    Garlic Naan
    Hallie L.

The most gentrified Indian restaurant ever. The spicy levels were a joke, with the highest spice level dish being nothing more than an indistinguishable tingle in your mouth. The chicken tikka masala was overwhelmingly sweet and felt very one dimensional. The chicken cheezy was also such a let down, no complexity in taste :( Our waitress also took away the plate before we finished the chicken :(( The masala paneer wings were pretty good though. The garlic naan was alright.

Had a nice catered box lunch from here. They have several vegan entree options, and I had the mint tofu curry, which was pretty good. One note- the "vegan square meal" came with naan, which I'm pretty sure is not vegan because it contains dairy and even their own menu only labels as vegetarian, not vegan.

Every dish had me mind blown. The flavors put into each dish were spot on everything we were expecting and more I understand why so many say that Masala Square is a hidden gem for Indian food‼ The chicken tikka masala was my favorite with its creamy, addictive tomato flavor, but the potatoes in the vindaloo were spiced and cooked perfectly as well. We loved the chicken biryani as well Although you can adjust the spice level, I'd say medium was the perfect amount of spicy I could tolerate enjoyably A must try here is the mango lassi, the yogurt flavor within paired perfectly with the mango and its consistency was super enjoyable! I also recommend trying the supreme samosas! I'm glad we upgraded from the regular to supreme because the difference was the chana (chickpea) curry they topped off with that was the most flavorful and had the most refreshing hint of herbs‼ Overall, I am 100% coming back here to try more and I definitely want to taste their variety of stuffed naan next time

Masala Sq does not disappoint! I have brought many people here and everyone has loved it! I always get the chicken tikka masala and chicken soup. Both are wonderful. And the Naan is sooo good, get the garlic one!

Right at bow market this place always has the pakora and chai deal and I finally gave it a try one rainy day. Their menu service was slow but they were also pretty busy due to a festival happening on the street. The food was OK quality for south Asian standards. The chai was cold, it was definitely microwaved or made ahead of time. The pakoras were a little raw on the inside. I also got a chicken appetizer which was nice. Overall they lacked spice and flavour. But definitely are catering to the Somerville population.

Hidden gem! I was not expecting this place to be this good to be honest, we ordered saag paneer, dal, Navratran Korma, Dal Makhani, Paneer pakoras, kheer and garlic nan. They were all delicous, perfectly cooked and flavorful. In particular, we thought kheer was the best one we had in Boston. Only con would be high price but I'll definitely try their other dishes next time. Also, restaurant itself has a cool vibe with open bar concept, I will certainly dine in there next time and try their special drinks! 100% Recommend if you're visiting Union square!

A family owned business right at the heart of Union Square, Masala Square serves up delicious comfort Indian cuisine. Jalfrelzi - This brown curry is thinner than most curries I've had but still packs a lot of spices and heat! Malai Kofta - The dish was creamy and delicious! I loved the cashew curry and it complements the veggie croquette well. Probably one of my favs and will have to get next time! Supreme samosa - A loaded samosa that is very flavorful, creamy, and spicy! Pakora - Stuffed with spinach, onion and cauliflower in a chickpea batter, this is fried to perfection! Garlic Naan - Crispy and so good! Friendly staff and will definitely have to visit again!

Masala has a terrific luncheon buffet 1130 to 3 but get there by 230. Food is good, wait staff is prompt and friendly, prices are good. Service is great,

Do you serve square meals on weekends? Looks like you're only open for dinner?

Hi Victoria! Square meals are available Monday through Friday. We open at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday's. The hours may change in the future!

Do you serve halal meat? If yes, which ones in the menu are halal, please?

Hey Raheema, we serve halal chicken, lamb, and goat! Therefore, everything on the menu is halal.

Do they serve lunch buffet on weekends?

Hey Kapil, we have what we call "square meals" everyday. It replaces the buffet, as you get to choose an appetizer, entree, and side! It is made fresh and to your preference of spice level!

A majority of the drinks were more on the savory side which was very interesting like "may all your bacon burn" with bacon bites at the top of the drink. The drinks my friend had were all stunning with the use of egg yolk to elevate the drink. We ended the evening by walking over to Bow Market and trying Viet Citron which was so DANG GOOD my gosh. The to go orders were insane but looks like they are doing very well despite recently opening in. I got the grilled lemongrass pork ribs bowl and youtiao and the side sauce was so good. It was pretty busy and we were seated at the bar which was a little crowded. Loved the decoration, it was black interior with red lighting and interesting seating arrangement with tables down the middles and plants around. For drinks we got the Saigon Sunset which had a little sour flavor and was my personal favorite, the Gimme with an interesting flavor, and the Old Fashioned which is what you expect (old fashioned are not for me). The bartender was great, he was so patient even with how busy it was making sure to always check up. For food, the Goi Ca/Fluke was so good. It was flavorful and the texture. The peanut butter sauce wasn't too nutty and went so well with the fish. I ate every little piece up. We also ordered the Wagyu Viet Carpaccio which was also good. It was refreshing to eat and came with a large cracker for eat bite.

