They have nice decor and painting on walls that represent the culture. Second they have a small menu and I am sure that's the reason they maintain the standards. And the service is so quick and fast. Yum! So glad we stumbled upon this place! Very reasonably priced and a nice experience! Food was amazing. We started with short ribs, garlic edamame, and pork dumplings as apps. All were so good but we wished we'd gotten extra dumplings - they were amazing!! I ordered the garlic chicken fried noodles for my meal. It states it's spicy. Maybe my expectations were too high, I don't know, but I wasn't overly impressed. The service was just ok. The food was good, but not great. I certainly was looking for more spice and I didn't get it. Everything I ordered was supposed to be spicy and I didn't find it to be spicy at all. For reference, I would order a spice level 3 at a Thai restaurant. The wontons tasted good and I would recommend them to anyone, even if you don't like spicy food. The cold cucumbers were AMAZING! I love noodles. I really love hand pulled noodles! I've been wanting to try Master Noodle for so long, they changed their name from their original Magic Noodle. Well, Magic or Master, their noodles are delicious. We placed our order online which was simple. Picked up our well packaged order and headed home. We ordered their cheese wontons, chicken fried rice, steamed beef dumplings, sichuan wontons in chili oil, mongolian beef noodles, garlic chicken fried noodles and sichuan dan dan noodles. Their wontons were shaped differently than any other cheese wontons that we have had. They also seemed lighter, even though they probably weren't. Tasty. The chicken fried rice was as expected. Both dumplings were very good. Having homemade noodles makes all the difference. Same is true with the garlic chicken fried noodles and the mongolian beef noodles. Both dishes were good but having homemade noodles takes those dishes to the next level. The dan dan noodles were a little different from other dan dan noodles that I have had before however again, homemade noodles make all the difference. This place is awesome - not aware of any place like it in Minneapolis! They make their own noodles and you can watch them prep the dough as you eat! All our food was excellent. Would recommend the pan fried pork dumplings and the garlic chicken fried noodles in particular. Both comes with their made to order pulled noodles. Yes, before COVID-19 when we went in person, we saw the guy pull our noodles right before he put them in the boiling pot for us. We couldn't believe it. This is easily one of our favorite noodle places in the Twin Cities, and we eat a lot of noodles! I was hoping for some tofu options because everything looked amazing and it would have been nice to try but both of us are vegetarians. The Shan-xi shaved noodle soup is a warming hearty bowl of delicious hand-ripped noodles in a cilantro-y steaming broth. The soup dumplings are perfect. The Szechuan chili wontons are little nuggets of spicy deliciousness. The beef burrito is a light cooling delight. Yum!!!! I had such a good meal here! This is an Asian restaurant with a big emphasis on their dishes that are made from freshly-crafted noodles. Seriously, if you like it when they are cranking out perfect handmade noodles right in front of you then you absolutely must try this place. From where we were sitting we could see through a big window into the kitchen where they were making them. I ordered the Garlic Chicken Noodles, and that dish was FANTASTIC. Really flavorful without being overpoweringly spicy. Those noodles. I LOVE THESE NOODLES. My friends, who had been here many times before, had Shanxi Shaved Noodle Soup which was reported to be as amazing as it looked, and another noodley thing, and we had excellent beef dumplings, and it was just all so great. I've been here a couple of times (both with coworkers for lunch and with family for dinner). It is a fun experience to see the noodles made in house through the glass window. But overview food wise, this place was meh for me. I love the idea of fresh hand pulled noodles but I actually would prefer to build my own noodle bowl instead of the ones on the menu. It would be cool to choose the type of noodles I want, veggies, protein and stock. I've had several of the soups and although it was definitely hearty, it still lacked flavors in my opinion. For example, the shanxi noodle soup was beefy but not really anything else, I couldn't taste the spices and I ended up using alot of soy sauce and chili oil to add some more flavor. My main criticism is that the soup was just lukewarm- Idk about you, but when I eat soup- especially any Asian noodle soups, I want it hot, preferably almost burning hot. I think this is important when the noodles are freshly