We came here for an anniversary dinner and were underwhelmed. I had the iceberg wedge, which was good, nice crispy lettuce and tasty dressing. For my main course I had salmon, that's where it got strange. What a sorry puny scrap of fish they served. It looked like the tail end of the filet that they cut off to discard then served by mistake. Three tiny bites and it was gone. Tasted good, what there was of it. It was served with pasta so I didn't go away hungry, just disappointed. My husband liked his prime rib, and I have to admit there was plenty of it. He ordered a side of sauteed spinach and couldn't eat it because it was drowning in oil. Dessert was good, but on balance I would not go back. read more

For a Max's I was disappointed. The upper seating area shakes as people walk by due to poor construction. A party was going on in the Hall of Fame, and all we could hear was the BOOM of base. It was also a bit shocking to hear a manager cursing at the kitchen which is open out to the floor of the restaurant. read more

Had dinner this past Sat with a friend. Mediocre service from a most apologetic server who claimed her section was seated all at once. Place mat was sticky, quickly replaced by buser. Always wondered how sanitary those things are. Plus plastic placemats are just tacky at a restaurant of this supposed caliber. We shared the crab cake which was excellent. Presentation could use work, looked as though it was just thrown on the plate. I had cod, fish was cooked to perfection, beets were tasty but the parsnip slices were 2+ inches in diameter. At this width they are generally tough and woody, no exception here. At that size I don't use them in soup without removing the woody center. Kale was meh. My friends pork chop was over cooked and shreddy. According to the server pork chops are always cooked well done unless specified. Hmm. Dessert was pumpkin tiramisu and decaf, both great. Overall a disappointment for a Max establishment. read more

Excellent and quick service. Very good steak French onion soup left a little to be desired which is the reason for a 4 star rating

Always hear great things about this place from everyone at my job, even the owner loves it. Decided to try it for lunch the other day and I must say my husband and I were very glad we did. Great food, unique, well crafted drinks, nice atmosphere, sat outside and enjoyed the fall day. Had garlic bread with Gorgonzola Fondue to start and the vegetable Panini for myself and Big Pig Burger for him. Everything was great! read more

The last time I dined at Max's was three years ago. The reason that I hadn't been back was because the service was slow with no attention to detail. The food was excellent, but the process was painful to sit through. I dined there again last night with high hopes that there had been some improvements. Unfortunately, the service was not good, my filet was undercooked and came with the bernaise sauce even though I asked for it on the side. I sent it back only to have it return to me cooked right but with additional sauce on it. My husband had already finished his "just okay" chicken when I finally got my dish back. Unless there is an overhaul with their service, I will likely not return. read more

My wife and I stopped into Maxes Tavern over the weekend. The food was ok but wow we were shocked when we got the bill. My Sam Adams beers were $10 EACH after a modest tip. My wife's Martinis were $15 EACH after a modest tip for an absolute tiny pour. The food was priced the same way. I don't pay prices like that in Tokyo or London....two of the most expensive cities in the world!!!!! read more

On a recent Saturday night we went to celebrate Mom's 80th birthday. It's very dark and noisy. The server was very nice and the bottles of wine on sale. For the most part the food was good. Two of us had the scallops and we both thought the salad in the middle of the plate was a strange accompaniment. It's just terrible. Avoid at all costs. I wouldn't go there again to celebrate anything. Way too noisy. read more

My office comes to Max's Tavern almost every Friday. The food is great. The service is excellent: We always ask for our waiter, Mark L. and he is the best! He is friendly, attentive and he knows everything we are going to order by heart. I highly recommend Max's and highly suggest you ask for Mark's section! read more

We stopped by tonight w our family (including 3 kids) and were amazed by the food and service. Everything was spot on! My burger was incredibly juicy. My husband had the pulled pork sliders which he devoured. Kids meals were done on plate that was sectioned off - meal/ fruit/ salad/ broccoli. Will definitely come back! read more

Overall I am a fan of the Max restaurant chain - I've frequented them all at some point in time. Given the Max name, it should be no surprise that this may be one of the priciest "tavern" menus you'll see. The food has been good each time - but not great, and for the price point I probably won't be a frequent visitor. The last visit I ordered the special - Filet Oscar. My fault for not asking the price (was surprised to see a $42 charge, higher than anything else on the printed menu), The filet steak was large, and slightly over-cooked - I am always torn between medium and medium-rare, I was assured they "undercook" so ordered the medium and it was definitely edging to medium-well. The "oscar" came with a crabcake and bernaise sauce....the crabcake itself tasted amazing, but was about the size of two quarters stacked together. Crab "coin" would be a more appropriate term, there wasn't more than 2 mouthfuls there. The service is so-so - it appears in some cases they like to hire for looks vs. skill - very pretty people that don't necessarily connect with their guests. Overall - if someone else is paying, I wouldn't say no. On my dime, I think the for the money spent I'd go elsewhere. The food is tasty, but just doesn't connect for price vs. value/experience for me. read more

