I use to go to Maria Bonita's often but moved away from Provo. Now that I'm back I went again today! I had tried calling in to make reservations but no one ever answered. But luckily my group of 4 didn't have to wait to be seated, which I really appreciated! The menu is fairly big so it was hard to decide. Once we ordered the food came pretty quick! We were pleasantly surprised. The food was so good! The chips and salsa we got at the beginning were delicious. The tortilla chips were thin and crunchy. The salsa was a little too spicy for my friend but I liked it. I had taquitos and enchiladas and really liked the texture and flavor. Our friend ordered horchata and it looked amazing! I had lunch at this restaurant today and found a long hair attached to one of the chips I put in my mouth and then another long hair mixed in with the Chicken Tostada I ordered. It was disgusting! After I left a one star rating with these two comments, I took a minute to check what other comments had been left by customers before me. As a read a few of the comments I found another customer about a month ago had also commented they had found hair in their order. Seems to be a problem.Perhaps this restaurant needs to be inspected by health officials or someone! read more

For lunch on Saturday I arrived at Maria Bonita for a nice, quick lunch. Since I arrived at noon, the establishment had its seating fully occupied, but I received a seat within 5 minutes. Shortly after taking a seat and ordering, I received complimentary chips and salsa. My order, the Mojarra Frita Al Mojo de Ajo ($15.99), consisted of fried whole tilapia with rice, beans, side salad, and tortillas. The whole tilapia was fried to a light crisp outside, while the meat remained flaky. The rice, beans, and side salad seemed acceptable, with the lettuce not being super fresh but good enough for a basic salad (like the sort I would make at home). The main selling point was the portion size. Having not had breakfast, I could barely finish the plate. I ended up leaving the tortillas. Someone told us this place was good, and we LOVE good Mexican food so we headed over. We got there at 8:30 on a Thursday night and the place was PACKED so we made the bold assumption that it was a hit. Good assumption! If you end up having to wait, use the time to look over the extensive menu. Tough to decide which plate of deliciousness is calling your name loudest. The portion sizes are huge, so consider sharing a plate unless you just want to call It tomorrow night's dinner too! Same goes for the fresh frozen drinks- plan to share! I was extremely disappointed the food here has been superior. It has been about three years since I've been there our waitress was uninterested in serving our meal. We waited quite a while for our drink and chips and salsa. We actually had to ask the table preparer or the hostess for our drinks and chips which she brought promptly. My taquitos were cold in the center. I can't say for sure that I got food poisoning from Maria Bonita, but I threw up all the rest of the day and part of the following day. The food here is so so good and they offer many different menu options. As soon as you are seated you are immediately served a pretty large portion of chips and salsa. The salsa tasted very fresh and had a nice kick to it. I got the shredded beef chimichanga and was presented with a massive plate of food. The meat was very soft and flavorful and the refried beans were not a goopy mess like some other places. We also ordered the enchiladas de mole. Both were fantastic but we personally enjoyed the chimichanga more because it had a much deeper flavor. I hate to remove a star but I was honestly disappointed in the way they handled the current covid situation. We were seated an arms length apart from another table and it seemed that the entire restaurant was very close to each other. On top of that as I was concluding my meal, the owner came out to check on us but wasn't wearing a mask or gloves! The food was terrible. We used to go all the time and will no longer go. We ordered 2 dishes and the refried beans were cold and like water. You couldn't eat them with a fork. The beef had no flavor and was cold as well. We told our waiter and he went to the back. We got no compensation and we didn't eat it. Sad. read more

