the fridge. The bead is not soggy. They bake the sandwich bread there, as you would hope. Generous with the sandwich filling. I usually go to Subway literally next door because it's cheaper, I like the jalapeño bread, and I like other vegetables on my sandwich than just tomato and lettuce. But having the second meal off this sandwich, the quality if the ingredients and the generosity of the tuna serving, which is really what I wanted, made it worth it. Plus I'm supporting this small business that I've loved since I was a child for their cakes and cupcakes. Glad we decided to give them a try. read more

I'm giving a 2 star because at one time the sugar cookies were delicious. In fact I became obsessed and would order 1 a day until recently for the past two visits. I specifically asked for the fresh ones from the sweet great worker (works closing). The owner should or manager should not keep old cookies for days. My cookies were so disgusting! Waited around to see who of the three girls that we're doing nothing, were going to help me. Since none asked after 8 or so minutes. I asked can I order. I'm increasingly disappointed with Mayers - have been coming here since I was a child, and I go every weekend now to buy donuts. Over the past year, despite how early I get to Mayers, they don't make enough donuts and sell out of the basics by 7:30am. They told me if I order them the day before, that will ensure that I get the donuts I want. I just called to place my order on Friday, and they said they cannot take an order because everything has been baked for Saturday. Um - I thought you make them fresh? The I explained my frustration to the woman on the phone and she apologized (no solution was offered), so I asked to speak to a manager. She put me on hold, and then came back to tell me that the managers were too busy (at 4:20 on a Friday afternoon - must have been a big run on donuts!) and couldn't talk to me. This is the best traditional bakery in miles. The almond breakfast cake with marzipan and slivered nuts is so amazing, I pack this as a gift for relatives in NY. Also yummy the almond croissant, m & m cookies, chocolate chip cookies, gluten free cookies and donuts are very good too! read more

Looked forward to buying Thanksgiving goodies at this one time favorite of mine. It has changed hands and it is now TERRIBLE. I spent over $30 buying one pumpkin pie, one cherry coffee cake and three dozen chocolate butter cookies. The pie was raw! The crust was not cooked and when sliced stuck to bottom of tin, un cooked. The new spice they are using made it totally inedible. Thank goodness that someone else brought a pie, I saved it to return. That morning, after brewing coffee and getting ready to begin the real job of turkey cooking, I sat down to an undercooked, raw dough in the center cherry coffee cake! Should have warned me about the pie! I set out cookies for desert and coffee for later and the grand kids would not even eat them. They were totally stale. No taste and like rocks and crumbled when broken. I will NEVER go to this bakery again. You should not either. It was not the cost, it was that they are selling substandard products. Hands down, best coffee cake/danish that I've ever had. My in-laws live in the area and I get one every time I visit, and demand they hand deliver one every time they visit. My husband picked up the cake, not cheching it at the time. I received a chocolate cake with pink lettering and yellow, lavender and green flowers! This is not the first time this has happened. Note: This isn't about the products because I didn't have a chance to purchase anything....It's about the lack of customer service. I had a Living Social voucher to use for this establishment. The expiration date was 9/14/2012. I arrived at the bakery at 6:15 am on 9/14/2012 to redeem this voucher only to be told by Fred that since the expiration date is 9/14, the last day to use the voucher was 9/13!! I have never heard of such a thing! The voucher does not say "Use BEFORE 9/14", it says "expires ON 9/14". Fred was not helpful at all, he told me the voucher was expired and walked away, so even if I wanted to buy something, he wasn't going to give me a chance. I was appalled at the customer service. The best thing about this experience is that I didn't see anything that appealing in the case anyway!! I guess I'll just stick with King's Hawaiian and Porto's. read more

Mayer's Bakery was always our family's go to bakery when I was growing up. I have since moved out of the area and have not been back to Mayer's in a long time. Recently however my husband threw me a milestone birthday party and wanted to give decorated cookies as favors. The bakery he was getting my cake from said they could not make the cookies on such short notice. He called Mayer's to see if they could do it and they came to the rescue. The cookies were absolutely beautiful and delicious too!!!! Everyone raved about them. I am very grateful to Mayer's that they were so accomodating to my husband and produced such great results. I have to order lunches for our meetings at work...today I tried Mayer's. I ordered several different salads. All looked very fresh and one of my directors commented that the Time Square was a great salad with a spicy turkey. I also ordered 1 apricot whole coffee cake and 1 apple. I had a wedding last week and selected Mayer's Bakery out of the four Bakery's I had to choose from. The cake was delicious, however I did not get what I ordered and paid extra$$ for. After returning from our Honeymoon, my husband wanted to take a bite out of the top layer of our cake specially made to his likings. Unfortunately, it was not what we had ordered. I called Mayer's and spoke with a gentlemen who claims to be the manager and informed him what had happened. Before I could finish, he placed me on hold twice for a total of 20 minutes. When he returned, he did not APOLOGIZE, he claimed the baker informed him that he made the cake I ordered when I informed him that I was looking at the cake as I was talking to him. He was very short and not concerned at all about my complaint and advised me to bring a piece of the cake in so he could look at it (which is far from where I live). When I asked will I get a refund or get the top layer re made (which would have been great!) He informed me it was ONLY $10 extra and he would not make another top layer cake. I CAN EAT GOOD CAKE ANYWHERE, HOWEVER THIS WAS MY WEDDING DAY AND THIS IS THE KIND OF TREATMENT I GET. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE..... I SHOULD HAVE WENT WITH TORRANCE BAKERY WHO WOULD HAVE APPRECIATED ME AS A CUSTOMER. read more
