After visiting Cafe on 3 last year, it was time to try Mariposa. Definitely more of a grown-up place (in appearance as well as cost), they also open an hour later at 11a. I took a seat at the counter and Frank came over with the menu, which was slightly different than what is currently online. I came in here deciding between the burger and rigatoni, but making this decision more difficult was the soup of the day (butternut squash), and one of their new items on the menu being Lomo Saltado with filet mignon ($48) or chicken ($38). Frank talked up the latter with beef, and I actually decided to go with this (but with chicken). Chicken consomme and popover with strawberry butter was brought out promptly. I've seen a cheese stick with previous photos on here; they do not provide them anymore, but I was happy with my regular favorites. I wasn't sure what to expect with this dish since I never heard of it before, but it was delicious. Basically, it's a Peruvian stir-fry with sliced meat, plum tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, rice (black forbidden rice in this case) and fries served with ketchup and aji verde. This was the first time I've left fries on my plate since I was enjoying pretty much everything else, and they were fun to dip into the aji verde. Lomo Saltado was just added to their menu as a regular item, so I hope it remains. This was a costly lunch, but I cleared that plate, and would do so again. Gratuity of 20% was already added, and the staff I interacted with deserved it. Although the location is right off the busy beauty/cosmetic department, the lively noise and activity did not disrupt the experience here in Mariposa. If this sounded too spicy/exotic for you, there are plenty of (mild) options to enjoy here at Mariposa such as salads, a lobster club (well, maybe not so simple), salmon, or rigatoni (which I almost went with) but am so glad I decided to try something new. read more

So we pick just that on our last day of the Dine LA. @mariposas.restaurant @neimanmarcus Beverly Hills. As soon as we seat in their dining table, we are greeted with their famous Neiman Marcus Popovers with the strawberry butter and chicken consommé to start. Our starter choices are really varied from Korean BBQ Prawn Lettuce Wrap, Lobster Bisque, and Cesar Salad. However when it comes to the entrees, this 2 options became the winner in our group: Wagyu Cheeseburger 8 oz. Wagyu beef patty, gruyere, caramelized onions, arugula, dijonnaise, brioche. Catch of the day: Chilean seabass with makrut lime leaf salt, stir-fried napa cabbage, carrits, scallions, thai basil, coconut-lemongrass broth. Doesn't disappoint. An amazingly quaint place to go to for lunch that serves amazing food. My bestie used to go here with her mom when her mom was still alive and I am grateful that she is sharing this place with me now. Been here multiple times but today we were greeted so well by the manager. They seated us immediately and we got our popovers with strawberry butter and amuse-bouche. We usually share a ceasar salad and a lobster gnocchi but today we had the summer corn agnolotti. The pasta was so refreshing and so light. *There's a New Sheriff in BH and His Name is Chef Charles* Had the great pleasure & opportunity to have lunch here again with my good ole pal/neighbor and sample Mariposa's new Summer Menu. Made a reservation and requested the same table/booth in Dannon's section because that's how I roll when things are done right the first time -- cross your fingers and hope for a repeat performance. The moment we stepped inside Mariposa's beautiful dining room, we were warmly greeted by their new GM who knew right away who I was...we struck up a nice conversation...and shown to our table. Dannon appeared to say hello and thanked us for coming back...and then Mr Popover Man joined the party to serve us their famous freshly made warm popovers with strawberry butter. While we were indulging in our savory treats, Chef Charles come by to introduce himself and explain the new Summer Menu. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking about their amazing Lobster Club Sandwich with the Truffle French Fries, I had enjoyed so much for lunch on my previous visit. But the more Chef Charles explained the signature dishes & salads and his culinary past, I knew the right thing to do was allow him to surprise us and choose our 4-course lunch. He began our meal with one of the best vegan soups I've had in a long time -- Cream of Leek soup with corn chowder. It was so delicious & refreshing and an excellent way to start things off. Generally, I don't eat soup as an appetizer at lunch, but this cup of vegan comfort food was so good yet subtle, I didn't want it to end. Then, not one but TWO of the most beautiful & gigantic salads were bestowed upon us. Now don't get me wrong, I love a large portion just as much as anyone, but these plates of green goddesses were like meals in itself...and when I joking told our waiter Dannon that one salad was more than enough (especially just eaten the soup & entrees still coming) he laughed & agreed...and said Chef couldn't decide which salad to share so he selected two different types...and you can always take home what we can't finish. Little Gem Salad with Crispy Artichokes: GOLDEN RAISIN-VERJUS VINAIGRETTE, HERBED FROMAGE BLANC, CANDIED WALNUTS (you had me at crispy