We're back in Providence to celebrate my wife's birthday and decided to start the weekend fun with a dinner at Mare Rooftop. Mare is described as a Mediterranean-inspired seafood restaurant. It's about a 7 minute drive from downtown Providence with upscale vibes. After riding the elevator up to the restaurant, we checked in with the hostess and were escorted to our table. There, our server Teresa greeted us and told us about the specials and some items she recommended. My wife ordered the Tequila Doli cocktail and Amaretto Apple Cider. I kept it basic with a draft beer. We also ordered deviled eggs because why not? Our drinks and deviled eggs were served promptly, and after a few pics, we dove right in. The deviled eggs tasted great and I ended up ordering another round of them. The cocktails did not disappoint. According to the menu, the Tequila Doli contains Lunazul Blanco Tequila, & Pineapple fermented topped with a Pineapple Slice. The ingredients paired well and the drink left my wife wide-eyed with amazement after the first sip. I also had a sip and thought it tasted great. I also loved it's simple but beautiful presentation with the sliced pineapple sitting atop of the foam. The Apple Cider Amaretto was dangerously delicious due to how sweet and smooth it was. I see myself ordering a few when we return. For the entrees, we went with Teresa's recommendations on the scallops and short ribs. The scallops were served on pumpkin risotto, butternut squash, and topped with stracciatella cheese and pesto. They were seared to perfection and had a soft, buttery texture inside. The pumpkin risotto and butternut squash all worked well and we found the food delightful. The short ribs were the item that stole my heart. They were presented with a nice bark and served over delicious mashed potatoes with a side of fresh green beans. The ribs were cooked perfectly as they were fork-tender, and savory. The green beans were fresh and had a nice "snap" to them. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Mare Rooftop. Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperative or ideal for outdoor dining and drinks. But as discussed with our server, we're already planning our return in August! read more

Sea scallops over risotto, Shrimp & Cod Mozambique The scallops and risotto were warm, but not hot the shrimp and cod Mozambique was outstanding! Our server was Jack super nice guy attentive, I've read in other reviews about the service being a little slow. It was very busy and so I understand. Located in a beautifully appointed building just an elevator ride to the rooftop restaurant. The entrance is elegant and the dining room is exquisite flanked on both sides by wonderful rooftop dining including fire pit seating. The bar wraps around to the outdoor seating, perfect spot for a cocktail and pizza. The service and staff is beyond friendly and professional, everyone made our dinner extra special. Everyone was very attentive. The food was served timely and elegantly. Service was terrific and the food was good. Drinks were pricey... $370 for four of us. Calamari was good and plentiful. My friend and I did a walk-in for restaurant week and decided to sit on the patio to enjoy the scenic view and the beautiful weather. It took a while before anyone came over, but we did get some bread and dipping oil while we waited. To be fair, it looked like we came during the dinner rush. We asked for the restaurant week menu and waited a little longer before finally putting in our drink and food orders. I ordered the Tequila Blossom, which honestly just tasted like orange juice... nothing special. It also got warm over the course of the meal, so I asked for a cup of ice. The Summer Beet Salad was a solid starter and a generous portion. The flavors were a good balance of acidic and bitter, but after a few bites it started to feel repetitive. The Steak Frites were pretty straightforward. The green beans were slightly overcooked, the fries were crisp, and the steak was cooked how I asked. It didn't really stand out, but it got the job done . The velvety chocolate cake was the highlight. I almost wish there were more than just one blackberry on the plate, but it did help me finish off that orange juice cocktail. The dinner felt a bit long overall, but I was in great company and the evening was beautiful--so I can't complain too much For the restaurant week price, it was a great dinner and a fantastic way to enjoy the sunset . read more

