Looks like Hakkaku Ramen died and has now been replaced by this Cantonese rice roll shop. Parking is available on Hastings, as well as behind the building. The place seems to be run by just 1 person. Very friendly and chatty. I overheard her say she is from the Guangzhou area. The food is basically HK breakfast type. Congee and rice rolls are their specialty, though they also have other items such as dumblings and rice dishes. Food is solid here, and the portion size is very decent. I thought I was going to leave hungry, but I was pleasantly surprised. The owner mentioned that her congees tend to be more "bland" (compared to Western preferences), but I found the saltiness to be just right. Honestly, most other places are too heavy on the flavourings. Special mention. I'll be back to try more items. Recommended.

Ordered their chicken and beef roll. Tbh the chicken and beef were very fatty. The chicken was mostly skin, and the beef was so fatty. I wish it was leaner. I ended up not eating the meat. The rice roll was incredible though. Big portion and the soy sauce is also amazing There's a 25 cent extra if you pay with card and spend below $25.

This place specializes in rice rolls and congee, with some fried rice dishes. It was not that busy when I was there on Saturday late morning. Still in time for their breakfast combo. Daily from 9 am to 1130 am, you can get a congee and rice roll for $15.95. Pretty good deal. Unfortunately the food is not that great. I had the 3 kinds of meat rice roll with the Lai Wan style congee. The congee was decent. Smooth and soft texture. The flavor was subtle. Add soy sauce if you like it saltier. The rice roll was not very thin and soft. The sauce given was not even to flavor the entire dish. The meat was quite sparse. What you see in pic is all the meat. None were inside the rolls. I guess if you are living in this area and really want rice rolls and congee without going far, this is the place. I doubt I will be back. I rather drive into Richmond for the rice rolls as it is really not very good here. Even the rice rolls at dim sum places are much better. Street parking is available outside.

This is a women owned restaurant located in Burnaby Heights area. I have been wanting to try this place out since I love eating congee. We ordered two breakfast combos and Chinese donut. For the breakfast combo, you can pick a congee and a rice roll dish for around $15 ish. I think it a good deal. The congee base is fluffy and I love they have the option of the rice roll with fish siu mai. Fish siu mai is my childhood favourite. I always get a skewer of fish siu mai whenever we visit my grandma back then. I see quite a few people ordering beef noodle stir fry from breakfast maybe we will try that next time

Stopped by for a late lunch and was glad with our choices. They have a breakfast combo of congee and a rice roll for 15.95, however it's only 9-11:30am. Inside they have a decent amount of tables for mainly groups of 2 or 4. We were seated right away. They have menus that you use a whiteboard marker to indicate what you'd like to order. Also, they do have a special menu posted on the wall! I didn't see it until after we ordered, so we'll have to remember to have a look next time. Sliced beef congee- good portion and liked they had thin pieces of ginger in it. It would have been nice to have some more green onion though. The congee isn't super salty, so I liked we could customize it with soy sauce, white pepper, etc. It also would have been nice to have a bit more slices of beef, otherwise it was really tender. Three kinds of meat rice roll- this came with large chunks of meat. It would have been better if it was spread out more into the rice roll, since not every bite would have meat. But the chicken with this one was super tender. Also liked that we get to pour the sauce on to control the amount! Chinese donut- hot and fresh. It was perfect to go with the congee. Although a bit oily, it's kind of expected. HK style milk tea & coffee- we got this cold and it was a good size. It was too sweet for me. But the taste of the tea and coffee was really good. Overall, this was a comforting meal. Service was quick and friendly. For two of us, it was around $30. So it isn't super cheap, but we left happy with our meal. I'd come back. Hoping to get that morning special!