I'm not sure why or how this place has four stars, but for some reason you guys like this place (better you than me) I'm personally still grossed out by the sticky wood tables and dirty chairs and menu covers. I wonder if the board of health just overlooks this when they visit. The portions are still huge and now overpriced. The service is still average (at best), and the food is so Americanized it made me a little sad that they can call this Mexican food. Salsa 1 star, tacos 1 Star. My main reason for coming was to get their cool, huge drinks! I got their Strawberry Colada and it was delicious! My hubby got the Pina Colada and that was really good too! Just be aware, they are $8.99 or more, I knew the cost, but my hubby didn't so he was surprised when he saw the bill. I got 2 Shredded Beef Enchiladas and it was really tasty, I was just disappointed in the fact that they were corn tortillas instead of flour. It didn't state that it would be corn tortillas, otherwise I would have asked for flour. My husband got Enchiladas de Mole and they were flour tortillas, so I guess I'm just curious on how they decide which gets which tortilla without it stating it. Their rice was a bit hard and undercooked and their received beans were ok. The portions are huge! Overall, it was good. If you want to go for a fun drink treat, totally go here! Yikes - I was super disappointed with my meal here! The chips and salsa were okay, but there is more flavor in a jar of Pace, than in that salsa. I got their carnitas tacos, and they were the blandest things. I LOVE carnitas, and their crispy, salty, juicy bits! But man, these were not it. They were huge chunks of flavorless meat, with some unseasoned guac and more onions and cilantro than I've ever seen. Rice was meh, and beans were thin and...you guessed it, bland. Overall, super disappointed. I spent $19 to be disappointed. And I even chose to fore-go the $4.90 Diet Coke. (You read that right, $4.90 for a glass of Diet Coke...a crime, if you ask me.) I Came here for a special occasion and left very disappointed. Our waitress was an angel, where I found the restaurant was lacking is their menu and overall customer satisfaction. I ordered "flautas" at what I believed was a Mexican restaurant. Under the flauta choice there was nothing but the meat choices you could get and the option of an up charge if you wanted 3 different meats and so I assumed it would be the regular Mexican dish (fried corn tortillas with meat inside). When my dish came I as met with 3 giant fried flour tortillas with a chicken mixture of some kind in the inside. This was far from what I thought I would receive and as you can see it's far from the actual dish. After expressing my dissatisfaction with the lack of description for the meal the person in charge let me know that "there is a description!" When she pulled out the menu herself she found the lack of description and pointed me to another food item that I guess I should've known about my first time here. Afterwards I was told that there was nothing they could do for me and that "no one else seemed to ever have a problem". In my time at the restaurant it didn't seem like the regular clientele would know the difference and would probably greet the extra food portion with joy. I however left $22 poorer and hungry. If Authentic Mexican food isn't going to be provided maybe consider a Tex-mex title. read more

This is an update review. Maria Bonita is our favorite Mexican sit-down place. They have really upped their game in regards to menu, service, and variety. If you like Mexican sea-food- go nowhere else! They have a wonderful variety. They have even started doing little things like making a simple Diet Coke look like a specialty drink with a little toothpick of fresh fruit. We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night and was told it would be a 1 hour wait with a virtual waitlist to track our position. It ended up being 1 hr 45 min until we were seated! Was very happy with the complementary chips and salsa - the salsa tasted sooo fresh and the chips were delicious too. Probably some if the best salsa I've had in awhile and a huge portion. I ordered the flautas - one beef, pork, and chicken. I had to pay an extra $3 to have one of each type of meat. I didn't expect it to be so deep fried, but it was very tasty! The filling was delicious with meat, cheese, peppers, and onions with beans and rice on the side. It was so yummy but SO BIG. I ate less than half and felt so full. I eat out by myself quite often, for as much as I like the food here, I have not eaten here for the past couple of years because of the poor service, especially when you only have a table of one. I have to say, by far, Maria Bonita has the best seafood cocktail within the area, and that's what I've been craving for, but I was completely forgotten as soon as I was set down in a corner table. I waited for almost ten minutes with no one taking my oreder and had to wave down a server that's taking an order from a lady that came in after me because she was sitting at a more exposed area, and I had to wave her down again for the silverware. After my food arrived, I never saw her again. I ended up having to wave down a buser for hot sauce and more water, after waited for about five minutes after my meal, I just went straight to the cashier and paid without ever gotten my bill. This was the first time I actually told the cashier I never had any service when I was asked if I was going to leave a tip and leaving without giving any. The food here is good, but you will have much better luck getting noticed and with some if you go with a party of two or more. read more

This place ALWAYS has a line out the door - and for good reason. The plates are HUGE and their portions fit the plates. You might get lost in their enormous chairs too - it's fine. You'll be full and lost and fine. I'd 12/10 recommend the flautas!! It's what I always get. I kid you not when I say they are the size of your arm and you SHOULD split this dish or plan on an insane amount of leftovers. As soon as the plate comes out people literally turn their heads with mouths open. They are THAT BIG. The flautas come with THREE and you can get a different meat in each. Try them all see which meat you like meat! OK - so that's what I normally get. But this one time I branched out and got a lobster quesadilla. Yeah. Let that sink in. WHOA YUM. The husband (when he's not spitting the flautas with me) loves the shrimp fajitas. The shrimp is huge and perfectly seasoned. I haven't ever ordered a drink, but I've watched them come out and they are HUGE. Like a full pineapple with a drink inside. I also fail because I haven't gotten dessert here - I'm always SO FULL that dessert isn't even a possibility. Moral of the story: eat here. Be converted to the best Mexican food in Utah. Loved this place! I went with a large group and they were so great to accommodate us, especially when splitting the check. The food was absolutely delicious!!! It all came in huge portions and could easily be shared between two people. The mango colada was seriously amazing. It was super creamy and full of flavor. The steak nachos were so good! A Disastrous Dining Experience - If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. My experience here was hands down one of the worst I've ever had at a sit-down restaurant. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that customer service was not a priority--unless you count being rushed out the door as quickly as possible. Despite making a reservation two weeks in advance for seven people, we were crammed at a table meant for four, shoved near the kitchen like an afterthought. The staff was rude, unapproachable, and made no effort to accommodate us comfortably. The service was beyond abysmal. Drinks were forgotten, refills were non-existent, and our waitress barely checked on us--except to aggressively push To-Go boxes on us multiple times, despite us clearly not being done with our meal. Even basic courtesies, like offering dessert, or offering straws were completely overlooked. To make matters worse, we were never informed of an hour time limit, yet we had multiple servers hovering around our table, making us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. They repeatedly tried to take drinks and plates we weren't finished with, making it blatantly obvious that they wanted us gone--even though we had only been there an hour. When we questioned this, the manager, who was outright hostile, told us we needed to leave to make space for other guests. She only addressed the Spanish-speaking member of our group, completely ignoring the rest of us, and threatened to charge a fee if we stayed longer. Had this policy been communicated when we made the reservation, I would have never wasted my time bringing my out-of-town guests here or even communicated as we sat down to set the expectation as my guests and I had professional matters to discuss and it was a complete embarrassment for me at how uncomfortable they were made to feel. Adding insult to injury, the food was lukewarm and unimpressive--certainly not worth tolerating the horrendous service. This restaurant is a prime example of how being busy is no excuse for treating guests like an inconvenience. My experience was completely ruined by the lack of professionalism, poor service, and outright hostility of the staff. I will never return, and I strongly advise others to take their business elsewhere. read more