Mare is a class act. Seven of us went on Mother's Day - a day that has historically been filled with disappointing food and service. This year changed my opinion of what I could expect when you take the time to pick the right establishment. From the moment we arrived, the Team was pleasant, inviting, and made for an incredibly easy going experience that every good mother deserves. Being inside a glass rooftop, I'd imagine that it isn't the easiest place to manage temperature-wise, but it was very comfortable and I noticed Team members opening or closing the large folding glass panels to allow for more or less airflow as was appropriate based on the weather - just a small thing I noticed that could make a big difference if managed improperly. The Manager, Katherine, was excellent, and checked on us throughout our experience to make sure everything was going smoothly. Jack, our waiter, was on top of things the whole time, punctual with drinks and food, courteous, and very amicable. We were never rushed, our whole visit had a very natural flow, and the food was second to none. Appetizers were excellent - Margherita Pizza, Charcuterie Board, and the Meatball Arancini. For lunch, a few of us got the Seafood Mozambique, one the Blackened Salmon, another the Frutti di Mare, and I got the Steak Frites. Although the steak was excellent, I won't lie - the Mozambique looked outstanding and I wish I would have tried it. That means I'll just have to go back soon haha. There were rave reviews and not a single complaint about the food or anything else, for that matter; being Mother's Day especially, that is a badge to wear proudly, as it isn't easy to accomplish. We look forward to returning together as a family, and I look forward to many more experiences here myself. The drinks are also great, delicious and well-balanced with a good amount of alcohol. Location: This is definitely a go-to for a special night out. We had a nice dinner. Our server-in-training took excellent care of us and did a fantastic job, with Aaron guiding her along the way. The roasted chicken and gluten-free Bolognese were both average and my bourbon smash was outstanding. The atmosphere was very nice, still early, before sunset, but you can tell it would have a whole different energy at night. What a fantastic venue. We booked the Mare Rooftop for a 50th birthday celebration. Not only was the semi- private space the perfect way to surprise our guest of honor, but it comfortably accommodated a party of 25. Simplistic but elegantly decorated. And the food was incredible - everyone complimented their dishes - sirloin cooked to perfection, pan seared chicken, and a salmon to die for. A delectable selection of desserts, too! But what made the night was the staff. Catherine and her team were attentive, kind, and friendly. It was exactly why we chose to host our event here. Three of us (two mothers) went for a Mother's Day early dinner. I have always liked the design and ambiance of this place. The current chef does a good job. I was glad to see the restaurant full of a variety of people. We ordered three different drinks - a mimosa, Bombay Sapphire and a Chianti. To eat we shared shishito peppers - quite good. Other dishes were a lobster bisque, a Caesar salad, pasta puttanesca (tasty but a little too salty), a herb encrusted cod and the special the halibut (somewhat a surprise at an expensive $60). None of us had any room left for dessert but I did end with an espresso. The check came to over $205 for the three of us without a tip.our server, Jadyn, was pleasant and attentive in spite of the busy situation. Almost worth it for a special occasion! This restaurant has a great space and both a menu and service to match! What a great place for all different occasions. I was brought here on a date and was more than impressed with the restaurant. Once sat, we ordered wine. Service was definitely a bit slower, but I chalk it up to a busy dinnertime on the weekend. The wine list is extensive and satisfactory. I do wish there were more variety in the options for wines by the glass. For appetizers, my date had the brussels sprouts and I had the tuna tartare. I do not eat sprouts, but I understand that they were very good. I really enjoyed the tartare. Unfortunately, my date was not used to that sort of dining (or moderation, or etiquette, etc). He ate all of his appetizer, and ruined his appetite for entrees. I was gobsmacked. We promptly left after. I would be remiss if I did not recognize and apologize to our server. She was a french woman, and was absolutely delightful. The service she provided was beyond exceptional. I am sorry that our dinner ended early. I was just as surprised as you. I ordered the grilled chicken, pizza and mashed potatoes .It seemed like it was cooked from being frozen and the mashed potato was very creamy and grainy like the box mashed potatoes and the pizza I had asked for the chicken to be on top, which is very simple right before it comes out to put the shredded chicken on top of my meal not only was that refused. Horrible Experience - Food Safety Issue We visited this restaurant with a group of friends and unfortunately had a terrible experience. Several of us ordered salads and Sandwiches with rugula and spinach, and within 24 hours, many in our group became seriously ill with food poisoning symptoms. It was the only common food we all shared, and the timing strongly points to the salads being the cause. The restaurant atmosphere seemed fine at first, but clearly something is wrong in the kitchen--whether it's improper food handling or unwashed produce, this is a serious health concern. We strongly urge others to be cautious. We won't be returning. But the place and prices are OK! read more

