Great pizzas and the mini-burgers are outstanding (but pass on the brunch - try any of the other great breakfast offerings on 8th Street).

Today was my first trip to Matchbox. I went for the brunch which was great. They offer a full menu and a special brunch menu. I ordered off the brunch menu. So many great choices: stuffed french toast, banana bread french toast, oatmeal with great toppings, veggie frittata, etc. I had the banana bread french toast. Thick slices of banana bread, battered and cooked on the griddle and topped with raspberries and syrup. Yum! So good, but very rich and filling. I could only eat two slices of bread and I was hungry when we got there. The meals are about $10 to $15 but the serving of french toast (4 slices) was generous and will make two meals. I highly recommend the brunch!! read more

Decent food but nothing spectacular. I liked the ambiance and would like to try dinner here sometime. The weekend lunch wait was brutal on an empty stomach and I definitely would avoid that if possible. An easy walk from Eastern Market if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Wonderful pizza! The pepperonis are the smaller crispy slices that are that right amount of crunchy and greasy. We also got the veggie pizza with tomato sauce (be sure to ask for it this way the tomato sauce is really good!), this pie has a nice kick to it thanks to the poblano chile peppers. It is topped with potato "chips", which seemed really weird to me but was actually delicious. Service was exceptional and couldn't ask for more :) read more

I forgot what they ordered, but this is about me, right? Anyway, I ordered the Prosciutto with Black Mission Fig pizza. I was so excited to try something new and exotic, that I ordered it without hesitation. It was amaaaaaaaaaaaazing! The slight saltiness of the prosciutto paired with the earthy, dark sweetness of the figs complimented the savory roasted garlic with the gentle, subtle smokiness of the black pepper honey and cheese--which, were paired perfectly. I thought I would save some for later, but I finished the plate clean. I ordered this pizza with their top moscato wine, which had notes of fragrant peaches, making for a decadent dining experience. Our server was the awesome young lady from Mexico--don't remember her name, but she had such a bright smile and helped us so much, was patient, kind, and so happy to see us. My favorite server so far! If you want something other than a salty, traditional meat pizza, try this! It's sweet and savory, but subtle--extremely unique, but not odd. Great get together spot for a group or date night. You'll love the ambiance, I've been during the day but prefer the night scene here. The food is yummy!! I've had the pepperoni pizza, crab cake sandwich and the matchbox chicken sandwich and you can't go wrong with any of these. They also have upper level seating so take your pick. read more

Thanks to all of you Yelpers out there, I finally tried Matchbox Capitol Hill and was not disappointed. Excellent service (thanks, Nate and Yuri), very good food (duck salad, veggie pizza, duck mousse/pate). All dishes were delicious. We also tried two martinis: heads up that the frilly ones are very sweet (pomegranate and lemon). Again, cannot speak highly enough of the service: attentive. well informed and good-humored. Stop changing your recipes and then I will give you 5 stars! I ordered an ahi tuna dish last year and it was so yumilicious I had dreams about it! but then I went back to order my dream food, and it changed! I couldn't even eat it because the ahi tuna was drowning in dairy! And I don't eat dairy! This wasn't even apparent in the menu that there was an addition of cream to the entree. I had to send it back! I think this restaurant has a menu for allergy people like me, but please make it more apparent when you are adding potential allergens to your menus. I love you, Matchbox-- I especially love the ambiance and energy of this joint, so I will not betray you by giving you less stars. For my friend Don, Matchbox is like Cheers, where everybody knows your name, or his name at least. I've always had amazing service eating there with him, so I might be a little biased, but I think this place is the best restaurant on Barracks Row. And most days, it's my favorite in the city. The space is fascinating - open, gritty and industrial, but still warm and intimate. The service is right on - attentive and professional, but not pretentious. And the food is delicious - savory and satisfying, but not too heavy. We had the scallop entree for the first time a few Fridays ago and were more than impressed with the size and tastiness. It comes on a long plate with the gigantic scallops sitting, grilled golden, atop a fried green tomato and chopped veggies. I adore so much of their menu, but my favorites are the crab soup, pear salad, pepperoni pizza and Bell's two-hearted ale. read more

The food, service and ambiance was fantastic. I came here with my family who usually dont like anythinng but Chilis or Islands. The all loved it from the pizzas to the. Braised short ribs to the chicken. EVERYONE loved it. The Brussels sprouts with gorgonzola and bacon were fantastic. Would go again in a heartbeat. read more

