It's not often that I come across a REALLY great lunch deal...I mean one that makes you do a double take on your bill. Inside, it's nice and carpeted (my 3 year old son even took off his shoes/socks!) with lots of space and seats. Now, get this, the lunch special includes a cup of soup, beverage AND dessert with the entree! I got a grilled chicken wrap that had sundried tomatoes and fresh mozzarella chunks. It was sooo yummy! And, the price? $8.75. Crazy, right? Usually lunch specials that include everything under the sun are subpar and slapdash productions. You know, limp lettuce and flat soda. From a perusal around the dining room I could tell the other entrees were delish as well. Also on the lunch special menu are salads (that are pretty big), sandwich specials $7.25, gyros, Philly cheesesteak, and daily specials like Beef Goulash or Chicken Cacciatore. I wouldn't recommend the crab cakes, though (as with most places they used imitation crab meat). And, to top off the meal I had a great chocolate chip mint ice cream (three mini scoops) that my son loved. I didn't have to order anything for him since he ate some of my wrap and fries. I highly recommend this spot for when you want to meet up with your mommy friends. It's a true recession special! http://www.mirabest.com read more

Love the desserts (and I am not a dessert person). Family and service staff are very kind. My children love the omelettes and pancakes. A few things....newspapers for diners to look through would be great and a low cost, eating alone doesn't mean you should get a less then desirable table, consistent pricing, and fresh fruit every day. Most importantly, I got a *shrug* when the wi-fi didn't work. I had work to do and had to leave. :( read more

Matthews Diner is one of my favorite places to eat! The food is always great, friendly staff and owners, but it's the service by Tara, the best server EVER that makes me come back every time! Pete not Rich! read more

We actually come here often- it's close to home and convenient, always good food, and most notable always great friendly and effecient service. The owners Spiro and Sam are very accommodating, and alrhough the whole staff is great, we especially love our favorite waitress Kinga. She really cares and very much knows her customers. I actually forgot to order tomatoes on the BBQ chicken wrap that I usually order, and she remembered! ( "dont you usually have tomatoes with that ?) That's what I call personal and great service! The Diner is always clean too- and that's very important especially in these trying times. Thanx Matthews for the good food, and always making us feel so comfortable. read more

Went today for a late breakfast / early lunch. I grew up in Waldwick and have been going to Mathew's for years. We ordered a three egg omelette (no way did they use 3 it was small). Three other orders were good except fries were skimpy. Waitress was horrible! When she brought food she dropped a pickle on the table and said "that pickle is yours " and left it. She walked away and when she returned she ignored it. We asked for hot sauce and she never brought it. We got up to get it ourselves and she saw and asked what we needed and told her she said they only had one bottle. After we finished she came to our small table of four (not a booth) and asked us to hand her our plates. Won't be back read more

Went to Matthews for breakfast with my daughter. I had eggs with corned beef hash and she had an omelet. It was very good everything was perfect. It seems to be a little pricey 28.00. I guess prices have gone up all over. Would definitely recommend this diner. Can't wait to go back. read more

Good quality diner. Very popular. I'm here on a Thursday at 2PM, eating the lunch special. ~$9.00. Handi-accessible. Courteous staff. Quick! And there's maybe five+ infants on here... I also can't hear every word of my neighbors. = good acoustics. Oh. And clean. read more

Matthews Diner - Good food, clean place, fast service. - Diners Near Me - Waldwick, New Jersey

I've been coming here since I was a child. Always a great, dynamic menu. Pretty much anything on the menu is a safe bet. Their seasoned waffle fries are my reason for existence. This is a true step above your average Jersey diner. I crave Matthews when I'm hundreds of miles away at college during the school year. Matthew's recently renovated their exterior to bring it into this century; very classy and modern. read more

Stopped in before a funeral. Clean tables and restrooms. Good food and fast service. Coffee was very good and staff were friendly. A surprising and nice experience. Just a great diner. read more

Awesome resturant with awesome food. I go there every week after a hard day and we don't feel like cooking at all. Nice place, great food, why not? The only problem for me is that the menu is around 15 pages, and each page has about 12-15 items on it, so they have around 180-225 items on the menu, which needs to go down. But it's a diner, so that isn't really a issue. read more

