It's not often that I come across a REALLY great lunch deal...I mean one that makes you do a double take on your bill. Inside, it's nice and carpeted (my 3 year old son even took off his shoes/socks!) with lots of space and seats. Now, get this, the lunch special includes a cup of soup, beverage AND dessert with the entree! I got a grilled chicken wrap that had sundried tomatoes and fresh mozzarella chunks. It was sooo yummy! And, the price? $8.75. Crazy, right? Usually lunch specials that include everything under the sun are subpar and slapdash productions. You know, limp lettuce and flat soda. From a perusal around the dining room I could tell the other entrees were delish as well. Also on the lunch special menu are salads (that are pretty big), sandwich specials $7.25, gyros, Philly cheesesteak, and daily specials like Beef Goulash or Chicken Cacciatore. I wouldn't recommend the crab cakes, though (as with most places they used imitation crab meat). And, to top off the meal I had a great chocolate chip mint ice cream (three mini scoops) that my son loved. I didn't have to order anything for him since he ate some of my wrap and fries. I've been a customer of Matthew's diner for over 25 years. We used to come at least 3 times a week while I was working and as an owner of 3 restaurants myself it was just fun for my wife and 4 kids to go out. The worst thing about tonight is that they charged $3.90 for my wife's 8 oz iced tea and when I asked the manager about if that was correct he said she ordered a 2nd glass. SHAME ON YOUR ESTABLISHMENT FOR CHARGING $1.95 EXTRA FOR THE LEAST EXPENSIVE ITEM ON THE MENU WHICH WAS NOT EVEN ASKED FOR AS IT WAS BOUGHT WITH MY 2ND CUP OF COFFEE. ( which I was not charged fir I suggested to the manager that he should reconsider charging for a refill of iced tea that costs less than any item on the menu...even less than a glass of soda. I've been coming here since I was a child. Always a great, dynamic menu. Pretty much anything on the menu is a safe bet. Their seasoned waffle fries are my reason for existence. A little disappointed in the last few times I've been here. It seems to just be going down hill a little. I hope it changes because I really used to love this place. I just got a salad and my favorite thing that comes with their salads is their usually warm fresh pita bread. However the salad I got tonight came with the most stale pita I've ever had. It was a to go order but my husband and I live 3 min away. Pita wouldn't harden like that in a quick car ride. Awesome resturant with awesome food. I go there every week after a hard day and we don't feel like cooking at all. Nice place, great food, why not? The only problem for me is that the menu is around 15 pages, and each page has about 12-15 items on it, so they have around 180-225 items on the menu, which needs to go down. We moved to the area few years ago and we pass this diner all the time. We keep saying we should try it because the parking lot is always full. So today we finally did. The place is clean and nice. The staff is very friendly and the service is quick. The food on the other hand was awful! I wanted to like this place because it's so convenient but all 4 meals we ordered were really bad. My son couldn't eat the chicken because it was so overcooked and dry. He just had fries. I had a wrap and it was so soggy and the chicken was so try. I asked for extra sauce just so I could dip into something. My husband ate a few bites of his burger and couldn't force himself to eat more. My daughter just played with her pasta and said it wasn't good. Such a shame. Maybe we went on a bad day?!?! They need to hire better cooks. read more

Matthew's is a pretty standard New Jersey diner, from the layout and decor to the extensive menu featuring an array of "appeteasers," all day breakfast, and full on entrees. We stopped by on Sunday afternoon and were able to snag a booth even though the place was pretty crowded. I had the pancakes with two eggs (over easy) and bacon, and I was satisfied - the bacon was crispy, the pancakes were huge, and the eggs were perfectly over easy (very rare at a diner). My other half had the bbq burger on pita, which was served open face, and he said it was very good as well. Our server was very efficient and attentive, and the restaurant was clean. Overall, Matthew's was a great place for a quick stop. We will definitely stop by again if we're in the area. read more