It took me a few times to warm up to Matchbox in Eastern Market, but now I'm definitely a fan. Matchbox is a great place to meet up with friends or family for brunch and dinner. It's also a good place to bring kids, as well as people visiting out of town. (Not New Yorkers, maybe, but those relatives from Minnesota? This is the place to bring them.) For brunch, showing up before 11 is recommended unless you don't mind waiting at least 20 minutes; for dinner, a 20-30 minute wait is to be expected on weekends, and a 10 minute wait on weeknights. But as for the food: - The pizza here is excellent, no questions there. Their Fire & Smoke pizza (fire roasted red peppers, spanish onions, chipotle peppers, gouda... and more) is pretty outstanding, as is the veggie. I've been told their meat pizzas are very good, but seeing how I haven't actually had them... - The other entrees are very good, especially for the price. - The brunch is really solid. You end up getting a lot of food, and it's usually very rich. The frittata is good, the french toast is very rich, the huevos rancheros are excellent, and the crabcake benedict is also very good. I've had really good experiences with the service here as well. My main note is that the waits can be long, so plan for it. However, they use the same system as some major chains for dealing with it (Panera, for instance): you get a buzzer, and when your buzzer lights up, you have a table! As a result, having to wait here a while is not stressful, because you don't have to check with the host(ess) to see if they've forgotten you exist, or give them your number and never get a call... read more

The restaurant was good the food is good however the manager is a jerk!!! Went here for a friends going away party and ordered a round of drinks. Our waitress spills 3 drinks on my buddy. The socially awkward manager didn't want to comp us anything. His first attempt was to give my buddy a dry cleaning voucher that turned out to be good for 1 shirt!! 3 full drinks my buddy was soaked. Then he didn't want to comp the meal and made us ask. He eventually says he will comp his meal and drinks. He failed at doing that!!! Manager was a complete douche!! If you get a wm manager with a over sized shirt be warned. Also service is slow up stairs because everything comes from down stairs. read more

$38 for a pizza and salad? Bought a large pizza and a salad tonight. Pizza was very light on the cheese and sauce and overall pretty bland. Toppings were adequate though. The salad was mostly lettuce with only paper thin slices of pear and apple and just a hint of cheese and walnuts. Very disappointing. I paid $38 for the privilege. I doubt I'll be back. read more

I love the pizza & sliders. Great atmosphere for drinks or watching a sporting event. My only complaint is they don't have wireless. My verizon card doesn't even work in there. So much for grabbing a quick bit to eat, & getting some work done:-). Other that than, it's a great place to dine. read more

While visiting Washington DC, we went here for dinner since we had previously been to the Florida location. It was just as good. The white pizza was yummy. The wedge salad was fresh and the dressing light. The chicken sandwich was jucy and flavorful and don't forget the onion straws! Our server Jeffrey was wonderful. Yes, Matchbox has great food, great service -- but even better is the Matchbox wine list. How many other restaurants in DC only mark up their wine by a few dollars?!? Case in point - we had the Ferrari Carano the other night - a fab Cab - which Matchbox sells for 38. Found the same bottle at Whole Foods for 32. There are other bottles that are more marked up than that. But not by much. I just love that they don't gouge you on the wine. And that's why we return time and time again. read more

