Masraff's is one of those upscale places that you probably drive by often and never think twice about, except for every August when you see their name pop up on HRW's list of participating restaurants and then you think to yourself, "man, that menu is boss." For the past 4 years that I've been enjoying Houston's greatest month, I've had that exact thought and it wasn't until last night that I actually got around to trying it out.
--Ambiance:
Not even going to get into this because it's obviously $$$ so that means the restaurant is fancy and expects you to not come in wearing cut-offs and flip flops. It can be an intimate setting but I think it's better suited for groups wanting to have a nice classy dinner over a couple of wine bottles.
--Food:
My entire party was quite impressed with the choices offered on the HRW menu, so that was a win-win-win because all of us were able to try something different, and I was able to see what was good and what was not.
1. The Traditional Vietnamese Crispy Peking Duck Spring Rolls were hot, crispy, and just the way I wanted them; what sold me on this dish is their sweet chili sauce. With every dip and bite, there was that moment where you would enter food bliss as the flavors danced off every single bud in your mouth. Needless to say, I wiped my plate clean of that sauce. A close second was the Garlic Seared Calamari due to its buttery, juicy, and extremely tender delicacy. I did try the quail and risotto du juor. Both were good in its own way, but nothing was too memorable about either item. Of course, the BF would disagree about the former because he enjoyed his ham wrapped quail immensely.
2. The Duet of Cilantro Laced Hebi (Hawaiian Spearfish) and Dry Scallops was served with a plate full of vegetables that I did not care for whatsoever. Though the plate doesn't look too appetizing or filling, it really is. The scallops were blackened to the point where they are served practically dry, yet there is still that hint of moisture that you can see and taste when you cut into the scallop. The hebi was soft and fatty and quite delicate for being served rare. But the WALU is where it's at. I took a few (huge) bites of my sister's Walu and I instantly wished I ordered what I came there for. I mean, c'mon. Masraff's had me at "walu." The fish was rich, moist, and above all buttery! I honestly can't remember the last time I enjoyed a fish that buttery since Roy's at Pebble Beach two years ago (and that is not exactly an experience to be forgotten). So yes, take it to heart when I say that the walu will not disappoint. Another favorite was the filet mignon, served medium rare. The filet was tender and juicy with all of its goodness oozing out onto the plate. Yum! I did also try the lamb, which did not make the cut on my list of top restaurants for game-y meat, but the blue potato puree was pretty bomb!
3. All you need to know about the desserts is that the mini doughnuts are a MUST TRY. Hot and freshly baked, each little puff balls are thrown in a mix of cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar. Of course, I think it would have been much more magical had they just served it straight with powdered sugar and no cinnamon, but it was dessert heaven nevertheless. Also, you have to try the basil ice cream on the apple turnovers because it is absolutely refreshing and minty!
--Service:
Even though OpenTable had no availability for a party of 8 on a Wednesday night, I decided to give them a call and was easily able to make a reservation with the hostess. Right off the bat, I was able to appreciate their service because it wasn't like I called two weeks in advance. When we arrived, we were seated immediately in the first dining section to your right. Our table was already set up in a corner with the HRW menu already laid out. Our waitress came by shortly and started us off with a bottle of Merlot and a glass of Moscato for me. What I liked about her, besides her fun and bright attitude, was her knowledge in spirits. She was able to pick out what was a good alternative to Rutherford Hill, since Masraff's doesn't carry the brand, and she recommended one of the best moscatos I've had to date. My only regret is that I should have ordered a bottle, but I luckily remember the name of it: Pio Cesare circa 2010. Beyond that, she was patient, helpful, and can actually take a decent group photo. Kudos to her.
--Overall:
Unfortunately for this review, I have to give it all up to Masraff's. They took home 5 stars and a big HELL YEAH! whereas I just took home my fat self with no regrets. The food is phenomenal, the service is awesome, and between complimentary valet and a huge public lot, I'm willing to bet that there's nothing more you can ask for on a quiet Wednesday night or a bustling Friday night.
Congrats, Masraff's, on earning my longest review yet. You deserve it. read more
