Been to this spot a few times since moving to waldwick 4 months ago. They offer your typical diner menu and prices. Place gets really busy on Sunday's! You may not get a parking spot. Service is good - nothing to write home about. I do enjoy the food especially the challah bread French toast. They even have maple syrup as an alternative option which I was really happy about! (It's $3 extra I believe). My mom also has a fish allergy and they were understanding and made sure her food was made separately. Management indifferent. One of the nicest things of a traditional diner, is a welcoming atmosphere. My family's been going here for over 25 years at least once a week, and the managers still don't even bother to learn our names or great us with any kind of cheer. It's weird. Servers are friendly and great, food is ok, but mainly growing less enamored of lack of welcome. They do a lot of business so they don't feel like they have to put in much effort. I've been coming to this diner for 25 years (I am 25 by the way) and my dad and grandpa have been coming to this place since it opened. My family and I always come for breakfast or lunch and their food is consistently good. HIGHLY recommend their pancakes and their gravy fries (my FAVORITE thing ever). We had an order delivered from Door Dash. I got the Spanakopita with a salad and my boyfriend got the chopped steak (cooked medium) with cottage cheese. Easy enough. My food was just fine, the Spanakopita being some of the best I've had since becoming mildly obsessed with it, and the salad was meh. (That dressing is rank, though.) My boyfriend, however, had a rough go of it. Nowhere on Door Dash's site did it say that a whole fucking salad came on top of the cottage cheese. It just said "with cottage cheese". He spent at least 10 minutes taking the salad off, but it was all for naught because the cottage cheese was warm. Yuck. And his meat was definitely under the medium doneness. KITCHEN POISONED ME I ordered the Chicken Florentine dinner and was deliver the Fish Florentine dinner. I'm highly allergic to fish and ended up having to go to their bathroom and throwing up my entire meal. I started to have a bad allergic reaction and was concerned that I might experience Anaphylactic Shock. The salad bar is very basic with only a handful of times, probably one of the sparsest ones in all of NJ. In all my years of having a fish allergy, I generally ask if items are cooked on the same stove area or use the same cooking utensils. I cannot recall a mix up to this level which could have resulted in my death. The waitress was brand new and didn't refill our waters until we begged the busboy. We were there on a Wednesday night when the parking lot was mostly empty. The waitress didn't know if they could make ice coffee for example and had to repeatedly ask others for any simple question - she obviously didn't know the menu at all. I'd have to put the entire experience as one of the absolute worst restaurant experiences in my life. Thankfully Bergen County NJ is filled with many other great diners, our favorite is the Tom Sawyer which is only minutes away, or any of the multitude of diners on Route 17 are a far better choice. It was a horrible experience for our family. They didn't even offer to pack up our meals and my poor wife couldn't finish her meal and was concerned for my health. We didn't pay for our unfinished meals as the potential medical emergency was the top priority. After throwing up for 5 minutes in the bathroom, to extract all the poison to my body, I had to rush home to take 50 Mg of Benadryl. My lips are still all swollen as I write this accurate review. I'm extremely upset over the entire incident and feel I'll have to report them to the local health inspectors in the morning, since they showed GROSS INCOMPETENCE. I don't want any other people harmed by their questionable business and health practices. One of the owners was there and offered to call 911, but I don't like to make big scenes and just wanted to get out of there. He never even said "the meal is on us" or apologized. He seemed more concerned with potential liability for their incompetence. The waitress did not apologize and you would think for my wife and kids they would have offered to package their unfinished meals to go, so someone could at least have dinner. Unreal horrible experience. They did give me a name and number to call the next day, what good is that? They managed to ruin my children's last day of school for the year which we were celebrating. If you come here a lot, you probably know your personal favorites so it's hard for a newbie to have good luck distinguishing which ones those are going to be. Best advise to give you is to ask the waiter what's the most popular dish. Unfortunately, I wasn't so smart to ask and went with their Saturday special menu NY steak sirloin dinner (complete with a beverage, salad bar or soup, entree obviously and dessert) for $21. Not bad right? Well, we started off well with an onion soup but it wasn't French onion which I didn't know until I got it. Nevertheless, it was delicious. (First) Steak