I'm super disappointed with my most recent visit. A friend and I came here when they first opened and we both loved the food. We came back here recently and the food was different - lack of flavor and smaller portions. We ordered the wontons in chili oil, the garlic chicken fried noodles, and the chongqing spicy noodle soup. None of the dishes had any bold flavors like last time. Mostly bland. The garlic chicken fried noodles were extremely sweet! Considering it to be one of their most popular dishes, this was my absolute least favorite. When I asked for a spicy sauce (Sriracha or even some pepper to add heat), the waitress just pointed at the chili oil on the table and said that was spicy - it was not. I'm giving this 2 stars because our waitress was very attentive and service was quick! Other than that, I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. read more

I really wanted to like this place and gave it three tries but it just wasn't for me. I tried Garlic Chicken Fried Noodles, Shanxi Shaved Noodle Soup, Spicy Chili Wonton, Chongqing Spicy Noodle Soup, and the scallion pancakes. The only thing I really enjoyed were the scallion pancakes and garlic chicken fried noodles. The noodle soups didn't match my taste preference and I didn't like the texture of the shaved noodles although the thicker noodles in the Chongqing were chewy and good. However, both my husband and I's stomachs didn't feel good after we came home from eating. I think it was too oily or something so I recommend ordering hot tea which is something you always get a restaurants in china to ease down the oiliness. People highly recommended the spicy chili wontons but I didn't think there was enough filling in them and they were not worth the price. Big reason for my posting is that I was not satisfied with the level of service provided. Our server was busy trying to shoo us out. Noodlesymphony... if that's not a real word it should be. Hand-pulled noodles is what drew me into this place. You can watch the young noodle-slinger in full action from their open kitchen. They twirl and separate the dough into discrete strands. It's a memorizing site. I recommend for appetizers the cold black fungus and Sichuan wonton in chili oil. I ordered Chongqing spicy noodle soup. The soup itself wasn't spicy at all, but there's chili oil on the table so fixed that problem easily. The noodles were the star of the dish. My friend's order looked more appetizing than mine. Next time I'd like to try that instead. They ordered the Taiwanese tomato beef brisket noodle soup. This place lives up to all of the reviews written on here. It was so delicious!!! It is so cool when you walk in and you can see the kitchen and cooks in action hand pulling the noodles. We started with dumplings and won tons - both were great! The won tons had a decent kick to them with the chili sauce. Our table had the pork belly, the garlic chicken noodles, and the spicy soup - we all agreed it was very good and so fresh. The garlic spicy chicken was my dish and it was not too high level of spice, it was just right. If you wanted to add more spice they have chili sauce on the table, if you need to take it down there is vinegar and soy sauce as well! We very much enjoyed our meal and will be back. Yes!!! Finally!! A noodle place that hand pulls their noodles! This is so nostalgic for me as growing up I've eaten freshly made Taiwanese noodles. Surprise surprise, I ordered the Taiwanese style noodles when I was here with a friend. It didn't look like a big bowl of food, but it was perfectly portioned - I was full, but not stuffed! The food came out so quickly, which was much appreciated. The waitstaff was very hospitable. AND there's a private parking lot out back! Huge, huge plus. We made a reservation for a table of eight to celebrate a birthday dinner at Magic Noodle tonight and they could not have been a better choice! This restaurant was well prepared, extremely fast with service, and the food was really, really delicious. The prices were reasonable and we were all impressed with our experience! We tried the Pork Belly with noodles and enjoyed the soft yolk egg on top. It had a generous portion of pork belly and the pork belly itself was really good. The Chicken Curry with noodles were overall a good dish but didn't care as much for those noddles. The Garlic Chicken Fried Noodles was spicier than expected but very good. The fan favorites hands down were the cucumber appetizer (what the heck is in that SAUCE?!) ands the Fried Noodles with String Beans and Pork Belly because of the nice balance. Whenever there's a lot of hype about food, I get excited and also worried that the food won't live up to the hype. My experience here definitely lived up to the hype. The interior decor and ambiance are nice and modern. There's a window where you can stand and watch the magic happen as the noodles are being pulled by hand. Stopped in around 4:30pm on a Saturday with a friend, and we were able to park in the lot behind the building. There is some street parking (not on University, but side streets that turn off of University). We were seated promptly as it was not too busy. Wontons in chili oil- 4/5. Sooo tasty! The portion size felt small though. Chongqing spicy noodle soup- 5/5. This was delicious as well, and the heat is definitely there. Lanzhou noodle soup- 5/5. This was a refreshing, light broth but still flavorful with the beef. We asked for smaller bowls, so we could try each other's noodles, and I really loved how the Chongqing and Lanzou noodles complimented each other. The portions for the noodle soups were generous, but they were so good that we were able to finish all of it! Update: After servals months since the last adventure with magic noodle. Everything from my first review has improved. They switched the metal cups to glassware instead, the flavor of the broth is stronger and compliments the noodles well. I still like the ShanXi noodle broth best but requested the regular noodles instead as they were definitely more QQ then the shaved noodles! I Was very excited to try this restaurant after reading all the reviews. Sorry to say I was a bit disappointed. We had the scallion pancake to start. They were without any distinguishing flavor, except grease. We also had the fried dumplings, which were fine, but not great. For our main, We ordered the Dan Dan noodles which were overcooked to the point of being soft, and over sauced. We also had the garlic shrimp with fried noodle. The shrimp was good, but there were hardly any to be found