I'll be honest that this review is a mostly negative affair. I'll start with the positives: Waitstaff at this location are brilliant and stand out as exceptional in the quality of their work. They are attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and helpful. The decor and atmosphere of the space are beautiful and charming. It feels as though you are in a dimly lit little English home from the 1930s in parts of the space and it just makes you feel like you're in for an elevated yet homey meal ahead. In terms of the negatives: The food is unfortunately not up to the standards created by the waitstaff and venue's decor. Most dishes are bland in seasoning or off putting in texture. Here is a synopsis of the dishes we tried: The sourdough and treacle butter is a great starter (as should be expected for $8 for four pieces of grilled bread). It has a unique sweet and buttery flavor but I'll be honest that I feel it should be a complimentary table starter for the meal. The lamb ribs appetizer has the roots of an interesting dish but it fails in that the meat is too fatty and hard to deal with in the presentation. So fatty, that once allowed to sit for five minutes, the fat returned to solid and became an inedible dried oil slick that prevented any other flavors from being observed in the dish. In addition, the pickled onions in the dish, while meant to create an acidic cut through the fattiness of the lamb, can be overpowering to the dish. The steak stroganoff pie was a terrible misstep for me in design and execution. I was told the dish was in a puff pastry but it arrived appearing to be a hot water crust that ate too hard and didn't break apart in flakiness as was promised. Instead, I received a very diminutive pie the fit into my palm over some watery mashed potatoes with a very bland brown gravy that I cannot tell you what drippings if any were used to make it. The filling was mostly mushrooms which ate too salty and five or six pieces of mostly okay tasting beef. There was no creaminess that a stroganoff name would promise, just some over salted mushrooms in a tough crust. We also tried their tikka masala and were equally disappointed. The chicken in the dish ate with a rubbery texture that just did not lend itself to a positive experience. In addition, the masala broke into butter and tomato sauce which, despite vigorous attempts at reincorporation, failed to come back together. As a result, we were left eating a very bland and oil slicked sauce over oddly bouncy chicken. The naan (for an additional $2 a piece) did not feel authentic to any locale and were not the soft, pillowy bread naan is known to be for an accompaniment to a tikka. The saving grace of the meal was their sticky toffee pudding. My god, if the meal matched the dessert, the review would be a 5/5. Buttery caramel over a rich and flavorful pudding made it a silver lining to a disappointing meal. I cannot recommend the dessert enough. As a side note, if you desire a hot toddy, do be careful ordering the ginger syrup. We were not warned and thus had an equivalent of a boozy Theraflu like warm drink to pair with our miraculously diamond in the rough dessert. Overall, I do not believe the wonderful waitstaff and atmosphere can make up for the quality of most of the dishes here. Two people, two apps, two entrees, a drink, and a dessert was $160 after tip and I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone as an experience they deserve having unless they only want a good dessert. read more

We had reservations for the bar at 6:30pm on a Sunday. There was only one other couple at the bar and a few tables seated in the dining room. We are thankful they are open on Sundays. The place is gorgeous, the seating is very comfortable, and the service is great. There are three huge and beautiful co-ed restrooms. The attention to comfort and detail at Marigold matches all of the other Crown Restaurants. We appreciate this very much. For our first visit, we went with the traditional English dishes that they are highlighting. The Scotch Egg was fantastic! Best we've ever had. However, it didn't seem to go with the sauce underneath it. We ordered the Chicken, Leek & Bacon Pot Pie, and the Butter Chicken. The pot pie was a lovely presentation, but we found it very dry with not enough leek and no discernable bacon. It was served with a sauce, but there was no where near enough of it. All it tasted like was chicken and dough. We would not order a pot pie again. The butter chicken was delicious. The chicken tasted of grill before it was introduced into the beautifully balanced sauce. The saffron rice it is served with is delightful, the naan is yummy, and the cucumber salad is a refreshing addition the the dish (it does have a lot of cilantro in it). Both dishes were quite pricey, but we understand the food cost dilemma going on these days. We will go back to try more dishes to see if this place is a solid restaurant in our rotation. read more