artichokes) Excellente. I could eat this daily. The herbed fromage blanc was so nice & creamy and paired perfectly with the candied walnuts and crispy artichokes. The salad dressing was insanely good. 1924 Caesar Salad ROMAINE HEARTS, ROASTED CHERRY TOMATOES, GARLIC CROUTONS, PARMIGIANO-REGGIANO, 1924 CAESAR DRESSING I'm not big on Caesar Salads, but this simple big bad boy was cold, crisp and delicious. And when I inquired about the name of the salad, I was told that 1924 was apparently the 1st year a Caesar Salad was introduced. Rosie's Organic Chicken Breast TRI-COLOR FINGERLING POTATOES, SAUTÉED BROCCOLINI, CARAMELIZED CIPPOLINI ONIONS, MADEIRA CHICKEN JUS Everything was perfecto...especially liked the Madeira jus...and would order it again. Mariposa is kind of a weird restaurant. It's very good and has been around for ages, but it's in the basement of Neiman Marcus, where it only serves Neiman Marcus shoppers and maybe a regular customer base of rich Beverly Hills ladies who come in just to eat lunch (there is no dinner service). I never hear about people eating here, and it never gets any press, but it's the same as it's ever been, as far as I can tell, and worth a visit, particularly if you're already at the department store. I've been a few times over the years, always with my mom, who first took me when I was in high school. I'd turned sixteen or so without spending much time in restaurants that weren't Korean or, like, CPK, and my mom decided one day that I had horrible table manners and needed to learn to use a fork and knife like a lady. It definitely says something about Mariposa that it was one of the first places that came to mind when she set herself on this mission. We went again a few weeks ago for the first time in many years. It felt, in some ways, like Mariposa's time had passed. Department stores haven't done well in the internet age, and the Neiman Marcus basement wasn't exactly vibrant. The restaurant was quiet. It was also nice, though, calm and elegant, and the service was super professional, even on the formal side. We sat next to two old ladies who gave the waiter a hard time when he wouldn't substitute the butternut squash soup for the complimentary cup of non-vegetarian consommé. She actually whined that it wasn't fair. I was relieved for him when the check came and I saw the non-discretionary 20% service fee. I enjoyed my consommé, which was warming and flavorful, as well as the complimentary popover. This was the one thing I'd remembered about Mariposa, and it was pretty good, served with strawberry butter, if not as great as it had been in my head (I wonder if the popovers have time to get a tiny bit stale now that there's no real lunch rush). My mom and I split the cheeseburger and the lobster club, and both came cut in half, on separate plates, making them easy to share. The burger was delicious, with a juicy Creekstone Farms black angus beef patty, melty gruyère, caramelized onions, arugula, and dijonnaise on a soft brioche bun. The side of truffle fries was crispy and addictive, served with ketchup and mayo. The lobster club was an excellent sandwich, with plenty of lobster layered with heirloom tomato, avocado, smoked bacon, little gem, and truffle aioli on triangles of toasted brioche. It came with a side of fresh fried chips. This was a lovely lunch. The food was powerfully good for a restaurant with zero buzz. I'd recommend it if you want to eat fancy sandwiches and see some Beverly Hills blue hairs in their natural habitat, harassing the wait staff. read more

I recently had lunch in the beautiful Neman Marcus Mariposa café. The experience was simply divine. The manager David greeted me warmly & seated me at a wonderful table. My server Edwin swapped the chicken for lobster in my Ceaser salad. Mariposa serves my favorite Dammann French tea. Everything was scrumptious, especially the popovers they bring instead of bread. The place is superb. I felt transported to Place des Vosges where I last drank the same tea on one of the most famous squares in Paris. The mothers & daughters at the table next to me said their fish was fantastic. But the very best thing at Mariposa was the service. My mom and aunt took me here for my birthday lunch and I was blown away! They're known for their lobster sandwich but I boycotted seafood when I was 5, so I got the chicken and it was AMAZING!! They also start you with this croissant like bread that comes with a whipped strawberry butter and a small cup of chicken broth. Both are delicious and appreciated when waiting for the meal! The dessert was alright, not great but not bad. I feel like the matcha crème brûlée was really matcha-y. Like too much matcha. I think it would've been better if it was the regular vanilla custard with a matcha extract type or a hint of matcha powder type of vibe. Mariposa is amazing! I'd only been to the fashion island location but the menu here at the Beverly Hills location has more pasta. The bread and strawberry spread was amazing, and the lemonade was probably the best I'd ever had. Servers were attentive and the food was delicious. I love the chicken broth they give you at the beginning too. The actual restaurant itself is beautiful too. Price point is not bad either. The food in rodeo drive is meh so I'm glad to have mariposa to stop at in between shopping. The parking validation is also good for four hours so you can easily walk from Neiman to Saks all the way up to rodeo too. read more

