Just went in to pick-up the cinnamon roll and pecan roll advertised on the website as being "only available on Saturday." Not this Saturday - no pecan roll. So, I got a cinnamon roll and pecan bar. Like the donuts, they are very dry. I keep trying hoping that they bring the pastries up to their burger bun quality. The pastries are really 2 stars while the hamburger buns are 5 stars. I do hesitate to give this place four full stars, however, they're worth more than three and better than most of their competition, too; let's call it an uneven 3.9. I have vague memories of Mayer's Bakery as a child; vague, fond memories. However, I don't really remember the baked goods; I think I was mostly enamored with the way the inside looked. Today I finally went back to try some baked goods as I am still on a quest to find a suitable bakery to bake me a bridal shower cake for a bridal shower I am sort of helping to throw; I'm in charge of the cake, in case that wasn't blatantly evident. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I did find out while I was paying for my breakfast that they have a $5 minimum for credit or debit; she said otherwise you'd have to pay a dollar. If that was really the case, in some situations, I wouldn't mind paying that rather than having to buy more baked goods. As it was though, I was planning on getting cupcakes to continue my taste tests, so it was no big deal for me this time. I got an almond scone and a small coffee for breakfast and one white cupcake with chocolate frosting and a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting for later. I really enjoyed my scone, although i did find it a little dry, possibly even for a scone, around the edges, but still tasty. Some bites were more tender and had more wonderful butter flavor than others, and some bites seemed more almond-y than others, although over all, it was a good scone. I would get one again. It also had slivered almonds running all throughout it. The coffee verged on gross though. With such fine baked goods around and after including "coffee shop" in their name, I would think they would pride themselves on better quality coffee. Anyway, I wasn't really there for the coffee though. It'll do if it's early and you're in desperate need of coffee. I told them person who rang me up that I wanted to talk to someone about a price quote for a cake; she immediately referred me to another person, who was happy to help. After we discussed what kind of cake I was looking for (red velvet), I asked if there was any way to get a sample. Her response, "Do you want one right now? Do you want it with cream cheese frosting?" And off she went to get me a sample. I was *very* impressed with and excited by this. I asked for samples at Torrance Bakery and Polly Ann and neither were accommodating in that way. She apparently cut out a round of cake, split into top and bottom layers and frosted the middle, so I could taste that as well. Thank you, Mayer's! :) Both my fellow taster were impressed with the darker red and more natural color of the cake. We bit in. First reaction - wow, what great cream cheese flavor! Then, ugh, Criscocream! Sadly, I do think they used Crisco, or something similar, instead of butter in their cream cheese frosting. Not tasty. I took one bite and didn't really care to take another, although I did. I couldn't really taste the cake as well, but it seemed decent, not a stand out, but definitely acceptable. It was moist as well. I was so sad. So we were a little more reluctant to try the cupcakes, but try we did. I liked how they used white cake instead of yellow. Upon biting into the white cupcake, Mayer's had almost fully redeemed themselves. No trace of Crisco or artificial anything in the cake mostly moist, tasty cake and the frosting was thick, delicious, and rich. An excellent interpretation of a classic. Just what you'd want if what you were craving was an old classic. Same goes for the chocolate cupcake. I think I even enjoyed their chocolate cake more than the white; although I am a chocolate lover. Both of those cupcakes were better than Torrance Bakery's and Polly Ann's. Much better, surprisingly. I thought most commercial bakeries would be the same. Overall, will definitely be back, but no more cream cheese frosting. The cakes on display were impressive, as well. read more

My first visit to this bakery last year was wonderful. I really enjoyed the almond croissants. My past 2 visits, they have sold stale and hard almond croissants. If I lived closer, I would come and ask for a refund. It is unacceptable to charge $4 for stale, hard as a rock croissants. I'm sure their baked goods are delicious, but I think it is shady to serve old baked goods and charge customers an exorbitant price for them. Shame on you Mayer Bakery!!! read more

I'd seen the reviews for this place being really polarizing, so I had a bit of initial hesitation in coming here - but I'm glad I did! As a disclaimer, I had breakfast here, but I know many of the reviews are for baked goods pick-up. The place is nestled in the corner next to the Pavilions supermarket, so it's easy to overlook. Inside, the bakery floor is clean and there plenty of tables. Music was playing but nothing too loud. I was greeted by a kindly lady named Gisel, who noted my indecision and heartily recommended the breakfast sandwiches on their menu. Their menu also had salads, panini and soups. On the shelves and displays in the back there were the standard baked goods and doughnuts. I ordered the #3 (two eggs, cheese, bacon) by recommendation which came with a free coffee, and ordered one glazed cake doughnut. The sandwich came on a buttery croissant, with the eggs halfway to runny and the bacon crispy. The sandwich was sizable and satisfying. The cake doughnut was well balanced and sweet, but not cloyingly so. The coffee was, well, good for eating doughnuts with, which is all I was expecting from a bakery coffee. Apparently the place had changed ownership... about 11 years ago. Setting as this place has apparently been here for over 40 years perhaps there's an "old crowd" that's bitter and resistant to change. But as breakfast at bakeries go, I enjoyed the food and service here and would definitely come back the next time in the area. Give it a try! read more