Was super excited to try Marigold tonight, an elevated English Pub? right up my proverbial alley! There were awesome, pretty good and puzzling things, here's the full deal: First the awesome - The pub pie. GET THIS NOW! They had the chicken, leek and bacon one tonight (it rotates) and it was exceptional. I cannot wait to come back and try some of the other options (Spiced lamb, Hell yeah!) The falafel scotch egg was also unique and delicious, fantastic job there. The PUZZLING - Ok so you are trying to be an English pub but no draft beer?????? That is an odd call and frankly I expect better from Crown Restaurant Group. I almost walked out when I found that out. Gin cocktails were good but most pub food screams for ales and cans/bottles just aren't doing it... also poor were the attempts at pouring those cans out into pint glasses resulting in excessive foam head on a Smithwicks (which was mispronounced too!). Also puzzling, Nay AWFUL, no curry sauce for the chips? What respectable English pub, also serving non-spicy (white people) curries doesn't have a curry sauce to serve over the chips or as a dip? Has whoever designed this menu ever been to England?!?!? The chips themselves were tasty but they were served with a cold apricot puree with a touch of curry that was more reminiscent of baby food than anything else. For $12 as a side item, I expect so much better than what was delivered. Pretty good - Service was attentive, the mussels were tasty, the sourdough naan was unique and paired well. Overall, I will come back for the pie. Might not drink there unless the draft beer is installed. The meal had a $180 price tag for 2 which was steep for what was delivered. This place made for the most perfect date night meal. We started off with some cocktails that hit right in every way possible and were 100x better than the ones we had just had next door at Prim. The menu here is large and well varied with vegetarian, pescatarian, or nice meaty options. We went with the crispy paneer and it was so good I probably could have left happy just after that. Then we ordered the broccoli salad. Though the broccoli was essentially raw (and it was a huge plate of it), it was bursting with flavor. For our main course we ordered the shrimp Malabar curry with naan. Though it was a coconut base, it was so perfectly balanced, the only problem was there wasn't enough! We came here without a reservation and were promptly seated at the bar. The bartenders were busy but did a great job making sure we had what we needed throughout the evening. This is a Indian British restaurant. The ambiance here was pretty nice. I like the aesthetic. For appetizers, my boyfriend and I tried prime beef tartare, scotch eggs and Batada vada. The presentation of prime beef tartare was great. The tartare was sitting on the bone marrow. Unfortunately, there were too many things going with this dish. They added onion marmalade, egg yolk jam and capers. These flavors were all competing with each other. The quality of the beef was super, but with all the additions, it couldn't shine through. Moving to the next appetizer which was the scotch eggs, there were a few Indian spices mixing in there. I don't know how I feel about it. The spices did not really enhance the scotch eggs but I didn't dislike it. The batada vada was a potato fritter with masala spices. They cooked those fritters perfectly. They were very light and crispy. For entrees, I selected lamb shank and my partner got short rib vindaloo. We loved Indian foods but these two dishes we got from here did not meet our expectations. Indian food is known for its spices, but this lacked the flavor we expected. I want my Indian food to be potent in spices to the point that if I bring it home and heat it up on the stove with some water, the flavors still hold up. That was not the case here. However, the lamb was super tender and fell off the bone. For the price, there was not a lot meat in the short rib vindaloo. Additionally, the saffron rice was a bit wet, and did not strong flavor. The winner in this place was the sticky toffee pudding. It was super delicious. The Chantilly cream worked perfectly well with the pudding. Overall, this place has a lot of potential. They just need to dial in the flavoring on some of the dishes cause otherwise the cooking and preparation was great. Also, the service was top notch. Our server was amazing and attentive. read more