Walked in and was greeted nicely by the hostess and a waitress. The 2 girls working there were both extremely nice. Me and my party of 6 sat down and decided what we wanted to eat. While we were waiting to order another party sat down behind us, they looked at their menus and promptly ordered... not sure where our waiter was. When our waiter arrived we ordered for the kids first, they didn't have Mac & Cheese so we found something else on the menu. When we asked for a Veggie burger they told us they were sold out. Disappointing but we asked what else they had for a vegetarian and were quickly told that they have nothing or we could check out the lo-carb section of the menu. Odd that they have nothing for a vegetarian so I asked again... you're a diner and you don't have anything for a vegetarian? Can you check in the back? The waiter then decided to share that he had been working there for 35 years and they have nothing else for vegetarians. Surprising since they have salad and French fries on the menu. Another waiter came over and asked our waiter (in Spanish) if he needed help but he said no. I don't know why it was so hard for our waiter to just ask in the kitchen, who know maybe the cook could have thrown something together for us, it is a diner right? They do have hundreds of items on the menu, maybe the cook could have worked some magic. We decided to leave, but not because we couldn't find something on the menu for a vegetarian but because the waiter just was not helpful at all. While there is a little bit of everything on a huge menu it just consistently falls short. I don't expect Michelin star food at a dinner but the quality just isn't there. Simple items like buffalo wings are served cold (freezer bought pre-cooked wings no less) to the burning of hamburgers, and mushy fries. Been there maybe 3 times. We're a glutton for punishment as we've never had a good experience. Though food is average diner fair but sub-par compared to some of the better diners in the area. We've had staff forget about us...our waitress actually left once since I guess her shift was over...we saw her go to her car through the window. She must have then remembered because she then raced back in to collect our check and her tip....after I went to the register to ask them to have someone bring the check. Tiramisu (yes stupid to order in a diner, but we wanted to give it a shot as we were in the mood) turned out to be ice cream in a big glass. We had a waitress argue with us when we advised one of the dishes was wrong. I mean we were pretty sure we ordered a hamburger and not a cheeseburger? We're done with the place, but it's always packed, so they must be doing something right....maybe we've just got bad timing. Try it and the try the Suburban in Paramus, I think you'll like the food and service much better at the Suburban. read more

Nothing to write home about with the food. There are so many other diners in the area with much better quality of food, even when it's simple (sandwiches, soup, eggs, etc). There's no dish here that I can't get elsewhere (and done much better). But the real problem here is the service. Servers will ignore you, forget to refill glasses, leave dirty dishes piled up on the table and only come back to give you the check ... it's really bad. I don't blame the servers themselves for this, because the problem is so widespread among staff that management is clearly failing to train their people. It's sad. If you want a great diner experience, try the Suburban Diner in Paramus or the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst. Hell, go to Giovanna's Cafe in Ramsey (technically not a diner, but the food is outstanding variations of the dishes you'd find at Matthews). Matthews itself isn't worth it. Life's too short to eat bad food and put up with bad service. I decided not to go back after one bad experience but found myself getting dragged there multiple times for business lunches. Oh well, maybe they improved this time? No. Every time is awful and I leave angry. Now I just tell people I refuse to go and will literally eat anywhere else in Bergen County that they pick. read more

I am utterly disgusted at the service that me and my friends received here at Matthews tonight. The waitress was rude and yelled at us for sitting at a table that had not been cleared yet but that was the only seat available. And we have been sitting here for 40 minutes and the waitress seems to be intentionally skipping our table. We are all hungry but it doesn't seem we will be served for awhile. I do not. I repeat do not recommend this diner because of their ill mannered staff. Not all of them are disrespectful but the ones I experienced tonight were. Great place. It does get a little crowded here on a Friday night, but it is worth the wait. The turnover of tables is usually very quick, and they have a vestibule out front for waiting with benches. No matter what time of the day, you have to get their corn beef hash. I have never been let down by it, and always has that crust built up on the outside of it. They have a liquor license which is nice and they recently started delivering locally. Give this place a try. read more

Very disappointed...long long Friday night wait...cold waiting area! Prices a bit high for a diner...when the meals came out...not very good. Forget about their "wraps" yuck. Tried to order a 'freshly made pannini'...wasn't possible, they are frozen, thawed out, and served with no choice of insides...for example, if you are allergic to mayo, you actually can't get one without mayo, or substitute 'honey mustard', nope. Sweet potato fries had a funny aftertaste, something was wrong...regular french fries did not look appealing. Soup came out with 'ONE' cracker. No napkins for you, unless you find someone to get you some. Finally, when paying the bill I was looking for usual mints or candy to get rid of the taste. Nope, no mints offered.