was the issue. Very very dry even when I requested it medium. There wasn't even a hint of pink on it. I ate two bites and couldn't finish it. My mother in law complained for me. I wasn't going to say anything because I wasn't sure this place even knew what good medium steak looks like. When she did, the waiter brought another steak to go for. To my surprise, it was totally different. Not dry, perfectly cooked to pink. They gained one star at that point from 2. Honestly, I wouldn't bother going back again. I've been eating dinner at Matthews usually two-three times a week since moving back to the area a few years ago. The food has never disappointed and I've never had a complaint or a problem. The City Grille is an underrated delight. And the Oreo Cheesecake is always my go-to dessert. The nighttime staff is easily one of the best in the area. Spyro is a gracious manager and Marcella & Brianna are great hosts and always at the door with a smile. Regardless of who my server is - Tia, Niki, Jackie, Geffory, Porfilio, Damian, Randall, or Raul - the service is always consistent and exceptional. When I bring in visitors from out of town, they are always blown away by the hospitality here. We came for a late dinner and were welcomed and received good service by a great waitress. She was very attentive and made sure we got our order in. Then the local soccer team arrived and got really loud and disruptive. Our waitress was the only one in the section and made sure we got our order in before the big table with the soccer team put their order in. We received our food right away and was very good. We had to put headphones to work on our computers because it was really loud. Service was great and then I guess our waitress and management were discussing the big top and payments. Management then started yelling in front of all the customers to the waitress saying why she messed up and order and who trained you?? The waitress was trying to explain and management kept yelling saying she is not doing any favors. The manager then yelled out loud and told the waitress to leave. I thought this was VERY UNPROFESSIONAL from the management side. He did not have to yell at her in front of everyone and tell her to leave that is not how you treat people. We didn't even get to pay our waitress because she left. I don't like how management treated her and embarrassed her in front of everyone. If he was professional enough he would have pulled aside in the back and sorted out the dilema. I recommend that management learns how to treat their staff in front of everyone whether she was wrong or not. Not a good look or experience. This was my first visit to Matthew's Diner. It was a Sunday at 1pm. I received a warm welcome and I said that I would take a seat at the counter. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sienna specialty sandwich which came with fries, cole slaw and pickle. I enjoyed my meal while watching women's soccer on the television. It appears as if they're trying to go for the "American Casual" motif, with square plates and new food, but theyre failing at it. I ordered a grilled cheese with ham and tomato. The ham was tough and the tomato was disgusting. My friend ordered a Cobb salad with italian dressing and no blue cheese, but they forgot the dressing kept the cheese. Been going here since I was little! I love this diner, especially for breakfast. Their pancakes rock. All of their food is especially good. The service is always fantastic. It is family owned and I feel at home when I am there! They never disappoint. And it is always packed! And their mile high chocolate cake... I can't even begin to tell you how good it is. I grew up a few blocks away from this diner and spent countless breakfasts, lunches and dinners with my grandparents, parents, elementary school friends, girl scouts, soccer teams, etc. There is something so wonderful about Matthews and I feel that probably because of my extreme nostalgia but also because I never had a bad experience here. Matthews diner is one of my favorite places to go to. Even when dining alone. For breakfast I order the egg whites and bacon and home fries and everything melts in your mouth. Lunch I'll get the tuna salad and side salad. Tunas always fresh and solid white albacore which I'm picky about. Dinner I enjoy the chicken kabob over the yellow rice. Chicken is marinated and super tender. The vegetables that are grilled with it are so delicious as well. The portions here are huge and I always take half home with me for the next day or for work. But it's always a double human sized portion. Don't eat all that at once, oh no. I love the service. I've only had one problem there with service. I waited 10 minutes, I was alone, for service. I never mind that. Then the waitress comes over and rushes me while I'm speaking. I realize I didn't even order my coffee. She moved to the next table. I waited for the gentleman to end his order and wanting to grab her attention before she could zoom away I said excuse me and she puts her finger up in front of her face and says super loudly "just hold on