Tired of companies hiding behind Covid for the lousy meals. Been along time customer and have been disappointed for the second time in the past 2 years. Order the signature dish of the filet of Oscar which ended up being a crab cake on the side with a filet next to it with over cooked asparagus flooded with bread crumbs. Also asked for mashed potatoes and cream of broccoli. Ordered a ribeye with sautéed beanies mushrooms. Worst meal ever! Filet of Oscar is a beautifully done filet with crab meat on top with a gorgeous bernaise sauce and cooked to perfection asparagus. None of this happened. Stop hiding behind Covid this is a signature dish and was pathetic. I have eaten this same dish for over 10 years and don't mind paying the money for it. Not today. They decided to charge us as a filet and a crab cake appetizer separately. They think if you have a couple of drinks you're not paying attention far from it. Waste including the not Ribeye that served which was clearly a sirloin. Again stop hiding behind Covid and don't put waitresses through hell for it it's not fair to them. read more

This place has great food, but like a lot of the rest of the Max's chain, it is pretty expensive. However, this one is right near the Basketball Hall of Fame (they have some basketball pictures inside, but it is in the motif of what you would expect out of a steakhouse) Most of their apps are seafood based and I don't eat seafood. So I had the garlic bread which was exquisite. For the entree, the first time I went there I got the NY strip au poivre. It was so good, that the next week (both times for a business function), I got the same thing! The desert looks good. I had the triple chocolate bread pudding which was delicious, but small for $6-7. The service is good as well. It is a little out of my price range for a typical night out, but if you can get someone to pay for it, by all means, go for it! read more

Love this place. I live in Boston and have access to many great restaurants daily but when I visit my friend in western mass there are far and few good restaurants to choose from. Th service is great, atmosphere perfect and the food is always great. We started with the wings and had the most perfect burger...thanks for the cold beer and a great afternoon...thumbs up max's!!! Not from the area, and decided to swing through on our way south. We sat with the lunch crowd and was pleasantly surprised. I went in having conflicting expectations from reading most of the reviews, but the friendly waitstaff changed my mind almost immediately. The hostess and waitstaff were very friendly and assisted us with several questions about food preparation. The portions were appropriate for lunch and reasonably priced. I'm sure that if we were ever swinging through Springfield again, a trip to Max's may be in order. read more

When out for Valentines Day and had a great time. My wife and I sat in the dining room in a booth. We started with raw oysters and the fish tacos. They were both amazing. I did find she'll in a couple of oysters, but not to bad. Typically I would expect to have zero for the price. Salads were just ok. I got the wedge salad with blue cheese. My wife got the Tuscan salad which she loved. Dinner we ordered the Berkshire pork chop and brick oven chicken. They both were very good, but the pork chop had chipotle apple butter on it which made the meal! read more

I honestly don't understand what the hype is about Max's. My in-laws had reservations at 7p (or so they told us) one night that they could not make, so we took their place. When we arrived, the hostess told us we did not have reservations. Knowing my in-laws can be flighty, I suggested she check another time. Low and behold, our reservations were actually at 7:30p. With an extra half hour before our actual reservations, she suggested we go to the bar. We waited ten minutes and did not get service, so we left and went to Samuel's for a drink. I remember nothing spectacular about the meal. I can, however, say that they had bacon wrapped asparagus on the side. I asked if I could could have asparagus without. They told me no. That to me says all of the food is pre-made. Why would I want pre-made food at their prices? If the service was friendlier and the food half the cost, I might give it another star. My wife and I have been going to Max's Tavern for years, and until recently, we have enjoyed it. The food was good, and the service attentive. However, yesterday, we sat at the bar and had dinner, and were not happy. First, it was very loud. While I understand that it was a Thursday evening, we chose to go to a decent restaurant, not a sports bar. Secondly, while our appetizers arrived in a decent time, our meal (we shared the hangar steak) didn't arrive until 30 minutes after we had finished our appetizers. The bartender gave us each a glass of port as an apology for the meal taking so long, but that was when we got dessert: good intervention, but badly timed. Lastly, we shared the creme brulee for dessert. It was delicious; however, once we finished it, I saw a long hair at the bottom. The manager and bartender were extremely apologetic, but only took the dessert and a drink off the bill. Had he taken care of the entire meal, we would return. As it is, it will be some time before we do. read more