We came on a Sunday and the place was pretty empty when we got there. We ordered the congee with pork, the rice rolls with egg and pork, rice rolls wrapped around fried dough and laiwan style congee. The food came out really fast. The rice rolls with fried dough was crispy and the rice roll was really thin. They do a different style for rice rolls here compared to the ones they serve at dimsum. These weren't smooth enough for me. The rice rolls with egg and pork didn't have enough pork. The congee on the other hand was not bad. You could tell it had been cooked for a long time and there's not much MSG inside. The laiwan style congee didn't have enough toppings in it and was missing the classic peanuts on top. Beef offal rice roll - the portion was really small for what you get. I wouldn't recommend it. The beef offal had a lot of flavour but after one piece it was too heavy for me. Overall I won't be coming back to this place for food. It's a nice addition to the neighborhood but I can find better elsewhere.

It seems like restaurants specializing in Chinese rice rolls are gradually popping up more and more these days. Most of them seem to be in Richmond; when we heard of May Rice Roll & Congee in North Burnaby, we had to go check them out! Shrimp and Scallop Rice Roll Doughnut Stick Rice Roll Sliced Fish Congee Sliced Fish & Beef Congee Chinese Doughnut The rice rolls here were not as smooth, slippery and thin as other rice rolls we've had. These weren't bad though. They're a pretty good option for anyone who lives in Burnaby and doesn't want to drive all the way to Richmond. Chinese Doughnut and Congee were both very nicely done. It's a solid place to go to for these Chinese comfort foods. Service: Good Parking: Free parking on the street Location: 4530 Hastings St., Burnaby

New HK style rice roll and congee makes its way into the Burnaby Heights neighborhood - First off , I think there morning combo of a bowl of congee + Rice roll before 1130 AM is a pretty good deal - Service wise - everyone seemed nice - however they also seemed clueless - they reuse menus and just white out over the previous users order - and if they miss something or did a poor job with the white out , well that's when problems start. Anyways they had to double check our order because there was too many scribbles from the last person - which confused them - even though we circled the ones we ordered - There is also items they make that did not even make it on the menu , like the radish cakes - missing it on the menu is one thing , but like not knowing you have it , not knowing the price is kind of annoying? Especially when you have a giant picture in your window of having it... so I think you should know your menu? Congee wise - I wouldn't complain, I thought my Century egg and pork one was pretty good , not too watery and not too chunky - though I feel like they should cut up the meat better as pieces were kind of large , so they didn't last the entire bowl. Rice roll wise - I'm not a huge fan of rice rolls in all honesty , however, I still eat them - and still have a basic expectation of them. I found the rice roll itself pretty dry - kind of too thick - also I feel like this place is EXTREMELY lazy - none of the fillings were inside the rolls - everything was just randomly placed on top - so the fillings became toppings , and the toppings was not enough for the amount of rice roll - The "toppings" also lacked flavor - if you are not going to put it into the roll , at least make the toppings tasty and stand out - but nope - they all looked different but unfortunately tasted basically the same - https://www.instagram.com/vanleo.eatsfood1015/ Two stars - for congee - but I should leave a 1 - but they are new - and hopefully they get it together - I might come back for a bowl of congee to take out -

North Burnaby finally has a congee and rice roll option. I made the trip out to Burnaby to see a friend and ordered their congee and rice roll combo ($15.95). I ordered the preserved egg and pork congee with a donut stick rice roll. The congee was smooth and not too watery. There was a decent amount of egg and pork. The Chinese donut was crispy and airy. The rice roll could be a bit thicker around the donut, but it was still very tasty. Service was fast. Credit card payment accepted which is always a plus. Ambiance is more of a hole in the wall. It is not a fancy place. There is free street parking in the area. Overall, this is a good Chinese breakfast or lunch option in the area. They also offer rice and dim sum options if you are not craving congee.

3.7/5 not quite there yet for a 4. The food was ready quick and was made fresh. Texture of one of our dishes was over cooked and mushy. But the second one was done beautifully, it was solid and had a perfect chew. Only wish there was more toppings as you can see. We didn't get much shrimp or scallop. Service was good, food came out quick and our hot tea was constantly topped off. It's a nice chill ambiance for those looking to go out for some comfy eats.