I unfortunately had a bad experience earlier today. I was in a bit of a rush so I called beforehand at 1:35 pm to make sure breakfast burritos were still available and the man on the phone said they were, so I told him I'd be over shortly. When I arrived, I ordered two breakfast burritos and the woman behind the counter tells me they can't make any sandwiches or burritos because the kitchen closes at 2pm. I literally showed her my phone that said 1:46pm and she tells me again the kitchen closes at 2. Confused, I told her I had literally just called to make sure I could order the burritos. She seemed like she was debating whether or not to ask the kitchen to make the burritos, I'm assuming they started closing and cleaning the kitchen early. And I get it, I've worked in food service before. But such a bummer as a customer to be treated that way. So if you're looking for burritos, idk Chipotle is across the way? read more

I have not been here in ages and I came in the other day since I was waiting for something at the pharmacy nearby. They have a huge selection of various baked goods from cookies, cakes, muffins, donuts, etc. The selection was almost too big for me haha. Everything looked fresh and appealing and the girl behind the counter was very patient with me since it took me a bit to figure out what I wanted. I decided to come try this place because subway had a long line for lunch and I was pressed for time. The place is just like a bakery offering all sorts of goodies. They all looked delicious. I opt for their lunch panini special and it came with a free drink! For $5 dollars you get a sandwich and a drink. I got the BBQ steak and it wasn't bad at all. Wow. Very expensive. Not worth what you get. I asked for a vegetarian burrito, and it cost $2 to substitute the meat for avocado. So that's right, not only were they not putting meat on it , they charged me an extra $2 for 2 slices of avocado making it over $8 for a breakfast burrito. For these prices, I expect great service and organic ingredients. Baked goods are diner level quality, not patisserie level, yet they want to charge for it. People seem tocome here bc there doesn't seem to be any other option in the area. read more

I have been a customer for over 20 years. This business has had several owners. Recently, I have been disappointed with my purchases. The brownies were dry and stale on two occasions. The custard donut had a funky taste from sitting on the shelf too long so I threw it out. The raspberry jelly donut was fresh and tasty, so I have a 25% success rate with my recent purchases. I have given feedback to the counter personnel about the stale pastries, and they smile and nod. It does not seem as if anything is going to change. I do not recommend this business, unless you were requesting a custom order baked especially for the occasion. If you are just walking in off the street to buy what is on the shelf, you are likely to get baked good that are past their prime. read more

The baked goods are decent. Nothing to write about. All I can say is better than the grocery store. The service, now that's unforgetable. I've had consistently bad service every time I go there. The server girls are the rudest service people I've ever come across. I've gone on different days to see if maybe I just got somebody on a bad day, but nope. They are ALL rude. I've always come out of there with a bad taste in my mouth not due to the cookies or cakes but the horrible service. After 3 years, I've had it. I'll drive the half hour down the hill to King's Hawaiian to get good cakes and good service. It's got good point for being close to my house but nothing else. read more

I lived in Santa Monica before I moved here in 2003. My favorite bakery is Sweet Lady Janes, however I must admit Mayer's Bakery in RHE is as Pabilo says - "Heavenly Flavors". We purchased all our birthday cakes from Mayer's and this year our mother's 80th Year Celebration cake with her picture on it. OMG that cake was indeed heavenly. You have to get the pastries early for the best selection. I've cut back on my sweets, however I still indulge in their dark chocolate covered gram cracker. It is truly a community bakery, a great place to sit and chat with friends inside or outside and I have watched the students come and go. I have been using Mayer's over the years for birthday cakes. The cakes have been average for bakery quality but location is convenient for me. For my sons last birthday we ordered a photo cake which I would pick up on the way to the party. When I get there they say the photo printer broke yesterday and they are printing it now it will be 30 minutes. They were not apologetic in any way about it. Since I had some set up for the party I had to leave and send grandma to pick up the cake. We asked for a discount which they flat out said no. Since the top layer with the photo did not have time to set up the cake fell apart trying to cut it. I have tasted better grocery store cakes. Torrance bakery blows this place away. Notice how they don't even try to defend these bad reviews. Very poor customer service. read more

Mayer's Bakery is the only one I patronize and I eat rolls and other pastries for breakfast every day of my long life. I also love their cookies, cupcakes and other amazing items featured daily. They use real butter and every ingretident is fine quality. You will be very impressed with the variety and flavors created from a vast file of recipes. Ask for something you'd like made and order it if it's not available that day. Mayer's constantly adds new items which makes you want to taste a special new treat.