and the noodles were way over done, to the point there was not any chew in them. We were spell bound by the Shanxi Shaved Noodle Soup with beef brisket, tomato, cilantro, pickled mustard and scallions, and the Garlic Chicken Fried Noodles with shredded chicken, onion and bell pepper. The broth in the soup was delicious and perfect for a cold day. The cilantro and scallions added so much flavor. The fried noodles had enough kick to make me sweat. I've read articles about Magic Noodle. I was finally able to try it for myself and wow, the food is amazing. We had steamed gyoza and fried egg roles for appetizers. The gyoza were delicious! There was even a little bit of the dumpling juice inside, so if you ate the entire gyoza in one bite, you're just hit with that extra juice that makes the dumpling melt in your mouth. The fried egg roles had a great amount of filling. My favorite part about these is that they weren't greasy. But the best was yet to come. These garlic chicken fried noodles are absolutely delicious. There is a generous amount of noodles, chicken and bell peppers. This item can easily be shared between two people, unless you want leftovers. Love this spot! I got takeout from here by chance after picking up a bubble tea from their neighbor store front Ding Tea. I'd seen some mpls foodies post about some of their more popular dishes so I was eager to try some of their items. These noodles are indeed magical, especially since they are of the authentic Chinese hand-pulled variety. I love that right when you walk into Magic Noodle (after parking in a lot, yay), the first thing you see is some skilled nood' slanging. It's awesome to witness and film the magic happen, and bless the patient nood-ologists that allow me to stare almost creepily at every noodle they pull. Anywho, when seated, you are given a menu that you can check off what you want, and the server will verify. The whole process was pretty efficient! We got: Cold cucumber, scallion cake, braised egg and pork belly, Sichuan wonton in chili oil, Chongqing spicy noodles, garlic chicken fried noodles, and tomato egg noodles. Each item came out fresh and quickly enough from the kitchen. Every dish that was noodle-based was delicious! I loved the perfect chewy consistency and cook... such a difference from packaged noodles! Some of my personal faves where the braised egg and pork (sweet, savory, and hearty), the chongqqing spicy noodles (though they could have used a tad more seasoning and spice), and the tomato egg noodles. I've never had anything like the tomato egg noodles before, and I loved how the slightly sweet tomato sauce complemented the hearty scrambled egg. Wow. I was impressed with this place. As a person who has made fresh pasta many times, I was unaware of this "hand-pulled" noodle technique. Youtube it, it's very cool! If you don't look it up beforehand you can witness them stretching the pasta by hand through the big glass window. The result? Delicious and VERY long noodles. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente (semi-firm, not soggy), and the broths were smooth and a delightful complement. My only complaint, the proteins could have been better. Magic Noodle offers fresh, hand-pulled noodles in St. Paul. Location is great, and there is a parking lot in the back. Decor is super cute and there is a panda chef in the doorway. Lots of natural lighting in the restaurants and tables and booths spread about. There's a little window in the back where you can also watch the noodles being made. My overall experience: tasty noodles, meh soup. I got the Shanxi shaved noodles and it was alright overall. I loved the noodles since they were indeed freshly made so they were very chewy and delicious. However the quality of the noodles cannot hide the fact the broth for the soup was very weak. I would expect for a beef soup there be a savory beef flavor or more depth to the broth, however this soup had a very shallow vegetable taste. It was honestly pretty bland tasting and unfortunately that was enough to cancel out the great noodles. The beef in the soup was soft too, it even this wasn't the most flavorful. The two appetizers we ordered really set my expectations to be more: the Sichuan spicy dumplings were very well flavored and the cucumbers were also very well done too, so it's a bummer the soup didn't deliver too. read more

I've been extremely excited about this place especially since it's right down the street from me! First off it's obviously new but it's very clean and modern. The design is super cute I love the green chairs and near the entrance there's these cute little stools low to the ground! We just ordered the beef steamed dumplings but they were great! I, like many young Asians in town have been waiting and hoping for more Asian restaurants that don't cater to the typical Minnesota palette. So needless to say that when Magic Noodle popped into my line of sight, I was very excited, especially in the food that was to be offered. I decided to give them a couple of weeks to work out their service and menu after opening to go, and it was disappointing. As everyone has noted so far, the decorations and atmosphere is really nice, especially the open kitchen and window to see your noodles being pulled. However, the food lacks in so many areas that scenery could not make up for it. To start we ordered the Spicy Beef Shanks, cold cucumber, Sichuan Wonton in chili oil, and the Scallion pancake. All of these items were extremely under seasoned. The Sichuan wontons lack the Sichuan of its namesake. No pungent chili and peppercorn aromas! The wontons were watery and the oil had no flavor. No amount of pouring the flavorless side condiment of chili oil helped. The beef shanks were a let down too. The shanks were shaved thin and mixed with what I assume was taro or some kind of root vegetables to fill in the plate. Once again, poor seasoning and not worth the price tag. The Scallion pancake was good with a side of a sweet / sour dipping sauce, but the cold cucumber was just like the rest, bland! For our mains, we had the Chongqing Spicy Noodles, the garlic fried noodles, and the Lanzhou noodles. All very disappointing. The Chongqing noodles tasted like a cheap Shin noodle cup. Not even spicy for Minnesota standards. The fried noodles was overly bland even soaked in that tasted chili oil. I really hope this place will get better in the future, because it has great promise. Minnesota's Asian food scene is getting better every day, but there will be bumps and failure along the way.