I had lunch with a friend there last week and to our surprise there was this fee of $22.40 added to the bill. If you know, you know. I have been coming here for a long time and lately been dreaming of that popover. Today, my popover was not hot but it is still the best popover in LA. I really enjoyed the blended burger aka a beef patty studded with mushrooms. It comes protein style with lettuce no bun and a side salad. Good because I have my popover for carbs anyways. They have a monthly special menu, which looks great. They also have a full bar. Be sure to use opentable to guarantee your spot and rack up those points you probably never redeem. The only reason to go there is for their popovers. They were always the best! Warm, soft, moist (yes, I said moist) and steamy. I went there Saturday 2:45 pm and the popovers were dry, crusty, cold and stale. Also now they mix the strawberry jam w the butter - not a fan. Their food is mediocre but still charge $40+ on average per entree. Our server was rude when we asked for fresh popovers. He was aggro telling us the kitchen doesn't work that way. He was kind of like you'll get what you get because you came here so late (prison style). Sorry, we didn't know that this place closes at 3p when we got into our cars and drove over. Also, if the kitchen can handle three meals, why can't they handle fresh popovers? On top of that, they charge a 20% tip automatically even w a party of 3. Wine: A 2013 half bottle of Stag's Leap Artemis wine was superb, with a deep dark berry aroma, and smooth rich finish - perfect for a decadent lunch! Appetizer: Ahi tuna tartare was fresh, filled with avocado, paired together in a delicious combination a tangy zesty flavors from their homemade sauce.. Met up with a friend living nearby to Neiman Marcus and she suggested Mariposa. I don't get over to LA too often, but when I realized this was in Beverly Hills I thought wow....must be a pretty swanky joint! I showed up a bit early so got to wander around the store....looked like mostly geared toward female shoppers as the only men's section is on the top floor, and it was pretty deserted. The restaurant is located at the basement level, and since it's not a huge area, is pretty easy to find. I thought it was kind of cool that there were big glass windows looking into the restaurant, and being able to look outside into the shopping area from inside. The decor looked very upscale casual and everybody was dressed well. However, what I liked was how it's hidden down in the basement where it's quiet and you can carry on a pleasant conversation over a meal without having to shout. There's a host's podium right at the entrance where you would be greeted and shown to your table...it would have been nice if he'd smiled more though. Since my friend seemed to be more familiar with this place I let her lead the way.....she was asked if we had a reservation...we said no.... we were seated anyway. I actually liked our table....at a nice corner table against the wall. Our server immediately came by to welcome us, handed us the menu, and took our drink orders.....very nice, polite, and friendly guy. Like others have mentioned, the menu is quite limited, but there is definitely enough choices for a good meal. My friend already knew what she wanted, her usual, the Lobster Salad. I had wanted to order the Roasted Mary's Chicken Breast as it sounded d'lish, but I thought I was driving back down to OC after this so decided to go light and ordered the Chopped Chicken Salad. To spoil ourselves a bit we went ahead and ordered some Truffle Fries.....which we didn't end up getting because we were told it'd been given to another table by mistake....oh well. We were also given some complimentary bread.....well, more like a Yorkshire pudding with some butter and jam on the side......it was really good! Not only different from the usual dinner rolls, etc.....this was a very pleasant and yummy change! We were also given a tiny cup of what tasted like some broth with a petite finger pastry to dip in it (I'm guessing).....that was interesting. The salad ingredients were so fresh, the vinaigrette dressing yummy and not too heavy. Portions were also just right....not too huge (like that Cheesecake place) and not too small.....we definitely didn't need the truffle fries after all. It was a very good salad. For dessert, the only thing that really appealed to me then was the fruit tart, but it wasn't available. Then we asked what the featured dessert of the day was?......it was apple and pear crumble with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's also not the usual pie shaped crumble you get everywhere else. This was was, what my friend called it, a deconstructed apple and pear crumble. I don't care what it's called....it was yummy....loved the different textures of the walnuts, caramelized pear ad apple, etc. Service was very good, food was delicious, very pleasant and comfortable decor......and easy parking. Yes, the prices are somewhat high, but this is Beverly Hills after all so it's pretty normal, I'm guessing. The remodeled Mariposa is now separated from the cosmetics department by a glass wall. The menu had been expanded, and now includes gluten-free selections and nutritional information. The demitasse cup of consommé