Ever hear of a chicken with absolutely no wing? Matthews Diner actually served one on a take-out order the other night, along with a chicken (as part of its "Baked Half-Chicken" entree) that was so dried out, charred and overcooked, tasteless, and tough to chew that it may well have been cooked on a previous day! Whenever it was cooked and/or reheated, it certainly was not fresh--and should never have been served to any customer...let alone, in our case, to an elderly woman who can no longer get to the restaurant due to mobility issues, but was so looking forward to a quality meal! Instead, she was given garbage from Matthews Diner--literally--that obviously could not be eaten. As for the missing wing, we can only assume that it was so burnt and charred in appearance that the cook, chef or whatever the person in Matthews kitchen can possibly be called decided to hack it off before it could be seen....and then put the remnants of the inedible chicken into the packaging for us to unknowingly purchase! Beyond the defrauding of a wonderful, elderly woman and longtime, now-former customer, does this restaurant have no shame? But the miserable treatment wasn't finished yet, as the reaction from owner/manager "Sam" when reached on the phone was that it was basically our tough luck! According to Sam--who offered no make-good or refund--we had the responsibility to open the packaged, wrapped up dinner tin and check what was in there thoroughly before we bought the meal (really?)--as opposed to trusting the diner to check its own food and have quality standards! Sam then insulted my elderly mother (the senior-aged customer for whom the meal was purchased), and, before hanging up, said "Don't come here again!" We really enjoyed Matthew's Diner! We had a party of 4 on a weekend day for brunch. We put our names down and waited 20 minutes. It was worth the wait. I got the French toast and scrambled eggs. Both were very good! It was definitely packed in there, so sometimes we were waiting on water refills. But the wait was not long for the food. I really liked their coffee. I have been going here with co-workers for over 7 years, and some of those co-workers longer than that. However, the quality has always been hit or miss, but one thing has always been consistent, the burgers. Today, that streak seems to have ended, we ordered three burgers medium cooked with fries for all three of them, and another sandwich with fries. We got three burgers all cooked at different tempatures, mine was completely raw, I mean you could literally see the shape of the frozen pattie, the outside was burnt and the middle was pink and fleshy, it was gross honestly and a waste of money. The fries tasted like the oil was dirty and they were overcooked, perhaps cooked too long in the oil. This is basic stuff, I shouldn't be longing for the burger I make at home when I order a burger out. One of the other burgers was well done, and the third was somewhere in between. Either way, you get an order with three burgers cooked at the same time, they should all hit the griddle at the same temp for the same amount of time, cooked to medium. Having them all over the place means that either someone is new in the kitchen, someone gave the wrong order and they threw two of them on last minute, or something else is wrong. Either way, the show is not being run properly in the kitchen, or outside of the kitchen as one of the orders was missing french fries completely. I won't be going here again anytime soon. Been to Matthews many times. Good place for a quick meal. I didn't experience anything I can rave about. It's good for a quick breakfast and coffee. Afterall it's a classic Jersey diner. Staff is friendly, prices are ok for the times we are living in. It's convenient for the neighborhood. I wouldn't travel a great distance to try it but it's a good stop to satisfy your hunger if you are passing by. This place used to be a staple. Don't know why the quality has dwindled but it has. Started out with the seafood bisque, definitely canned or packaged, not made in house,bland and uneventful. Then it took over 20 min. for our server to come back to even acknowledge us. We then asked for a to-go container and that was another 10-15min (she was polite so I think she was the only waitress in the whole place). Then the entree came, broiled filet of Sole with crabmeat stuffing. DRY & OVERCOOKED. I couldn't cut it with a knife. My sides were mashed potato and corn. The corn (although definitely canned) was the best part of the meal. Potatoes were instant! Yuck. I'm really shocked by all this cause they used to be a great place to dine. Food is consistently good, solid diner fare. Reliable. We were there on a recent busy Sunday and had an outstanding experience with our waiter (I regret I don't have his name). My sister is in early stages of dementia and asked for a