The space is so cute. Clean, simple, pretty, and there is an upstairs private area that is such a vibe. Now the food. Wow. Queso fundido was insane. The jalapeños had the perfect kick and the homemade tortillas are hands down the best tortillas. I would go back just for those. Empanadas and tinga tostados were packed with flavor but listen to me... GET THE LAMB. It was unreal. And then dessert. The hibiscus poached pear with whipped cream. The service was really good. In comparison the food was bland and greasy. Our eating buddies were so excited to try here and were equally disappointed in their meal. This is not an inexpensive restaurant. My favourite go to meal is anything Mexican. The chicken taco had no flavour at all. No spices nothing. One taco was dripping grease the other had no grease. The pork taco had a flavor. Good combination of ingredients that made it interesting The beef taco was gamey and tough. We kept chewing the beef, but the toughness won and we gave up. Made reservations over three weeks ago for a surprise birthday party for 17 and 4 high chairs. Requested the upper floor. Made reservations in person. They took the reservation. Checked the day of the reservation (in person) just to make sure everything would be ready for the reservation. All was set. Upon arrival, they had set up seating for only 10 on the lower level, not the upper level. Couldn't even seat the party anywhere in the restaurant. Obviously, the surprise was lost. The first Saturday of every month they do a brunch. We did not know what was on the menu, but we were pleasantly surprised. The chef is unbelievable, it's five stars every time we come. First time trying Oteo and it did not disappoint! The parking lot is very small and we actually had to park across the street and walk over. The restaurant itself is small, quiet, and minimal. However, it's creates a nice intimate environment which I enjoyed. We started with the queso and it was absolutely delicious. It was so creamy and the jalapeños were a great addition to have some spice. The corn tortillas tasted homemade and I loved how you spin the cheese and put it into your tortilla. Would definitely get that every single time. I ordered the tacos. I got one salmon and one beef. The beef is advertised on the menu as a hangar steak and cooked medium rare. I will say, although the tortilla and the jalapeños were good for the taco, the beef itself was disappointing. It was chewy and cooked more like medium well. Didn't seem like the best quality either. There wasn't much pink at all in the meat. Some bites were flavorful and seasoned well and other bites had no flavor. I have to say, I was expecting a lot better - especially because our waitress said that was the best one. In my opinion, there also needed to be some type of sauce. The taco, likely due to the meat, was dry. The tortilla was delicious though. The salmon taco was the saving grace for the steak taco. It was a big piece of salmon and had amazing flavor. It was cooked perfectly. The sauces were creamy and delicious and all of the flavors complimented the fish very well. I would definitely order this again. I was very impressed. The service was really good too and they made sure to refill our drinks throughout our meal. I will definitely be back here for the queso and the salmon taco. I have been here three times and have tried three different entrees. They have all been delicious and perfectly cooked. They also have wonderful service. I loved that they brought my toddler a quesadilla right away to help her stay occupied and happy. This is a small restaurant with a small parking lot, but they make up for it with big flavor and great customer service. It is very clean and well decorated. Very cozy and intimate. Different and delicious! The food is simply amazing. Much higher quality than most Mexican restaurants. The building and prices don't indicate it, but this is gourmet-quality food. Hand-prepared and fried corn tortillas, freshly made salsa with creme sauce, they serve churros like you've never had- cooked tender, not tough, and served with crème anglaise. The service is very good, and the menu changes fairly often. There are few seats in the restaurant venue, so if you don't get there when they open, you may be waiting a while! My favorite restaurant in all of Utah valley by far. If I had to eat here or some expensive famous steakhouse for the rest of my life I would choose Oteo for sure. This place keeps my marriage alive. Just knowing it is waiting for me on date night gets me through even the hardest work weeks. I almost always get the pork Molote but they had a steak torta special today that blew my mind. But I've never had a bad experience with staff. They don't offer fountain sodas, which is bothersome. And that's saying a lot coming from a meat-eater such as myself! Let's talk about that apple salad for a minute. Wow! I've never had anything like that. It's a granny smith apple that is shredded/sliced into small thin strips. It's got a really yummy cheese and some seasoning. It's fantastic. My elderly mother and I decided to try Oteo for lunch after reading so many incredibly positive reviews on Yelp. The food look fresh and creative in the photos and the prices seemed reasonable. It looked like a hidden gem just waiting to be experienced.... The atmosphere: I was surprised to step into Oteo at 12:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon only to find a completely empty restaurant. The only other people in the building at the time were the cashier and cook. I thought this was strange given all the high ratings and positive reviews it has on Yelp. Even the worst fast-food restaurant on the planet (I gotta give that award to Arby's) gets a decent amount of customers during a mid-week lunch rush. And yet, here we are the ONLY customers in the building. It wasn't until after we got our food that reason for the empty building became clear. Like a lion stalking his prey from behind the bush, the solo line cook stared at us intensely while we ate. From the moment we received our food until the moment we walked out of the building, his eyes were fixed on us. I don't know if his intention was to intimidate us into loving his food or if he was just hoping to witness an orgasmic culinary explosion on our faces after the first bite... Whatever the reasons, we were not comfortable with being glared at for the entirety of our meal. The food: We ordered an appetizer (Queso Fundito), which was.... meh. Other than it being a bit on the salty side, it was flavorless and bland. We had no idea the sodium chloride overdose that was yet to come. My mom ordered the chicken sopes and I ordered chicken tacos. Everything looked nice and appeared to be edible, maybe even slightly appetizing. The cook had definitely put some effort into the appearance of his food. For those of you who have a normal - large sized appetite, be ready to double the amount of food you order at Oteo as the portion sizes are small. Lucky for us, our appetites vanished shortly the first few bites, so the small portions became a non-issue. My immediate thought when I first bit into the taco was, "HOLY SALT". The only way I can describe what had entered my mouth would be... overly salted chicken, salted cabbage, and a flour tortilla deep-fried in salt then topped with more SALT. When I asked my mom how her meal was, she (trying to be her usual kind-hearted self) said, "Oh, it's fine, honey...", then whispered, "...... maybe just a little on the salty side". We had to be discreet when talking about our first impressions since the cook had EYES ON US. We didn't want to personally offend the guy, but we found it difficult to fake any level of satisfaction. If a chef (and I use that term very loosely here) has to use extreme amounts of salt in his food to give it flavor, then he might want to rethink his career choices. Over salting a food is not only bad for your long-term health, it also overpowers the natural flavors in the food. Those natural flavors are what we, as your customers, WANT to experience! It was at this point that I became very thankful that the portions were small. Overall - If you are a lover of sodium (and I know there are a few of you out there) and you don't care about small portions or awkward social interactions, then Oteo might just be the hidden gem you've been waiting for. This is a love or hate type restaurant. Food presentation is their focal point. If you're a foodie, you'll probably like this place. The location is small and customers don't cycle through quickly (the service was a bit slow) so if you have a group larger than four, then you better plan ahead or go during off hours for eating. The food is well prepared and presentation is their focus. Not the best value given portions are on the smaller side. I had the queso fundido and chicken empanadas. They were both decent but I wouldn't go back for them. They only offer canned or bottled beverages. They didn't have ice when asked for a glass.