Food was okay, but certainly nothing outstanding except the roast beef sandwich, which was superb. Service should have been better. Not sure if much better in Springfield. Good for business lunch. read more

The place was great! Service was excellent and we enjoyed everything we ordered. One had scallops and raved about the dish. Another had the strip steak. The garlic bread appetizer was also a big hit. We also had dessert. Flourless chocolate cake was very good as were the mini cider donuts. would eat at Max's again if ever in the Springfield area. read more

I know a lot of the above most likely got burgers, so I will not bother to review crappy burgers anyway. I don't eat burgers. All chicken entrees I've had and appetizers were gosh darn good. My favorite, for lunch, would have to be the grilled chicken salad. One of the best I had. Yes, there is a long wait, but if you're going to eat out anywhere in Springfield on a Friday, or Saturday night, it's to be expected. Wait a half hour at Max's, wait a half hour at Uno's. Makes no difference. Learn like we have, make calls ahead of time, or reservations. Great place, great service, great food. read more

The restaurant was very nice looking, but that's about it. The food was not worth the money we paid. I expect more from a fine dinning restaurant. Service was ok. read more

Went recently for a business lunch with a group of six. It is always our "go to" place for important business lunches. The menu is amazing and the specials are more and more tempting each time. Portions are always very generous and the service never disappoints. You have to try the tuna tacos for an app and their Cobb salad is hands-down the best (ask for it in a bowl as opposed to a platter). Have been for dinner only couple of times and it was very busy but good. Steak is a must but be careful with au poivre. My order was way over coated with pepper and just as salty. I am holding back from giving five stars only because the drinks are very pricey and occasionally the service can be slower than should be. read more

Went there last week on business. It wasn't that busy for a Friday night. Our waitress did not have any opinion about the food. She stated she was fairly new. She disappeared for quite some time. The food preparation was really slow. Had to ask for bread forks water etc. The food was good when it finally arrived. Dinner took almost 2 hours. My time is too valuable. Not a fan. I have been to other Max restaurants and was always pleased. Just not with this one. read more

Have eaten here twice recently. Haven't been lucky enough to get a reservation in the main dining room so opted for the bar area instead. Same menu, different atmosphere. Can get a little loud on a busy night. Food is excellent. Salads are fresh and delicious. I had the salmon a la plancha and my daughter had the seafood risotto..both yummy. Service has always been excellent. On a busy Saturday night our waiter was very attentive and always checking on us to see if we needed anything. Great place for a great meal! read more

Good food nothing spectacular but in a town like Springfield you cant find anything better.

We ate at the bar because there was a 40 minute wait for a table. The service was great and our bartender makes a mean mojito. The meal was delicious as usual. We had the braised rabbit and calamari for appetizers, hubby had steak and I had blackened mahi mahi for our entrées. Everything was prepared perfectly. Max's continues to be a favorite. read more

Ordered Prime Rib and a loaded baked potato. Potato was burnt and the meat was cold. Sent it back. The meat was well done(no longer medium) and the Potato was cold. The dust was thick along the wall of the booths -disgusting The only positive was the we had a delightful server. read more

The max empire is in decline. Max's Tavern menu hasn't changed, except to get much smaller, since the day the restaurant opened. The food, at best, is acceptable, and not all the time. Martinis became smaller last summer as well as the "jumbo shrimp". The greater Springfield area is a culinary wasteland and this restaurant is a fine example. read more

Had some very good meals here! If you're looking for a nice place to get some food, I'd definitely give this place a shot. Had a few meals here, I think only one of them wasn't great, but every place should be allowed a second chance! read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in for a few drinks and were not disappointed. The bar staff was friendly but not overly talkative, and whipped up a very professionally done pumpkin martini for me and a Tom Collins for him. I would go again, if I had the money! Drinks were pretty pricey. read more

Updating to five stars for the happy hour service. The food is delicious and they don't skimp even though it is heavily discounted. Presentation is still great and the bar is actually a nice spot to sit. read more