Ok so we are on the road, heading from Florida to Michigan, and we stopped in Cincinnati. Marigold is interesting, kind of a post-colonial modern British bistro. Lots of British libations--so I had a Lagavulin--Scotch from Islay--delicious. But do you really have to charge $29 dollars for a jigger? Really?? For food, my wife had buttered chicken curry and I had fish and chips. Both were great and reasonably priced. The room is upbeat, modern and buzzy. Ambiance: Love the dark library look. I will say that the acoustics are bad and I felt like I was yelling. Not a typical dinner din. Felt more like the volume level of a crowded Wings and Rings. Food and drink, item by item: Chai Espresso Martini: a fun take on the drink, but a little too milky for my taste. Pimm's Cup: refreshing and delightful! Prince's Paloma: favorite drink of the night. A little citrisy sour on the front and then a wash of smokiness. Absolutely will order again. Prime Beef Tartare: Nice mustard profile. Was a fun presentation on the bone. Pachadi Salad: Very fun and light. Crisp and playful. Not a necessary to order but a nice to order for the vitamin content (lol) Fish & Chips: Order this, everytime you go. Seriously the best fried fish I've ever had. The aioli has a good tang to it, the mushy peas are wonderful, the chips are a nice hearty french fry, but holy crap that fish. Good crunch, good batter. Only thing that would've made it better would be extra salt on the table. English Carbonara: Skip this one. It felt like a cold pasta salad from the Whole Foods counter that got heated up. The pasta itself was a nice bite but the flavor profile was bad. Korma Chickpea & Squash - It was just fine to me but my girlfriends all loved it. I really like the Crown restaurant group, this is definitely last on the totem pole for me. Simply put, it just wasn't that good, very mid to say the least. The ambiance is nice and the service was very friendly, especially from Noah & Billie at the bar. The fish n chips had a nice crunch and was fresh but nothing special. The traditional purée peas served on the side were not good. My sausage roll was slightly cold in the middle and the gravy was room temperature. This dish was not good at all. Probably the worst dish that I've had all year and I love house made sausage typically. We came specifically for the oyster stuffies and they were out of them. The pork croquettes were unique, the jam/sauce/gravy makes it a pretty decent dish. I won't be back, not my jam. My honest opinion folks. read more

The space is beautiful, and most of the food was delicious. I love Indian food, so naturally I ordered the butter chicken. The server warned us that the flavors had been toned down to better suit the western palate. Still, I found the dish to be incredibly bland and have a strange flavor. My bestie and I checked out Marigold for my belated birthday celebration. They had the cutest birthday certificate that they put on the table so everyone wished me regards! I definitely felt celebrated. We both had the Prince's Paloma. That curry syrup made for a top notch drink! We started off with the scotch egg. Until dessert, it was my favorite dish of the meal! The egg was cooked perfectly and all the elements came together for the best scorch egg I've ever had. We continued with the much lauded Pachadi salad but found it to be just ok. For our main, we wanted the lobster pot pie but they ran out. We went with the back up option of fish and chips and found it to be more than adequate. Mushy peas are so good- who knew? Finally, we almost passed on dessert, but were convinced by the sticky toffee pudding. Oh my goodness! That sauce was heavenly! I had heard mixed things about Marigold, but wanted to check it out for myself. I have a high bar for Indian food, and Indian fusion often falls short for me. Marigold is close to Fountain Square, with ample parking garages nearby. Dark green walls, but high ceilings and large windows make for an open, warm and chic space. Our server was very helpful explaining he menu and offering suggestions. The premise is English pub, with an Indian flare. Some dishes are just straight up British pub food, but others are jus Indian, with some fusion in between. For starters, we tried the batada vada, chilled lobster salad, and mushroom samosa. Honestly, I'd recommend all of those. Mushroom samosa was my favorite out of those, despite being on the fence about ordering it since I expected a samosa to be pretty "basic". The chilled lobster salad was very light and refreshing. The pachadi salad was pretty busy, but the flavors worked well. For the main courses, we tried the short rib vindaloo and malabar shrimp curries. Both were great; the Malabar shrimp had a subtle sweetness to it that went with the shrimp very well, while the short rib vindaloo was hearty. Spice was present but definitely not overpowering in anything. The only thing that fell short was the naan for me. It was very doughy and dense, not soft and fluffy as naan should be. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal here and was dining with a friend who's lived around the world so I asked her to rate and review: "Beef Tartare: I really like the combination of the bone marrow with the beef tartare and the flavor of the egg yolk on top--very different from traditional bone marrow and an intriguing combination of flavor. The Butter Chicken: Very authentic Indian flavor. Would have liked a little bit more spiciness to it, but that's my preference. The sourdough naan bread - it's unusual naan bread because you could taste the sourdough, but it brings that fusion flavor. The Fish and Chips: Very filling, loved the pea mash. Fancy version of the typical fish and chips you'd eat at a pub in London, but very legit. Had dinner yesterday, early evening, with colleagues. We were staying at the Westin across the street. Let me tell you, this is a good place to eat. Great atmosphere and very informed staff. We arrived pretty much after it opened for the evening. Our server, Christian, greeted us warmly and broke down the menu for us. If you don't like Indian food, there is a little of British fare that you may like. Fish and chips and cottage pie. Christian suggested the Pachadi salad to share or as an entree. Delicious flavors. It is a big salad so sharing it is suggested or you can have it as a meal. I had Sauvignon blanc but my colleagues tried their craft cocktails. One had the marigold martini, another had the chai espresso martini. And my other colleague had the Prince's Paloma. Two picked our entrees under the London Curries. I had the Malabar Shrimp and my colleague had the Short Rib Vindaloo. Chefs kiss!! Great flavors. The other had the trout and the English carbonara. On the positive side: The ambiance was lovely, and the wait staff were all very nice. However, the food struck out badly. The Caesar salad was extremely overdressed. I love Caesar dressing but it had at least twice the necessary amount, practically drowning in the stuff. The rice was too salty. The naan not seasoned enough (or at all). The curry sauce was very good, however the short ribs were tough and chewy. I will try this place again next time I'm in town, because with reviews this good they must have been having an off night. read more