I'm taking his order now". I felt like shit!!! "He says that's okay to her, I'm finished". She comes over in a nasty mood I tell her of the coffee she says nothing. Walks over to another waitress and says something. The waitress looked over and says I hate that too. Well aside from her not coming to refill my coffee cup again or returning with my take home container and slamming my check down on my table. Guess what else she didn't do that night? The BIOTCH did NOT get one penny for a tip. And I am known for tipping very well. Sad she works there. Now this is a diner! Always clean, great service and I have always been pleased with my meals. (Granted I stick to the usuals like cheeseburgers, and breakfast) I have recently reviewed the Suburban Diner in Paramus and that place is gross! Do yourself a favor and give Matthews Diner your business! Matthews Diner is one of my husband's all time favorite places, ever! It's probably more jam packed with nostalgia than anything else, but he is happy every time we leave here! Matthews has that traditional NJ Diner vibe, overflowing dessert cases, huge menu, a laid back atmosphere. We went in on Easter Sunday and they had a good crowd, but it wasn't too busy. Service was pretty slow because it did seem like the staff got tables that were all seated around the same time. With such a large menu, its hard to narrow down what you want to order. So many tasty things!! Solid all day breakfast menu, but I decided to go for a Philly cheese steak. It was quite tasty and the portion was huge. My husband gets the chicken parm sub every time he comes here. He mentioned they changed it a bit since the last time he had been it, but it was still delicious. It's a diner. Adjust your expectations accordingly, and everything will be just fine. One of the biggest, unfortunate standouts that I noticed immediately while dining here last night was that the number of items on the menu is simply overwhelming. Matthews has combined their breakfast menu ("All Day Breakfast") with their lunch/dinner fare, but this isn't the problem, as the breakfast is a normal selection spanning about three pages. It's the fact that the dinner options comprise EIGHT pages, not including the "Dastardly Desserts," wine list, or breakfast menu (which would have brought the total to thirteen to fourteen pages)! After scanning Matthews's offerings for what seemed like forever - and even asking the waiter for additional time to make my final selection - I decided on what appeared to be the only non-cheese vegetarian dish: the Veggie Burger (Reg. $5.25, Deluxe $7.25). I have the tendency to be a picky eater, in large part due to my vegetarian diet and general intolerance to dairy products. But even if I settled for a meatless dish containing cheese, my choices would have remained extremely limited. Of course, I'm used to struggling when ordering at restaurants, but at a diner with a fourteen page menu?! Matthews, I commend you for serving veggie burgers, but you desperately need to step up your game for those of us with dietary restrictions. While we were waiting for our entrees, a few members of my party headed to the salad bar, which was included in their orders. Earlier, one of them had asked the waiter what the salad bar was like, to which he responded: "There are a few options." When they returned with their plates of lettuce, a few scattered tomatoes, and dressing, we knew our waiter wasn't exaggerating. It was enough to hold them over until their meals arrived, but the salads looked truly pitiful. I received my veggie burger, and the presentation was actually quite nice. It was served open face, with lettuce and tomato, cole slaw, a pickle, and French fries. The size of my meal, as well as everyone else's, was massive. The best part about this is that I know I'm getting my money's worth. At the same time, however, it was a little sad to see the amount of food that was left over at the end of the meal. My burger was decent. It didn't taste freezer burned, like many restaurant veggie burgers I've tried in the past. It may be because it was drowned in cooking oil, though. The fries were equally as greasy. The quality of the patty they use is where Matthews wins its points; I'm pretty familiar with the mainstream vegetarian meat substitutes that are out there, and there's no question that this one was a Dr. Praeger's California Veggie Burger. So overall, it wasn't lacking in flavor or real vegetables. At the end of our dinner, the general consensus was that Matthews Diner does breakfast and brunch much better than its later meals. We actually come here often- it's close to home and convenient, always good food, and most notable always great friendly and effecient service. The owners Spiro and Sam are very accommodating, and alrhough the whole staff is great, we especially love our favorite waitress Kinga. She really cares and very much knows her customers. I actually forgot to order tomatoes on the BBQ chicken wrap that I usually order, and she remembered! ( "dont you usually have tomatoes with that ?) That's what I call personal and great service!