The eggplant shrimp not so interesting and relatively bland. The main course highlights included the beef short rib and black cod entrees. Both were very well received. So food experience was good overall. The service experience left a lot to be desired. The waitress seemed to be in a rush to get us moved on. No menu explanation or highlights.... nada. She was a little insistent for our whole order at once including drinks. Even though we placed our appetizer order and stated that we would place that a later she was back in 5 minutes (see below about timing) again looking for the main course orders. We waited 15 minutes for our reserved table but that wasn't a big deal. However, the appetizers arrived within 5 minutes of ordering which indicated that they were prepared and ready to go and hence zipped out so fast. I had to request the server to slow things down and he did help that a bit. However, we were done within 50 mins of being seated. So it was not a leisurely meal unfortunately. Perhaps the waitress was overcompensating for the last table going over their allotted 90 mins. I suggest it's worth a visit if you cannot get a reservation for your slot at another restaurant that you want to try. And don't be too surprised that the appetizers come at you before you can say boo! It may set the tempo for the remainder of your visit.

We ordered quickly after perusing the (rather short) menu, most of which was either small plates and cocktails . Our first plate was the hainan chicken arancini. I really liked the contrast in textures between the crispy exterior and the tender chicken and rice mix on the inside. Overall flavour was not bad, too, but I'm not sure that it was exactly good enough to merit the price point of $18. Next was the Xi'an street noodles, which was probably my favourite dish of the meal. The noodles were very well cooked - chewy but not too soft - and I loved the sauce, with the gentle peanut aroma on top of the various spices they used. One comment was that the chilli crisp, which was tasty, was very lacking (in amount) and as a consequence the dish was really not spicy at all. Finally we had the chilli crisp buffalo chicken. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the chicken was boneless (I was expecting something more like chicken wings), which made for very clean eating :) The buffalo sauce was nice (and perhaps a bit spicier than the aforementioned chilli crisp) and the chicken itself was very rich and juicy. Portion size was quite large too and overall I was very happy with this plate. For drinks we ordered the Jaded, which was a fun matcha-themed cocktail (even the marshmallow was matcha-flavoured) and a (spirit-free) cranberry limeade, which was surprisingly refreshing and sweet. Overall a yummy meal, but definitely very expensive. I would be interested to try some more of their cocktails, which seem very creative, but I'm not sure if I would be keen to come again primarily for the food. (To be fair, though, this is often the modus operandi of these restaurants that specialise in small plates and drinks )

It was such a cute hidden area, and I was already excited before we even got to the place. We headed upstairs into the bar, and the vibe was perfect. It's small, cozy, dimly lit, with vibey music playing. Since it was our first time, we were a little confused at first, but the waiter was super kind and walked us through everything. I ordered the Elly the Elephant and my friend got the Laughing Gull, and we both really enjoyed our drinks. One thing I thought was really nice is that they allow you to grab food from the surrounding restaurants and bring it in to eat there. We didn't end up doing that, but we did get the charcuterie board they had. It came with cheeses, crackers, and some fruit, and you can add meats for $10, which we opted out for. I will say I was a little disappointed by the fruit portion. The menu mentioned fresh fruit, so I expected more than three thin orange slices and one sliced strawberry. HOWEVER, when I asked for more strawberries, our waiter kindly brought out a whole bowl for me, which I really appreciated. We stayed for about two hours, and as the night went on the place definitely got more crowded, so we headed out. Overall, this is such a cute and cozy cocktail bar. I'll definitely be back when the weather is warmer to try the other drinks and restaurants in the market.

This was our first time at Viale and restaurant week is always a good way to try somewhere new. Unfortunately our party of 3 all agreed Viale was a miss, especially for the price point. I ordered the salmon crudo, swordfish, and tiramisu. The salmon in the crudo was fresh as was the avocado, but it felt bland and like it was missing multiple ingredients - salt? Citrus? My friend said the sauce with the fried cauliflower she ordered didn't pair well with the cauliflower. The mains were the strong point of the meal - my swordfish was cooked well but still felt like it was missing something and I desperately wanted to ask for a lemon wedge but didn't get the opportunity to. My friend said her chicken parm was very good and my other friend said her crab risotto was decent and better than the salmon crudo. However, the desserts were once again disappointing like the starters. The lemon cheesecake was OK and the berry compote was my friend's favorite part - she ate that and left the rest. My friend's panna cotta was bland and the hazelnuts on it tasted stale or not prepared properly. My tiramisu was soggy and barely had the cream layer - sadly one of the worst tiramisus I've ever had at a formal dining restaurant. The service was a little slow but overall very good. Our server Marcelo was very good at checking in and keeping our water glasses full. There was complimentary bread which I really appreciated while waiting for the dishes. The ambiance was nice! We chose to sit inside for the AC, but I wish we'd chosen to sit outside because the inside was a little loud and we were struggling to hear at some points. This got better later in the evening when the restaurant was less full. All in all, it was an interesting experience. But the disappointing food means I won't be back and couldn't give this place more than 3 stars, especially when there are plenty of other restaurants in the Central area to try that can probably do better.