made too since freshly made noodles are usually more chewy. Both times, I went I had to ask the waiters to heat it up or add more hot liquid. Both times, I knew my waiter was confused and annoyed. That being said, service is medicore- somewhat friendly but nothing special. Also both times I went, everyone's food came out at different times (maybe 5-20 minutes from each other)- which is not a huge problem but I generally like it when everyone's food comes out together so we could enjoy it all at once. If I'd checked here first, I wouldn't have been so appalled that my order took three times as long to get here as was forecasted. I tried pretty much all the noodle dishes they offer here. My favorite one is the knife cut beef noodle soup, the noodle texture is one of the best I've had at a noodle restaurant like this. They make all the noodles by scratch, not sure about the soup though, that could use some work on that. Wow. This is a pretty legit noodle house. We visited for dinner one night and found the fairly large restaurant to be full with a few parties waiting. We were greeted, given a buzzer and seated fairly promptly. Our waitress was so cute - very prompt and also very busy. She answered all of our questions and tapped our order into her ipad. We ordered big (we can't help ourselves). Even though the menu seems like it's kinda small, there are so many good things to eat that it's really not a problem. So we got the dumpling chili oil appetizer, which was pretty bomb. The wrappers are homemade, light and delicate, with a good filling and a lovely chili sauce that was just the Minnesota spicy right amount of spicy. We got the beef burrito, which was like a Chinese version of a beef burrito with a super crunchy outer layer that reminded me of a thin crispy scallion pancake. Really good, especially when dipped with the leftover chili oil from the dumplings. I got the Moo Shu Fried Noodles, which were a generous portion of lovely hand pulled egg noodles cooked perfectly with some finely sliced veggies and the amazing black fungus. The sauce was flavorful and a touch sweet. My only wish was that the sauce was a little bit thicker. A good tablespoon of corn starch would have helped. But that's maybe just me. It was absolutely delicious. My husband got the Lanzhou Noodle Soup, which had a different wider type of noodle in a beautiful broth. My husband is trying to eat healthy and asked for extra veggies, which was an add on option at the bottom of the menu (along with a lot of other on-demand extras). Also - I know this is weird. Magic Noodle was magical! You need to have fresh noodles at least once in your life! There is no competition to the texture and flavor you get from 'real' noodles! When we arrived, we were in awe of how amazing this place was. The decor and kitchen are in view from the entrance and it's entertaining to be able to see the noodles being made. Despite the high ceilings, they did a great job of making sure it wouldn't be overly loud. We were there at 6:30 on a Friday and only waited 10 minutes or less for party of 2. Tons of people taking to go orders as well. The food: Starters- Scallion pancakes (yum! Add some table chili oil for the perfect flavor!) & Braised Egg and pork belly (I don't eat pork, but my hubby was in heaven! He said it was cooked perfectly and wasn't tough or chewy.) Entrees- Garlic Chicken Fried Noodles (nice and just enough jalapeño spice. This was our favorite.) Tomato Egg Noodle Bowl (Probably one of the most unique dishes we've had. Fried Beef Dumplings 3/5 I personally found the filling to be too salty for my taste and the dipping sauce too light and sweet for the filling, but the dumpling wrapper was excellent. Braised pork and egg 5/5 Great! The pork was very tender and I'm a fan of the sweet soy sauce it was stewed in. Cumin Mutton Handmade pie 5/5 This ended up being my favorite thing here! The Twin Cities does not have a Chinatown which means that my craving for authentic dishes is somewhat limited. So I was incredibly excited to hear that a hand-pulled noodle shop was coming to University Ave in St Paul! Magic Noodle is pretty dang good. I have the good fortune to have parents who cooked hand pulled noodles and other yummy Taiwanese foods for me growing up and the dishes I tried gave me nostalgia in the best way! We started with a "beef burrito" - which is essentially a scallion-type pancake rolled up with beef, scallions and cilantro, plus hoisin sauce. It was delish! Then we got the Taiwanese beef noodle soup (real good but broth could have deeper flavor) and garlic chicken fried noodles (reminiscent of pad Thai). Both were tasty and again reminded me of home! Tip: get extra noodles - you won't regret it! I loved that the workers were speaking Chinese to each other and that you can watch