May's rice roll and congee chinese restaurant on Hastings street, Burnaby used to be a ramen shop but has quickly switched over to Hong Kong home style Chinese cuisine. I wanted to come here for the rice rolls because I love cheung fun (steamed rice rolls) such a classic drizzled with some soy sauce. It's cute how they put soy sauce in the teapot (just don't pour that into your tea) I like how you can control the amount of soy sauce and it's actually an easy way to pour rather than it being put into a dish saucer or already with the rolls. You can choose many meat protein for the rice rolls I decided on beef and chicken. The meat were nice and tender. We also got a rice roll hot pot with beef brisket. That is my favourite dish. I love the sauce in the pot that's the marinade for the beef brisket and soaked with the rice rolls. Then we tried their congee. Just the simple and classic slice pork with century egg congee. It definitely needed a bit more seasoning, so I added more salt. I thought it was quite watery and very home made style.

It's nice to have a rice roll and congee restaurant in the Heights neighbourhood. Their menu is simple with a selection of rice rolls, congee, and appetizers. I tried their shrimp rice roll which had whole pieces of shrimp. Enjoyed the texture of the rice roll and it had good flavour. Also ordered the fish congee with century egg and it satisfied the craving. Added some spring rolls which weren't the best so will not order again. Will come back when I have another craving for rice rolls + congee.

Tasty Chinese (mostly Sichuan style) restaurant at the NW corner of Lougheed and Willingdon…read more Parking here is available but pretty horrendous outside of business hours. There are maybe 15 spots total for 4 separate food establishments. In addition, there are no free spots in the vicinity at all. For this reason, I have tried and failed to eat at this place for several years. Finally had a chance to try during lunchtime. The best option is probably to get here by transit. The place is decently sized. Staff are friendly. Can watch them crank away at the dumpling factory. Bit of entertainment when waiting for their food. The lunch special here is great value. Comes with soup too. The sichuan marbled pork & cabbage hit the spot. That tastyy Sichuan chili pepper taste. Beautiful. There is also an option for the thick (blade) noodles with no extra charge, which is a nice perk. The quantity was huge. I left stuffed and happy. I also looked at the neighbouring tables, and their non lunch items were also huge. Special mention. Definitely trying more of their food in their future. Just be mindful of their parking situation.

Finally got a chance to try this place after a few decades. Still remember when it was Dragon Inn…read more The place was packed late at night, which is always a good sign. Parking is available but limited in the lot in front. Better to look along Kingsway, or in the side streets behind the restaurant. I found it hilarious that the lot specifically prohibits parking for Tina Cake next door. Guess that must've been a problem over the years. The inside is plain and quite dated (old school). Looks like something out of the 1980s. Awesome. Staff are friendly and helpful. No complaints. Everything hit the spot in terms of authentic Cantonese. I had the stir fried beef with black pepper sauce, Hainan style chicken, and sweet and sour pork. Everything tasted great. Portion sizes are decent, and prices are quite reasonable. As the dishes are shared, it is best to come in groups (at least 3-4) so more dishes can be ordered. Looks like I've found my go-to for late night Cantonese food. Recommended.

This place has been decent in the past and consistently put out large portions of food at reasonable prices. I don't believe anything is outstanding, but always an overall enjoyable meal. Service is relatively friendly too. On a recent night, the most memorable dish had to be the Bean Sprouts w/ Salted Fish, which was full of umami and went well with a bowl of white rice. The Steamed Oysters w/ Garlic Sauce, Beef Chow Fun, and Seafood Chow Mein were all solid. However, the Dry Scallop Fish Maw Soup was bland, and the Goose Casserole w/ Taro was a major disappointment. Reminder to self, I originally wanted to order Tofu Skin in Dry Scallop Sauce, but was convinced otherwise. The recommended dish had snow pea leaves that were a bit tough, though the supreme broth and tofu skin that came with it were yummy. Next time, I want to try my initial selection. Also, don't forget that cheap late night eats is something I should come back for.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm.