This was our third time in. Previous two were at dinner, both times crazy busy. Today was for lunch which was a better experience. Not nearly so many people, no wait to get a table. The first time I was there I thought the server was rude. She was fine during the meal until towards the end she told us we needed to leave because other people were waiting for tables. First of all, I get moving people through the restaurant so more people can come in and eat their food. However, it's not like we were a huge party and we're there for 2 hours or something ridiculous. I'm also a paying customer, I don't want to be rushed, especially when we weren't taking excessive time. And we were still eating! We weren't just sitting around talking, we were enjoying our pina coladas in pineapples! I docked my review 1 star because of this, perhaps it was an isolated incident but it also could be standard practice ‍. Ok moving on from that. The other two times we have been in it has been a pleasant experience. Our servers have been fairly attentive and accommodating. The portions are HUGE. I don't think I've ever finished a meal. Today I got the Chile verde smother burrito. It's was pretty yummy, I've had better chili covered and I've had worse. I was only able to eat about 1/2 of it. There was an option for 2 smothered burritos. I'm not sure who that's for, I'm not a little guy and I seriously couldn't finish 1 burrito, I'd love to see someone put down 2 of those. The chips and salsa are huge which I like, my family always burns through salsa, this is the first place that they bring you enough that we didn't have to ask for more. All in all it's a decent spot. Maria Bonita was incredibly patient with our huge party reservation, and the handful of people who came much later than our seating time was set for. They sat us, took all of our orders, and split up the bills without a fuss. They kept the chips and salsa coming. The food was super good; I had chile relleno and a chicken enchilada. I thought the inside was lovely. I loved the art and decorations. I don't live in Utah county anymore, but I'm sad I didn't know about this place when I did live there. let's start out here, the food is great. the parking is horrible and extremely limited especially since there is no street parking. However we went again the other night and ordered food for 3 people, drinks, meals, appetizer and dessert. they didnt like us staying more than an hour and ASKED us to leave so they could use the table. They lied and said it had a reservation but they don't take reservations- we asked. They cleared our table without asking us- they reached over us to try and get us to leave. We were still eating as they tried to get us to box up the food. when I ordered dessert they wanted me to take it to go. who does that? we spent over $150 and they were rude as ever. we will not go back as Mexican food is a dime a dozen here and I'm sure there are places with just as good of food without the rudeness. in case you wondering, we weren't loud, we were polite, and talking business so our conduct was professional. Decided to give this place a try. Smell walking in was giving good vibes. Nice little place, was wanting to try something that I normally don't get so I went with the carne con Chile rojo. It was pretty good. Rice, beans tortillas all together was good. Needed salt but I'm pretty salty. Wife ordered the pork.chimi, it was good. Pork was moist and had a lime flavor. She said it was good. The coke was ginormous. We didn't order but other did a gigantic strawberry drink. Looked really good. Based on the reviews and how busy this places is, I was really excited to finally eat at THE Maria Bonita's. I had been here a dozen years before as a college kid and remember liking it then. It's quite a popular place so if you're going during main dining hours, expect a wait. Overall, I'd say this place is good and in line with the many other Mexican food restaurants in Utah. The complimentary salsa is large in quantity but the flavor of the salsa is just ok. I had the beef chimichanga and it was good. They give you large portions since this place has a fairly high price tag for the food. $16 for your platter of food. I didn't like their rice and would rate it below average compared to other places. They can push tables together to accommodate large parties but generally you're better off if your party size is 4 or smaller.