Went to Max's last night with some colleagues for apps and drinks. Sliders, tuna tacos, and oysters were incredible, as was our server Maureen. My only issue was with the bar, specifically the bar manager. 1st Disaronno on the rocks was great. As anyone who enjoys Disaronno knows, its a very distinct flavor. That's why, when my 2nd one tasted like lighter fluid, I sent it back and specified that I knew it wasn't Disaronno. Bar manager smelled it, dumped it, and I watched her refill my glass with two different bottles of booze, one of which was clear. Maureen brought it over, I told her what I saw, and sent it back AGAIN. After apologizing for the bar manager, Maureen herself poured my drink after 1st having me taste a small sip to verify it actually was what I ordered. Thankfully she was wonderful, because I was extremely annoyed. That's an extremely poor practice for a bar manager anywhere, but especially Max's, arguably one of nicer establishments in western mass. If you go, be wary of ordering a mixed drink is Allison is working. She clearly thinks her patrons are too stupid to realize they're not getting what they ordered, and I don't doubt for a second that the top shelf booze you order will be replaced with well. read more

My grandparents were coming to visit from out of town and wanted a recommend for dinner for all of us. I'm embarrassed that I gave the recommend for Max's. There were six (6) of us in the party and the only dish that was good was the beef barley soup. The chopped salad was bland, they shouldn't even offer this salad off season. Two (2) filets were on the tough side, (how does that even happen?!). Prime rib was small and had no flavor. Calamari was like chewing on rubber bands :-( I would have gotten a better meal at McDonald's. The bar couldn't even produce a decent drink, either too strong or too weak. If you are looking for a super strong cup of coffee though, Max's is the place! Totally disappointed in Max's Tavern. Expensive and terrible food. So, if you want to go for a meal of bread and beef barley soup...this is your place! read more

This place is fantastic! It's a go-to spot for me and my husband, especially when we are celebrating a special event. The service can be a little on the slow side, but we prefer that for special occasions as we don't want to feel rushed. Pan pressed chicken is amazing - steaks are always cooked perfect. Highly recommend! read more

This is a really wonderful restaurant. The food is great, salads , particularly the chopped salad, superb. Drinks and service excellent. Great inside or out. read more

Very good food and service. I can't wait to try maxs oyster house.

The food was phenomenal! However the service needs improvement! Upon arrival there wasn't a host at the door. I waited about 5-6 minutes before the hostess came up to greet my wife and I. Waitress was efficient in taking our orders but was not engaging. It took about 15-20 minutes after finishing our meal for the waitress to cone and ask if we wanted dessert. read more

My favorite steak restaurant around! Great filet and mashed potatoes. Delicious garlic bread too. Love to come here for special occasions and a real nice dinner. read more

There with a party of 4. We all had various forms of beef; all cooked to our order perfectly... and delicious. Kale salad with beets was wonderful. I've had better onion soup. Crab cake/Filet ("Oscar") and Steak au poivre (if you like peppercorns) were standout meals. Vegetables were fresh and well cooked. I really loved the Roasted Wild Mushrooms. Ordered Fried Onion Strings for the table... excellent. Wine by the glass was reasonable for a very smooth, drinkable Cab at $9. Atmosphere can be iffy. It you want a quiet corner, ask when booking. Some area are definitely noisier than others. Our service was very good, I'd say excellent for a Saturday night. Best beef in the area. read more

Great atmosphere and usually decent service but lately Maxs Tavern seems to be off its game. The menu is getting tired and honestly the food quality is less than what I expect from the Max group. Good place that could be great. But isn't. read more

I was a first time diner at Max's Tavern, and I can tell you, I WILL BE DINING THERE AGAIN VERY SOON. I was with a girlfriend of mine Julie , who also works there, and I'm so glad she turned me on to a great place to eat with an even greater atmosphere.. We were seated right away, and our waitress was Jess and she came right over and she was very pleasant. I ordered fried onion soup, and a steak, my girlfriend and I shared a Cobb salad with chicken which was by far the best salad, I've ever had...the food came out pretty quickly which I was very impressed about. The manager went out of his way to make my first dining experience at Max' Tavern the best ever, and to ensure I would return to the establishment, and I can tell you I will most definitely will be returning.... So if you want great food, a great atmosphere and amazing staff, I would make your way to Max's Tavern as quick as you can, you won't be disappointed... read more

Went there on 1/9/16 for a family dinner. The food was great, everything. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and did not hover, but we never had to wait too long when we needed something. Prices are a bit high, but overall a great dining out experience. read more

Had dinner there last nite 4 July 2016. I was super impressed. The waitress was awesome, had the right pace and was patient. I wanted dinner to last two hours so we could see the fireworks and that was no problem. The bus staff was awesome too, I asked if I could take the chairs from the table to move and watch the fireworks, the bus guy went and got us three chairs to use. Those guys were busy too.. I really appreciated them going the extra mile. I will be back 100% for sure. read more

Excellent food, but it should be for the price. I'm not complaining, but just know that it won't be an inexpensive dinner here.