First let me say the restaurant is beautiful and the staff were so attentive and friendly. However, I hate to say that I was incredibly let down by the food. We got two appetizers : sourdough bread with treacle was good, the lamb ribs had a nice sauce but the meat itself felt low quality and tasted off. For the mains: butter chicken with naan and stroganoff pot pie...such a let down. It was the absolute most bland Indian food I've ever I had and the sourdough naan was not good. The pot pie was also bland with hardly any meat and the mashed potatoes tasted like they were made with water. So sad. The saving grace of the night was the sticky toffee pudding which was absolutely delicious. I'd go back just for that dessert. We finally got to try this place out and it was worth the wait! We ordered a bunch of stuff so we could try it all. My entree was the shrimp curry and it was amazing, great flavor and a generous portion for a reasonable price. I'd order that again for sure. I also got a bite of the potpie and the scotch egg, both also yummy. The service was efficient until we needed the check to make our show, we had to flag our server down. The atmosphere is amazing, we were tucked into a dark corner, but I could see the whole space, very cool vibe. I'm sure we'll be back soon! read more

Went to Marigold for the first time last night and it was phenomenal! I was very pleasantly surprised by the pachadi salad to start off with, it was recommended by our server and was DELICIOUS! We also really enjoyed the trout dish with saag aloo, the fish was perfectly tender and cooked well. The star of the night was the lobster pot pie... it was absolutely delicious and had huge chunks of lobster mixed within the dish as well! The service and ambiance of the restaurant was wonderful as well! I can't wait to go back and try some more dishes! read more

Awesome experience. Warm, welcome and friendly. We were the first customer on the official opening day. We had our picture taken and posted to thier Instagram! The decor is lovely, place settings unique and different. The cocktails in my opinion are amazing! We tried Pimms Royal Cup: gin, ginger,lemon and cucumber tonic. I am not a gin drinker but gave it a try as recommended. It was delicious. The Delicious Sour was my second it was equally fantastic, whiskey, peach, chamomile, lemon and egg white. My dinner companion had Princes Paloma which was also tasty. For food we started with oyster stuffies. They were flavorful but the bread crumbs soaked up too much of the herb butter for me. I like my oysters moist. The fish and chips were good. There was something a tad bit salty but still good. The butter chicken was very enjoyable. I can't wait to try more cocktails and more food. A friend and I dined Feb 4th. We ordered Trout with saag aloo. The fish was overcooked until grey and crusted. The saag aloo consisted of salty spinach. No potatoes. I even told the server if he could find a potato I would tip an extra $50. He asked how to make it right. I stated,"I'd like to see a potato". He brought a small dish. From the moment I walked in spontaneously, I was greeted by the hostess in the most friendly and welcoming way. I was dining alone and she specifically said that Cassidy (the bartender) would take care of me since I chose a table in the bar area. Not only was Cassidy helpful and attentive, but the food came out quickly and hot, my cocktail was super flavorful and delicious and the manager came to check in on me and was continuously circling through, talking to patrons. The food was very flavorful and a very good portion (I took half of it home) and the ambience was delightful. Good energy with music and patrons' talking and laughter, but not too loud. When we asked about the rice there was a little bit of waiting time and we were told they ran out of rice. We would have changed our order if they had let us known. We asked for more naan. We went for restaurant week and Marigold did not disappoint! I had their signature salad which was a symphony of flavors and textures. The Trout was a standout. Impeccably fresh and cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and moist and flaky inside. The generous .piece of fish sat on a bed of fresh spinach and sliced fingerling potatoes was scented with exotic spices. The sticky toffee pudding!