I've been a customer of Matthew's diner for over 25 years. We used to come at least 3 times a week while I was working and as an owner of 3 restaurants myself it was just fun for my wife and 4 kids to go out. The worst thing about tonight is that they charged $3.90 for my wife's 8 oz iced tea and when I asked the manager about if that was correct he said she ordered a 2nd glass. SHAME ON YOUR ESTABLISHMENT FOR CHARGING $1.95 EXTRA FOR THE LEAST EXPENSIVE ITEM ON THE MENU WHICH WAS NOT EVEN ASKED FOR AS IT WAS BOUGHT WITH MY 2ND CUP OF COFFEE. ( which I was not charged fir I suggested to the manager that he should reconsider charging for a refill of iced tea that costs less than any item on the menu...even less than a glass of soda. His response was abrupt and as a matter of fact and hat was just policy. I'm sad to say that I'm going to be a customer that will not be returning just because of principle. read more

this is the absolute best dinner of all times. It serves amazing and delicious food. people should and have to go here because of how amazing it is. Great family diner. Been coming here for years. The service is fast and friendly. Food portion was huge and the prices were very good. The French dip is to die for. Also try the mile high chocolate cake. You won't regret it. read more

Matthews Diner is an okay spot to eat. It's not fantastic, but it's not terrible. It's a town staple, but, not something I come to all that often. There are better options in the area, but sometimes you want to sit down to have a classic diner experience. Even then I only come because it's so close to where I live. read more

Hands down the best place to get breakfast food portions are a lot and the price is just right and the quality of food is great I come at least 2x a month all the way from The Bronx!!! read more

Nothing better than a classic American diner like Matthew's! You have to get breakfast and a chocolate shake, no matter the time of day! I wish it was open 24/7, but at least they still have great hours... and they deliver! read more

A lot better diners in the area. Just very mediocre. I came here a lot because I grew up in the same town and I was never impressed with the food and service. read more

A little disappointed in the last few times I've been here. It seems to just be going down hill a little. I hope it changes because I really used to love this place. I just got a salad and my favorite thing that comes with their salads is their usually warm fresh pita bread. However the salad I got tonight came with the most stale pita I've ever had. It was a to go order but my husband and I live 3 min away. Pita wouldn't harden like that in a quick car ride. Also my husband's burger didn't come with the coleslaw pickles or cutlery it usually comes with .... kind of a disappointment tonight. Please Matthews pull it together and improve!! You are a staple!!! read more

We moved to the area few years ago and we pass this diner all the time. We keep saying we should try it because the parking lot is always full. So today we finally did. The place is clean and nice. The staff is very friendly and the service is quick. The food on the other hand was awful! I wanted to like this place because it's so convenient but all 4 meals we ordered were really bad. My son couldn't eat the chicken because it was so overcooked and dry. He just had fries. I had a wrap and it was so soggy and the chicken was so try. I asked for extra sauce just so I could dip into something. My husband ate a few bites of his burger and couldn't force himself to eat more. My daughter just played with her pasta and said it wasn't good. Such a shame. Maybe we went on a bad day?!?! They need to hire better cooks. read more

Everything is spot on every time I eat from there. Can't go wrong with Mathews for breakfast

I love eating here, the food is great and made at a reasonable time and great price. The only problem I've ever really had is the attitude coming from the staff. There's this one waitress that just acts like she hates her job and tosses food down on the table as if she's feeding peasants and the cashiers are hardly ever smiling, which is a bit off putting. But if you're looking for some great food, I recommend to go here. read more

This is an awesome diner! Our lunch was great and came out quickly. We had a lot of orders for our party of 8, and Matthew didn't miss anything. Excellent burgers, fries and the pancakes were really really good (and huge). Almost went back for dinner the next day! read more

The absolute worst most bland breakfast potatoes I've ever eaten. This less than mediocre diner amazes me that it's been in business for so long and continues to be busy. I've been there about 10 times. It's the only diner in that area , probably the only reason it does as well as it does . read more

The food was scrumptious. The service was impeccable. The salad bar was eh..but it was 9:30 Saturday night. 5 stars.