Okay, so this is the umpteenth time I've been to Matchbox.......it's consistently good, close to my domicile, across from my other favorite spot, Belga Cafe, and.....as usual, I know the bartenders and a couple of the managers. The restaurant is very well designed, for those of you who remembered Marty's, Matchbox took over this place, added a mezzanine floor to add more seating space. A very attractive and large bar against an open brick wall resides to the right upon entering. 3 large flat screen TVs adorn the tops of the bar and if you look up there's a large sunroof. Just beyond the bar, the brick-oven and pizza preparation area is visible. The dining room is to the left with mostly booth seating and table seating closer to the front. The mezzanine seating upstairs are also booth and tables. It is well designed, modern yet cozy. There are outside seating available as well. Matchbox started out in Chinatown and very well known for their brick oven pizza's. They produce their own pizza dough and produce great thin crust pizza. I am not a pizza person, but I won't refuse 2 Amy's Pizza, Pizzeria Paradiso and Matchbox's. There are other signature items they're known for: 3 6 9 burgers; essentially mini burgers/sliders to share, served with crispy seasoned fried onions. Mini Trio; 2 seared scallops, 2 mini crabcakes and 2 mini burgers without the buns.....properly and very well prepared. They do have great salad selections as well: Pear and apple salad; toasted thinly sliced pear on top of baby greens, slices of granny smith apples, candied nuts and feta cheese. Roasted beet salad or the crispy calamari salad......the latter I would've preferred grilled calamari instead of fried rings, but still a formidable salad, as an entree or to share. The Main course items seem an afterthought since most diners come for the pizza or the burger. Oh, I forgot to mention the Bistro Burger......... matchbox probably pioneered serving burgers with a brioche bun, but I could be wrong. It is probably the best burger I've had.......anywhere. I'm not one of those people who would seek a burger, but this is good burger. The beef patty is homemade, not some pre-formed ground beef, and I'm pretty sure they use quality ground beef. Topped with sauteed mushrooms, blue cheese on a brioche bun.......Belgian style fries or onion rings......this is an awesome burger. Like I said the main course selections seem to be an afterthought, but they are quite good. I've had the New York Strip steak, nothing spectacular, but very well prepared, grilled and properly seasoned. The braised beef short rib, however, is excellent.......coming off the bone type preparation and braised in....my guess is.....red wine, garlic, thyme, onions and perhaps carrots, since I can taste some sweetness to it. Served on a bed of mashed potatoes and a very tasty sauteed chopped brussels sprouts and bacon.......perfect blend. It is also perfectly portioned, not too big, not to small, just right. Next visit, I will try their cast iron chicken. They also have a great imported beer selection, a decent wine list AND reasonably priced. A couple of great premium irish Whiskeys such as Tyrconell, Redbreast; Premium Nicaraguan rum Ron Zacapa and other premium liquor. Matchbox hit the perfect formula for the capitol hill neighborhood and doing very well. I'm going back soon! read more

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Today I went here to get a pizza to go. The menu lists "14/22" next to each pizza. I went up to the hostess and ordered the "14 dollar one". She giggled continually and I almost asked what was so funny since she looked at me oddly. So I get the pizza: $24.20! The hostess was too busy giggling to pay attention and she placed the order as 14 inches, which cost $22. I ordered the $14 one, whatever size that is. For such a fancy, pricey place, I really expect not having to worry about my order being screwed up. I can go to McDonald's if I want to double-check my meal for errors. I expected better from Matchbox but I guess I was wrong. Maybe they should label their menu more clearly. Or maybe they should tell their staff to stop goofing around and do their job right. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening for dinner. The restaurant is very spacious and there is lots of seating. First of all: our waitress, Tamara, was great. It was our first time eating at Matchbox and she was very helpful and accommodating. I ordered the salmon and my date ordered the Matchbox pizza. The salmon was fantastic. It was on a bed of spiralized carrots and zucchini which were also fantastic. I also tried a piece of the Matchbox pizza and it was also good. I'm from Chicago, so my pizza standards are set pretty high. That being said, the pizza was still good. I would definitely return to Matchbox again. read more

I went with friends for a special lunch. We had to wait 25 minutes for a table, which seemed a bit long. We ordered slider appetizers, a half veggie/half prosciutto and fig pizza, a turkey brie sandwich, chopped salad with scallops, and the special salad, which included blackened shrimp. While the onion rings were lovely, the sliders themselves were boooooring! Would recommend skipping them. All the other plates were absolutely yummy, and I ended up taking home half of my prosciutto/fig pizza. It was even better for dinner! BTW, I had a ginger snap and that was yummy plus! I came here with a friend from out of town for brunch and it was both of our first time visiting. everything was excellent and our server (Jeff!) was great. We had banana bread french toast, spanish potatoes, cast iron cinnamon rolls, fruit - everything was amazing and satisfying! It was pretty full when we got there (about 10:40) and there was music! When I've got family in town, and there's a wide range of ages or dietary restrictions/preferences, I'm always thankful that Matchbox is down the street. It's causal, but not cheesy, and the menu has a wide range of options that never fail to satisfy everyone. It's rare that a restaurant that aces the pizza and burger fare that my brothers lived on for years can also appeal to my mom and dad, who enjoy seafood when they visit. It's also the rare place that I can meet a friend for a happy hour after work with my baby and not feel like an over-dressed snobby-mama or the lame-o who brings a baby to the bar. Which is good, because I love their martinis. Seriously, I don't know why, but their dirty martini is my favorite in DC. read more
