Need a solid place to choose for the 2nd week of Houston Restaurant Week? Masraff's makes a solid choice with its delicious, high-quality ingredients, graceful service, and nice presentation. Add that to dressing up a little fancied for a night out with friends, and you've got some fun memories to keep! :D
Our party of 5 got to try several dishes, and every course got a thumbs up. Masraff's offers 3 course meals with complimentary bread with butter. While the crab tower appetizer was refreshing with lump crab with diced avocado (and beautifully presented), the famous seared calamari was a pleasant surprise~ The calamari is not fried-- super savory, slightly alcohol taste, and the texture was similar to Asian fish tofu or fish cake, and the accompanying oyster mushrooms beefed up the dish into a hearty appetizer. Both were quite tasty, but I suggest choosing the calamari just to try!
Main courses: Lamb chops, filet mignon, and seared tuna & scallops. For the first two, we were asked how we would like the meat cooked, and they were cooked perfectly to desired doneness. My meat-loving friend's really enjoyed the lamb chops (best they've had in their lives, and it came with super tasty mashed potatoes) and steak (with solid but not amazing Mac n cheese). They said for the filet mignon dish, while cooked very well, the shining star would be the sauce accompanying the steak.
The scallops were tender but without the usual seared crust, and tuna had a gorgeous red interior and melt-in-your-mouth texture.... *wipes drool* both weren't inherently seasoned heavily, but the sauces on the plate gave the proteins a nice flavor lunch. And the "fried rice" was like a tasty, very moist, and healthy version of your usual Chinese fried rice, savory and yummy! I imagine that for someone who likes crunch or to chew their food a lot, this dish is overall "soft" (everything was super soft and requires minimal chewing) and could be a little off putting perhaps... but I loved it!
For dessert, the chocolate eruption was a petite flourless lava cake in a mini ramekin-- presented piping hot and delicious, so much so that my friend's hubby didn't want to share with her!! :P (it's okay, she got some of mine) and it came with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream perched atop an airy semi-shortbread-like walnut (?) cookie. 5/5 on this dessert! The peach crostata also received a 5 from my friend, as it was pretty large and had a generous helping of peaches on top of a flaky crust. As for the Spiked Milkshake and Oatmeal Cookies... womp womp, that was a surprising (and only) fail for the night. Deceivingly creamy looking, the milkshake was described as pure alcohol without any milky texture whatsoever! My friends took a sip each, tried to stir it up without avail, and abandoned their efforts. The cookies with the shake were standard cookies, but sharing is caring, so they did not go dessertless that night ^o^
The ambiance is fancy, a little dark for my tastes, but there were cushioned benches for parties around our size in addition to the normal chairs. The service was super dee duper-- food came out relatively quickly, silverware was switched out between courses, and the waiters were all very nice! They didn't refill my water glass a few times, but I drink water like a camel, so I can't fault them for that... Parking is no issue; they have valet, but why pay when the entire shopping plaza parking lot is empty? Aside from the milkshake mini fiasco, Masraff's was great.
