Been to Matthews many times. Good place for a quick meal. I didn't experience anything I can rave about. It's good for a quick breakfast and coffee. Afterall it's a classic Jersey diner. Staff is friendly, prices are ok for the times we are living in. It's convenient for the neighborhood. I wouldn't travel a great distance to try it but it's a good stop to satisfy your hunger if you are passing by. This place used to be a staple. Don't know why the quality has dwindled but it has. Started out with the seafood bisque, definitely canned or packaged, not made in house,bland and uneventful. Then it took over 20 min. for our server to come back to even acknowledge us. We then asked for a to-go container and that was another 10-15min (she was polite so I think she was the only waitress in the whole place). Then the entree came, broiled filet of Sole with crabmeat stuffing. DRY & OVERCOOKED. I couldn't cut it with a knife. My sides were mashed potato and corn. The corn (although definitely canned) was the best part of the meal. Potatoes were instant! Yuck. I'm really shocked by all this cause they used to be a great place to dine. Wow this is a gorgeous spot for a diner! Not only is the inside a clean, beautiful interior but they have ample space to seat many and we got in right away on Saturday morning. Wait staff is absolutely exceptional, friendly, and attentive. For food we had a breakfast spread - pancakes, fries, gravy, eggs, hash. Everything came out looking and tasting fantastic. Another meal at another New Jersey Dinner. Seems every New Jersey Dinner has gone through a renovation and modernization recently. The place is clean and not too crowded. The menu wasn't as extensive as in other dinners but that is a good thing. Easy to browse easy to make up one's mind. I had the Lasagna, after a long day on the road with only a Wawa breakfast sandwich in the tank. I was ready for a good solid meal. The lasagna portion is more than generous easily a two meal out of it. It's cheesy with just the right amount of sauce so you're are not swimming in marinara fishing for meat. What happened with this diner?! It used to be amazing. Maybe I caught them on an off day. Went recently for lunch with my kid. Ordered the large chili, soup and quesadilla. First off, the service was horrible. The waiter kept forgetting about us. Barely saw him the entire time. The chili came and I'm not exaggerating, half of the bowl was grease/oil. I picked up some meat and it was dripping from the grease. I attempted to separate it on the plate in the picture shown but it was inedible. I sent that back. Then the quesadilla comes and it's also extremely greasy. Plate in the picture shows the oil on the plate. It was awful. Paid the check and left. read more

We went to Matthew's diner for Breakfast early on a Sunday. Luckily, although it seemed busy, we were seated right away. Our server was quick and we got our food within 15 minutes of sitting down. I ordered the Nova eggs Benedict and my husband ordered an omelette. My husband liked their hollandaise sauce, and I appreciated the the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Coming here for about 40 years. I always ordered just classic diner food like breakfast or lunch typical meals like eggs and sausage or a wrap, sandwiches and soup. All were fairly decent at a reasonable price. Service was always friendly. This Easter Sunday I dropped by after church as we usually do. I figured it was Easter so I decided to order a Sunday type main meal instead of a simply bacon, eggs, waffle brunch. I ordered the London broil with vegetables. It was far from any London broil that I ever had. It was thrown on a plate high and dry with what was five grizzly very tough strips of some kind of steak, almost like a beef jerky. . The strips just sat there looking lonely on a big white plate. No gravy, sauce, nothing. I would have to say that those odd grizzly strips were the toughest pieces of meat I ever chewed. A baked potato wasn't bad if you put enough butter and sour cream on it. I think it's hard to screw up a baked potato. A small dish of string beans was included. I would have preferred just regular string beans, but these were cooked in some strange tomato based sauce that was hard to get down. It would have been nice to know ahead of time that they were trying to get creative with simple string beans in a strange sauce. Now I remember why I hesitated to venture into the main dinner entrees. I'll go back, but I'll stick to the regular diner offerings like breakfast and lunch typical meals. read more

The breading was bland but the marinara sauce made up for the bland breading. The hash browns were lacking seasoning. They just tasted like plain potatoes that were put on the grill. I should have asked for them to be well done because I think that would have improved the taste. I've had better and more flavorful hollandaise sauce but there is room for improvement. Green beans had a nice sauce but...beans were so over cooked they were mushy. Pastrami sandwich was good, pastrami was warmed. Burger was okay, not a particularly large patty. This is one of the staple restaurants around where I grew up. My childhood friends and I come here pretty frequently, and we've been coming for years. Matthew's is just a classic suburban diner. Food isn't off the charts, but it's very comforting. The prices here are pretty good- but I think that's just because I'm used to Manhattan prices. I've gotten the Chicken Waffle Benedict a few times now. The egg and hash browns are always cooked well. The waffle doesn't have much flavor, however. The chicken is okay. The waffle and chicken end up getting soggy unless you eat your meal extremely quickly. I usually have to douse everything in syrup so it has some flavor - and I'm not one to normally do that. The service is usually very fast and the workers are nice. You have to pay at the counter, which I would say is very standard with diners. Not much more to say about that. AGAIN- this restaurant is a classic. I will always end up coming back here no matter how average the food is. read more

Been here many times for burgers and fries. I don't usually order steak in a diner but tonight I did and it was delicious. I think it was 14oz (IE: plenty!) and it came with soup (Chicken) and mashed potatoes & gravy ... and corn. It was the NY Sirloin special. Oh, it also came with desert, which was vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Everything was delicious and I left stuffed! I didn't even touch the onion rings as I didn't have any room for them.