rather difficult change to her meal after it had been delivered, The waiter really tried his best to work with the kitchen to meet it. However it didn't satisfy my sister, so she hardly touched the meal. The waiter later offered a box to take it home, which we also encouraged. She was not interested. Wow this is a gorgeous spot for a diner! Not only is the inside a clean, beautiful interior but they have ample space to seat many and we got in right away on Saturday morning. Wait staff is absolutely exceptional, friendly, and attentive. For food we had a breakfast spread - pancakes, fries, gravy, eggs, hash. Everything came out looking and tasting fantastic. The menu wasn't as extensive as in other dinners but that is a good thing. Easy to browse easy to make up one's mind. I had the Lasagna, after a long day on the road with only a Wawa breakfast sandwich in the tank. I was ready for a good solid meal. The lasagna portion is more than generous easily a two meal out of it. It's cheesy with just the right amount of sauce so you're are not swimming in marinara fishing for meat. What happened with this diner?! It used to be amazing. Maybe I caught them on an off day. Went recently for lunch with my kid. Ordered the large chili, soup and quesadilla. First off, the service was horrible. The waiter kept forgetting about us. Barely saw him the entire time. The chili came and I'm not exaggerating, half of the bowl was grease/oil. I picked up some meat and it was dripping from the grease. I attempted to separate it on the plate in the picture shown but it was inedible. I sent that back. We went to Matthew's diner for Breakfast early on a Sunday. Luckily, although it seemed busy, we were seated right away. Our server was quick and we got our food within 15 minutes of sitting down. I ordered the Nova eggs Benedict and my husband ordered an omelette. My husband liked their hollandaise sauce, and I appreciated the the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. My husbands omelette was flavorful and home fries crispy but not overdone. Getting the check was a bit slower as they definitely were completely full by the time we were ready to leave. read more

I'm a fan. For a "diner" it's not a bad spot. Plenty of parking and seating with prices within reason for a diner but prices are reasonable probably because it's not just off a highway. My girlfriend and I were with a group of people and decided to try this place since we were in the area. The food was really good. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer. The breading was bland but the marinara sauce made up for the bland breading. For entrees, we ordered the turkey dinner, shrimp pasta, a few kids meals for the children, and a chipotle turkey burger deluxe. They were all flavorful! Service was great as well. I figured it was Easter so I decided to order a Sunday type main meal instead of a simply bacon, eggs, waffle brunch. I ordered the London broil with vegetables. It was far from any London broil that I ever had. It was thrown on a plate high and dry with what was five grizzly very tough strips of some kind of steak, almost like a beef jerky. . The strips just sat there looking lonely on a big white plate. No gravy, sauce, nothing. I would have to say that those odd grizzly strips were the toughest pieces of meat I ever chewed. A baked potato wasn't bad if you put enough butter and sour cream on it. I think it's hard to screw up a baked potato. A small dish of string beans was included. I would have preferred just regular string beans, but these were cooked in some strange tomato based sauce that was hard to get down. It would have been nice to know ahead of time that they were trying to get creative with simple string beans in a strange sauce. Now I remember why I hesitated to venture into the main dinner entrees. I'll go back, but I'll stick to the regular diner offerings like breakfast and lunch typical meals. read more

3.5 stars! I used to come to this diner all the time as a kid! It was really good back in the day. I ordered the nova eggs Benedict which had lox and it came with hash browns. The hash browns were lacking seasoning. They just tasted like plain potatoes that were put on the grill. I should have asked for them to be well done because I think that would have improved the taste. I've had better and more flavorful hollandaise sauce but there is room for improvement. Been here many times for burgers and fries. I don't usually order steak in a diner but tonight I did and it was delicious. I think it was 14oz (IE: plenty!) and it came with soup (Chicken) and mashed potatoes & gravy ... and corn. It was the NY Sirloin special. Oh, it also came with desert, which was vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Everything was delicious and I left stuffed! I didn't even touch the onion rings as I didn't have any room for them.