I haven't been here in years. But i have to say, after going recently... i was pleasantly surprised. The decor and menu have greatly improved. The drinks were well crafted. Although i have to say the profit margins on some of the drinks are a bit demanding (overpriced) two fingers of a $50 bottle of whiskey for $14 is a bit much. But ultimately the service was cordial and knowledgeable. The food was good and portions were filling. I will definitely go again. Now sure where to start. I've been to Max's Tavern several times before with good results. Unfortunately i stopped for dinner a few days ago with 3 others and had an awful evening. I believe the biggest problem is poor training. We knew the server was out of her element from the beginning. Slow with taking dinner orders and generally uncomfortable with our menu questions. Three of us ordered French onion soup. Although the top was hot the broth was luke warm at best. We send them back and even though we each sampled our soups, the kitchen only attempted to reheat the soup. When the server brought them back she had no idea who to return each soup to. The soup was still like warm but now the top was burnt. One of us returned the soup and the others just eat a small amount. When dinner was served the order of steak milanese was actually chicken milanese (not even on the menu). When this was brought to the servers attention she tried to convince us that this was steak. She finally took it back and placed an order for the steak. At this point the manager got involved and made matters worse by telling us that the chicken dish would be in the menu soon and there was a mix up in the kitchen. She had little concern of this issue or the soup problem that should have been resolved by serving new soups rather than trying to figure out who got what soup. When the steak milanese finally got to our table, after the rest of us finished our meals, it was a horrendous thin burnt slab. It was pounded so thin that the steak or whatever it was inside had no taste and combined with the burnt outside was not able to be eaten. We called the manager back and we heard another story about how the dish is made and this is how it should be. She did finally admit they have gotten many complaints on this dish. She then took it back and replaced it with a regular steak which the diner took home as we had long finished our meals. The manager did offer desserts and removed the soups and botched diners meal from the check but the experience really was disturbing. It's sad that a restaurant of this level has personnel so poorly trained, from the server to the manager to the chef. It will be a long while that this restaurant sees any of our party. read more

I went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago with my boyfriend. There weather was nice so we sat on the patio. We didn't have a reservation but the hostess was very nice and found us a table outside. The patio was set up nicely, my only complaint is that when it got dark, we couldn't see anything. Our server Meghan was great. She was very knowledgable and made some great suggestions. What my boyfriend and I enjoyed most about her was her ability to provide good conversation. She was clearly busy but still attentive and able to provide timely service. The oysters were fresh and came with a delicious mignonette. Unfortunately they were out of the tuna tacos. We had hoped to try them after we read the reviews. I ordered the Scallops and my boyfriend ordered the Filet Oscar that was on special. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. I especially enjoyed the risotto that came with the Scallops. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because of how dark it was on the patio and because they were out of what seems to be a popular item. LOVED Max's! Came here for my 30th birthday with my husband and 5 friends. The food was great, the wine was wonderful. Got the oysters as an app and they were very fresh - Blue Points were delicious! The filet was cooked perfectly (med rare - you're stupid if you get your steak cooked well/med well). The loaded baked potato was a little disappointing, but still went well with the steak. At the end of the meal, our waiter brought over the creme brulee (so good!) and a card signed by the entire staff! So wonderful to have a caring restaurant =) read more

Very good steaks which reflect the prices on the menu. I have eaten at this establishment on many occasions and never had a bad experience!

I have been here maybe 6 times now, for lunch only. Each time I have sat in the seats behind the bar. So my review for lunch in the bar only. I always get one of the salads. I have NEVER been able to finish one! The restaurant is directly next to the NBA basketball hall of fame. read more

If this is the best Springfield has to offer for fine dining I would suggest driving somewhere else. I have been told Max's is on par with a Capital Grille or Morton's but in all honesty it falls very very short on the comparison. The food is OK though not worth the price. We had the Garlic Bread with the fondue dipping sauce. Garlic Bread were basically frozen sticks thawed out and baked. The filet was good and cooked just right but then the dessert, the cheesecake, was so small that i was amazed at what they charged me. The place falls short in many ways from the dining experience. I went here not too long ago for my anniversary. We went on a weeknight because restaurants are less busy so we wouldn't have to wait so long. We were seated right away and our waitress was friendly and introduced herself minutes after we sat. I ordered wine and my husband got a soda. The wine list is pretty impressive. Since I'm not a wine connoisseur I decided to go with a glass as opposed to a bottle. I do think wine fans would be very pleased with what's available. For an appetizer we got the spinach and artichoke dip. It was pretty good. The size was a little disappointing seeing as how it was promoted as being a starter for more than one person. The flavor was nice though. For dinner I chose the scallops. The meals came out in a reasonable amount of time. The plating was very nice and professional. The portion was okay. The flavor though was really good. The scallops were cooked to just right. I love risotto and the apple risotto was right up my alley. Tasty but not overwhelming. I ordered the garlic mashed potatoes as my side. They were also pretty good. A little bland for my liking, but I added a little salt and pepper and they were edible. My husband ordered the lobster cioppino and he liked it. He ate the entire meal! I don't like lobster so I didn't try his meal, but it did look nice. For dessert we decided on coffee and the creme brulee. The dessert was really good. I had no where to put it after finishing my dinner, but I soldiered on because I love my desserts. It was crunchy and soft. I don't know how they do that. Overall, our experience was pleasant. Our server was a little cold, but she delivered everything in a timely manner. Its location, while not being exactly downtown Springfield, is still a cause for concern. You never know who's going to jump you as you walk to your car. This restaurant would be nice for a special occasion. I can't see paying these prices for a regular dinner. read more