them hand pull the noodles from wherever you are sitting! Super popular already, but tons of parking behind the building despite the area, so yay. Kudos on the clear effort put into designing the space. Tons of cultural elements adding interest on every wall, every surface. Just about every detail had thought put into it, even in the restrooms. Menus double as order sheets. Fun and interactive, though my San Francisco heart decries the excessive paper usage, especially with each diner given their own sheet. Slightly less room for order errors, though still there given the servers enter orders into the system afterwards. Early dinner time, not even 7 pm yet. They're already out of several items, including two now crossed-off on the feature board. My Irishman muses whether they're having a soft opening given they're running out of dishes too quickly. We wanted to start with beef dumplings - also out. We settle for garlic edamame alongside chicken and mushroom noodle soup and moo shu fried noodles to share. Desserts look promising - we'll get to that later. Every aspect is polished and well-presented. Even the tea and water cups, though I expected traditional jasmine brew rather than the out-of-place Lipton teabag adding an American breakfast diner element to an otherwise thoughtfully executed Chinese space. Our noses catch the arrival of the garlic edamame before our eyes do. They did justice to the name of this appetizer for sure. The pods serve up a heavy dose of garlic with each bite, though never once loud, raw, or bitter. It's a lovely contrast to the mild edamame beans inside the pods, with our garlicky fingers serving as proof of how much we enjoy the morsels. The colorful moo shu fried noodles are next, and it looks appetizing, though I'm finding the proportion of food to servingware at this place a bit off, which further highlights not-quite-generous portion sizes. Enough amazing fast-casual places spots serving hearty servings for the money around for this not to stand out. As for the dish itself, too much savory going on. Chinese fare carries deep savory elements such as black bean paste that can be a bit much for me if applied with a heavy hand - I prefer lighter, fresher flavor balances. I've a ton of favorite Chinese restaurants, especially in San Francisco, the largest expat Chinese community in the world, so it's not necessarily a norm for me. The soup finds its way to the table shortly after. Slurp. Good noodles. Nice chew. Clearly fresh, in case you weren't glued to the noodle-making performance from the open kitchen while your were waiting for a table. Sip. Bland. Even for me, someone who appreciates the subtle sweetness of white rice or bread by itself. I douse the bowl in the provided soy sauce. Better, though now it's soy sauce soup. Not what I planned to appreciate when I ordered. Asked if we care for dessert, my eyes spy an unusual offering, and I immediately light up: Black sesame mochi. Rich, nutty black sesame ice cream + mildly sweet and chewy mochi cake. Yes, please. They're out of that, too. Nooo. My Irishman orders us green tea mochi. I know he's not big on grassy matcha notes, so I switch the order for mango mochi, my mochi standard. The server suggests we mix and match. Cool, done! The mochi comes out as a pair as opposed to the four-piece set I'm used to with mochi orders in restaurants. I'm disappointed that the mochi clearly isn't Mikawaya, My/Mo, or some other uber-yum quality brand considering both the effort put into the decor not matched by the quality of offerings and the tradeoff we're getting for the markup we're paying to enjoy this tidbit here. The quality is subpar and it shows. A place fails at mochi when I take bites and instead of just enjoying myself, I'm musing that I should drop in on the local Asian mega-supermarket as I leave the area later - to stock up on quality mochi to not order it out and get disappointed again. I imagine people don't make their visit decision based on mochi desserts even if they did notice the lesser quality for the operators to care all that much. Nice decor. Quick service. The flavor balance on entrées runs too hot on some items, too cold on others. The point of a restaurant is the flavors, so I'm not impressed. Oh well, it looks like they'll do well enough. A random find on a short trip and just... wow. Can't speak for how this would hold up for delivery, but dining in was fast, fresh, and damn delicious. The cucumber salad is the best I've ever had (they understand that making sure it's super cold is key) and the Sichuan dumplings are can't-skip. The cold noodles with chicken were so wonderful, with the perfect level of spice that built slowly and the pork belly and green bean fried noodles were a comforting, savory-sweet foil to the rest of the dishes. read more
