Came here in a Saturday evening at 6 with a dinner reservation for 4. We had booked it a few hours earlier, so it may have been unnecessary. That being said, the place was packed after 7 so consider what time you're coming when trying to walk in without a reservation. The entrance is up the stairs and as soon as you walk through the door, you're greeted with a great view of Winthrop Park and the surrounding area. We were promptly seated and the lively wait staff came and took our drink order shortly thereafter. We started with the complimentary papadum and chutneys and our appetizer order of hara bhara kebab which was a nice vegetarian fritter. For our entrees, we got the baingan bhartan, chicken tikka masala (dairy free one), yellow daal tadka, tandoori roti, onion kulcha, and paneera bharura. The breads were all fantastic and I enjoyed the chicken tikka masala (dairy free made with coconut milk) just to see how it was different from a standard chicken tikka masala. For dessert, we got the gajar halwa (which was awesome!) and kulfi. Overall, I'm glad to have finally tried this place and may revisit it again in the future. The Maharaja is a more upscale Indian restaurant and is located on the second floor which provides a new view from the dining room area. The restaurant layout is like an L shape with a bar on the side and restrooms at the end. There are lots of windows so the restaurant gets a lot of natural lighting that's great for photos. The mango lassi is a staple drink that I order at every Indian restaurant. The one here was okay and wasn't too sweet. Our meal started off with a few pieces of complimentary crispy papadum served with 3 sauces. It was good, but a bit salty. The chicken Tikka masala was the star of the night. We asked them to make it on fire and as spicy as possible and they delivered! It came with a side of rice and the sauce was creamy and delicious. The Seekh kebab came out in a sizzling plate and was served with some vegetables. It looked great, but the flavor wasn't there and was surprisingly bland. The garlic naan was also a bit bland and disappointing. It didn't seem to have enough garlic flavor. The Aloo Gobhi (roasted cauliflower) was a nice vegetarian dish that was properly sauced. Overall, the food was alright, but expensive. The chicken tikka itself was $25 when it's usually a dish that's less than $20. The service started off excellent, our server was attentive and checked on us every couple of minutes. Towards the end of the meal, he was elusive and we had to get his attention to get to go boxes and the check. The food came out every quick, the first dish came out in less than 5 minutes. This was my second time back at this restaurant, and this time I brought a companion. The service was exceptionally fast. Our server was incredibly attentive and would always make sure to follow up and that everything is good. There was a plate that we had that had a stain on it. Our server noticed immediately and swapped out the plate without us having to tell him. He refilled our waters as soon as he saw that our glasses were empty. Compared to the first time that I was here, I think the service remains excellent and unchanged. The quality of the food was amazing. Overall, the dishes were delicious. I enjoy the blend of spices and flavors that you could taste within the food. In terms of food quality, this is easily becoming my favorite Indian restaurant in Boston. My friend and I had walked all around Boston, nearly 20000 steps in total. We finally decided to get dinner before heading back home, and this was where we decided to enjoy our last meal together. Food: Our waiter chose some of the house specialities for us including garlic naan, lamb dish, and chicken tandoori. They were warm and flavorful and hearty, not anything incredible special, but perfect ending to our long day. But be warned, they don't mess around with their spices, the spice levels are catered to true Indians, not an amaericanized weakling like me. I shed some tears eating the tandoori chicken and my tongue and esophagus burned, but it was still good and I actually ate through a fair portion with lots of water. The cocktail I ordered was a little too strong for my liking, felt kinda tipsy after the glass hehe Price: around $23-26 per dish, which is on the pricy side, but keep in mind, this is kind of an upscale Indian restaurant Ambiance: great view of Cambridge from the second floor, I was thankfully seated right next to big windows overlooking the outside little park area. The inside is very large spacious, dimly lit, decorated well with red undertones. Seems like a great place for a date night, romantic dinner together with your significant other Service: all the workers here are Indian, and our waiter was funny and very welcoming! He made menu suggestions, joked about few small things, and attentive, checking on our table frequently (but not TOO frequently) to see if we needed anything. Came here for lunch on a weekday and the place was pretty empty - definitely don't need to worry about getting a table in the middle of the day. We were seated quickly and had our orders taken almost as soon as we knew what we wanted; the workers didn't have much to do given how quiet the space was. We got a few starters and entrees for three people; I would say the amount we got was just enough for all of us. The taste was pretth good, I enjoyed the curries more than the apps especially due to portion size, all of which was on the smaller side especially given the price. I find this spot, if it's not for buffet, to be extremely overpriced. The mango lassi was good, just again on the smaller side. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back unless it was all you can eat. I've come in the past on a weekend and had a nice buffet then so only under those circumstances would I willingly return. I had been calling restaurant after restaurant, looking for a place to accommodate our large group of 20 hungry HGSE students and Vivek was the first manager to welcome us. Went here for a friend's birthday with a party of five. The presentation of the food was amazing. Everything came out in its own dish in a way that indicated that the plates were meant to share. For my main dish I ordered the chicken tikka masala with medium spice and a side of butter naan. The chicken did have a good but not overpowering spice and paired well with the naan. I was surprised to find that the dishes (the appetizers) were not served hot and I would have appreciated some indication of this on the menu. I wish I didn't have to pay over $20 for an entree just to get decent Indian food in the Boston area. The Maharaja is one of the better Indian spots I've tried in the city, and if I get too desperate for good Indian food I will spend $23 on chicken tikka masala. A group of 4 of us shared the chicken tikka masala ($22.99), paneer shahi korma ($21.99), yellow dal tadka ($19.99), papadum and chutneys ($4.99), tandoori roti ($4.50), plain naan ($4.50), garlic naan ($4.99), and onion kulcha ($4.99). The amount of food we ordered could have fed 6 people. We were stuffed! Each of the entrees came with rice. Only after moving to Boston did I realize that properly cooked rice (not hard or mushy) is a privilege, not a standard. Luckily the rice here was cooked well. The food was delicious-- the chicken and paneer chunks were quite big but they were not dry. The sauces were creamy and had their own unique flavor profiles. I was super impressed by the tadka dal, which was thicker and more textured than what I've been accustomed to. The tadka dal had pieces of minced cilantro which added freshness and crispiness to the dish. My favorite bread was the onion kulcha because the other breads we got were a bit too cracker-like for me. I liked how the onion kulcha was moist and chewy. The interior feels like it was designed as as an office space rather than a restaurant. The views through the large windows were nice though. The food itself was delish! That I hadn't yet eaten at this quintessential Harvard Square fixture after living in the neighbourhood for years was a bit surprising and certainly called for a long overdue visit. I stopped by for lunch last Friday and was disappointed - not with the restaurant, but at myself! - for not having come by before :P The four of us ordered everything to share - we had two entrees as well as a few orders of bread. Garlic naan was a particular highlight - we devoured it quickly and ordered more - but the roti was average at best, and I probably wouldn't order it again. For mains, we had the chicken tikka masala and the fish curry, both of which came with rice. Chicken tikka masala (their speciality, I think) was amazing - the sauce was so delicious, with a wonderful sweet flavour and creamy texture, and the chicken was juicy and tender (albeit in oft-unwieldy, really large pieces). Fish curry was also fantastic - curry rich and aromatic, and the fish tender and extremely flavourful. Portion sizes and price point were also really good; I was glad that we were feeling optimally full - not too stuffed - at the end of our meal... I can't imagine that would be the case had we each ordered one main, though, so definitely good to come as a group to share lots of dishes. However, as you reach the top of the stairs and turn the corner, a beautifully ornate, colorful door immediately signals you're in the right place. Being on the second floor offers a lovely bonus: a wonderful view of either JFK or Winthrop Street, depending on your table. We were seated promptly, and our server provided excellent service--attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious, arriving in a reasonable amount of time, with a perfect balance of flavors and spices. The prices are reasonable for the quality, in line with what you'd expect these days. I did not think an Indian restaurant in the heart of a city would make such delicious Indian food! Usually you'd find these gems in the 'burbs but yay for The Maharaja, smack in the middle of Hahvahd Square. The only reason we decided to try it out was because we got a Nift for takeout. We ordered chicken lollipop, sham savera, chicken curry, and one garlic naan. First of all, I could not believe they had chicken lollipop. I don't think I've ever seen it on the menu in the US! It wasn't the same as that I've had back home but t'was tasty. Sham savera is another dish that I've not seen here. Spinach-cheese dumplings in a tomato gravy, yum. The chicken curry was delicious too and that naan was superb even after we reheated it. All curries came with a side of rice meaning we had plenty leftover for the next day. Fast forward to two weeks later and we're back at The Maharaja for round two of takeout. This time it's tandoori wings, paneer makhani, chicken vindaloo, plain naan, and baingan raita. All of it was great - personally the vindaloo had a strong whole spice taste (not chili spicy, the garam masala kind) and could have been a bit toned down, but I'd still say it was good. The tandoori wings were well-cooked and the paneer makhani was tangy and buttery! We can't wait to order again and try other variety of dishes. I'll add that their rates are higher than other Indian restaurants and I have a feeling it's because of the location. The taste and quality is high though!
