More people came in but the restaurant was pretty empty all evening. Our server, Rachel was very friendly and helpful, going over the menu and made sure our waters were filled and we had what we needed throughout the evening. I asked her opinion between two cocktails and went with her suggestion of the chai espresso martini which was delicious! We started with the sourdough bread that came with treacle and honey butter which I thought would be more remarkable, if pretty much tasted like run of the mill butter. For dinner, my husband and I split the pachadi salad and the short rib vindaloo. The salad was crunchy and fresh and very flavorful, I would definitely get it again. Went to make a reservation here for a Wednesday night. We have a group of 4, but one may get called into work. When I went to make the reservation, I found that that if we show up with 3 instead of 4 we would pay a $20 per PERSON fee. I have heard of no-show fees for a whole missed reservation, but a missing person is offensive. Do I get a discount if my service is slow because a server called in sick? What if the entree I came in for is sold out? I bet not. We were able to find a table at a different restaurant that puts an emphasis on the experience, not the profit times seats times turns equation. It's a shame. Came here with my wife on a Sunday night and the restaurant was mostly empty except for one other larger party. They describe themselves as an upscale British pub focusing on Indian fusion dishes. The space is nicely laid out with a nice mural on one wall and plenty of seating in addition to a bar. We got a handful of plates including the paneer appetizer, tartare, lamb ribs, butter chicken, and bangers and mash. The food was good, though not great. They had some interesting fusion dishes but nothing was really outstanding except the chili paneer appetizer, that was really excellent. Overall, it's a cool spot with some interesting dishes. We had a 6:00 reservation on a Wednesday evening. It was bitter cold out and the restaurant was not crowded. The entire dining experience was top notch. The restaurant is chill and classy. Our server was knowledgeable, helpful, accommodating and had a wonderfully subtle sense of humor. The menu is small, but varied. While everything we ate was superb, there are so many other interesting items on the menu that it only makes sense to come back. My nephew had East Coast Oysters and loved them. He and his wife shared English Carbonara; there was not a single piece of pasta left. They also shared Steak & Chips. The steak was so tender, no knife was needed. I ordered the Short Rib Vindaloo. At our server's suggestion, I asked to include a side of chili paste. Dipping my spoon into the paste added amazing flavor to each bite. The Sourdough Naan was tender and perfect for ensuring nothing was left in the bowl. A small bowl of sliced cucumbers, onions and tomato came with the dish. I didn't know what to do with it so I dumped it into the vindaloo. While that may not have been the proper approach, I have to say the crisp, pickled veggies were a perfect addition. This meal was outstanding. Mark had Fish & Chips. I looked at the price and thought, "Oh my!", but my shock was quickly calmed by the massive pieces of fish that arrived at the table. The fish was perfectly, lightly breaded and was flaky and delicious. Another great meal. Dessert. Don't miss dessert! My nephew's wife had the Lemon Posset. Our server recommended this dessert as the lightest offering. We all tried it and wow! Amy told our server it was so good she wanted to lick the bowl. I will start by stating that the Crown Restaurant Group is by far my favorite! Thee most consistent and amazing group of restaurants in cincy!! I've officially been to all of them. I stopped in last night for my birthday dinner and tried the prefix menu and everything was made to perfection. I tried the steak and chips with the Pachadi salad. The salad was so fresh and delicious with a vinaigrette as the dressing. The steak and chips was a little more salty than I prefer but I still enjoyed it. Make note they don't carry steak sauce. I tried Marigold for date night after all the recent hype and they did not disappoint. Overall, most of what we ordered was flavorful. We shared the mushroom samosas and the accompanying mint yogurt chutney was so good. The trout was cooked perfectly although I do wish it had a curry sauce (while I jealously side-eyed my husband's malabar shrimp). Unfortunately, I deducted a star for the sourdough naan as it was a massive fail (absolutely nothing like naan due to the heaviness). Additionally, the chai I ordered was meh. We celebrated our anniversary at Marigold and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The evening started off with complimentary sparkling champagne, which was such a thoughtful touch. We each ordered a cocktail-- I had the Mango Lassi and my partner had the Stirred Bird. Both were complex, balanced, and genuinely delicious. For our appetizer, we had the Prime Beef Tartare. Once again Crown Republic has added another gem to our city. Our server was phenomenal and really added to the experience. His knowledge and exuberance made the meal feel like an experience. You can tell they are still new just because he had to ask some questions to the chef regarding what is gluten free. For the entrees the table had the butter chicken curry, the cottage pie, the shrimp curry, and the mussels. Everything was hot, obviously homemade and so comforting and tasty. I'll be honest that this review is a mostly negative affair. I'll start with the positives: Waitstaff at this location are brilliant and stand out as exceptional in the quality of their work. They are attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and helpful. The decor and atmosphere of the space are beautiful and charming. It feels as though you are in a dimly lit little English home from the 1930s in parts of the space and it just makes you feel like you're in for an elevated yet homey meal ahead. In terms of the negatives: The food is unfortunately not up to the standards created by the waitstaff and venue's decor. Most dishes are bland in seasoning or off putting in texture. Here is a synopsis of the dishes we tried: The sourdough and treacle butter is a great starter (as should be expected for $8 for four pieces of grilled bread). It has a unique sweet and buttery flavor but I'll be honest that I feel it should be a complimentary table starter for the meal. The lamb ribs appetizer has the roots of an interesting dish but it fails in that the meat is too fatty and hard to deal with in the presentation. So fatty, that once allowed to sit for five minutes, the fat returned to solid and became an inedible dried oil slick that prevented any other flavors from being observed in the dish. In addition, the pickled onions in the dish, while meant to create an acidic cut through the fattiness of the lamb, can be overpowering to the dish. The steak stroganoff pie was a terrible misstep for me in design and execution. I was told the dish was in a puff pastry but it arrived appearing to be a hot water crust that ate too hard and didn't break apart in flakiness as was promised. Instead, I received a very diminutive pie the fit into my palm over some watery mashed potatoes with a very bland brown gravy that I cannot tell you what drippings if any were used to make it. The filling was mostly mushrooms which ate too salty and five or six pieces of mostly okay tasting beef. There was no creaminess that a stroganoff name would promise, just some over salted mushrooms in a tough crust. We also tried their tikka masala and were equally disappointed. The chicken in the dish ate with a rubbery texture that just did not lend itself to a positive experience. In addition, the masala broke into butter and tomato sauce which, despite vigorous attempts at reincorporation, failed to come back together. As a result, we were left eating a very bland and oil slicked sauce over oddly bouncy chicken. The naan (for an additional $2 a piece) did not feel authentic to any locale and were not the soft, pillowy bread naan is known to be for an accompaniment to a tikka. The saving grace of the meal was their sticky toffee pudding. My god, if the meal matched the dessert, the review would be a 5/5. Buttery caramel over a rich and flavorful pudding made it a silver lining to a disappointing meal. I cannot recommend the dessert enough. As a side note, if you desire a hot toddy, do be careful ordering the ginger syrup. We were not warned and thus had an equivalent of a boozy Theraflu like warm drink to pair with our miraculously diamond in the rough dessert. Overall, I do not believe the wonderful waitstaff and atmosphere can make up for the quality of most of the dishes here. Two people, two apps, two entrees, a drink, and a dessert was $160 after tip and I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone as an experience they deserve having unless they only want a good dessert. read more