Dinner tonight for the first time here. The food was amazing. Too bad our waiter was not so amazing. We felt like we were an after thought for everything. I really wanted this to be a great experience; a good friend of mine and myself, drove an hour and 15 min to meet here a few weeks ago, it was the half way point for both of us to meet. We had checked the menu, everything looked and sounded amazing so we were really excited for dinner and even made reservations as it was a Friday night. We show up, are seated immediately, and both of us head to the restroom after dropping our coats off at the table. We come back, a server stops by asking if someone has been over already and we both said no, that we had just sat down, the server said okay and left. We waited about 5-6 minutes for water until she came back. Look around at the menu. Ordered a glass of wine and some apps. The raw bar stuff was great; we had oysters, little neck clams, and lobster claws; the literal only highlight of the meal. We ordered our meals; I had a ribeye and my friend had the filet. I ordered mine medium rare and my friend ordered her filet rare; the steaks come out and my ribeye is absolutely well done and the filet is medium well. 6-7 minutes go by and we're just sitting there with untouched steaks in front of us before another server in the section next to us sees us and pops in to see if we're okay, then our server comes over and asks; we both say no and both steaks go back while we keep our sides to snack on while we wait. The new steaks come out and the filet is good, the ribeye however was so salty it was literally inedible; I don't like to send food back, I hate to but I could not eat what tasted like a salt block. The manager was very professional and concerned with everything, he took my steak off, offered me another meal, and then bought us dessert, the usual recovery at a restaurant but honestly none of that could replace the fact that I was now going to drive home an hour and 15 minutes, to eat cereal for dinner. I know that fluke nights happen in restaurants, I get it, but between two steaks being prepared and neither being edible and the poor service of having to wait for the server to do check backs, it really irritated me. I wanted this experience to be so good because it was a special occasion and it just wasn't; I unfortunately will not be coming back to a place that I thought could become a date night spot. The apps, dessert, and menu were good so that's why I'm giving it a (generous) 2 stars. The server was awful; I recommend hiring someone who actually pays attention to their section (especially when it's slow) and cares about their guests experience. read more

Our experience at Max's Tavern was a mixed bag. When we first arrived the hostess(blonde) looked us up and down and was generally unfriendly as she walked us to a table. When we asked to sit at a different table, without eye contact she pointed out an area we could select a table. As she cleared the table of extra silverware, again, she acted like she'd rather be anywhere else. We ordered drinks some appetizers and entrees. The drink was exactly what we wanted. Oysters were fresh. One of the entrees was half good--noodles had a delicious flavor but the scallops were over cooked. The chicken penne dish was not good at all. The chicken was dry and tough and the penne was rubbery. We talked with a manager, who was pleasant, to return the dish. We really wish this had been a better experience overall. read more

Our waiter (wish I could remember his name) was very personable and seemed knowledgeable plus the host and supporting staff were all very pleasant. Thus the 2 stars. The Bad. The prices. When the waiter brought out a steak knife to cut my $38 fillet I jokingly said I hoped I didn't need it.....I did. The ugly. Even though my waiter knew that I was kind of planning my meal choice around the "bourbon, bacon, butter" sauce, when it was served to me, it had so much garlic (not mentioned in the ingredients) that I couldn't taste any other ingredient, except maybe the butter (I'm not sure there were any other ingredients). Despite the fact that I told our waiter about this (he stated that he wasn't even aware that it included garlic and did offer to get me alternative, which I declined as I was fed up by that time), I was still charged for it. I may sound petty because I'm complaining about this as it was only $1.50 (as I recall but may have been more) but the fact that they didn't deduct the charge from the bill was even more so. read more