While there is a little bit of everything on a huge menu it just consistently falls short. I don't expect Michelin star food at a dinner but the quality just isn't there. Simple items like buffalo wings are served cold (freezer bought pre-cooked wings no less) to the burning of hamburgers, and mushy fries. With so many other options in the area it's a major let down. read more

Been there maybe 3 times. We're a glutton for punishment as we've never had a good experience. Though food is average diner fair but sub-par compared to some of the better diners in the area. We've had staff forget about us...our waitress actually left once since I guess her shift was over...we saw her go to her car through the window. She must have then remembered because she then raced back in to collect our check and her tip....after I went to the register to ask them to have someone bring the check. Tiramisu (yes stupid to order in a diner, but we wanted to give it a shot as we were in the mood) turned out to be ice cream in a big glass. We had a waitress argue with us when we advised one of the dishes was wrong. I mean we were pretty sure we ordered a hamburger and not a cheeseburger? We're done with the place, but it's always packed, so they must be doing something right....maybe we've just got bad timing. Try it and the try the Suburban in Paramus, I think you'll like the food and service much better at the Suburban. read more

Nothing to write home about with the food. There are so many other diners in the area with much better quality of food, even when it's simple (sandwiches, soup, eggs, etc). There's no dish here that I can't get elsewhere (and done much better). But the real problem here is the service. Servers will ignore you, forget to refill glasses, leave dirty dishes piled up on the table and only come back to give you the check ... it's really bad. I don't blame the servers themselves for this, because the problem is so widespread among staff that management is clearly failing to train their people. It's sad. If you want a great diner experience, try the Suburban Diner in Paramus or the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst. Hell, go to Giovanna's Cafe in Ramsey (technically not a diner, but the food is outstanding variations of the dishes you'd find at Matthews). Matthews itself isn't worth it. Life's too short to eat bad food and put up with bad service. I decided not to go back after one bad experience but found myself getting dragged there multiple times for business lunches. Oh well, maybe they improved this time? No. Every time is awful and I leave angry. Now I just tell people I refuse to go and will literally eat anywhere else in Bergen County that they pick. read more

Matthew's is a pretty standard New Jersey diner, from the layout and decor to the extensive menu featuring an array of "appeteasers," all day breakfast, and full on entrees. We stopped by on Sunday afternoon and were able to snag a booth even though the place was pretty crowded. I had the pancakes with two eggs (over easy) and bacon, and I was satisfied - the bacon was crispy, the pancakes were huge, and the eggs were perfectly over easy (very rare at a diner). My other half had the bbq burger on pita, which was served open face, and he said it was very good as well. Our server was very efficient and attentive, and the restaurant was clean. Overall, Matthew's was a great place for a quick stop. We will definitely stop by again if we're in the area. read more

It's a diner. A perfectly good one. Don't hesitate to stop here, but don't go out of your way to get here, either.

Great place. It does get a little crowded here on a Friday night, but it is worth the wait. The turnover of tables is usually very quick, and they have a vestibule out front for waiting with benches. No matter what time of the day, you have to get their corn beef hash. I have never been let down by it, and always has that crust built up on the outside of it. They have a liquor license which is nice and they recently started delivering locally. Give this place a try. read more

Walked in and was greeted nicely by the hostess and a waitress. The 2 girls working there were both extremely nice. Me and my party of 6 sat down and decided what we wanted to eat. While we were waiting to order another party sat down behind us, they looked at their menus and promptly ordered... not sure where our waiter was. When our waiter arrived we ordered for the kids first, they didn't have Mac & Cheese so we found something else on the menu. When we asked for a Veggie burger they told us they were sold out. Disappointing but we asked what else they had for a vegetarian and were quickly told that they have nothing or we could check out the lo-carb section of the menu. Odd that they have nothing for a vegetarian so I asked again... you're a diner and you don't have anything for a vegetarian? Can you check in the back? The waiter then decided to share that he had been working there for 35 years and they have nothing else for vegetarians. Surprising since they have salad and French fries on the menu. Another waiter came over and asked our waiter (in Spanish) if he needed help but he said no. I don't know why it was so hard for our waiter to just ask in the kitchen, who know maybe the cook could have thrown something together for us, it is a diner right? They do have hundreds of items on the menu, maybe the cook could have worked some magic. We decided to leave, but not because we couldn't find something on the menu for a vegetarian but because the waiter just was not helpful at all. I use to love Matthews but I'll never return. read more

We've gone for breakfast with our twin boys - good diner food with great service!

I got some breakfast over here and it wasn't that good but I was content. If my experience ended here I still probably wouldn't come back and with that food I drank their water. After drinking a glass and finishing up my second glass of water I looked in it and I saw what looked like back wash with some green stuff floating around. Nothing I ate was green and I was confident whatever was in my drink didn't come outta my mouth. It was a lot floating and the waiter couldn't care less that she gave me contaminated ice. She shrugged her shoulders and walked away. The f**k? read more