Although a rooftop, Mare is easy to find with a well-marked door and a welcoming lobby (this time decorated festively for pumpkin season!) and it's an easy lift up to the "R" floor. The vibe is elegant but not overly fancy, although I think you could go fancier and not feel out of place. We had the octopus appetizer to start. It had a great, charred flavored and was a generous portion, although I would have liked to see a little more crisp texture-wise (full-disclosure though: I'm an octopus snob). Derrick was super attentive and helpful, giving us all the helpful tips. Particularly, he had a great tip to switch out the sauce in the frutti di mare sauce with a white sauce vs the marinara it came with - so good! We also had the sirloin and it was good perfectly (got it medium rare) with tons of flavor, no salt needed. The tiramisu for dessert was fantastic (and Derrick gave us a "fun fact" about the origin of the name - check it out) and the pumpkin martini was delicious. Derrick helpfully told us when we asked about the martini in the beginning that it was best for dessert and he was spot on about that. We returned to enjoy their selections per the Providence Restaurant Weeks menu only to find that the ONE day they did not offer those specials, was Saturday. Nevertheless, we were there so we had regular menu choices. I had the Lobster Bisque along with their special Meatball pizza. My husband had the Spinach Salad along with the Rigatoni Bolognese. We were looking for an outside dining venue close to our hiking destination, and Mare had come highly recommended. Mare occupies the rooftop of a modern apartment building, near Wayland Square in the historic area on the East Side of Providence. There are some great places to hike and walk in the area, including Blackstone Boulevard. We didn't have reservations, but it was early for dinner (or perhaps it was a really late lunch) and we were promptly seated. I noticed a sign at the front desk stating that no baseball caps were allowed. I thought this was a joke, as there was no mention about any other aspect of attire, meaning I could wear slippers and pajamas as long as I wasn't donning a baseball cap? Once seated we decided to order: Scallops & Polenta $36 Lobster Panzanella Salad $24 The scallops were fresh and tender, seared and tasty, though I thought a couple were too seared for my liking. The polenta was delicious, creamy and rich without being too heavy. Overall I'd be happy to order this dish again. The lobster salad was also good, though a little heavy handed on the dressing, resulting in soggy croutons. It was a light and refreshing dish, appropriate for dining outside on this hot summer day. We had hoped to dine outside, but all the shaded tables were taken and they don't use umbrellas here, so we opted to eat inside. It was very quiet, so few tables were taken inside, and the glass ceiling was high providing an open and breezy atmosphere. Service was prompt, and our waitress checked on our table several times. We really liked the upscale vibe here. While the Prosciutto de Parma Pizza was a highlight of the night food-wise, I cannot speak enough on the excellent service and welcoming we received from the hostess Kristen. Walking in, I immediately fell in love with the ambiance, which featured gentle contours, playful accent colors, and a balance of engineered and organic materials. Short rib was OK but mashed were salty & certainly not worth the price. Got the check & saw we were charged for salad with lobster (instead of shrimp). Server brought a corrected check & charged for 3 shrimp. Asked to see the manager who never came to the table. Instead, she just took the price of the salad off the bill. While we appreciated the gesture, when you want to see a manager, you expect the manager to come to the table. The only nice thing about this place is the view. Our server Pahanary sold the specials so elegantly. (I got the raspberry margarita) the cocktail shrimp and the Board was top notch. She ordered the sangria. At dinner she got salmon and I ordered the mare loin. Absolutely cooked perfectly. Great seasoning and flavoring. We finished the night with a tiramisu, vanilla ice cream and espresso martini. My boyfriend and I went to Mare on Saturday night and had a FABULOUS dining experience. We were early for our reservation so we started with martinis at the bar. So wonderful to have a cocktail before dinner as things return to normal in early March 2022! We were informed our table was ready yet never felt rushed to finish our cocktails. Once seated we ordered more drinks, shrimp cocktail and the short rib. (Worth noting we didn't want carbs so requested double the veggie serving instead of mashed potatoes).