and the popover are still part of lunch at the Mariposa. My friend had the Lobster Club Sandwich with french fries and I had the Turkey London Broil Sandwich with a salad. Everything was very good. I thought that my lunch today was better than what I had for lunch (some sort of "Moroccan Wrap") the last time that we were there before the remodeling. My friend always has a Turkey Club Sandwich which she always likes. I tried a few of her french fries, which I thought were a little too salty, be she didn't think that they were. We often feel the same about popcorn at the movies. Our reservation was for 11:45. Came here with a friend, who loves Neiman Marcus. Did a little shopping and did a little eating to brunch. To my surprise the food was actually really tasty, I expected it to be flavorless and overrated based on the name (prestige) of NM. I tried the steak sandwich which had steak that was not overcooked, the toppings added new elements to the palate and the bit of a spicy kick to it, along with the tang of the cheese made it a well composed sandwich. The sweet potato fries were also nice cooked and added a bit of sweetness in between the savory bites of the sandwich. Let's start with the pros: the location is inside NM. That's definitely a plus. They give you a delicious chicken broth and puff bread as an appetizer, definitely another plus. Waiter and the support staff were kind and friendly What was not so good: We ordered the lobster Cobb and it was ok. For the price, I'm not sure I would order it again. The pieces of lobster were much Smaller than the pictures people posted so I'm not sure what changed in the quality. 3 people in our party ordered the same thing and that was the general consensus. My friend and I also ordered the steak frites and although the fries that came as a side dish we're great, the steak itself was rubber and chewy. I couldn't even get through more than a piece of it What was really disappointing was that there was no offer of taking back the steak. Lunch today at Mariposa was absolutely fabulous! We took advantage of the DineLA pre fixe menu. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted even better! They brought out the signature popovers and the mini breadstick with broth. I could drink that broth for days! I had the Gorgeous Mary which was nice and spicy. I ordered some truffle fries in addition to some shrimp and bay scallops ceviche which was so refreshing with the avocado and cucumbers! I had the miso marinaded sea bass which melted in your mouth and was so flavorful with the saffron broth and the forbidden black rice topped with shaved asparagus. My plate was wiped clean. Ended our lunch with four mini famous Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies. So good! Service was impeccable and the restaurant was clean and perfectly maintained. Highly recommend!!! read more

What a lovely place to lunch! We wanted the whole lunching experience so we went all out from starting with cocktails to ending with an after meal coffee. First things first, this is located on the bottom floor of Neiman Marcus, another cafe and bar is located at the top floor. Reservations might be usurious because the restaurant got pretty full on a Saturday afternoon. The decor is modern with interesting glass sculpture wall/curtain and a light video wall behind the bar. They start you off with a lovely consommé and all you can eat popovers that you can slather with butter and jam. In true lunching fashion we each got a salad. The fish and the shrimp/scallops with delicious. We ended our meal with a small box of the famous Neiman Marcus cookies, complete with a copy of the recipe as well, and an a coffee. What's a perfect way to take a break & refuel during a fun day of at "Neiman Marcus?" Lunch at "Mariposa," of course! Located in the basement of the famed "Neiman Marcus Department Store" of Beverly Hills, "Mariposa" is a popular place for "lunch with the ladies." A classy, yet semi-casual restaurant with mid-century modern decor, "Mariposa" is probably one of my favorite spots to relax & re-charge while enjoying a delicious lunch. Your experience always starts with complimentary chicken consommé & cheese straw, along with their signature warm popover served with strawberry preserves & butter...all of which are an embracing, comforting touch. Keep in mind, however, that at the Beverly Hills location, there is no "strawberry butter" (unlike the other locations)....instead, each entity is served separately as strawberry preserves in one (1) container, & the butter in the other container. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but for avid fans of the "Neiman Marcus" stores & restaurants, it's good to know before you go. The cocktail, wine, & champagne selection is nice, the menu selection is diverse, & there is practically something for everyone. Selections range from great appetizers like Lobster Egg Rolls, to creative salads, to fantastic mains (Chilean Sea Bass, Lobster Club Sandwich, Filet Mignon, Chicken, & more - all of which are great). My favorite item, however, is the "Lobster Cobb Salad," which is arguably the best salad I've ever had (to date). The flavors of the salad mesh incredibly well, & it is so good, that there is hardly a need for the delicious dressing (on-the-side), at all! Featuring julienned snow peas, shaved boiled egg, avocado, bacon (& they are so considerate to always ask me in-advance if I would like the bacon omitted), feta cheese, & of course...that lobster. Believe me, they do not mess around with the lobster, & it is sooooo worth it! For finishers, there is a small (but nice) selection of desserts, & (of course) they have the infamous "Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies" (served in their signature "Neiman Marcus" jewelry box). Very nice. Overall, the service at "Mariposa" is impeccable (thanks for always taking extra-special care of me, Jose). Things have improved at Mariposa! This is a great setting for a girls lunch or a lunch meeting. It's quiet with great service. It's hard to resist the popovers and chicken broth that are brought over when you sit down. Indulge a little and spread the popover with butter and strawberry preserves. Menu items are definitely hit and miss but the tuna tartare is usually a hit, as is the lobster club. The green beans make for a healthy but flavorful side, while fish tacos are nothing special. Great place to have lunch with girlfriends. Service is very slow so if you're in a hurry don't dine here. We all had the filet and substituted the fries for their mashed. On this day halibut was the fresh special however we declined because someone else had a seafood dish and the entire restaurant smelled like Fishermans Warf. Hearing so many rave reviews, my family and I came here for brunch before a day of shopping. We had Open Table reservations, but didn't really need it as there were plenty of empty tables at 2 pm. We started off with complimentary popovers, mini cheese twists, and chicken broth for each person. Both the popovers and cheese twists were buttery, flaky, fluffy, and complemented the broth so well. After quickly (and politely) devouring all three, I was pretty full, so my family and I shared a Lobster Club ($27), Honey-Roasted Mirin Glazed Salmon ($25), and Truffle Parmesan French Fries ($10). The salmon was tender and flavorful, while the fries were mediocre and pretty forgettable. But that sandwich? So bomb. Cool upscale retro-1950's decor. The service was excellent - we arrived (reservation was for) 30 minutes before kitchen close ( didn't know that when we booked the reservation) but Jose handled that very graciously. I wanted the lobster Cobb but preferred softboiled runny yolk egg instead of hard boiled egg. No problem. The dishes obviously used top shelf ingredients, well prepared. So why only three stars? I'm not sure why, but the flavor of the dishes just didn't really shine, didn't really stand out. The linguini was properly cooked, with the right texture; lots of clams, which I love...so why didn't it come up the the level of, say, Matteos? Same with the lobster Cobb - the lobster didn't have that rich oceany goodness of great fresh lobster, the texture was just a little rubbery; the salad just fell short of really flavorful avocados, bacon, etc. I don't know why, the flavors just seemed muted, despite what seemed like top quality ingredients. I'll have to revisit to try to figure this out, especially because the service was so good...but for now, just a solid 3 stars - if you are shopping in the area and are hungry, don't hesitate to try it. read more

Mariposa is one of those restaurants where you'd expect to see Real Housewives of (fill in the city) lunching after a few hours of blowing hella moolah on designer anything. I was a little leery about trying this place for fear of feeling out-of-place, self-conscious, stuffy, or all of the above. But it was my birthday and I figured, what the hell? I'm up for the "snooty" challenge. Bring it! For first time Mariposa diners, know that it's located at the very bottom floor of Neiman Marcus. I must've looked in every other floor only to learn that I gotta go to the lowest level. (See, out of place already!) I arrived at 2:00 pm on a Wednesday and found that the place is still bumping with the lunch crowd. (They close at 3:00, btdubs). I set out to order a noodle dish per my mother's reminder that morning..."it's for long life, dear!" So I ordered the lobster spaghettini, and a cup of tomato soup to start. The servers were very polite and I definitely felt like I was in a hotel restaurant with the white linens and the fancy silverware. While waiting for my food, I was brought this huge cheese popover with a side of strawberry jam and butter. I was also brought a shot of chicken soup and a little stick of cheese twist for dipping. It was quite cute, actually. Shortly afterward, my soup arrived. Very tasty and perfect to quell my hunger pangs. I tried to leave space for my lobster spaghettini and I was sure glad I did. For $26, the dish had plenty of fresh lobster chunks sauteed in butter and white wine. The pasta was cooked al dente. The serving might look small but I actually had a good portion wrapped up to go. For dessert, I had the Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookies. An order comes with four cookies nicely packaged in an Neiman Marcus box and also included the cookie recipe! Now we can all verify that recipe going around the Internet for years. Yes, my entire meal cost me fifty something dollars. However, I would probably go back to Mariposa in the future for special occasion lunches like this one. The service was impeccable. There is free parking for customers for three hours.
